PPPoE on BM 3.8/Netware 6.5 server I'm lost!!!
We just picked a new ISP that offers fiber but uses PPPoE. I am using a
router that supports PPPoE, mtu modifications, etc. Have a static IP.
My server (thank goodness it is a new 'test server' I have set up with all
of the up to date patches, etc,) is running Netware 6.5 and BM 3.8. I
configured it has private 192.168.1.100 private board and a 64.x.x.x
public board, set up just like the existing server on TCP/IP broadband
connection but need to connect to the internet using PPPoE.
How do I modify the server/router settings for the server to use PPPoE.
I have NAT capabilities in the router as well as the server.
Floundering in the PPPoE/BM 3.8 fog
JohnB
Thanks!!! Getting clearer (I hope) but I still must be a potato head
I have the private and public cards on th BM server set up on 2 different
networks as you suggested and the router is accepting a PPPoE assigned
public IP address. ( I can tell this from connecting the router to
another non-server/non-lan connected computer I can hook up directly to
the router.
However, when I run the server through the router, in the NAT translation
table for the public card in the BM server, what is the IP for that public
card under the translation table. The NAT table asks for the 'private
address' and the 'public address. For the 'private address, do I just use
the IP address I assigned it on the 192.168.10.0 IP segment? And then,
what do I put for the 'public Address'. The help screen says usually the
static IP from the ISP, but that doesn't work and it seems like I should
be pointing it to the router. Also, do I need to change the 'next hop'
setting in the LAN Static Routing Table?
Thanks always.

Lexmark Marknet unable to connect to Netware 5.1 server with IPX
Hi,
Im having some problems with Lexmark Marknet print servers. We are using
Netware 5.1 servers with ipx print queues. The print servers are MarkNet
X2000 series and MarkNet Pro3 Series from Lexmark. The print servers are
being serviced by a Netware 5.1 server. (server a) I use the MarkVision
Printer Utility to setup the printer server.
We are having a migration project from Windows NT workstations to Windows
XP workstations. We have made new print queues for the XP environment. We
also want to use an other server (server b) for servicing the print
servers. I have made al the new queues on the volume on the new server
(server b). When I use the markvision to add the new server (server b) to
the existing print server it doesnt connect. Could there be a problem in
de IPX environment ?Any reason why you dont want to use NDPS with IP? Most print servers like
lexmark will work with IP/LPR printing all you need to do is find out
what the name is for the port. Some use raw others use printer etc..
The print queues can easily be attached to the ndps printers within the
NWADMIN (workstation client MUST have ndps installed prior to assigning
queue).

NetWare 6.5 Server Consolidation
Good morning,
My customer is attempting to perform a NetWare 6.5 server consolidation, in the end they are wanting to move data from the NetWare server and then decommission that server. They are trying to move the DATA volume to a Cluster Resource
The Source server itself had a number of issues, especially relating to certificates, and also some DNS records were not completed for the Target Resource. One set of errors came to light

Thank you,
Just providing an update to this issue. It was reported to me this morning that a restart was performed on both the Source NetWare server and the Target Location. Since that restart took place the MIGGUI process was started again, and this time it would appear that the first pass is progressing through. Will monitor the situation and report further status messages. -

Replace Downed Netware 6.5 Server
I have a Netware 6.5 server that has seen it's last day. I have a full backup copy of 2 volumes DATA and HOME. I have a brand new server I want to insert into it's place as Netware 6.5 SP8, same name, and IP address. I have not installed Netware on the new server as of yet.
What is the proper procedure for doing this?
I would appreciate assistance.
ThanksHi,
The problem is that there are a LOT of proceedures, repending on your setup.... There is a lot we need to know. Is this server hosting the master replicas of any of the eDir partitions in yout tree? Or acting as a time server for your eDirectory tree? If so, special measure must be taken to make eDirectory happy prior to doing anyting.
Is the server dead and completely non-revivable? Its a LOT easier to replace the server treating it as a migration, or using a hardware swap procedure in which place you can gracefully prepare for the hardware swap so that you don't disrupt the references to the server within your eDirectory tree.
If its the ONLY server in your eDirectiry tree, then you have lost eDirectory - and so may as well do a fresh install.
So before you attempt this, please share with us the details of your environment, how eDirectory is partitioned and replicated, etc... picking the wrong process can make a real mess.

Oracle 8.0.3 in a Netware 5.0 Server!
We have a netware 5.0 with 30 licenses.
We have Oracle 8.0.3 that it cames with novell server.
First of all where can i see information about oracle to netware servers?
We are trying to develop a program in VB 6 (is ready) that it comunicates with oracle server trought odbc connection.
We have the next problems:
- The oracle database have 5 user licenses, with 3 users working, there are no problems, but when the 4º user login into the oracle database (load the program in vb6 and begin work on it), all the users begin to receive the ask to login into database oracle (user/password/feiras.world). If in this situation 1 of 4 user goes out of the aplicattion all is fine!
- If we have a 5 user prodution oracle database, why can we only work with 3 licenses?
- The second problem is the program doing some search in database takes netware server almost to 100% of Utilization, and we wait a lot by the information, is this normal?
- The third situation, is that, the program works very slowly at getting data from da oracle database. Is this because we use VB6 and ODBC? Are some away of we improve performance?

bad news ...
oracle 8.0.3 went out of support in march , 1999.
so no patches or downloads will normally be available after this
occurs.
On Windows NT platforms, you will need to upgrade to :

8.0.5, or
8.1.5

wait for oracle 8i release 2 just announced at open world.

Can a Windows 2003 server see a Netware 6.5 server w/ CIFS loaded?
Apparently the answer, at least w/ the W2k3 server as configured out of the
box, is no. What, if anything, must I do in order for the Windows server to
see the Netware servers? I would like to avoid installing a Novell client
on the Windows server just because it will add a layer of complexity I'd
like to avoid, but if that's the only way, please let me know.
TIA.

That TID seems to address login failures, but I don't even see the
Netware boxes at all. A good starting point would be having them show
up in Explorer.

ZCM Inventory Scan of a NetWare 6.5 Server
I was able to install the ZCM Adaptive Agent for NetWare servers on all of my NetWare servers, and I can see these servers in Devices/Servers after performing a discovery.
How can I run an inventory scan for these NetWare servers so I can get more detailed information about these servers?
Thank You,

probably better posted in the ZCM inventory forum...
but.. if you go to configuration of your zone and than device management (I
think) you will find inventory only schedules

Migrate Physical NetWare 6.5 server to ESX server
I want to migrate a NetWare 6.5 sp7 server to a new ESX server we just built. Does anyone know the steps to perform this operation?
I would definitively do what Anders has suggested. Build a new server and then migrate. You could do a P2V...but this does not give you the cleanest install, nor the best VM. And while you are at it...move off of Netware and go to SLES/OES2. You're really hanging on to a dead horse there. :-)

OSX 10.6.2 and Novell Netware eDirectory 8.8 SP5
Ok, forgive the long winded post - but I thought some background would be in order. Briefly, the problem we have is:
We create a new user in eDirectory, extended them with apple-user,
add apple-user-homeDirectory of:
/Network/Servers/<ip of server>/SERVER.VOLUME/HomeDirectory
and an apple-user-homeurl of:
afp://<ip of server>/SERVER.VOLUME/HomeDirectory
AFP works fine, I can manually mount this volume with login / password in OSX with Command-K
LDAP authentication works great.
After login, no home directory is mounted or exists, so we get an error (login still occurs).
Now, if I change the apple-user-homeurl to:
<home_dir><url>afp://<ip of server>/SERVER.VOL</url><path>HomeDirectory</path></home_dir> (this is how an X Serve stores this value in Open Directory) and attempt to login, login fails "because an 'error' occurred"
If I check the console / system logs on the OSX client, I see:
authorizationhost[455]: afp home directory mount failed in theEnumerator->Count in AFP_OpenSession: status = Unknown error: -5023
Now, for the weird part, if I change apple-user-homeurl on the user back to:
afp://<ip of server>/SERVER.VOLUME/HomeDirectory - login then works fine and their home directory is created and they are able to use the Mac normally.
Any ideas? I will post this to Apple forums as well. If I get any answers I will cross-post them.
Thanks,
Joe Jenkins
ps: Novell, please please please, we really need a working OSX client for Netware / OES!!!
Background:
New Netware 6.5SP8 server / eDirectory 8.8 SP5 / latest NMAS
Latest Novell AFP FTF patch from mid Sept 2009
Edirectory schema extended and LDAP mappings made with documentation I pieced together on the web. If I browse via ldap, I am seeing proper returns for all the objects I need to login.
Mount object created in Edirectory for the AFP mount corresponding to users home directories.
OSX test client is Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (patched this morning, clean install)
Authentication works fine, client works fine once I do the switcheroo with the apple-user-homeurl as indicated above, AFP mounts work fine in OSX, no weird errors in NMAS/LDAP dstrace, AFPTCP.log etc
By the way, if anyone else is trying to figure this out, my LDIF and my LDAP template may be of use:
http://www.nerdnet.com/edirldifandplist.zip
The LDIF is the Apple schema you apply to your eDirectory to support OS X computers. The template is used by the Directory Utility on OSX for mapping eDirectory values to their OSX values. It's taken me about two weeks of work off and on to get a working set of these, hope they save someone else some time!
Thanks to whoever wrote the "Integrating Mac OS X and Novell eDirectory" document - it was a great help, as is Randy Saek's posts here and his written document "Mac OS X and Novell eDirectory integration" - with these documents and numerous posts on Novell's forums, I've almost got this working well (these documents are available all over the web, but if you can't find them, let me know and I'll put them on my webserver)
Cheers,
Joe JenkinsA long winded post deserves a long winded reply! Are you serving the home directories from Novell's AFP file server? If not -- if you're serving them from a Mac server -- then nevermind all this.
If so, you may need to create a generic mount object in your eDirectory tree (not an AppleShare object -- I've never been able to get that working)
Get Properties of the mount object and, under the "Other" tab (I'm assuming you're using ConslowOne) add the following attributes: values (or whatever variations of them are appropriate for you)
apple-mountDirectory: /Network/Servers
apple-mountOption: net
apple-mountOption: url==afp://;AUTH=NO%20USER%[email protected]/staff-network-drive
(yes, apple-mountOption gets two values! i just wrote the attribute twice for clarity)
apple-mountType: url
Once I had this in place I still had to do some fiddling with how to specify the home directory for each user. I settled on
OSX Home: /Network/Servers/10.9.7.11/student-network-drive/Users/stevejobs
(you would put this in apple-user-homeDirectory, not OSX Home. We just mapped things a little differently.)
apple-user-homeurl: <homedir><url>afp://10.9.7.11/student-network-drive</url><path>Users/stevejobs</path> </homedir>
Note how we have Users/stevejobs in the path section. This is different than how Workgroup Manager will save it, even though it will appear to be the same path if you look at it in WGM (thanks, apple.) Unfortunately the way WGM saves it doesn't work (at least, I couldn't get it to) so you can't use WGM to assign this attribute. I ended up writing a shell script to do it.
Hope that helps. If you want the shell script, I can probably dig it up but make sure you know what you're doing with it. It is tailored to our system and I didn't bother writing any exception handling, so it could very well nuke your system, call you names and eat your dog. -
Netware 6.0 SP5 Apache/Tomcat
I am setting up a New install Netware 6.0 server and have netware all patched up with sp5, & BM 3.7 patched up. This server will not be located in my office so I wanted to try to get the web app side up to date. I want to use Imanager to remotely check the health etc... I know this is an older version of Netware but this is a temporary replacement server and we should only be using this server for a year or 18 months max and we will no longer have a need for it. I say all that to ask how to upgrade Apache & Tomcat so I manager will work. I have EDIR 8.7.3 and the Novell JVM is at 1.4.2.04. The additional requirements for Imanager 2.01 are Tomcat 3.3, Tomcat 4 and Apache 1.3. Currently the server has Tomcat 3.3 installed and Apache 1.03. I can find a TID (10071533) on upgrading Tomcat 3.3 to Tomcat 4 on Netware 6.0 but cannot find the install file "Tomcat4.04b2", or any other variant. So do I need to get a newer version or what? I also need to update the Apache and cannot seem to find the correct files for that either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Certainly with Apache it's a case of extracting the NLMs from the
archive and then copying over the old ones.
Personally I
* download the update
* extract to a directory on my local machine
* rename the configuration files in the local copy to prevent actual
configuration files on server being overwritten
* make a copy of sys:\apache or sys:\apache2 (depending on which I'm
updating)
* copy the local copy over to the server, overwriting existing files
(remember we've just renamed the config files)
* restart Apache
Hope this helps.

Restoring eDirectory info from Netware 5.1 to 6.5.
What are the chances of restoring eDirectory info from a Netware 5.1 server to a NetWare6.5SP8 server?
My network is a mixture of NW6.5SP8 and OES 11SP2 servers, with a single exception.
Due to organizational politics, we have a department that has kept an old NetWare 5.1 server running.
That server crashed yesterday (finally!), and has been removed from eDirectory.
Amidst my joy, however, there is a problem:
My server backup software had never had any ACL-related problems when I've used it to restore data to my NW6.5 or OES11 servers.
That includes restoring data to a different server.
I had no problems restoring the data from this 5.1 server to another location, but no ACL information was included in the restoration.
My only desire at this point is to find a way to discover the ACL information with regard to that data. There were a LOT of group-related access rights on this server.
Even though it wouldn't be my responsibility to recreate those rights, I'd like to see if I can recover it somehow.
What would be the expected result of attempting to restore both the data and the eDirectory info from tape backup of the NetWare 5.1 server to a newly created NW6.5SP8 server?
I don't care how much the server complains about not seeing the rest of the network, as long as I can log into it and look at the file rights information.
If I were to create a new server in its own tree, isolated from the production network, and attempt to restore both data and eDirectory to the server, would it be logical to expect the ACl information to be restored?
I may still have a NW5.1 server CD around somewhere, but if I can accomplish my goal with a NW6.5 server, it'd be faster.
Any thoughts are welcome.Thank you for your response, Anders
Yes, I'm referring to file rights.
I'm confused, then.
I have always thought that trustee rights involved both eDirectory and the file system; that without eDirectory the file system wouldn't be able to correlate the trustee rights to eDirectory objects (users, groups, etc...).
For instance, I have an OES 11 server that does not use the NSS file system.
I set it up as an NCP server and used the Migration utility to copy files from an NW6.5 server to its ext3 volume
The trustee rights were retained for those files.
I assumed that this was due to the eDirectory information.
If trustee rights are contained in the file system, this becomes even more mysterious to me.
I know for a fact that the data NSS volume on the crashed server had a LOT of trustee rights assignments; this group has a lot of programs that can't be allowed to see each others' data.
Their IT person also backs up the same data, although with a different backup program.
Restoration from his backup had the same result; no trustee rights.
The crashed server still exists, although its SYS volume is corrupted.
Both its SYS volume and it's data volume reside on the same drive, which is mirrored within NetWare.
My next thought was to mount those drives in another computer and see if the data volume remains un-corrupted. -
Hi,
I've been using a TP-Link wireless router for some time, but it has been proving unreliable, so I've dug out my old Apple Airport to see if it performs more reliably or perhaps it's an ISP connection problem.
I am on a metropolitan area network in BeiJing city. It provides a 10BaseT connection and a public, dynamic IP address via PPPoE.
I had my TP-Link set up to provide IP addresses via DHCP starting at 192.168.189.100. This would allow me to manually assign addresses below that, yet still allow random devices to connect.
Now I am trying to configure the Airport to do the same thing, but I don't see a way.
There only seem to be :
1) distribute IP addresses or not
a) share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT)
b) share a range of IP addresses (using only DHCP)
It won't let me disable 1), which is essentially a DHCP server. It complains :
"Distribute IP addresses must be on for a modem (PPP) or PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) connection."
That sounds like bollocks to me.
In any case, if I enable DHCP, but select option b), it complains :
"Sharing a range of DHCP addresses requires the base station to be configured using static IP addresses."
That also sounds like bollocks to me.
What is going on? How can I get it to do what I want; that is, either :
1) dhcp starting at a specific address, or
2) no dhcp - I'll assign my own addresses manually
Max.Indeed - you cannot.
You must have the Base Station's NAT router and DHCP server enabled, because it needs to handle the PPPoE connection with your ISP. If you turned off the Base Station's NAT router and DHCP server, the Airport Base Station would act as a bridge and all wireless devices on your LAN would be connected directly to the internet (and would also have to negotiate their own PPPoE connections).
The Base Station's DHCP server is designed by default to hand out IP addresses in the range 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200. The range of addresses 10.0.1.x where x>200 are free for you to use for manual IP addressing.
The Airport Base Station provides fairly rudimentary configuration options - which serve the majority of people likely to buy this product very well. For advanced network setups you need to buy a more configurable router.
