PPRO CS5.5 - Clumsy handling of Split Stereo Files

Hi....
I work in ProtoolsHD and thus with Split-Stereo files which is standard in that part of the industry.
I would have thought that PPRO would conform to standards and recognize i.e. AudioFile.L & AudioFile.R as being a stereo-pair.
It does not.
So I went ahead and created TWO mono tracks, then selected the .L & .R audio file in the project panel, wanting to drag them into the PPRO timeline.
Instead of putting the files on the two monaural audio tracks, PPRO would put them on the same track only .R would be inserted AFTER .L.
Not very pleasing when dealing with 100 audio clips. And NOT conforming to professional audio standards at all
I went back to PT and interleaved all the splits. But this is not very economical as in case changes are to be made to the score later on.
Then I would have to, in ProtoolsHD, first change the Split and THEN again, convert it to interleaved.
Not a HUGE problem but for an NLE with the word PRO in it, I sure would come to expect that it would handle and recognize Split Stereo Files
Thanks

Jeff,
thanks for chiming in... However, when you import a split stereo file it worx like this
AudioFile.L
AudioFile.R
Two files. Not one.
PPRO does not recognize the Split stereo elements and treats them as two monural files.
So when you open the modify audio file dialog it will only open either one at a time and look like below
Thanks for taking the time to post, though !

  • How do I bounce two mono split stereo files to one mp3?

Might sound like a stupid question, but I have several problems:
I bounced a waveburner-mix of my favorite songs as a split stereo file and inserted the two files in two logic mono audio tracks.
First problem: Do I have to pan the left audio-track left and the right to the right or do I keep them centered?
Second problem: The two tracks are louder than the original track. (no matter, if they are panned or centered. Shouldn´t the original have the same volume at my output-channel?
Third problem: Is it possible to bounce more than 2 GB with Logic 8? The mix is very long and when I want to bounce it, logic tells me that it is too big. Can I bounce larger files with logic 9 under OS 10.6?

    Felix Bartelt wrote:
Last question remaining: Can I bounce larger files under Logic 9 and OS 10.7. or does L9 also have the 2 GB restriction?
No and no. The file size restriction is not Logics' restriction, it is a restriction of the file type itself. To be able to bounce longer and/or bigger files, use .caf.
    From the manual:
+AIFF: The AIFF file format cannot handle audio file recordings larger than 2 GB:+
++For 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo files, this equals a recording time of about 3 hours and 15 minutes.+
    +For 24-bit, 96 kHz, 5.1 surround files, this equals a recording time of about 20 minutes.+
+WAVE (BWF): The WAVE file format cannot handle audio file recordings larger than 4 GB:+
+For 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo files, this equals a recording time of about 6 hours and 30 minutes.+
    +For 24-bit, 96 kHz, 5.1 surround files, this equals a recording time of about 40 minutes.+
+CAF: If the size of your recording exceeds the above limits, choose the CAF (Apple Core Audio Format) file format, which can handle the following recording times:+
    +About 13 hours and 30 minutes at 44.1 kHz+
    +About 6 hours at 96 kHz+
    +About 3 hours at 192 kHz+
+The bit depth and channel format—mono, stereo, or surround— *do not affect* the maximum recording size of CAF files.+

  • Splitting Stereo Files

How do you split stereo files in Logic? Anyone? Whenever I import a stereo file, it comes as one interleaved track. I change the track to accept stereo files (at the bottom of the fader in the lower left hand corner) and even when I double-click on the file, I see two channels, yet I can't alter them. Is there a way to fix this? Please help. Thanks.

I see two channels, yet I can't alter them. Is there a way to fix this?
Is your question: "How do I split a stereo interleaved file into two mono files with Logic?" or is your question "How do I use split stereo (dual-mono) files in Logic?"
For the first, there are options in the audio window to convert and split files.
If it's the second, then you can turn "Universal Track mode" OFF in your audio preferences - now all channels are mono and stereo files are controlled by two mono faders.
However, working in this mode is kinda ugly and has some disadvantages, but if you prefer it, fair enough.
Finally, if you just want to be able to process left and right channels of a stereo file independently, you can always route to a couple of busses and pan left or right to get the two halves, or duplicate your stereo track and select "Left channel only" and "Right channel only" by click holding on the O-OO stereo channel selector.
    Does that help?

  • "disconnect split stereo files" not working

I'm trying to split a stereo audio file into two mono files (manual page 855):
    Disconnecting Split Stereo Files
Both sides of a split stereo file are normally edited together. On
occasion, however, you may need to edit one side individually.
To disconnect a split stereo file:
1 Select (either side of) the split stereo file in the Audio Bin.
2 Choose Edit > Disconnect Selected Split Stereo File.
You can now edit both sides of the recording as individual mono files. This function will
only disconnect one split stereo file at a time.
When I select the stereo file in the Audio Bin and choose "disconnect selected split stereo file", the following pops up:
"please select exactly the split stereo audio file you want to disconnect"
    I thought I was?
I see the two interconnected circles signifying a stereo file. I choose that file and follow the instructions above but I cannot split the file.

I think I misunderstood. You don't have a split stereo file, you want to split an interleaved file. I see no split stereo files (suffix .L and .R) in your screenshot, so...
From the local Audio Bin menu, choose *Copy/Convert File(s)*
In the conversion dialog, set *Stereo Conversion* to *Interleaved to Split*. Check the *Add to Audio Bin* option. Now two files, suffixed .L and .R, will appear in the audio bin. These are split stereo files.
    regards, Erik.
Oh, and this is how to post screenshots:
The pic needs to be online
Once you've uploaded it, go to where it is uploaded, right- or ctrl-click on the picture and choose *Copy Link Location*. Go to your post and add the following syntax to it:
    {IMG src="pastecopiedImageLocation"}
You must substitute < and > for the {}braces shown above, and +the quotation marks are essential+.
Use the Preview tab (right above the five format buttons) when writing a post to check if the screenshot shows up in your post, before actually posting it.

  • Logic 8 plays split stereo files random

When I play a split stereo file Logic 8 plays those files random, they aren't synced together. Sometimes some audio files aren't playing at all. Stop and play solves in most cases this problem. I have this on several harddisks.
It seems like a defragmented harddisk. I erased and re-formatted the harddisk already, no results. I use DAE and Core Audio together.
    Any suggestions?
    Wim

try to use only built-in driver...
which are the interfaces that you have for not DAE tracks?
Is this issue only on the DAE tracks?
This not a Logic problem .. or better I never got this problem!
How many DAE tracks are in your DAE preference settings...
are you sure that you have the DAE DSPs power that can play all tracks that you have selected?

  • Packing Split Stereo Files in a Take (Comp) Folder

    Hi everybody
is it possible to pack Stereo Split Files in a take-folder. I can do this with interleaved files, but not with split stereo files..
    Thanks Bernhard

    Hi,
Except for composite.xml, none of the other files you mentioned(wsdl file, xsd, .jca, .xml etc.) have code in them. .jca file is like config file for JCA Adapters, wsdl and xsd are service artifacts.
The control starts with the endpoint of the service and would propagate to the other components of the composite like mediator, bpel, human taskflow or references like database adapter,JMS adapter depending on the composite design.

  • Odd issue when splitting stereo files..

One very useful feature in AA CS 5.5 is splitting stereo wavs into two mono files. I work in games developer and need this.
But an issue has arisen with a tool I use that converts to a particular format for Sony PSP games: it doesn't like these split files. It's fine with the stereo files and with other mono samples, but not the product of the "Split to Mono" function.
Does something happen to the .wavs when this is carried out; are they 'different' in some way? Opening them and using "Save As.." to create a new file solves the problem but it would be good to know why it's happening.

  • Space Designer - Loading Split Stereo IR's

    Hi,
First of all please accept my apologies if this question has been answered before.
I've finally started creating presets for the 100's of IR's I have, and I just wanted to check that my assumption is correct: When attempting to load a split stereo IR, does selecting one side (say left) automatically load both sides? Based on what I can hear it seams to but i just wanted to confirm this.
The Plug-In Manual (page 120) doesn't specifically say anything about this. It just says:
"Simply browse to the desired file, and click OK. Any mono, stereo or split stereo AIFF, SDII or WAV file can be used."
Again, sorry for being so dense about all this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank so much much guys.
What's the best way of joining split stereo files? Some of the IR's weren't connected to the opposite side.
If I highlight both of them in the Audio Window and select the convert/copy command from the edit menu will that be that same as if I'd added them to the arrange window and bounced the as stereo. Ideally I'd rather not use the scond method.
    Thanks again.

  • .dlx-files not loading in PPro CS5

    Hi Community,
just upgraded from PPro CS4 to CS5 (no Trial). I tried to move the .dlx-videofiles from my Sony DSR-DU1 HDD Drive to PPro CS5 and it says "File Format not supported". The same file on the same machine worked just an hour ago with PPro CS4. Officially .dlx-files are supported (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WSd79b3ca3b623cac97fa024001235833a568-800 0.html), but i can't load them into PPro CS5.
Though Adobe states that .dlx-files are supported they can't be imported to PPro CS5.
    What is the problem?
    Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure what wasn't compatible, but that list wasn't updated - the VDU support was lost in PPro's port to 64 bit native.
    Sorry

  • Import OMF Convert Split stereo to interleaved

Is there a way when importing an omf from Pro tools into Logic 9 so convert the split stereo files into
    interleaved while importing?

No, but you can do it after the import from the bin. Just select the file (s) and choose "copy convert" from the Audio file window, then select "split to interleaved" from the stereo conversion drop down menu.
Or ( from the bin again )
You can Choose Edit > Reconnect All Split Stereo File

  • Splitting multichannel files (5 or more channels)  to mono

So why doens't logic allow me to import and split out multichannel AIFFs? I can create them with max/msp or "sound studio" a freeware app, but then I can't edit them since logic only works with stereo or mono. I am also having a hard time finding a utility that does this for me offline. Any suggestions? I do notice that Nuendo can handle and split multichannel files.

one program that does do this is
    Sample Manager
    http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/sample_manager.php
This is a handy app. Having multiple channels interleaved is so handy, and it's been a part of the aiff format for years. But why doesn't any app take advantage of this? or at least support this aspect of the format? Anyways, the trial period s 15 days for this program. enough to convert my files. if i like it i may buy it, it think it is around $70. If anyone knows of a freeware app that does the same thing, please tell

  • How to convert false (dual mono) stereo files ?

I imported an enormous amount of regions from a Final Cut Pro project, and because the cameras each had mono mics but were recording audio in stereo, all the audio files are technically stereo, but contain only mono information.
So I've got hundreds of stereo-interleaved files in my Logic session, but each file contains only mono information, so my project is twice the size it needs to be.
Can anyone suggest a way to remove all that redundant information ? What I want to do is split all the interleaved files, then select all the .R files and delete them, but I don't see any way to accomplish this in Logic, other than file-by-file (I have 500 of them...)
Anyone been down this path ?
    Thanks!
    -James

Hey, thanks for all the suggestions, Seeren!
I'm not sure how your method is generating only .L files for you--when I split interleaved, I always get both sides... but not a big deal. It's easy enough to delete half the audio.
The real problem is getting the files replaced without losing all the arrange work: your method requires manually replacing the old stereo files with the new mono files in the arrange, which would be a ton of work in large projects like mine...
But... I did find a solution to this--it's not exactly elegant, though, because it requires some filename hacking:
Turns out if you have a reference to a stereo interleaved file in your project, and you replace it with a mono file of exactly the same length and filename, Logic will happily accept the substitution without a complaint. So the way to replace all the stereo files with the .L files is:
    1) Copy the stereo interleaved files into split stereo, then remove the new split stereo files from the audio bin (but leave them on disk)
    2) Close the project
    3) Remove the original stereo files from the "Audio Files" folder, and delete the .R files.
    ...that's all easy... then...
    4) Rename all those .L files, removing the .L so they have the same names as the original stereo files
    5) Reopen your project--Logic will now refer to the new mono files, not the original stereo files
Step #4 requires some hacking to do efficiently: I used the command line to rename all those files quickly. There are probably utilities out there that could have done the job with a GUI, and AppleScript could probably do it, too.
Anyway... this works, if it's helpful to anyone else.
But ultimately I guess this is a feature request: it's cool that Logic makes it so easy to manipulate split stereo files as a single unit. But there are occasional times when you need to manipulate stereo files individually. There should be a track command in the arrange that takes a stereo track and replaces it with two mono tracks... rather surprising this doesn't seem to exist (it's one mouse click in ProTools [ducking])...

  • Working with BOTH channels of a stereo file INDIVIDUALLY?

Most of the content I use are interleaved stereo files. The sample editor displays both the right and the left channel of stereo files but my question is: How can we actually work with either the left or the right channel. It's great that I can see both in the sample editor but is there anything I can do in Logic to separate an interleaved file into two channels?
    Thanks!

bounce it out or copy/convert from the audio bin, as a split stereo file. rename as Left and Right rather than .L and .R - then reimport as two mono wavs

  • Broadening or narrowing stereo files

I work a lot in sound design. It's important for me that i get total control of how wide the stereo perspective is in every file i use.
But in Logic i can only pan from left to right. I can not center both of the sides?
Is there a way that you can change the pan from only one to both of the stereo sides?

    Sampleconstruct wrote:
Or if you want it the oldschool way you can convert your interleaved stereo file into a split stereo file, separate the split stereo file into two independent regions, put them on two mono tracks and pan them around as you like to.
Alternatively, you can create a duplicate channel strip with the same audio, and at the bottom of the channel strips, change one from "Stereo" to "Left" and the other from "Stereo" to Right." Pan each as desired to control your stereo width.
    Example:
    http://www.digitaldroo.com/logicforum/leftright.mov
But then again, it's easier just to add a Direction Mixer plugin.
By the way, with the Direction Mixer plugin, you can actually broaden the width of the stereo field beyond what you can do with two channels panned hard left and hard right. This pretty much affects mono compatibility in the mix, but the option is there if you want it.
