PPro CS6:  Source Monitor Dropping Frames

Greetings,
Currently I'm working off an iMac, OSC 10.8.4, 12 GB RAM, with i7, and ATI Radeon 1GB video card.  I haven't noticed it recently until today for some reason, but my source monitor keeps dropping frames like crazy after about 5 seconds of playback.
I've read other threads that recommend lower preview frame res, as well as playback res to 1/4.  I've tried that, allocated more memory to PPro (only 2GB left to other applications, yet PPro seems to only use 1.9GB during dropped frame playback), shut down other proccesses that might be consuming memory, switched PPro to enable better "Performance" in preferences, and rebooted several times.
I realized that it could be the source footage from the start:  1080p 23.976fps TIFF sequence.
How can I get PPro to actually use more than 1.9GB of memory during playback in order to get over this TIF hump?  Or does the real answer lie not in memory, but more processing power?
Not a job-threatening situation, but just curious as to what it takes.
Thanks!
-Hunter

Okay, thanks for the additional infor. I've taken note of this issue and will investigate when we return from the company shutdown on July 8.

  • Client Monitor Dropping Frames with a GTX 570?

I have a 2 monitor setup which are both connected to my GTX 570. I edit on one monitor and play HD video full screen on the client monitor. The video was shot on my Panasonic GH2. Premiere Pro CS5.5 would play this video silky smooth but CS6 drops frames so badly that I woldnt be surprised if it was playing 12 frames per sec.
When I turn off CUDA accleration the video plays a lot smoother.
Is anybody else having this problem?
P.S. I have the latest Premiere Pro update os 6.0.1 and I am using the latest Nvidia drivers. I even installed the older drivers that I was using with CS5.5 and the video is still dropping frames like crazy.

This is a known problem with AVCHD and maybe other codecs. The new 6.0.1 helps but does not completely eliminate the playback problem, which I see especially after scrubbing.  Maybe your video is more compressed than mine is.  See also This thread

  • Playback in monitor drops frames

    Hi,
I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0. I am editing MPG files shot on my camcorder, I can import these successfully but the playback in the main monitor window drops more frames than it actually displays. The sound is fine, just the video causes problems.
The file that is output plays back perfectly, as does the original footage when viewed in Windows Media, it just makes editing difficult when you can not see the footage frame by frame during playback.
Why does this happen and is there a solution?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob.

Rendering previews only helps if you export to DV-AVI and uncheck the "always render" option.
It's easy enough to prove that it doesn't help when exporting to DVD. Take a short clip and put it on the timeline twice. Increase the brightness of the second clip slightly so you can distinguish it from the first clip. Now render a preview. Two preview files will be created. Now exit out of Premiere Elements. Use Windows Explorer to swap the names of the two preview files. Now go back into Premiere Elements and load the project. The green line is still there, but now the second brighter clip is in the first position. Now export to DVD and you will see that the rendered files were not used to create the DVD because the brighter clip is in the second position. The rendered files were completely ignored.

  • Source Monitor 'Freezes' Forces PPro Restart. Glitch, CS6?

    Hi all,
I have been experiencing an issue with the source monitor in several projects built in CS6.  Occasionaly, I will double click a clip in the project window, or even right click and 'Open in Source Monitor'.  Most of the time this functions successfully and the clip appears in the monitor, but at some point clips, any clip, refuses to open/appear in the source monitor.  The source monitor enter a 'frozen' state and will have a strange appearance for example displaying the audio meters from the 'Audio Mixer' tab.  It seems the only way to cure this once it has occurred is to close PPro and re-open the project.  At this point this is proving to be a waste of time and a kink in an editor's flow.
Has anyone else experience this symptom?
    Thanks,
    Lindsay

  • Drop frames on external monitor

Hi, recently im having some troubles with cc 7.2.1, one of them is when i have cuda enabled i have droped frames on my external and program monitor, but the timeline is fast and i can edit, im editing a short documentary with 4 hours of footage in h264 from 5D an 7 D, on a usb 3 external. I have a macbook pro (late 2013) 16G ram , i 7, mavericks osx.
When i select software only i dont have drop frames on my external but i can't edit, because everything on the timeline lags. Image takes a long time to load on the program monitor and external monitor, impossible to do trim, takes ages for images with time code to apear.
When scrubing on the timeline, the CTI takes a lot of time to catch up. It seems like she is connected to a ruber band, it moves back before moving to my selected position!!
Do you guys think deleting cache and preferences will help? ( how can i delete them ?)
    Thanks

    Hi,
I was wondering if there had been any progress on this?  I'm experiencing a similar problem myself with my MacBook Pro (Late 2013, i7, Nvidia 750M) in that I'm getting dropped frames when using an external monitor.  My set up may be slightly different though but the results appear similar.
My timeline, program and source windows are all on the external monitor (Samsung SA850) connected via thunderbolt to mini display port.  The playback monitor window is set to full screen on the MacBook pro and that is where the dropped frames occur. If I unselect using a playback monitor and just use the external Samsung as described, things appear fine.
I'm editing a mixture of H264 and ProRes clips on an hour long timeline with nested sequences.
Any advice on possible solutions or things to try in order to troubleshoot would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks.

  • Why does sound stop in source monitor (Pr CS6) while playing a film?

    Hi,
I started a project and watch a lot of files in the source monitor to set IN and OUT points. When the file playes f.e. more than a minute the sound gets muted while the film is still running. First I thought it wood be a matter of my external HD from where I loaded the files. Now that I take the same or any other files from my internal sata 3 harddrive the behaviour is still the same.
When i scroll the mouse wheel to move some frames back and forth the sound is back when i hit the space bar. It's the same if i just hit the space bar once to pause and then hit it again to resume.
The effect shows after different amount of times, sometimes after 45 sec. and sometimes after 2 minutes +
I am running Pr Pro CS6 (latest update installed some days ago) on a windows 7 ultimate x64, 16 GB of ram, Nvidia GTX 670, i7 3770, HD is a WD caviar black
The movie clips come from a Panasonic Lumix FZ 150 in FullHD resolution as h.264 MP4 files.
I am quite sure that some months ago this behaviour was not present. I did not change anything on Premiere CS6 but running the updates.
Does anybody have the same problem on his machine?

I think I found the reason.
When I doubleclicked a file so that it is loaded into the source monitor I always started playing immediately. In most cases the bar on the bottom right was not finished adjusting the file (whatever that means).
But when I load a file and wait until the adjustment is finished before I start the clip in the source monitor the sound remains. I'm not 100% sure that this is the solution but maybe it's close to it. All the clips I tested so far letting the adjustment finish did not lose the sound so that someone could guess the "problem" is just a matter of interrupting a process of the software that needs an amount of time to be done which depends on the power of the used hardware and might not need to be fixed.

  • Why are Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 source and program monitors playing each others footage?

Why are Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 source and program monitors playing each others footage? I import my footage into the project like normal. I drag it to the source monitor on the left hand side to set in and out points then I drag it to the time line. The footage drops into the time line with no problem but when I go to play the footage in the time line it plays back on the source monitor and not on the program monitor like it is suppose to. Other times ill drag the clip to the time line and trim it there and it will be fine and show up on the program monitor.  Then ill go try to set a clip to have in and out points (which is suppose to show up in the source monitor) but it shows up in the program monitor. The clip is not even in the time line it should not be on that monitor! I have updated the program to the late update. I have re installed the program numerous times and I have even ran the Adobe Clean up program. Couldn't find much on this problem. Please help thank you! I have a PC. My computer is also way over the recommended minimum specifications to have the program installed on.

Definitive Answer (I believe): It's all about this setting, "Write XMP ID To Files On Import" - which confirms that Adobe Premiere Pro is deliberately modifying the .mov file: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/preferences.html#WSE3BD4A43-7022-4fe6-97F5-95313 935347B
These posts give some background as to why having this setting enabled would be beneficial: one benefit being to be able to skip conforming files by matching the conformed file with the original using the embedded XMP tag :-

  • Cc 7.2.1 lags on timeline and program monitor, and drop frames.

Hello guys i have cc 7.2.1, and every basic operation i do on the timeline , moving clips, trimiming, scrubing on the timeline everything lags, its not fluid. When i do a simple scrubring on the timeline, the CTI takes sometime to get to the position i selected to do the playback.
But the worst part is the trimming or moving clips, it takes ages before i get an image on the program monitor. If i move a clip into a middle of 2 clips it takes ages to see those two little privews images with timecode, to see where to put it. So is very hard to edit like this.
Another odd thing is when in redering mode i select to use sofware only i dont have drop frames, when i chose cuda i have drop frames!!
I´m editing h254 from a 5d and 7d on externa llaccie usb 3 , have the a macbookpro 16g i7, iris pro and nvidia 750m, and a external samsung, via DVI.
    Anny sugestions?
    thank you.

    Thanks for the Tips.
One thing that i discoverd was, when software only is enabled i can't edit. Everything as that lag i reported above, but i have no drop frames with external monitor.
Now comes the funny part, when i enable CUDA for my Nvidia gt 750m, i can edit !!! everything becomes almost normal, image on program monitor comes quick, and i can do trims. BUT i have drop frames on external monitor!!!!! so therefore i cant have a proper edit enviroment.
The only solution is to edit without an external monitor with cuda enabled, that way i dont have drop frames. I guess this is a syntom, that something is not working well on CC 7.2.1.
    Thank you all.

  • Has anyone else experienced a glitch when making cuts? Many of my cuts slip a frame or two when moved from source monitor to sequence and it started with the latest update

Once I updated to the latest version of Premiere 2014.2 I started experiencing a glitch when my cuts would slip a frame or two. At first it was randomly. Then I had footage I was using that was an .avi file that I converted to .m4v using vlc and now in my Premiere project, are having the greatest difficulty keeping my original cut that I create in my source monitor. When I bring it into my timeline, the new frames are added. When I double click the clip into my source monitor, I see that my original cuts remain, not shifted. Looking back in my timeline, unwanted frames are still there. I have to bring it into my source monitor to guess where the right frame would be to compensate for this. It happens more often with the converted files but still happens to .mp4s as well. I am using a Mac Pro 15-in from Early 2011. Thanks for the advice in advance!

I downloaded and installed the latest iTunes 11.2.1 (1) update yesterday. It appears to have corrected this issue to a large extent: plugging in an iThing to sync no longer seems to cause explosive growth in memory footprint. leaks reports a much slower growth in dead memory:
leaks -nocontext -nostacks iTunes | grep total
Process 27307: 353 leaks for 726488 total leaked bytes.
    20 minutes later:
leaks -nocontext -nostacks iTunes | grep total
Process 27307: 364 leaks for 1256056 total leaked bytes.
20 minutes later, after DLing updated apps and doing another sync:
leaks -nocontext -nostacks iTunes | grep total
Process 27307: 364 leaks for 1256056 total leaked bytes.
Memory allocation started at 70Mb, grew to 200Mb, and appears to have stabilized there.
I'm going to keep an eye on it overnight, but it looks as if this may not be a complete system killer as it was before, at least in my case. In any case, I can highly recommend this latest iTunes update for anyone else experiencing this specific issue. Updating bug 16772016 with this new information.

  • Drag and Drop to Source Monitor but not Double Click?

Has anyone seen this issue?  I've got an importer plugin.  If you drag and drop a clip into the source monitor, then it works fine.  But if you double click it then nothing happens.  Any idea why this would happen?  Normal clips (like MOV files) work fine so there must be something wrong with my plugin.
    Thanks!

Thanks Steve!  For any one else with the same issue, the actual culprit was setupOnDblClk.

  • CS6/CC - switching between source monitor and timeline disaster

    Now what is this?
It all works fine until you try DV Output.
In DV Output mode every time you switch between source monitor and the timeline it goes to some scary ritual:
    1. output disabled on external monitor
    2. some crazy flickering happens
    3. ok, now updated picture on external monitor finally appears
Same happens when switching back to timeline.
Also when scrubbing through timeline video and audio is late for a few centuries on DV device/external monitor/speaker.
Why Adobe screwed firewire environment editing? I'm thinking about changing my job. Editing with Premiere is killing me lately. I'm thinking about starting to work with bees or strawberries, or something else less frustrating.
And Premiere CS 5.5 was the best editing software ever released. It has no similar problems. Why CS6 and CC are retarded?

I'm just asking for properly working feature which is alredy implemented and worked fine in earlier versions.
Adobe, can this be fixed, please?

  • No more exporting clips from Source Monitor in Premiere CS6?

In Premiere CS4 I used to double click a clip on timeline (to open it in Source Monitor), and then immediately hit File>Export Media. It would then automatically selelct this specific clip for export without the need to set In and Out points. In Premiere CS6 it doesn't seem to work, meaning that if I want to export individual clips from timeline, I need to create In and Out points for each export , which is quite time consuming comparing to CS4, especially when working with many clips. I already found 2 useful features, that were just eliminated in Premiere CS6, and I don't understand why to destry something that works?!
Or is there another way to do it?

    Jim Simon wrote:
CS6 works just like CS4 did on this one.
Not in my case (I'm on Mac, maybe in Windows it's different?): in CS4 I double-click a clip in a timeline, it opens in the source monitor, and I click Export. I immediately get only this specific cut selected as a work area without any need to mark in/out, or to define work area. In CS6 just doesn't happen... Can you confirm that CS6 also does it and can you tell me your configuration and version?

  • PPro cs 6.0.2 Export to Tape Dropped Frames

My specs are in my profile pic (pending approval).  I just upgraded to PP cs6 and have an odd thing happening.  Has anyone else seen this?  Does anyone have an explanation?
Whenever I output to tape (FireWire to Panasonic AJ-D250, DVC Pro), I get dropped frames.  Anywhere from 2-30 but I only get them in the first five seconds or so.  After that I don't think it drops a darn thing.  I don't hear or see any stutters in my output as of yet.  I usually start with five seconds of black so I really don't care if that has drops. This is more of an oddity at this point.
What I've tried, each case the timeline was fully rendered:
Output from a different drive (single 7200 SATA)
Creating a single media file and outputting that
Outputting NOTHING (put something in the timeline, increase the work area, delete the instance)
Clean Cache & delete prefs and retry the above
I think I forgot something else but that is my list.
I reinstalled PP cs 5.5 and tried an output from that.  All was golden...no drops and smooth playing.
I'm playing back NTSC video off a 5TB RAID drive, it's not like I'm trying to play 1080i off a memory card or anything.
So that's what I've got going.  Like I said, an oddity.  The moment this starts to hinder the important stuff, the stuff that goes on air or in presentations, then I'm going to be a little more upset.

I don't use tape, but I do have a few saved links that may help

Hardware MPE must be OFF to be able to export via Firewire

  • Non drop from a drop frame source

(back story) We search footage from proxy files then recapture at full rez
I logged footage and made new batch capture log files. I went to capture the footage and FCP said I was about to capture non drop frame footage from a drop frame source. It doesn't do this if i log with a tape in the deck.
So my question is, how can I make logs without tapes in the decks and then batch capture and not have this problem?

when you log from a tape in the deck FCP, the communication between FCP and the deck lets FCP know whether the source is Drop or non drop code.
When you log by hand you need to tell FCP whether the code is drop or non drop
Generally speaking colons in the TC means non drop and semicolons denotes drop frame.
What codes are your proxies showing?
