PPro Performance on MacBook Pros

If any of you guys could chime in on what your experiences are like using CS5 PPro on your MacBooks Pros, i would appreciate it.
I know its not the most optimal since its not a GeForce/Quadro card but i imagine alot of people will use them either
alone or in conjunction with their MacPro Desktops. I have a 17" MBP 2.8. My issue is should i go with a Mac version and get a MacPro later,
or build a PC. I could also run a PC version on Bootcamp/Parallels too i guess but not sure if thats compatible. Thanks!

I'm using the entry level MacBook with 2 GB RAM and a 23" display and I love it. My previous machine was an old G5 with 1.5GB RAM so the jump was pretty big. I'm using LR (24.000 CR2 files) and CS3 a lot.

  • Vista & OSX wifi performance on MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz, 4Gb ram, OSX 10.5.2, Airport Extreme 802.11n, Airport Express 802.11n extending network
Noticing dreadful wifi performance while running OSX (trace below) compared to performance when runing Vista (Bootcamp) on the same laptop. In both traces I'm pinging the DNS server for the connection. As a result web browsing in OSX is awful compared to Vista. Signal strength is also much better under Vista (96%) than OSX (56%) I'm 4 feet from the Airport Express which extends the Extreme BS in another room.
Any idea what could be causing this ? This has been going on for a while to the extent I had the Airport card replaced under warranty today. Presumably ths must be an OSX issue as dual-booting into Vista effectively rules out hardware isues.

  • Fixing unstable performance on macbook pro

    Hi team,
I have a macbook pro bought nov 2011
It has run fine but recently I have been using it constantly for my new job running Adobe software like Flash, premiere pro and after effects (mainly flash) cs5.5
intel i7 2.4ghtz quad core with 8Gb ram, shipped with Lion, I have run apple hardware test (short and long) and found no problems.
Ok so I am having strange behaviour, the audio keeps killing itself, and I have to run the terminal sudo killall coreaudiod.
My programs are crashing constantly- mainly Flash, Ihave been working on my project for two months and all of a sudden it has become highly unstable, sometimes crashing 10 times in a row.
I am constantly fixing disk permissions
    Permissions differ on “usr/lib/ruby”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .
even if I fix the disk permissions and then do it again straight after I get this same message
I have got a bootcamp partition on this laptop and it does not show up on the mac side, it is greyed out when looking at it in disk utility.
Now I do have an older macbook pro and I know that this is not how it should be.
I am getting a new windows workstation (sorry mac fans!) to run 3DS max and as soon as it comes and I have transferred all data I will try to reinstall lion on this macbook and stop running bootcamp, I have found this laptop does not like it (bootcamping that is)..... but does anyone have any short term solutions for me? I am running time machine so I can get data back.
I have never has this kind of performance problems from a mac before (and I have worked with a lot)
any ideas how to start enjoying to work on this machine rather than it being an extended scary and stressful experience.
    Cheers
    sub

Likely it might be that your Adobe software is not updated or works well with 10.7
The repair permissions is always going to say that, why it's like this still in 10.7 remains a mystery.
    Check your version of Flash

Check your Adboe software if it's current / works well with Lion

  • Yosemite performance on MacBook Pro - Core2Duo

I have been running Yosemite on my MBP for a few days now and have found the performance to be phenomenal!  The graphics are actually smoother and faster than on Mavericks (I have a  mid 2009 15" MacBook Pro Core2Duo with 512 MB video ram and 8GB of RAM.)  I did do a clean install and reinstalled all my apps-- here are the instructions I followed (its for Mavericks, but works with Yosemite also): http://mashable.com/2013/10/23/clean-install-os-x-mavericks/
Hope this helps folks wondering whether to upgrade or not.  I am glad I did-- am a really big fan of Yosemite.  It's a beautiful update.

It's normal since Mavericks for almost all memory to be in use, either by applications or by the file cache. That's what you should want, since unused memory is going to waste. The relevant measure of whether memory is in short supply is what Apple calls "memory pressure."
Apple's explanation of memory pressure is here. If you want a more detailed, technical description, see here.
Get rid of "Memory Clean," which is worse than useless.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Running Aperture and Slow Performance on MacBook Pro

I am running a MacBook pro w 4 GM interal memory, lost of HD space, and OS 10.8.4.  Often when working with Aperture system performance seems very sluggish to the point of becoming unuseable.  Export of 20 images to mail can take 10 min.  It just becomes so slow as if strangled for memory.  I find I shut down other apps but don't think this should be necessary with current OS technology.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Have you checked what it going on, when Aperture becomes sluggish?
I'd recommend to launch some diagnostic tools, if you have not already done so:
Aperture's own "Activity Viewer": From the main menu bar: Window > Show Activity
This will tell you, how Aperture is spending its time : rendering, previews, scanning for faces or places, raw processing. Inparticulur, check, if Aperture is hanging while processing one particular image or video over and over again.
The Console window: Launch it from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. Look, if you see error messages or warnings in this window, when Aperture starts to hang.
The Activity Monitor: Launch it from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. This window will tell you, which processes are using the cpu, the RAM, and doing page outs to the disk. You can see, if other processing are competing with Aperture and slowing it down, orif Aperture is starved for memory.
How large are images? Do you have very large raw files or scans, or are your photos moderately sized?
Is your library on the internal drive or an external drive?
Do you see this slowness only with your main Aperture library, or also, if you create a new, small library with a few test images?
    Regards
    Léonie

  • Slow performance from macbook pro

I am running a macbook pro on 10.6.8.  Generally speaking it is very slow and speed doesn't always seem to correlate to the load, though the load does tend to run high. On average it's 1.5-2 load, even at times where it gets down to about 1 it is not uncommon for programs to take seconds to launch, the keyboard buffer gets backed up when i'm typing and i'll type for 10 seconds and nothing will display, then it'll catch up and display all of the words i've typed. Often times in Terminal mode even if i try to run a simple command like launching a text editor like joe, it'll take 5-10 seconds to load.
I usually have outlook open but even when i close it, it doesn't decrease the load very much.
Any ideas on where to start?

    Start with:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    And, also:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Lion Cache Cleaner, CockTail, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • How to improve performance on MacBook Pro 10.5.8?

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 that has become way too slow. It hesitates between key strokes and response and is slow to search and navigate websites.
I just checked and there are no updates due.
What can I do to improve performance?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are several lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search. A text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/ {print $6 $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple/ {print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple/ {print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get the name of every login item'
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Max Performance for Macbook Pro

I have a Macbook Pro, its the late 2011 13-inch edition. I was hoping to maximize the performance of my macbook by upgrading my 2X2GB RAM to either a 2X4GB(8GB) or 2X8GB(16GB) and also removing my optical drive and adding an SSD.
First of all, I am not sure on what SSD i should purchase? I am thinking either Crucials 128GB V4 or the 128GB M4? The M4 is SATA 6gb/s is that compatiable with my optical drive will i get the max performance or i'm i better sticking with the V4? As i hear the optical drive is resticted to 3gb/s
Secondly would it be a smarter idea to move my existing 500GB hard drive to my optical drive and buying the M4 and installing it in the hard drive space? As thats 6gb/s i think! I don't use much memory i have used about 20gb or something so far hahaha
Can everyone give me their views on whats best to get the max performance of my Macbook Pro and also whats the best items i could get for mac i have a budget of £150.

I want my macbook to be the best performance wise.. i am looking for faster boot up speeds and opening up a number of applications without any lag or lengthy wait time..usually i am running mail, safari, word, messages, facetime and either itunes or spotifiy all at once, as well as using software from uni such as unity, blue-j ect..

  • Cintiq performance on Macbook Pro vs. new Mac Pro

Has anyone used a Wacom Cintiq (I'm using the 20" model) on both a recent Macbook Pro (I've got a 2.4 mhz Santa Rosa 4gb ram) and one of the new 8 core Mac Pros?
I'm interested in the cursor lag in Photoshop CS3 and Painter X.
I realize there are a lot of variables and don't expect any kind of scientific comparison. Just wondering if anyone upgraded and was "Wowed!" by the difference or if there was just a slight improvement.

I have a Cintiq 21UX (since March 2006) on a Quad G5 2.5 with 16 gig and 160 gig scratch and use it from time to time on a 2.33 MacBook Pro with 4 gig.
I have no major problems with Painter X, you can pull it up with big enough files of course but for my use it works great with quad.
On a 10"x10" canvas at 300ppi I can't find any brush to cause it to lag.(give me a file size and ppi and I'll do what ever brush size or any other test you can think of)
Oh yeah, no lag problems at all with CS3.

  • Slow performance with macbook pro retina

Saving an image (JPEG) with my lightning fast new macbook pro 2012 retina edition takes 30-60 seconds.  Any ideas why?  Mountain lion Mac OS, 8GB RAM.  Can't upgrade RAM but shouldn't have to!  I moved images to external hard drive since I was filling up memory on laptop quickly.  I would appreciate ideas from anyone who knows Elements and Mac .  Thanks.

This is my only computer now. Will check into auto analyzer (never heard of it). This is Elements 11, not the whole photoshop.  It is the regular, not app version.  I did move some of the photos from a past pc to it, but it seems to have the same slow speed with new photos as well.  I installed Elements 11 on my mac with a disc.  When I bought it, it came with both pc and mac discs.  A guy at the apple store had me move all the photos onto my external hard drive.  Its a new Apple 3 TB external hard drive.  I actually tried to increase the RAM at the suggestion of my camera club friends who had similar problem and got relief with increasing RAM of 4 up to 12 or 16.  Mine is 8 and can't be increased.

  • Horrible Logic performance on Macbook Pro

I've got a brand new 2.4 mbp with 2gb ram, latest osx and latest logic.
Playing just one sampler instrument often sends one of the cores into overdrive. Often I get spikes which sometimes settle down again, but still hanging at 50-60% FOR ONE SAMPLER VOICE! Playing a chord with a string patch maxes out a core!?!? I usually get similar problems with ES2 and other plugs.
project is in 24/48, 256 buffer, build-in audio
My old 2gz dual core imac behaved fine with L8.
    I am not impressed.
Anyone any similar problems, or tips on how to diagnose this?
As I said, the Macbook is new and had a fresh install.

    Hello there.
Guess we have the same problem and it might be that the solution is 10.5.3 as a bad update!
I am running Logic 8 on two machines: One MacBook Pro 2.33 Intel Duo Core and a Dual Core MacPro G5. before Yesterday everything was fine. Yesterday I have upgraded the Desktop machine from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3. The Laptop runs fine, the Desktop not. I use the same plugin (Eastwest Goliath) same sound and the Desktop kicks away, shows immediately an Overload the Mac Book Pro is just half stressed with the same sound. 2 days ago (when the Desktop machine had also 10.5.2) I had no problems at all. I had this once when I upgraded and since that time I never upgrade two machines at the same time, just filter possible errors. From my point of view the Apple developers take too much care of i tunes and i phones and i works and i books. They should be more careful with you the user. They have to be fast in developing and since 2005 this creates problems.
What can you do? Reinstall an older Leopard? No I simply would wait if possible 2-3 weeks and wait for 10.5.4. or Logic 8.0.3 :-(( This will hopefully fix problems, but for sure generate some new ones we can discuss about I stay with my Laptop on 10.5.2 and make minimal music on the big one
As a little help for the moment: Go down to 16/44.1 and raise buffer to 512, if you can do so.
This will give you a chance to play the Logic instruments and survive until the next upgrade comes.
    Best
    Z

  • Bad Airplay performance with Macbook Pro (10.9.4)

My iPhone and iPad delivers Airplay (almost) without problems to my NAD D7050 receiver. But music sent from my Macbook Pro Retina running 10.9.4 lags so much that there is no use in it. Please advice.
    Thanks

Can you please share the crash log ? The log is at the location: ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (Pick the latest one of Illustrator).

  • Improve performance on macbook pro 2008

I have a macBook pro 2008 15 inch screen (aluminum body)
I have a BIG FAT Aperture library now (25000 images+) and the current config (4 GIG working memory) is just squeaking by
I have been told you can expand the working memory to 8 GIG with OS X- the manual however says max 4.
If you can inform me and have the time, I'd appreciate it
better a hundred or so for new memory than 2K+ for a new machine
thanks to all for reading and considering this request

If Page Ins are more than about 10% of Page Outs after a long day of your normal work, that work would benefit perceptibly from more RAM. The higher the percentage, the greater the benefit. My guess is that with an Aperture Library that large, unless you have nothing but Aperture running, more RAM will probably turn out to be helpful.
If your MBP is one of the unibody models, it can use 8 GB. if it's an early-2008, non-unibody MBP, it can only use 6 GB.

  • Poor graphics performance on Macbook Pro with windows 7 bootcamp

I have a 13" Non-Retina Machbook Pro with Intel HD 4000 Graphics, purchased around 2 years ago. I installed Bootcamp for certain assignments for school, running Windows 7, and started playing videogames on it. I played Dark Souls and Chivalry, mainly, and both ran reliably at a pretty mediocre framerate but with decent graphics settings. I picked up Dark Souls 2 in the summer, and was able to run it and medium-high graphics with decent framerate. several months later, after not having played on Windows for a while, I came back to Dark Souls 2, but found that the game would run with this strange, pulse-y lag, like everything would animate quickly for a moment before pausing and continue again. the framerate itself was normal, it would just stutter constantly. (about one pause per second) and it wasn't a complete freeze, either. The game would move very slowly for a moment instead of freezing.
Anyway I was surprised and decided to test it with Chivalry. Same Problem. Kingdoms of Amalur, same problem. All of these were windows only so I decided to compare something that could run on both platforms. I tested it with league of legends - Mac side: Medium-high graphics with 60 fps. Windows side: Low graphics with pulsing lag and 30fps.
I read through some articles and found something about SMC reset. Tried that. No effect.
Then I updated my drivers. No effect.
Any idea what's wrong with my windows-side graphics?

I have Windows 7 Pro Boot Camped on my Mac Mini (late 2012) HD 4000 as well. Nvidia driver. On a graphics intense game of mine I have learned to just get by. Unfortunately using Nvidia or other graphics driver updates through Windows Update is the best you can do. I would not attempt or recommend a newer graphics driver from the manufacture website. You may end up rendering your Windows unusable. Windows 7 has great benefits on a Mac, but, limited user options. One of my graphics intense programs had to be found and purchased from the App Store. Windows version just would not run correctly. If you are stuck with the RAM that came with your MBP, you may want to upgrade to 8 or the full 16 GB of RAM which may help. Otherwise I find Windows to run quite well. I use it for DVD playback and Media Center which runs great. I have 4 GB of RAM. Cheers!
