PPTP VPN not working on OSX 10.9.2

My PPTP VPN to my office was working fine for more than 1 year.
However, in recently weeks it doesn't work anymore. The message I got as the following screenshot.
I believe the upgrade of 10.9.2 is the cause
I also have Windows VM (parallels) on this box (MBA2012mid), the Windows VPN work very well before and now.
It's very frustrating. (for me, VPN is used in urgent situation when I'm not in office). Can't believe Windows beat OSX at this feature.
Anyone have the same issue ? please share the solution. thanks
Update:  Same issue happen on my iPhone5S (iOS 7.0.6)

  • [Solved] NetworkManager-pptp VPN not working after update to 0.9.10

    Hello,
I have a PPTP VPN set up and it's been working for a long time.  However, after I updated last night to networkmanager-0.9.10, it is no longer able to connect to the remote network.  I can activate the VPN connection, enter my password, but after a short period of time, the connection reports:  "Error: Connection activation failed: the VPN service returned invalid configuration."  As I mentioned before, this VPN was working right before the update and I didn't change the configuration on either my computer or the destination network so I'm pretty sure that this is something to do with the update.  I'm wondering if anybody else has run into this problem and if they've been able to find a solution.  I've been searching all over these forums and the internet for some hours now and I haven't found anything yet.  I'm hoping that somebody might be able to point me in the right direction or maybe know of something that might have changed with the new update.
Here is my VPN configuration (using NetworkManager-PPTP.  I've also obscured the public IP address):
    [connection]
    id=MyVPN
    uuid=fe6e6265-1a79-4a69-b6d1-8b47e9d4c948

    method=auto
    route1=10.17.0.0/16,10.17.1.1,1

Here are my logs during the time that I tried to connect:

If you've gotten this far, thank you for taking the time to read through all this!  Any help that you can give would be much appreciated.

Hmm, not sure about the 3.16 series kernel, but I found that when I upgraded to kernel 3.18 the PPTP VPN also stopped working.  This time, though, it was because, for some reason, there was a change in kernel 3.18 where the firewall kernel modules necessary for the VPN don't get loaded so the firewall won't allow some of the PPTP traffic from the remote side back in.  Since the firewall is stateful, these modules need to be loaded so that the firewall can know that the incoming PPTP traffic from the remote side is part of an existing connection.  Here's what my network manager logs looked like:

To fix this, I had to add a file to the /etc/modules-load.d directory to have the modules loaded into the kernel at boot.  I just created a file called netfilter.conf and put the following in it:
    nf_nat_pptp
    nf_conntrack_pptp
    nf_conntrack_proto_gre
Not sure if this addresses your problem or not, but maybe it's worth a look.

  • Has anyone got PPTP VPN to work on Lion Server?

Has anyone got PPTP VPN to work on Lion Server?
I had a go with the terminal commnds posted by apple support but no joy. Since then Apple has pulled the suport article - is it because it didn't work?
I get PPTP is less secure but PPTP seems to be more reliable don't know whey they can't keep as GUI. I've got them both running on our 10.4 server and L2TP stoped allowing connections for no reason PPTP was still working L2TP started working again on its own. Plus L2TP drops my connection when I connect with a 2nd device e.g connected with my Macbook connect with my iPhone (different username) it drops my Macbook.
Any advice getting PPTP to work on Lion Server would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Ben

    Hi,
I have posted a bugreport on this issue to Apple. Currently (10.7.2) it is not possible to run PPTP on any Mac OS X Server when using a 10.7 Server as Directory Server.
I have tried 'everything', but the MPPE encryption mechanism seems to be broken.
Edit: I see now that the bugreport is filed as a duplicate to an older case, which is now closed. I hope this means they have found the problem and will release a fix in the next update.

  • Screensaver is not working in OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
My screensaver is not working in OSX Yosemite on my macbook pro late 2008
Can't solve it by my self..

I had noticed I was having this issue too, and my screensaver never kicking in, and just going to sleep with it never kicking in.
I had gone in and checked to see if any of the settings had got changed or deleted in the system upgrade, but they were all still set at what I had them at prior... so, did as some attempted above also, and adjusted the times for it to kick in, and still nothing.  Worked when I would hit 'Preview', but still not kick in at the interval time.
What I just did to get it to work, was just to simply go into System Preferences>Desktop & Screensaver, and just reselected the folder of images that I want to be used, in my case, a folder of images in my iPhoto.  And it now works.
Apparently, it wasn't working, because, even though it was still selected to use that folder in iPhoto, something must have changed in the upgrades, which might of had something to to with the iPhoto update too, where it had to update my iPhoto library upon relaunch... and my screensaver settings were set to access that older directed to folder within Library, that was updated in the new release... and so, just repointing it to that folder now in iPhoto, got it to work.
At least, that is my figurin', and I'm stickin' to it!

  • Native iOS L2TP VPN not working on Lion Server

    Hi Folks,
I have a very strange issue concerning making VPN work on two iOS devices I have. I have recently setup Lion Server on a MacMini here in the office with L2TP VPN using a shared secrert phrase and a password authentication.
I have Lion running on an a MacBook Air (which I setup VPN using the provisioning profile "VPN.mobileprovision") and Snow Leopard running on an iMac. (VPN was set up manually). Both systems have been tested to work both inside and outsideof my internal network as I have tested with an air card.
I also have an iPhone running 4.3.4/4.3.5 that I setup by emailing the provisioning profile and and iPad 1 running iOS 5 beta 4 setup with the vpn provisioning profile. Neither the iPad nor iPhone seem to work at all either internally nor externally. In fact I never see any activity in the vpnd.log when I attempt to connect to with these devices. All I get is the standard "The L2TP-VPN server did not respond. Try reconnecting. ..."
Based on my success with the OSX Clients both inside and outside my local network I feel it is safe to say that I do not think the issue resides on the Lion Server nor the network/firewall configuration. I am running a Time Capsule with FW 7.5.2/7.4.2. There was no change in behavior with either version of the Time capsule firmware for the clients whether they were OSX or iOS. I must be clearly missing something here and I don't know what. Any help any of you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Issue is resolved. I used the initial random generated shared secret that was generated by Lion Server. The shared secret has special characters. IOS did not like the special characters. See iPhone Console Log below:

That is why I never saw any attempt to connect. The actual process would bomb out before attempting to make a connection to the server.
    The shared secret key was:
    Y|WNwvM_O"?gLA$F@adT
Looks like it was the " or the ? symbols.
Once I changed the shared secret key the issue went away and the iPhone and iPad could connect to vpn without issue.

  • Remote LAN Name Resolution on VPN not working after upgrading to iOS8

Has anyone come across the problem since upgrading to iOS8 where remote LAN name resolution does not work when connected to the remote LAN with VPN.  Everything worked fine on iOS7 and continues to work okay on devices that have not been upgraded.
If I'm connected with WiFi on the local network, I am able to resolve the FQDN to a local IP address.  The problem arises when I'm away from the office, on either LTE or another WiFi and I start a VPN connection to the office.  The VPN connects without any problems.  If I try to connect to a desktop with the FQDN it never connects.  I will work if I connect with the IP address.  If I try to do an nslookup of the FQDN, I don't get a response.  I am however able to get a response when performing an nslookup for google.com.
The VPN we are using is PPTP to a Windows network.

  • WRT600N WRT310N PPTP will not work in some cases

    Hello All,
This is more of a warning than a request for help. If you are using the WRT600N or the WRT310N and you need to use PPTP VPN connections, these are not the routers for you!
The PPTP support only work with MS PPTP Servers, it does not work with other VPN routers such as Nortel Contivity's and others.
Please read other threads in this forum, in most cases the wireless connectivity does not work properly, and the router is prone to freeze, requiring it to be hard booted often.

Just to update everyone... Firmware Version 1.01.36 Build 3 does not fix the PPTP issues with the WRT600N router.

Thanks for the reply Jkbull .
My issue was solved by using "Viscosity" a vpn client for Mac which even works with OSX Yosemite.
but i cannot find any solution for tunnelblick.
I am not sure but think the problem was with tun-tap settings or 443 port.
I have tried changing the reference to "pun-in.earthvpn.com" in the OpenVPN configuration file to its current IP address of "103.250.184.251".
I have an option in mac network settings to use one or more DNS Servers so i have added Google Public DNS and my college DNS server- "202.141.81.2".
I Cannot connect to Internet by not using proxy because our connections go through our proxy server "202.141.80.19:3128" and we have user-password login for this server to establish a internet connection.
    The Problem still persists.
    When i connect with viscosity,
Initially i use my college proxy settings.
Connect to EarthVpn by using Viscosity
It asks me with the username, password of the earthvpn account and when provided it establishes  connection.
I use no proxy(that is remove my proxy settings) after the connection is established.
Now it is connected to VPN.
I wish tunnelblick guys come up a solution for this problem.

  • OS X Server VPN not working

    Hi
I have had a problem when trying to set up the vpn service on os x server.  I use OS X Mountain Lion server.  The problem is that when I set up the vpn service in the server app, it won't let me connect to the vpn using my public ip address or outside my network.  It will work if I type in the IPV4 address of the server inside the network.  It just won't work outside the network.  I looked up the port number for OS X Server VPN and did the port-forwarding in the router.  Unless i have the port wrong (which is doubt),  why would this not be working.  I am using L2TP to connect to the server but I have also tried PPTP and that did not work either.  I think that the problem must be something with getting the vpn on the internet since it works perfectly fine inside the network.
    Thanks for any help.
    Michael

If you have a port-mirroring switch (I use a Netgear GS105E), it is very handy.
This is the typical configuration for a VPN. Let us assume L2TP.
VPN Client (L2TP) -> WAN Router/Firewall (Outside) -> LAN Port Forwarding (inside) -> VPN Server (LNS = OS X server).
You may not be able decrypt packets, but you can see outer headers. If the WAN Router/Gateway has port mirroring functions, you can watch incoming packets at the WAN Interface. The Router/Gateway should just forward packets to the designated Port/IP.
If the packets make it past the Router/Gateway,  the Server configuration should be checked. Temporarily, you can turn off the firewall and see if you can get to the OS X server. It will help in pinpointing where the issue might be. Shared secrets should also be checked.
If you are able to VPN from inside, it is a very strange configuration. Usually coming from inside to inside is not permitted.
If the clients and servers use the same intranet addresses, for example the client uses 192.168.x.x and the server is also on 192.168.x.x, you will run into issues. You may need to reserve address space for VPN clients.

It is pretty clear to me that even though I have forwarded the required ports for L2TP, that Mavericks and Server 3 break the L2TP VPN capabilites I was actively using in Mountain Lion.
I can connect locally, but when done from an external network via port forwarding, L2TP fails to connect.  Before you query me on port forwarding and router make and model, let me assure you, I have been successfully doing L2TP VPN with Mountain Lion and Server 2.x.x with no issue.  Pretty clear to me that Mavericks broke something.
Suggestions specific to the OS platform are appreciated!  (The network is in good working order.)

    Hello there as well,
I've the same issue and I investigate the problem. The reason why it does not work is, that the racoon (IKE Daemon) does not accept connections on port 4500 (IKE for NAT-T) if the source port is random generated.
Since Mavericks and IOS7 the source port from the client is no longer 4500, this lead to this problem (except you have a old VPN connection already setup bevor you update to IOS7 on your Phone).
If you are in the same network like your server, the IKE NAT-T is not used. In this case the regular port 500 (IKE) is used, and this works as expected. At the moment we have to wait if the problem is fixed by Apple.
There are two possibilities, they can adjust the clients or the server configuration. However if you want to use VPN with OS X native methods, use PPTP. This is not affected but of course it provides no Layer 2 Tunneling.
    Regards,
    Daniel
