Praise for the uncluttered UI

I really appreciate the effort to keep the UI uncluttered, concentrating on the useful features. It is very clean, and mostly very intuitive. The acrobat.com 'my place'
Tabs
Very clean and simple. Much better than the weird control that Word uses. (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=microsoft+word+tabs)
Lists
Again, very clean and simple. The list continuation feature just worked. Nice.
Export / Import
Saved to word format, just worked, with images and everything. Nice job.
Every now and then I need to create a PDF, but not that often. Pricing model does not fit my needs at all, especially since my copy of Word 2008 can do it.

Text wrapping is a really hard feature to get right, I really liked the options you gave me.
Browsing to flickr & google just worked, again very nice.

Praise for the nano

I just got my nano in the mail today, and I wanted to do something you rarely see on online discussion forums: praise it without complaint. Most of the time people post because they have a problem they need to figure out, or something irritated them and they want to vent. That's cool, that's what forums are for, to get things fixed. But sometimes you like a product so much you are motivated to say Thanks to the manufacturer.
I knew how small these things are supposed to be, and yet when I pulled it out of the box and held one for the first time in my hands I was still stunned. Every time I pick it up I am stunned anew. How on earth did Apple do this? Jonathan Ive, and the Apple design team, bravo!
Is my nano going to get scratched? You bet. Both of my previous iPods got scratched. It's the nature of them. But after seeing all the moaning about nanos getting scratched, I took a look today at my 3G iPod and wondered just how bad it was. This is an iPod I have used with no protection, just sticking in my jeans pocket on a daily basis. Is it scratched? I had no idea, so I took a close look. Sure enough, lots of little scratches on both the screen and the back. Go figure. I hadn't really paid attention before, and I won't again in the future. You don't notice it unless you look at it. So will I stick my nano in my jeans pocket? Yup. Will it get scratched? Yup. Will I care? A little, but not that much.
I love this nano. It works, exceeds my expectations in every way, and I just love it. Well done, Apple.

I certainly don't minimze the fact that scratches will occur, and with any iPod. And if it bothers you, I don't belittle that fact either. Each person will react differently. But I remember when the first iPod came out and people had similar complaints early on. It was so shiny and new that any flaw stood out. Wow, how shiny that back was! But oh, what a fingerprint magnet... And so it goes, iPod after iPod. The complaints about the nano are nothing new.
In fact, I think it's the early adopters who complain the most, perhaps because they are so into the technology they want to be first in line to buy these great devices. They love them! But that's why it bothers them when their beautiful gadget gets marred in any way.
Do I like the fact that my nano is in perfect condition right now? Sure. Same feeling as when I get brand new sneakers. They are shiny white and new. And until that first scuff mark appears, it feels new. Then that first mark appears and it hurts. But then you move on to a new level of appreciation, start to forget the scuff mark, and pretty soon it's just another workday shoe that you enjoy but don't look that closely at.
My 3G iPod is very scratched, but I stopped noticing. It was a tool, and it worked great, so I enjoyed it. I got to relax about it. Scratched? Fine, I'll stick it in my jeans and not worry about it any more. It's cool.
So I'm not saying people are wrong to complain. I just wanted there to be a reminder that this really is an astounding product, and it was worth saying Thank You to Apple.

I just had to share my Nokia 925 survival story!! Monday May 21st I discovered that I had washed my son's phone. It had gone through both the detergent and liquid fabric softener cycles. I stuck in a bowl of rice for 2 days holding out little hope for it. Rotating it every few hours while awake I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. Low and behold I plugged in in this afternoon and it works!! Thank you for making some of the most indestructible products on the market!!! Love my Windows Phone

Praises for the X300?

I have ordered a new X300, which I will pick up in a day thanks to CDW.
I would love to hear what other X300 owners think of this new ThinkPad, and any praises, suggestions, or cautions are greatly appreciated.

Let's clear some things up here. First, if your Vista X300 allowed you to create recovery CDs, you have a pre-GA system with a very early version of the preload. Therefore, your experiences are not going to be the norm. In the GA version, the Vista preload does not have the option to create rec CDs, so if that's the menu option you're referring to, it is gone. The menu option I refer to in previous posts is "Restore to Factory Contents" in the WinPE predesktop area (i.e. disk-to-disk recovery). Recovery CDs still work like a champ.
Your system would not have come with recovery CDs because it came with disk to disk recovery, a-la the early, pre-GA preload (not to mention that recovery CDs wouldn't have existed at that time). I received four additional X300 ThinkPads yesterday; one Vista preload, three XP preload, and I can assure you that while there were no recovery CDs with the XP systems (because they have disk-to-disk capability in the service partition), the Vista system did ship with a set of recovery CDs.

Praise for the new MacBook Pro 17"

I just replaced my first-gen MBP 17" with a unibody 2.93GHz version and I can't believe the difference. The screen is BEAUTIFUL. It is so bright and the colours are so rich. I'm just in awe everytime I use it. It feels lighter, the keyboard is much nicer, the trackpad is a time saver with all the new gestures, the 6-8 hour battery life... Just everything is perfect! Not only that, but I can play Unreal Tournament III in Vista at the highest details at close to 60 fps. That just blows me away.

Here's the dirty little secret about lithium batteries: Heat & frequent full discharge/recharge cycles are the two biggest killers of these batteries. Fact is, lithium batteries really don't like to be discharged below 40% of capacity very often. I'm typing this on a 4 1/2 year old MacBook Pro, and my battery is still going strong. It's fine to leave it plugged in all the time, that's what I do. Once every two-three months, I discharge it to about 40% & then recharge. So, charge yours till full, and try to never fully discharge the battery.

Any thoughts, cautions, and/or praises for buying a T 61?

As much as I had hoped to hold out for the next model, I am going to bite the bullet and go for a T 61.
Here is the configuaration:

The first thing I would do is buy a 2 GB stick of RAM and install it. 1 GB is not really sufficient for Vista. Well, nothing can really fix Vista, but 1 GB will make it worse. 3 GB would be even better.
The good news is you can buy the RAM and install it yourself MUCH cheaper than if you had ordered it with the machine - sorry, Lenovo.
The following is a good video on removing the RAM. It's for the T60 but it's exactly the same for the T61:

In Praise of the N97

Just for a change can i praise the N97 while I understand some users frustrations can I just add this is not every N97 user. I have owned many phones and gadgets over the years from N70,N80,N95 Iphones Archos and Ipods
and to be honest I think the N97 is the best yet
Things i'm loving most about the N97
1.The memory 32gb = lots of movies and music makling it a one gadget in your pocket
by the way if you use dvdvideosoft video to ipod convertor on the ipod highest quality setting it gives great video files supported by N97 and its freeware
2.the radio transmitter fab with the ipod and iphone this you have to pay extra for
3.the internet access is great
4.iplayer with download
only bug on this is sometimes the download option isnt there
but ive found if you restart the phone the next time it is
5.camera is good as it was on the N95 its down to the lens not the MP
6.widget options are good
My wishlist for the N97
1.coverflow or something like it for the music player
2.N gage games I believe this is happening in september
3.The picture gallery to be fixed as for some reason the download picture
file only updates when phone restarted and for some reason you cant delete from this file via the phone
only from mass storage
overall though am a very happy N97 user like all technology sometimes you have to learn to work withthe nuances and behaviours of a device compared to my early experiences with a spv its a breeze

Me too, me too!! And so you don't think I'm a teenage geek jumping up and down in excitement, I'm a geek in her 50s jumping up and down with excitement.
I've just been having coffee with a friend who was given an iPhone by his employer as a work phone. He doesn't like it much at all. One of the problems he finds is the mute button is often activated by his ear – I thought that was amusing! On the other hand, my daughter and her husband like their iPhones – but they also have a house full of Apple computers!
I love my N97 – I did a lot of research and weighed up three phones – the HTC Touch Pro 2 (I know someone who has got rid of his already and swapped to the N97), waiting for the Samsung Omnia i8000 or the N97. While the iPhone is perfect for many, many people it was never an option for me. Capacitive screen too restrictive, no multi-tasking, no FM radio, low grade camera, no flash, no personalisation to speak of. Above all else a phone has to fit the needs of the user and I was very clear on my needs.
I've not had mine for 2 weeks or anything, but I love it. The keyboard is perfect for a mobile phone (we use phone keyboards differently to PC keyboards), the touch screen is extremely accurate, it feels good to hold (as in comfortable), was dead easy to upgrade and personalise, and I've had no bugs. Call quality is excellent, my daughter's description was "just like a landline, maybe even better". The speakers (for music) are not 7.1 digital sourround sound, but this isn't a stereo system, it is a phone - and the quality can be improved by fiddling with the equaliser.
Now I just need to send Nokia my invoice for the advertising spiel, but I am really happy with it.
I've had a few Nokias, so I suppose I am used to the Nokia world, therefore easier for me to adapt.
Thinks I'd like to see: Fancier transitions, but I'm hopeful we will get the upgrade to Symbian 2 which looks great - a litle worried about the RAM required for Sym 2, but we shall see - they say we are compatible.
More useful apps - but that will come in time as developers get stuff happening.
A few odds and ends, mostly usability that I posted on the thread about the next release of firmware - some I've already found apps for, like auto-scheduling the profile changes. I'd like to see the virtual qwerty keyboard as was in early videos - handy for a quick SMS. Abiliy to edit contact detail labels (not sure where that disappeared to, was on my old phone).
Like fowler1969, I'm very happy I went with this phone.
I will say this: I have noticed quite a few posts here and in other forums where the "issues" were not phone issues, they were user issues. This is not a phone for someone who isn't a little technically literate. The phone can be highly personalised, therefore the user needs to know at least a little about the basic concepts of smartphones and computer technology generally. If a person doesn't know the difference between the C: drive and the E: drive, or understand that an internet connection is needed to get email, then possibly this is not the right phone. Don't buy this phone because you want the lastest and fanciest - but it because it fits YOUR particular needs.
Clearly some people have had some issues, but I do believe these are the exception rather than the rule.
I agree Nokia didn't test the firmware it was shipped with well enough before release.

AAT Apple Advanced Typography for the writing systems of world scripts

Dropping an SFNT and an input method into the operating system adds the shaping for the writing system. And according to the Apple Unicode Liason, as of OS X 10.4 the optional Apple MORX tables for complex composition and the optional Microsoft GSUB tables for complex composition may peacefully cohabit in the selfsame SFNT Spline Font file (leaving aside the issue of whether this is sound advice, or whether sound advice should say that an SFNT should contain either TrueType or Type 1, either MORX or GSUB - not both in either case).

Please pardon any speedwriting in the following - it's off the cuff :
From the little I understand about the technical details of the differences between AAT and OpenType, I'd guess AAT to be the superior system, from the user's (or font designer's) point of view.
The issue is the business model. Apple TrueType 2 and Apple ColorSync 2 were developed to provide very, very, very highend character:glyph transforms and colour:colourant transforms in an application-independent manner.
The application model was Java and OpenDoc and while OpenDoc is defunct, as is Taligent, Java within which AAT is embedded is alive and kicking. In the application model the idea was that the small developer did not have to independently do elements outside the scope of the application.
Similarly, a graphics library was available to avoid the problem that PostScript is inherently unreliable as it is a programming model that can be used to extend the PostScript graphics model, causing PostScript programs to crash at critical times.
Software publishers in the nineteen-nineties published software for the standalone personal computer with its suite of standalone software. And the standalone software had its own Application Programming Interface that locked XTensions, Plug-ins and more into one and only one suite.
Adobe did NOT want QuickDraw GX and Adobe still has a 'white' paper in which the company states that the idea of the SFNT Spline Font file format as an application-independent product that takes over large parts of line layout is objectionable.
The pendulum does not stand still, however. In the 1970s there were terminals for time-shared centralised computing. In the 1980s and 1990s there were decentralised 'personal' computers in local area networks with their own storage and with graphic displays and printers.
The growth of instructure, both in terms of distributed networking and in terms of an international character set, permits a blend of time-shared computing and 'personal' graphics computing which was intended e.g. with the Apple MessagePad and with Java (Amelio married the ideas).
Apple bled external and internal developers with the late lamented GX and the application model was ten years ahead of its time. Modern imaging models are founded on the ideas implemented in GX and absolutely NOT on the ideas implemented in PostScript and PDF.
Jonathan Seybold told Apple to do an application for pagination, since an application for pagination is the sine qua non for a composition model, a separation model, and a document model (the Apple Portable Digital Document model).
Apple did not do that as it would have caused increased commercial conflict with Adobe, Quark and Macromedia at a time when hardcopy production was still the high end of the Apple product portfolio, and so while ColorSync survived TrueType as prosumer and pro solution suffered.
Ironically, XTT's developer did manage at one time to make his primary Tibetan font usable in both Mac and Windows environments -- by somehow combining AAT and OpenType elements within it -- but his considerable effort was then torpedoed, I gather, by some (unannounced, as usual) changes Apple made in font implementation in 10.4.
Deborah Goldsmith gave bad advice on the Unicode mailing list, I'm sorry but it was not sound technically. Dov Isaacs, Adobe's technical quality manager, gave sound advice in saying that Type 1 splines and TrueType splines should not be housed in the selfsame SFNT Spline Font file. I read what the Xenotype developer posted, and Apple bungled as Apple has bungled other important things like supporting a decent international default separation for ColorSync. There is no excuse whatsoever - if Apple cannot use Apple software with Apple defaults to do a decent job then Apple needs to find out whether it is working for Apple customers or is working for itself.
I don't know what might be necessary to make it possible for Mac users to employ OpenType fonts for complex scripts, but I can't believe that this goal is simply beyond the capabilities of Apple's engineers. Nor do I understand why Apple seems to keep, well, stalling on this issue.
The answer lies in the document model, not in the internationalisation model or in the SFNT imaging model. I am not an expert on Indic scripts (I don't speak or write any of them), but as I understand the matter Indic calligraphic scripts are simulated typographically using a feature called insertion that splits one character code into two glyph codes for vowels.
This type of typographic simulation does not pose problems if you are authoring with the aim of archiving and accessing hardcopy, since your audience is not interacting with the character string, but if you are authoring, archiving, and accessing softcopy then simulation methods such as insertion and bidirectionality may pose problems.
Specifically, if in the process of producing your softcopy pagination you loose the source character stream and the mapping of said character stream to the reshaped and reordered glyph stream, then you have to try to synthesise the character stream. And the more complex the reshaping and reordering, the less likely you are to get a successful simulation.
This is the issue between Adobe PDF produced from PostScript and Microsoft XPS which retains as well the source character stream as the mapping of the character stream to the glyph stream. Adobe PDF, by contrast, is basically a viewable graphic of the glyph stream - Adobe PDF does not even retain semantics for reshaping of formal Danish typography.

Portable amplifier for the ipad?

Hi all
I only had my ipad for couple of days and liked it so far. However, I'm disappointed with the sound quality of the ipad, the sound does not feel as alive and natural as my old itouch and the sound of different instruments seems be squished together. I also get white noise when turn the volume up to full.
I know the problems is due to ipad as the music is encoded in apple lossless format using the original CDs and I'm also using Sennheiser IE8 headphone with many hundreds of hrs of burn in.
There is also quite a difference when using the same headphones to play the same format of songs on my macbook. So I can only conclude that the DAC chip in the ipad is not as good quality as it should have been for the price.
Anyway, can anyone please recommend to me a portable amplifier for the ipad. My budget is about £200, and if possible I'd like to be able to use it with my macbook as well.
Also I would like to try it out before buying, so can anybody suggest any audio shops with a good selections of portable amps in London that can be easily reached using the tube.

Hi, just an update on the ipad sound quality to clear the air for any partial buyers reading this thread.
I now had my new gears for 3 days and have used them to test the ipad music quality extensively over the weekend.
1st up is my new portable Nuforce Icon mobile (DAC/amp) and 1 year old Sennheiser IE8 connected to the ipad using line out cable.
The Nuforce Icon mobile is retailed at $99, and for that price I’ve no higher praise as it almost make the music life like to listen, there is also no more annoying white noise in the background when turning up the volume either.
The amp does make music sound a bit bass heavy, but I think that’s the fault of the IE8 and not the amp, as the IE8 is bass heavy to begin with.
I also used it with the macbook through a USB port, again the mini makes a noticeable difference with sound quality using IE8 to play apple lossless music.
If you already have a decent pair of aftermarket headphone or if you spend lots of time listen to music on your laptop. Than I’d highly recommend the Nuforce icon mini as it’s a great piece of equipment to improve the music quality without burning a big hole in your pocket.
If you are interested, there are many reviews of the Nuforce Icon mini on the head-fi.org site, much better than any I can write.
I also did some blind tests between apple lossless and ACC 320kbps encoding on the ipad using my new Sennheiser HD800 and Graham Slee Solo SRG II headphone amp.
Even with both the headphone and amp not yet burned in, I can hear no difference between the 2 encodings using ipad onboard DAC and line out cable.
So I replace the lossless music on the ipad with the AAC 320kps version and gained 2/3 of hard drive space.
I’ve to say the DAC in the ipad is quite good, as there are not much details lost when compared to my Creative Lab soundcard in my PC.
So I was wrong to assume the ipad DAC was causing the poor sound quality. I think there is a problem with my 3.5mm headphone jack. I’ve connected both my headphones and amps to it, and there is always some white background noise at different volume setting.

I-phone finally announced for the UK

Which? has put up the following on its website:
Apple announced the UK launch details of its long-awaited iPhone today.
The 8GB device will hit stores on November 9, priced at £269.
It will run on the O2 mobile phone network, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs told a press conference in London today.
After the £269 upfront cost, customers will sign an 18-month contract with O2 on a tariff of either £35, £45 or £55 per month.
Apple has sold more than one million iPhones in the US since its launch there on June 29.
The device combines a touch-sensitive mobile phone handset with a built-in iPod media player and a wireless internet browser.
Mr Jobs said: ‘It is a breakthrough phone. It is a very powerful phone and it is super easy to use. It is the best iPod we have ever made.’

The iPhone will be sold at some 1,300 O2, Apple and Carphone Warehouse stores. Customers who switch to the O2 network to get the device will be able to keep their previous phone numbers, O2 said.
The iPhone's internet browser function will be compatible with 7,500 Wi-Fi hot spots across the UK plus other areas where the internet can be accessed wirelessly. Customers will get access to unlimited internet downloads as part of their monthly O2 tariff.
Asked why the device was more expensive in the UK, Mr Jobs said: ‘The majority is, of course, the VAT. The US price doesn't include any sales tax and the UK price does. That is the majority of the difference.
‘Then there is a little bit more because it is more expensive to do business here.’
Apple would not confirm how long its contract with O2 would remain exclusive.
Mr Jobs said Apple wanted to sell 10 million iPhones globally during 2008.
Securing the iPhone deal is a major coup for O2, which is owned by Spanish firm Telefonica, and is likely to tempt customers across from rival mobile phone companies.
Tariff
The £35 tariff includes up to 200 minutes and 200 SMS text messages per month. This rises to 600 minutes and 500 texts for the £45 tariff and 1,200 minutes and 500 texts for the £55 tariff.
The iPhone's sleek design and touch-sensitive screen have attracted praise from reviewers. But some users criticised Apple's decision to run the internet browser function over the 2G network instead of 3G, which is quicker.
But Mr Jobs said running the iPhone on 3G would make its battery life too short. Instead, the device will go online using a built-in wi-fi browser where possible to speed up connection times.

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.

How long does it take for the warehouse to show a phone as recieved so I can pay my final bill? I would like to sign up for Verizon again as I am very unsatisfied with my new company but cannot until this is resolved.

I recently switched to another competitor but would actually like to start from scratch with Verizon but cannot do so because they cannot locate my devices I mailed in to their warehouse. I switched my whole family's accounts, 3 phones and 1 mobile hotspot, to a competitor to get a cheaper rate and unlimited data but I have not been happy with their service and would like to switch back. The problem is when switching the first time I was told by a Verizon chat rep that I could send my Edge devices back in and would get credit for them and stop my edge payments which was not the way I know now it is supposed to work. After a couple of phone calls a supervisor looked at my online chat transcript and realized that I was correct and the rep had told me incorrectly that they would take my edge phones back and give me credit for them and I could close my account by only paying the early termination fees. She sent me two envelopes to send my two edge phones back in and said they would credit on my account and stop the monthly billing for them once they were received. I called a couple of weeks ago after being charged 24.99 for the both of them again for the month after my account was stopped. They said that they had not received my phones and I should have noted the tracking number from the labels the rep sent me so they could track them. I tried to find the tracking numbers but couldn't so I got back on live chat and asked them to resend me the letter from the supervisor rep as well as resending the labels and he said they could that and it should be 7-10 business days. It has now been over two weeks and I have not received the resent letter or labels so I cannot give them the tracking number to prove I sent my phones back to them. I have also researched the facility I was asked to send these phones back to and it seems this is a pretty common Verizon trick of making you prove you sent the phones and not giving you any access to the tracking numbers. I just want to pay my ETF's and close out my original account so I can start over fresh with Verizon but now I am losing faith in doing that as this is making me wonder if they are the type of company I want to deal with. Please someone who may have dealt with this help me restore my faith in Verizon and give me an idea of what to do next.

How recently did you switch? If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account. The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices. I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down. You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.
