PRAM Errors

I have been getting some kind of error when I try to start my Power Book Up. Recently as in the last couple of days, Once I get it started I can run it all day long no problems. After shutting it down for the night and then re-starting it the following day, it won't boot up. I must re-set the PRAM every time and then it will boot normally.
I am not even sure where to start looking for the problem. While I am not new to computers in general. I am new to the MAC. I quit using windoz a year or so ago and started to use linux on a daily basis. After receiving this Power Book as a job bonus and starting to use it daily as well. I want to learn a lot more about it and MAC OS X. I may be having problems with operator ignorance in this case.
I keep several items connected to the Power Book for daily use.
20" Apple Cinema Display set to mirror mode
Connected to my Linux Server via Gigabit switch over ethernet.
I was having problems getting my Power Book to see my Linux print server via CUPS and conldn't understnd the ADD PRINTER application. So I opened a terminal and edited the cups-client.conf, using sudo, to configure the cups-server-name. As son as I was done the printer poped right up and I can print to it. This may be causing a problem but I can't see how.
I would really like to resolve this booting problem.
TIA

It surely sounds a bit odd. If this were a desktop model I'd think it could be an internal backup battery problem, but since you're using a laptop that's ruled out. I'm inclined to think flakey RAM. If you installed third-party RAM in the computer you could try temporarily removing it to see what happens. If the problem persists, then swap it with the other module and re-test.
Another thing you could try, but I doubt it's going to work, is to open the Startup Disk pref pane, re-select the startup volume, then click the Restart button.
Other possible things to try, though I'm not sure if they will work: Reset Open Firmware: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42642 and reset the PMU.

  • HD saying Empty, USB drives saying Empty?

    Greeintgs whizz kids,
I seem to have a problem that is really annoying me!
No matter what drives i try to use ( flash, external or the computers HD ) my mac is not reading their storage capacity and i am unable to copy files to and from my computer.
When I right click on my desktop hard drive. then click get info, it says i have no storage space on my HD, under the general tab, it comes up with :X for capacity and X: for available, and used it says 0kb. So i cant drag an item from a flash drive to my desktop. A message comes up saying ' there is not enough space' ? Over the weekend my USB flash drives ( 3 of them ) are now doing the same. I put one in a usb slot, It comes up on the desktop, I then right click over the usb icon and click get info.
again it comes up with X: for capacity and X: for available space on the drive!!? So i cant copy from My desktop to my Flash drive either!
When i look at the drives in Disk Utility... both the HD drive and all the USB drives show their ACTUAL value used and free.... and they appear to be fine! and have Huge amounts of space available.
Is there an easy way to fix this? All drives HD and flash are in the right format!
Could this be a PRAM error as when I start up my computer asks me to rest my time and date?
Im a new user to MAC and I really appreciate anybodys help on this matter!
    Thanks heaps!

Did you try Validate Disk with Disk Utility?
In the Get Info window is it Locked? Does it say you have both Read & Write permissions?

My bad Eric. The startup preference recognizes the primary as a 10.8.3 startup volume but when u select it the system does not boot. I can only boot from my external backup drive

  • A FIX for error message: When I try to open Snood (it's a game) I get this message.  Not enough memory {Error # :: 0, in sound.cp@line 101  Can you help?

After years of playing Snood, w/o problems, I started getting this error message, on my iMac, OS 10.5.8,
with 4 GB of memory when opening Snood:  Not enough memory {Error # :: 0, in sound.cp@line 101
My MacBook Pro w. Mac OS 10.6.8 did not have this problem.
Initially I thought that Snood raised its minimum requirement to Mac OS 10.6.
I had several correspondences with Snood. Their tech support is great. Quick and thorough responses.
They thought the issue was in Mac's system preferences/ Sound. It was.
I didn't realize that my sound input and output devices were gone.
The fix was resetting the PRAM. I found this advice on MacFixIt.com.

  • Error 13 = Blue Screen of Death?

Thought I'd try this board and see if anyone knows anything about 'error 13' and Panther.
I have been plagued by this error message which pops up whenever I try to print from either of my printers or burn a CD. This all happened after I tried to load a demo version of Adobe Illustrator CS2.
Over the last day I have tried the following:
    * deleted the apple.com.print preferences
    * reset the PRAM
    * unplugged, unpowered and restarted the printers and their USB connections
    * deleted the printers from the print setup utility and tried to reinstall them (but there too I get the 'error 13' message. Printers won't load but they do show up as if they loaded. Just won't work, that's all.
    * tried logging in as a new user, and then the printer message is "Not enough RAM" to print.
    * repaired the disk permissions from the CD
Generally I've done everything I can think of... except to reload the OS, which I hesitate to do because I have to first load Jaguar, then the Panther update, then the other updates. Last time I tried that things didn't quite work out.
I do have an external backup drive, which also got corrupted as I tried loading the Adobe Illustrator CS2 on that disk too. Dumb I know...
So... anyone know what 'error 13' means?
Is 'error 13' the Mac equivalent of the Windows Blue Screen of Death?
    Thanks for any input...

    Hello Pawel,
I have looked over the service request you mentioned about acquiring 2 PCIe-6537 at 20MHz sampling rate on all 32 lines. In order to narrow down this issue, I think it would be best to try only acquire from both cards without doing any triggerring etc. Also when performing this test, I would only want to acquire from 8 channels on both cards to see if this reproduces it. If this works, we can slowly add more elements to narrow down what the issue is and make us more effective to solve the problem.
I also wanted to ask if you have tried this setup on another machine and if it worked.
Along with this, have you tried to create two Digital Tasks in MAX and try to acquire for the same amount of time to see if the issue reoccurs here? This would tell us if this problem is connected to the driver/computer or LabVIEW.

  • Error 8062 when I try to copy or move files on my macbook: "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8062)". Can even not install new software now!!

Since a few days when I try to copy or move files on my macbook, I often get an error message saying "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -8062)". And then it just quits the copy or move.
I searched a lot on the internet, but only found solutions for cases you cannot empty the trash due to this issue.
I tried those solutions for my trash and that helped after some trying.
However, I still have the problem with copying and moving files.
I even cannot install new software now, as it has to copy itself to the programs-directory, and gives the same error-message.
    Who can help me??
Cannot seem to find any info on it on the support-forums or elsewhere.
    My user-account is administrator, I use a 13" Macbook Aluminium (Late 2008). Mac OS X 10.6.8 CPU 2Ghz Intel Core Duo, RAM: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Tips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
    - make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
    - do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
    - perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
    - make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
    - after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.
    (will post progress)

I have an olde iMac that once I have an older iMAC that once burned CD's with no issues. Now I get an error message saying "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed". I have never had it touched so the device was not removed. Please advise as to what could be the problem. How to fix. Thanks

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM first, if that doesn't help try a cleaning disc.....and then buy an inexpensive external burner. Slimline super drive failures are all too common.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Type 10 error when starting adobe illustrator

    Hi all,
Recently when I started adobe illustrator ver 10, i receive a time bomb and it gives me an error type10. I tried increasing the memory and also did a PRAM but the problem still persist.
Have anyone encounter this before, would appreciate if someone could help. By the way, when i started the photoshop apps. there is no problem. i am not sure if this is a illustartor error or should i look for updates, as it was working before this.
    Thanks for all the help.

I also have had a difficult time with Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 crashing upon launch.  The support staff was great even though we had to work through several sessions.  Below is the email explaining our final session.
This email is in regards with the issue you had been facing with Illustrator CC 2014.
While going through the installer logs, we found that there was an issue with the installation & the program installer had been denied access to several critical files & folders during installation.
This was the main reason for Illustrator crash as several critical components had not been installed properly.
We tried installing the program in a new user account & that worked.
Though the program has been installed properly now & is working in your old account, I will still strongly recommend you to get your computer user account repaired with a Windows 7 operating system diskette.
This is required so that you do not run into more trouble later while working with the Adobe Applications or even while installing other programs.
Avanish Divya was the final support person that successfully resolved my problems.

  • Error on OS 10.4.6 update : peflight script problem

Hi there folks. i posted in the G5 Display forum a problem i had with my computer hanging during startup (the grey screen with the apple logo) after a powersurge/cut last week. i was running 10.4.11 and i tried every diagnostic, but to no avail.
i managed to boot up in Target Mode and save the data, and did a reinstall.
i can reinstall 10.4.3 and then manually update to 10.4.4 and then 10.4.5 with no problem. but i keep getting this error message with any of the later updates:
*failed: The following install step failed: run preflight script for Mac OS X Update Combined (PowerPC)*
when i check the crashlog it says:
    *[477]: dyld: +Symbol not found: Perl_atforkunlock+*
    *preflight[477]: Referenced from: /usr/bin/perl*
    *preflight[477]: Expected in: /System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/libperl.dylib*
i can't figure out what has happened, but i've been reinstalling various versions of the OS now for days, and at one stage the computer kept booting into Darwin and all the Terminal command line gobbledygook kept popping up, which is utterly meaningless to me.
i can't figure out what to do, other than splash out on Leopard (which i am loathe to do!) and see if that works, but there's no guarantee it will.
anyone have this problem before or is tech-saavy enough to understand the meaning of the *+Symbol not found: Perl_atforkunlock+* message?
    many thanks in advance...

Hi daddypaycheck. yeah, i completely wiped the drive a number of times (i guess i must have attempted about 12 installs!) and also did the whole repair permissions and various other diagnostic stuff, but to no avail.
so i went out and bought Leopard and did a complete full-on clean install...
with absolutely no luck. it bombed on me with 1 minute left to go, and every other attempt failed at the very start.
so, i went back to 10.4.3 and chanced my arm again with the combo update to 10.4.11, and lo and behold, but the damned thing worked!
EXCEPT for the fact that there are no folder icons on display in any view and barely any of my apple apps open (mail, ichat, safari and none of my iLife apps - except Garageband) etc, etc...
also, the vertical scrollbar is missing from all windows, including iTunes, whenever that decides to open...
i'm really, really annoyed with the whole thing now. i can't seem to find any info online. lots of similar, but-not-quite-the-same issues, regarding zapping PRAM, removing RAM, checking Graphiocs cards etc etc, but i have already tried all of these and there's no change.
if it does work perfectly as 10.4.3, then surely it stands to reason there can't be any problem with displaying 10.4.11?
and, in case anyone mentions to just stick with 10.4.3 if it works - my iTunes library seems to require 10.4.9 or later... sigh...
thanks for the input though dpc!

  • Why is my adobe photoshop elements 12 not working. it says initializing and then it says there is an error and closes itself

why is my adobe photoshop elements 12 not working. it says initializing then error and shuts itself down.

    Three things you can try:
    1. Clean the superdrive with a proprietory CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.
    2. Perform an SMC reset:
Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) on Intel-based Macs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964  and

If you are using a Wireless Keyboard:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3273
    3. Try the free DVD player VLC:

  • When opening a file in Photoshop CC I get 'Could not complete your request because of a program error.'

I can see this is a generic error message('Could not complete your request because of a program error.') and I have done my best to read through many of the responses.
It occurs on the second, third, or sometimes fourth file that I try to 'Open', however I can still use the 'Open With' command through Finder.
I have tried resetting the preferences as per Julieanne Kost's recommendations, I have reinstalled Photoshop CC 2014, Generator isn't turned on, I don't have any Third-Party plug-ins loaded, I have tried running it in Safe mode, and I have reset my iMac's PRAM.
    Photoshop doesn't appear to be writing a PSErrorLog.txt file?   (~/Library/Preferences/Photoshop CC Settings/PSErrorLog.txt)
I haven't had any other issues.
I am running Photoshop on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.
    Please can you help me?

Does anyone have any other ideas as this is very frustrating.

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Computer clock resets to 1969. PRAM battery probably not the issue.

I have a PowerMac G4 mirrored doors computer running Tiger 10.4.11 that occasionally starts up with that error message saying: "Your computer's clock is set to a date before March 24th, 2001. This may cause some applications to behave erratically."
I know all about resetting the PRAM, resetting the NVRAM, and replacing a weak, or expired battery. I've read the relevant posts on the subject, in which well-intentioned guides say that the problem is "usually" or "generally" related to the PRAM battery. Well, I wish it could be that simple, because I have already had a new battery installed, and the problem continues. It is intermittent; it's been occurring for about six months now; and it persists.
I seek technical assistance and successful, problem-solving suggestions that go beyond merely suggesting that I zap the PRAM or replace the battery.
If there are potential SOFTWARE problems, please direct me to those potentially damaged files. None of the disk utilities that I have used—including Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro, OnyX, Cocktail, or Drive Genius— find anything wrong with my hard drive or the files on it. No corrupted resources are reported. Additionally, Intego's Virus Barrier finds no infected files either.
However, a FileBuddy search of files modified before 3/25/2001 finds several dozen files with improbable dates of 12/31/1969 or 1/1/1970. Fewer files dated 12/31/1969 occur after I go to the Date/Time preferences pane and reset the clock to the current date/time and then restart my computer, especially in regards to system-related files. Nonetheless, several dozen files with a 12/31/1969 still remain, even after the date/time reset and the system restart.
I do not know if any of those pre-historic files are playing a role in this chronic problem, so I offer that information for the technically more astute to ponder upon and factor in to any solutions which might be offered. I have read posts where someone might suggest a re-install of Tiger, but the original poster almost always reports that re-installing Tiger did not eliminate problem, so I would prefer suggestions that rely on a scalpel rather than a sledge hammer.
If someone suspects that there may be hardware problem, I would like to hear theories along that line, too, although I am unlikely to consider gutting the hardware items just to retain the attractive computer case. Even though I do have other computers (an iMac G5 and a MacBook Pro), the PowerMac G4 is my preferred workhorse, and it is the only one configured to run Final Cut Pro (version 4.5; I can't afford to upgrade now), so I want to keep it functional without a major investment into an older machine.
When the computer clock problem first reared its irritating head several months ago, it was accompanied with kernel crashes that turned out to be related to the nVidia video card. I brought the machine in to a local shop, because it was refusing to power on. They installed a new battery to replace the original, probably weak original battery, and they replaced the probably defective nVidia video card with a used nVidia card I found on eBay. The shop also claimed that I needed to replace the motherboard and the power supply to ensure that the G4 would power on and that it would present a desktop without the warning message about the computer clock being set to 12/31/1969.
I decided to reject their assessment, since the whole repair job would have amounted to about $1,100. It seemed like an excessive solution. Since taking the G4 back about three months ago with only the new battery and the replacement video card installed, the computer has powered on every single time without fail, which, to my non-technician mind, would appear to indicate that the power supply is OK. However, I do still get an occasional warning about the computer clock being set to a date before March 24th, 2001.
I do not have the technical expertise or repair knowledge to know if the problem is hardware-related, software-related, power supply-related, or a complex interaction between all of them. If someone can suggest a permanent fix to eliminate the computer clock error problem WITHOUT requiring me to make a major investment in repairing or replacing hardware components, that would be ideal. On the other hand, if this clock problem is merely is an irritant, but not a sign of something more serious or expensive, then I am willing to live with it and get around the problem by going through the steps of resetting the clock when required and then restarting the computer with a correctly set clock.
My main goal, of course, is to have a reliable, stable computer. If it costs too much to eliminate the computer clock irritation on a permanent basis, then I am willing to live with the problem, as long as its presence does not disrupt my work flow. In that case, I would appreciate it if someone could explain what might be going on, so that I know what to expect and what to do about it.
I hope this is sufficient information with which to make a diagnosis and recommendation. If not, ask for more. Thanks.

    Short answer =
    5) Upon reboot after re-connection and re-start, the Date & Time shows...
    a) in the Date & Time pane: 12/31/1969 at 7:00 PM, and counting
    b) in the Finder's menu bar: 7:00 PM, and counting
What do the results of this test tell you? Is this a software or a hardware problem?
    ======================================================================
    Long answer =
Thanks, BDAqua, for offering your help. I'm not exactly new to these forums, but somehow my previous contributions have all been wiped out, so I've restarted under a new account name.
I've had my G4 MDD for five years, and it's always been quite stable for me, so I'm not quite sure that this model is "cantankerous." I do find the computer clock error message irritating, though, so it would be nice to know the source of the problem and its permanent solution.
Since my original posting, I elected not to Shut Down the G4 to see what would happen. It functioned just fine since then, allowing me to create some short Final Cut Pro movies as Christmas presents to family members. With one exception, all other applications also functioned without problems. The only problem I'm encountering has to do with H-P Photosmart Studio, an application bundled with the HP All-in-one model C7280. It will not settle down to work, forcing me to Force Quit it every time. Since that app works fine on my iMac G5, I decided to trouble-shoot it by reinstalling the HP software, a process that requires me to Shut Down. (If possible, I want to see if the problem is with the HP software, or with Tiger on my G4.)
However, before I can get even get to trouble-shooting the HP Photosmart, the G4 gives me that computer clock error upon re-boot. In the past, the Date & Time error message has appeared upon a cold reboot, no matter whether I had reset the Date & Time in the preference pane via the Network clock or manually. However, I never conducted my tests in conjunction with disconnecting the A/C power cable. So, I decided to try the the test you suggested. Here are my observations and the results of the test.
    1) Upon Shut Down, cool down, and restart, I get the computer clock error message mentioned at the beginning of my original post, telling me that my clock is set to a earlier date.
    2) When I open the Date & Time preferences pane, however, the date and time shown there (as well as on the Finder's menu bar) is current.
    3) The Network setting was ON, so, to comply with this test, I unchecked the "Set date & time automatically" box. I do not need to reset date and time manually, because, as I mentioned they ARE set correctly, even though the message I got upon restart said that they are not. (If memory serves me correctly, though, the Date & Time panel would actually show 12/31/69 as the computer clock's read-out, so this discrepancy is somehow connected to this problem. )
    4) I shut down the G4 for 2 hours, and I disconnected all cables and plugs to it, including A/C power.
    5) Upon reboot after re-connection and re-start, the Date & Time shows...
    a) in the Date & Time pane: 12/31/1969 at 7:00 PM, and counting
    b) in the Finder's menu bar: 7:00 PM, and counting.
    6) I take screen captures of the error message and the menu bar: both .PNG files are time-stamped as of 12/31/1969 at around 7:01 PM.
    7) I will now reset the clock to the current Date and Time by turning the Network time feature back on, so I can get on with my work while the trouble-shooting process continues.
What do the results of this test tell you? Is this a software or a hardware problem?
If it's a software problem, then should I do I clean install of Tiger? If I do that, is there any evidence that a clean install will do any good to eradicate the problem?
On the other hand, if this is a hardware issue, is it contained to merely being an irritant that I can fix merely by adjusting the Date & Time whenever the problem occurs (which I can live with, as long as the system is stable after that fix), or is this error message regarding a sign of something more ominous failing on the motherboard?

i have a 2.2GHZ intel core duo 2007 MBP, which once ran Tiger and is now running 10.6.3
I had the NVDIA graphic card break down associated with such models, and it was replaced thanks to the extended care plan, here in Paris, so the logicboard is new- I also got a (technician installed) new HDD, and snowleopard
I originally had the 2 1Gig ram, but 1st got an extra 2Gb of danelec ram, and finally another 2GB- it ran fine for a couple year or so-
then, a few months back I recently started getting kernel panics, on tiger- I fist thought they were HDD related, got a new drive installed by a technician, switched to snow leopard-
yet they continue, and they're apparently RAM related, yet what is odd is that they can be reproduced with any RAM combination involving 2 sticks- the original apple 1Gb + any of the two GB ram sticks, the 2GB ram sticks together in any slot-- it's all the same, the screen goes grey and i'm told to shut down the computer
with one ram stick it works, this avoids the issue- but not always
i've moved the ram around, checked the slots, reset the PRAM,yet the issue is still there.
now i know that I should be using paired ram, and will do so in the next coming months when I can afford it- yet what has happened to make the make the MBP seemingly refuse two sticks of RAM when it didn't before ? are the two sticks dead ? or is there an issue with the slot ?
I'd also need to know that this is not a logicboard issue if it's possible- the logic board was changed due to the NVDIA bug, so it's a year old or so-
I'm running it on the 2GB danelec as I type, no issue, the samsung ram works as well, and so does the 1GB apple ram, in any slot, yet two slots of ram causes the kernel panic crash- the area near the ram slot also seems to get very hot-
I ran the hardware test yesterday, booting from the tiger dvd, which was difficult (possible drive issue)
finally managed to boot into hardware test mode (must be a superdrive issue)
running an extended test with the 4GB of ram in there
first pass found an error :
    4MEM/9/40 000 000 : bc13950
    running the extended testing
    extended testing (1h39 min)
    no errors found
    ran another quick test
    error
    4MEM/9/40 000 000 : 6b506C4
    another quick test :
    no trouble found
    another : no trouble found
and a last pass : no trouble found
but i did have two errors...
looking the errors up online didn't give anything so far, any clue as to what might be wrong here ? the RAM used to work fine (i've been using these two sticks for over two years), the kernel panics started happening on tiger- got a new HD drive a month ago, installed snow leopard, - used disk warrior and disk utilities, reset the PRAM and did the other tests and it continues- wether i'm running the computer from the internal drive or an external firewire drive-
running the hardware test, i also got two error messages, but on some passes only
if i look into the RAM status through about this mac, it says it's ok - what's odd is that the hardware test found errors, but not systematically----- I'd really like to know what the error message mean, can anyone help ?
i'm getting more and more kernel panics, unfortunately i live in France, so things are slightly less simple than they would be in other places customer servicewise- ie it might not be as simple as showing up at the new apple stores with this 2007 machine--
I need a stable machine to work on and really can't afford repairs at the moment
i'm really stuck with this, my finances got sucked into the last HDD upgrade (got it done by an official apple retailer, ICLG here in Paris, cost me 300 euros), and I thought things would be stable for a while since the logic board was changed (free of charge, which was a great relief) less than a year ago due to the nvdia bug- and now here I am with this--
anyway, here's the last kernel panic report i got, thanks in advance for your help
