PRE 9 Hard Drive

Hey, I just bought a new hard-drive. Is there any way I need to format it and how do I set up my hard-drive so that it makes PRE 9 run faster?
Thanks!!!

Are you on a PC, or a Mac? The formatting options will differ, though the results will be very similar.
On the PC, you will want to have your HDD formatted to NTSF, and not to FAT-32, which is how many/most ship. There is a similar formatting for the Mac, but I cannot recall the exact name.
Do not partition the new HDD.

  • IMac G5 (pre-iSight) Hard Drive Removal: ATA and SATA advice please!

I need to purchase a hard drive enclosure for the hard drive of my old 1st gen iMac. According to this article: http://www.welovemacs.com/ihaimg5whtyo.html - my iMac has an ATA drive, and is the only with that type. So my question is, before buying an enclosure, does it have to be specified for ATA hard drives only? I read some positive reviews about the miniStack v3 (http://www.newertech.com/products/ministackv3.php) and was considering it a good investment, but now I'm not sure if my stone age hard drive will actually run on it. I poked around their web site, but its a bit cluttered and couldn't find an answer, so I figured I'd turn to you guys; the experts!
Thanks for any help in advance! You guys are great!

Thanks for the speedy response. I'm looking through the website right now. But basically pretty much any recent enclosure holds both ATA and SATA hard drives? I got a little more information on my hard drive to clarify: Barracuda 7200.7 with 80GB. With that said, I'm probably just going to go ahead and order an enclosure and not worry too much about compatibility; however, I would feel better if someone could tell me if the miniStack v3 (link is above in the original post, says it can hold a max of 1 terabyte) is a definite "yes or no" given what I'm dealing with (and if anyone has had any personal experience with that enclosure, I would be glad to hear any general comments about it as well!) Thanks again

  • Pre-new hard drive steps

I was wondering how to properly erase/unistall mac os x 10.4 before installing a new internal hard drive.
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Paulo,
I wouldn't erase a disk before installing a new one. I'd take it out, install the new one, then using SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner, clone the old disk to the new one, then erase the old one. Or at least let the MacOSXTiger installation import all the data from my old disk with a firewire connection.
I would expect you to want an external case for your old drive. My favorite one is here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MOTG800U2/

  • Replacing  iMac G5 pre-iSight hard drive

I need to replace my HDD in my iMac G5. (Pre-iSight) Can anyone recommend a drive and a reputable seller? (OWC, Newegg, etc..) I want to make sure I get the correct drive as well. 100GB and above will do fine.
    Thanks.

[macsales.com] or [newegg.com] or [smalldog.com] are all reputable vendors. You need a 3½" SATA drive and you can put in as large a one as you can afford. Just make sure to have an external the same size to make frequent backups to.

  • What is the best external hard drive for backup on powerbook g4 17-inch?

i need to get a good external hard drive for backing up my files on my 2004 powerbook g4 17-inch. up till now ive been using thumbdrives, but i have way too much to backup now. i was thinking of getting the time capsule, but i don't have leopard version with time machine.
what would be an advisable backup to get without buying a new mactop yet?
please include model # if possible.
thanks in advance for anyone's input!

What I've done is buy the case and drive separately. The case I use is similar to this one: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW91UAL1K/ (looks like they don't offer this case with Firewire 800 anymore), and the hard drive is a Western Digital 3.5" Parallel ATA 320GB which Newegg carries at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136109. The reason I like a combination like this is that the enclosure uses the Oxford 911 chipset, and Oxford chipsets have a good track record working with our macs. The Western Digital drive comes with a 3 year warranty (many pre-packaged hard drives only have a one year warranty). It is very easy to install the drive ... you plug in the power and data connectors to the hard drive, and screw the hard drive to the case.
Whatever external hard drive you get, recommend one with a Firewire connection. Our Powerbooks can boot from a Firewire connection, however, cannot boot from a USB-only connection. Also, be aware that for a USB-only connection, if the external hard drive relies on power from it there may be a problem. This is due to the Powerbook putting minimal power out on USB. There are many people who have found that they've had to either get a dual USB cable, a USB powered hub, or an external power supply for their USB-powered external hard drive. The case I mentioned above has it's own external power supply. Firewire-powered drives don't have this problem.

  • Installing new hard drive in Mac Pro - question about compatibility.

I'm looking to install an extra internal hard drive in my 2009 Mac Pro, but I need to know if there are any compatibility issues with newer hard drives. I am looking at the Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black:

Would anyone be able to tell me if this is likely to be compatible with my 2009 8 core Mac Pro? Or if there is anything I should be looking out for in particular? I know pre-installed hard drives are 3GB/s and the above hard drive is 6GB/s, does this matter?

  • How to reinstall pre-installed iWorks after hard drive replaced?

iWork was pre-installed on my iMac (July 2010) 3.2 gHz i3 running OS10.6.8. The original hard drive was recalled by Apple and replaced. I backed up all data to Crash Plan prior to the change out. When I tried to open any of the iWorks programs I received the following error message:
I checked my install discs and application install discs, but iWork does not show up there. How can reinstall these programs?

Thanks, mate, but the computer did not come with any iWork DVD. It only had the OS install disc and the Application restore disc, neither of which contain iWork. The error message reads: "Pages cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure Pages works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X. Clic Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple."
I sent a report to Apple. This message repeats for Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. My original receipt shows the iWork app was paid for.

  • What is the best pre-installed external hard drive for my macbook pro?

I need advise on what kind of pre-enstalled external hard drive which supports both usb and firewire to get for my new macbook pro?  I would like to stay in the $100. range but am willing to go higher .

    Pre-installed with what?
Your best bet is to always format a new hard drive,  so there are no surprises.
If you buy an external HD specifying  ready for Mac ( or some such) it will cost you more for nothing.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X doesn't come with iLife applications, so you have to install them manually after installing Mac OS X.
Insert the Applications disc or Mac OS X Install Disc 2 DVD and install iLfe applications. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest update. If you want, you can purchase iMovie, GarageBand and iPhoto in the App Store, so you will get the most recent version

  • Question about activation key for pre-installed software after hard drive failure.

I had a hard drive failure on my MacBook Pro last week and had it replaced by Apple.  When I restored my computer with a Time Machine backup, Office 2011 wants an activation key to start up again.  Problem is, I had Office pre-installed when I bought my MacBook by Apple.  Where do I get the activation key to get it working again?

Do you still have the signons.sqlite and key3.db files from the IT setup?
You can find the sync account password and the sync (recovery) key in the password manager on computers where a sync account with a specific e-mail address has been set up.
    Look for:
    * chrome://weave (Mozilla Services Password)
    * chrome://weave (Mozilla Services Encryption Passphrase)

  • My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different.

My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different. When I look at my backed-up iphoto library folder I see lots of files and folders: ALbumData.xml, Attachments folder, etc. The 9.6.1 iphoto library doesn't appear to be a folder at all. Help!

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting.  With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside.  There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash.  If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder.  If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.

  • PrE 9 external hard drives

Hi, I'm new to the forum.
I have recently bought PrE 9 and think it's fantastic, but I have a few questions.
I have an external 1 TB hard drive (NTFS,) and have been storing my unedited videos on it, and I would like to keep my edited ones there too... as I have little to no experience of editing and using PrE, I want to know exactly which files I should be storing where? Any advice would be very welcome.
Also I had a big problem installing a program recently, and the long and short of it was that I had to re-image Windows 7, ouch, so I am very keen to get it right first time with PrE, in terms of file storage.
Any other tips as to good practice would be helpful too.
    many thanks,
    brushman

    Welcome to the forum.
First, take a look at this ARTICLE on external HDD's.
As for a workflow, one has to decide exactly what they want to do, and how they want to do it. Here are some thoughts, based on my general workflow, using my laptop (only computer with PrE on it) and external HDD's. Some of this will probably not apply, as I migrate my Projects between my laptop, and a workstation.
I create the Project folder structure on an external (FW-800 in my case, but eSATA would be even better). Under that structure, I create the sub-folders, that I anticipate needing. These will be Videos, Audio, SFX, Still Images, Finished AVI's, Finished AC3's, Titles, etc., and then I will Copy my Assets to the appropriate sub-folder. The originals stay on my NAS unit for safety. All stills will have been worked on in PS, and Scaled to the Frame Size of the Project, regardless of the resolution of the originals.
I locate my Scratch Disks (w/ my Media Cache) with the setting (Edit>Preferences>Scratch Disks), Same as Project. Everything needed is now under the folder structure of my Project, and I can edit to/from the external, and move it between computers. Note: each of my externals has its drive letter set in the OS of each computer, so that it is unique, and is always seen as, say my Z:\ drive, regardless of when/where I plug in the external, and when I turn it on in the process.
I edit, and output/Share/Export to the Finished AVI, or Finished AC3 (Audio) folders, so all is still contained and under the Project's folder structure.
When I am done editing, and everything has checked out, I will use the Archiver to archive my Project to another external HDD for safe-keeping. I test the archived Project. If all works fine, I just Delete the Project's root folder, deleting all of the sub-folders and their contents. I always do the archive with the full Video Assets, so if I need to do a major re-edit, all of the footage is still available to me. This means larger files, but that would save me having to re-Import, or re-Capture footage.
If one is manually doing a Copy of their Project, the Media Cache files are NOT needed. These will be the Render files (AVI's in my case), the CFA (Conformed Audio) and the PEK (Waveform Display) files. PrE will recreate all of those, if they are needed later on.
That is how I do it, and so far, have never experienced an issue.
Hope that this helps, and good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to erase a hard drive on a i MAC Power PC with OSX 10.5.8 pre-intel?

I got this i Mac G5 Power PC with a 20" screen (no iSight) and last generation of i Mac repaired.  Capacitors and a power supply did revive my machine and it works fine.  I would like to donate my machine and want to erase the hard drive and make sure that all my personal data is gone.
I have the Leopard disk and I am told that if I booth my machine with the disk while holding the C key then I can go to Disk Utility and erase my hard drive.
Does anyone have a step-by-step approach to guide me through this?
Any help will be most appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Guy

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

The dv4 series only has 1 hard drive bay, you cannot install a second drive.  If you want to have more than one hard drive, try the dv7 series
