Pre-Installed RAID card

I bought a MacPro recently and I chose to get it with the RAID card option. I was just wondering if it comes already set up, or if there is something I need to do to configure it. I bought it with two hard drives so that the RAID card could just automatically back up. I just don't know if there is something else I need to do. Thanks!

This makes no sense. The RAID card doesn't do backup.
It can do RAID 1 mirroring, but that isn't backup - it's just protection against a single disk failure. It won't enable you to restore a deleted or corrupted file.
In addition, if mirroring is all you want, then the OS can do that without the RAID card. Sure, the RAID card is better at it (takes the overhead off the OS to do the mirroring), but it isn't strictly necessary.

Installing RAID Card in XServe

Hi guys,
Here's the situation, we have a complete backup using SuperDuper to an external HD. Then we want to get the RAID card installed and format the drives and copy back all the information to the RAID set from the external drive so we can startup the server just as it was when the copy was made. Would the best method to this be:
a) Create the RAID set in terminal
b) Format the RAID in disk utility
c) Use the Restore function in disk utility to do a block level copy from the external HD to the newly created RAID set
d) Reboot server and continue on

Clone the HD using DU, CCC, SuperDuper, or your preffered tool. I highly recommend NOT being booted from the HD you're going to clone. Test the clone.
Create the RAID set.
Clone from the external HD to the RAID set, being sure that you'rebooted again form a different drive (like a CD for instance, or perhaps a different partition on the external HD).
That should do it.

I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
(nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this? bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

Apple Raid Card panic on Mac Pro Early 2008 after installing SSD as an enhanced JBOD.

I recently installed a SSD drive in my Mac Pro to replace an aging, original boot drive. I have an Apple raid card with 3 other hds attached - all in an enhanced JBOD configuration. After installing the SSD from OWC (3G Electra SATA II Compatible) everything appeared to work fine. But after 36 hours I received a apple raid card kernel panic alert. See below for diagnostic crash log. OWC support says that their drive should work fine - now I am not so sure. Anyone out there with suggestions/solutions is most welcomed.

Installed a RAID card in my Dell Inspiron 3847. However, the RAID BIOS does not show up and I cannot install Windows 7 to it.

That is basically a summary of the problem The Dell Inspiron 3847 does not come with RAID, so I tried installing a PCI-express 1x RAID card. However, the RAID BIOS never shows up. The HDDs show up when I install the RAID controller driver in Windows 7 setup, but I cannot install Windows 7. I am using an IOCrest SY-PEX40008 RAID card with a Silicon Image Sil3124 chipset.
I tried pressing the hotkeys for the RAID BIOS listed in the card's manual, but it seems to just cause bootup to freeze. BIOS also does not seem to detect the RAID card HDDs as boot options.

On XP that variable points to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\
"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders, use %APPDATA% in the File name field

Installing Apple RAID Card on original Mac Pro 1.1

After months of waiting, I finally received my ordered Apple RAID Card suggested by Apple Italia per upgrading my Mac Pro station to handle HD editing. OK. Great. the problem is that the inside of my Mac Pro does not resemble the illustrations in the manual and I can't find any instructions for mounting the card (it's the right one, on this site I found it and ordered the right one, the blue card) but I DON'T have the PCI Slider illustrated in the manual. Since you clame that I CAN install this RAID card (otherwise I wouldn't have bought it!) but I don't know if the absence of ANY sliding element in the place of the PCI Slider mentioned means that I have to connect wires, change the inside, go to an Apple Authorized Dealer (where I bought the thing!)? Can anyone help me?

Not sure what you mean by 'PCI Slider'. If you can reference the step this component is mention in the manual it might help.

Installing, a Apple Raid Card

Hi All
I have got my hands on a Apple Raid card (Free), I have checked it all out and it is the correct model for my Mac Pro (early 2009 i believe). now came the fun bit
I opend the MP up and installed the card as shown in the instructions (not to hard as im tech savvy) turned it all on and nothing, no apple logo, just the white screen and the little apple bing startup sound.
do I have to do any prep first to install this ?
do I have to hold any special keys down on start up ?
I dont mind having to do a full frech install ? (I was planning this anyway with Mavericks just come out)

Help with installing Arch x64 to Silicon Image SiI 0680 raid card

I am having one heck of a time trying to find information on installing Arch on a Silicon Image SiI 0680 raid card. I have searched both the wiki and the forums and I cannot find any information about this card. I am trying to install a raid 0 setup on Arch x64 Could someone point me in the right direction, any help is appreciated. Thank you.

How do I partition a disc with a raid card installed for fcp x and motion

Hi,
I have just downloaded fcp x and purchased motion but have found out the drivers for my AJA io HD are not available as yet so decided to revert to FCP 6.5. My system now runs like a dog and then I discovered FCP x and Motion should be installed on a separete partition. I have a Raid card installed on my mac and the application disc disk does not enough space so do not know what I should do. Any help would be welcome.

The issues I have is No drivers for Aja ioHD so I cant test FCP X to see how it works. When I return to my FCP version 6 it just does not run like it used to and keeps hanging the Aja ioHD so I have to keep refreshing. My motion projects on the FCP timeline now do not open in the old version of motion so I cant round robin as before. My main disc does not have enough space to run FCP X projects and a post on Apple forum said to run FCP X and Motion on a new partition if you still need to use FCP 6. As I have a Raid card with enough space, If I created a partition on it for fcp X and Motion 5 would FCP 6 work properly again.
I could not see how to create a partition on the Raid drive?

Installing HD Not On RAID Card

I want to add another Hard Drive to my Mac Pro. I have a RAID Card installed. I want to install a new Hard Drive that does not connect to the RAID Card. Is this possible?
I have read articles that show how to install a fifth hard drive. Would this fifth hard drive be connected to the RAID Card if it is plugged into the motherboard slot?

I've yet to find documentation on the RAID PCI Card. There's some for the Xserve, but none that I've found for the PCI Mac Pro one. I could be looking in the wrong places.
I did see a thread elsewhere that Apple is keeping the documentation on the RAID PCI Card to themselves (as one poor man bought one and tried, without success, to install one himself).

Intel Xserve With Raid card Remote install Question

I am currently trying to remotely install OSX server on an Intel 2008 Xserve with a newly fitted raid card (Apple) I get as far as choosing which HD to install but none of the drives show? (there are all Apple brand 300GB SAS)
Can I only install it locally on the machine if a Raid card/SAS drives are in there??

XServe with hardware RAID card and headless install

Today, while trying to remotely install Mac OS X Server 10.4 ("Tiger") on an Apple XServe G5 with hardware RAID card, I discovered that it did not report the IP address of the server (booted from CD) with the sa_srchr command as it did with Mac OS X Server 10.3. With Mac OS X Server 10.3, I could boot the server from the CD, use the sa_srchr command from a remote machine to find the IP address, ssh into the server and user megaraid to create or recreate the RAID volumes using the internal drives in the server.
When I boot the XServe from the Mac OS Server 10.4 CD and run the sa_srchr command from a remote computer, I get "No Longer Used" in the place where the IP address should be (as it was in 10.3 Server and as it is described in the current, 10.4 Server, "Command Line Administration" manual).
Example: localhost#2xCPUFormat#No Longer Used #xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx#Mac OS X Server 10.4#RDY4PkgInstall#3.0#512
Just as an experiment, I threw the Mac OS X Server 10.4 DVD into an iMac G5 and booted it. Using the sa_srchr command, I get the same "No Longer Used" where the IP address should be.
Does anyone know:
Is this a problem with the original "Mac OS X Server 10.4.0" installation CDs? Do I need 10.4.1, 10.4.2 or 10.4.3 CD/DVD media?
Has this functionality been removed from Tiger install discs? Is there another way to create the RAID volumes?
I know that I can use the Mac OS X 10.3 Server disks to work around this, but it doesn't seem like I should have to...

Are you sure you have the 10.4 Admin Tools installed on the 'client' machine? I've seen this happen when trying to set up a 10.4 server from a machine with 10.3 Admin Tools installed. Try deleting the Admin Tools from your client machine, and re-install from a 10.4 DVD.

K7N2G-ILSR: How to boot from SATA when a raid card is installed

The situation:
1. I have a separate raid controller (Silicon chip) with 2 drives on raid 0.
2. I have another drive (my boot drive) that I want to place on the onboard Promise SATA raid controller.
The problem:
The bios doesn't include an option to specifically boot from SATA, only SCSI. So when I place my boot drive to the onboard Promise SATA raid controller, the system won't boot because it's looking for system files on the raid 0 drive.
Is there a workaround for this?

Well, all my drives are IDE. I did try the SATA RAID using lumberjacker's bios but it isn't stable.
Aside from 3 IDE drives, I also have 2 atapi drives (cdr-w, dvd).
Here's my current setup:
ide 0 - boot drive (master), DVD (slave)
ide 1 - cdr-w (master)
onboard ide (sata controller) - (vacant)
SATA 1 - (vacant)
SATA 2 - (vacant)
promise raid card (2 ide ports)- 2 hard drives on raid 0 (both as master)
What I really want to do is place my boot drive on the SATA port (using a pata to sata converter), or on the onboard promise parallel port. So that it can have it's own port.
