Pre Press trapping question

I've been here with this issue before, but now I need a refinement on method.
In this instance I have a PMS spot color solid block with type over that using a second solid PMS spot color. I need to create a trap and 'overprint black is not working in this case, the two colors butt up against each other with no overlap in the platemaker roam. Short of making the trap manually, and with no allowance to buy a third party app at this point, is there a way to create the trap in Illustrator?
TIA,
Ken

Hi Ken,
Here's my attempt at explaining the technique we used in our pre-press house; you get more control and maintain the integrity of the type characters better than the stroking options (plus Illustrator's stroking behavior has not remained consistent with version changes). Illustrator's Trap feature in the Pathfinder menu can be useful, but only works for some situations.
To choke a lighter background under darker type, set the type to overprint, then use a layer of white underneath the overprinting object, inset by the trap amount, to knock out the area that will not be trapped. Here it is step by step:
- set the type Attribute to overprint fill
- make a copy of the type and paste it directly behind* your original type
- hide your original type for this step: convert the copy to outlines, offset path by your trap amount (needs to be a negative number so that the path in inset), delete the type copy and keep just the offset version, fill it with white, and turn off overprint
- make your original type visible again, and turn on overprint preview. You should see a darker outline around the characters
To spread light type into a dark background, leave the type as its spot color without overprinting anything, then use a copy of the type that is offset by the trap amount directly beneath it and set to overprint. Here it is step by step:
- make a copy of the type and paste it directly behind your original type
- hide your original type for this step: convert the copy to outlines, offset path by your trap amount (needs to be a positive number so that the path in outset), leave it the same color as your original type, and turn on overprint
- make your original type visible again. You should see a darker outline around the characters
*Tip: one of my favorite Illustrator features is the ability to paste in front or paste behind using Command-F and Command-B. So, using an object tool, Command-C to copy the type, do not deselect, Command-B to paste the copy immediately behind what is selected...

  • Snow Leopard's Default Gamma & Color Correcting for Pre Press in Photoshop CS4

After searching the forums I thought I would start my own thread on this subject.
I have Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS4 and I have continued to color correct, for pre press, in OS 10.4.11 Tiger with the 1.8 Default Gamma and 6500 color tempurature, using Apple's display calibration tools in the OS's System Preferances.
I want to switch to Snow Leaopard but with it's Defualt Gamma of 2.2, I'm not able to make my minitor manually adjust to the needed range for brightness and contrast that is needed to begin the calibration process.  Is there a way to color correct photos, for pre pre press, in Photoshop with a 2.2 Gamma setting in my display preferances?

I have had success just with Apple's System Preferences for color calibration.  I do design and pre press for a number of customers of the various printers I work with.  Most of the photos I work with are from digital cameras and are provided by the customer.  The only point in the whole process, where the photos get adjusted to have eye pleasing color, when coming off the printing press, is when I work with them.
The printers I work with continue to send their customers to me, for design and pre press, because they like my color work on the photos.  I send the pre press files as Press Optimized PDFs to the printer's FTP server and the printer does all the direct to plate separations in-house.  I want to continue to be reliable in that area and so the brighter default Gamma built into Snow Leopard seems to complicate things if I ever want to move up from Tiger to Snow Leopard.
I have two 17" Apple CRT displays that cannot adjust into calibration range when I'm booted in Snow Leopard. These CRT displays can only manually adjust in range for calibration under Tiger or Leopard. It sounds like if I purchase an IPS based LCD monitor, made by Apple, Dell, or other brands, I will probably be able to manually adjust the display for Gamma 1.8, under Snow Leopard.
I was posing this question about using Gamma 2.2 because if I could color correct for pre press with the 2.2 setting, I could continue to use my old Apple 17" CRT displays and also any web content I create will preview closer in color, on PCs as they will on my Mac.  Maybe my review PDFs will view with similar color on my customers PCs if I work with a 2.2 Gamma setting and instead of 1.8.  For now I know I will keep my printers happy if I continue to work with a monitor that has a 1.8 Gamma setting and a 6500 color temperature setting.  If that must continue to be the standard for pre press, then I will need to get an IPS based LCD monitor that will allow me to adjust in the 1.8 Gamma range while booted in Snow Leopard.

  • PDF workflow : pre-press preparations in Illustrator interfere  :  Suggestions?

Our packaging graphics group adopted a PDF workflow which has eliminated the clutter common of art file submissions. However, one print provider must preform additional preparations to the artwork, inserting supplier insignia and adding special press markings in addition to the customary trim marks and such. These final pre-press preparations are performed in Illustrator. Consequently, Illustrator ignores our PDF's embedded fonts. Unless the supplier has the same fonts installed, the PDF won't output accurately when it's saved/distilled again.
Any suggestions on how to retain a PDF workflow when pre-press preparations involve adding content?

You might look at inserting these objects as a watermark in PDF format?
Your choice is slightly limited with Acrobat but Enfocus Pitstop might
help? You can create a page mark action which will detect the trim box
and then append custom information outside for the pre-press
    requirements ...

    Dear all Gurus,
We are going to implement Oracle EBS r12, for industrial concern, we have following quires if any peer may suggest.
    1) we heard the oracle R12 has build new release with 11g db , is it been practical for choosing it for corporate ???
    2) Linux Read hat which version is more stable like 5 releases is compatible with R12 new release?
    3) We are also thinking for 64 bit architecture rather than 32 bit, could any one figure out the practical pros and cons for this.
    4) We are also wondering about the server machine brand and its configurations like HP DL380 G6, DELL 2850? could any one share abut his experience about the same.
    5) What sort of Server configurations (Processor , 2way -4way , RAM , HD and other accessories ) for r12 Multi node setup for 150 clients (DB Server , Apps Server , Test Prod )
    6) What should be backup strategies like tap backup and how much space requirements we must have provisioned for retaining almost 2~3 month backup.
    7) Application implementations methodologies?
    8)
I know to address our queries would be time consuming for you bust peoples , but I would really oblige for being shared your journey this would defiantly the PATH way for other like mentoring for others.
looking forward your valuable instructions ASAP.

  • New install for Pre-press department

    Hi all,
I am new to OSX server and have never really worked with it before. I need to set up the server on a PowerMac G5 1.8Ghz for a pre-press department. We have a Windows Server 2003 that does our file ripping. We tried to use the PowerMac running OSX handle the files that we used, but there seemed to be some problems with the files back and fort. I am just wondering if there is anything I should look into before I install the server software? All help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jason

Well J, I sure you know what is involved with a workflow. This is my main job as a Pre-press computer consultant. In order for anyone to give you suggestions or help in this matter you need to supply MUCH more detail as to what is going where and coming from where, so on, so fourth, etc... You've told me the Windows unit was acting as a RIP. What are you RIPing and where does it go? What is the software being used to RIP? What do you EXACTLY want to do on the OS X Server, what will be it's job? Where do the files come from and from how many users? Describe the current workflow in as much detail as you can and what the goal of your change is. Also describe all current problem in detail. What applications are being used, Indesign, Quark, Photoshop or some other application? Are the workstations Mac or PC? If PC then 98-2ndED, 2000pro, XP home or Pro and the Mac OS's would be nice also.

  • Help: Sending a Pages File to Pre-Press?

    Hi Everyone,
Can I send a Pages file to pre-press? Within the Print menu, I saved the file as a PDF. Can this help?
    Thank you so much

A print shop is extremely unlikely to be able to
handle Pages' native file format. However, I have
had very good results from sending printers the PDF
    that it produces.
    Thanks Tulse.
For colourful (CMYK) documents, the PDF that Pages produces is okey; but for two colour documents or 4+1 color documents I am not sure. I think I may need to use Adobe Acrobat as posted before. Thanks - Baydal

    Hello,
Yes, normally holding alt key or option key will show your boot choices, but some Linux distros need a boot manager installed.

  • Pre-sale MacBooks question.

Hey - I know this Question is a Pre-sales question but there isn't a forum section for that - and apples contact us section haver replied after two days, so I'm posting here
I'm looking at buying either the new MacBook Pro 13" or the MacBook Air, however I can't decide which one to go for, I went to London last week and had a session on the old Pro and Air,  it helped - but it only helped by making me sure I wanted one of them...
I was wondering, would it be possible for me to purchase one MacBook and try it out for a few days, and then swap it and try the other?
    Eg:
Buy MacBook Air, use for two days, bring back, try out MacBook pro (and pay the extra amount)?
    Sorry if that sounds stupid,
    Cheers,
    Tom.

There is a restocking fee for open items. You might get away with the restocking fee if you do by another similar item

  • Xbox One Pre Order Fullfulment question

Ok I know you guys have answered these questions, a million times. I am wondering, I wont be able to attend the midnight launch. I plan on being there right when the doors open that morning. Will you guys have enough consoles for us. I forgot to say I did pre order. I cant imagine your stores not, because that would mean you sold all the pre ordered consoles at the midnight release. Which sounds crazy just typing it. I doubt that will happen any reisurance will help.

You should be fine.  A lot of people are spazzing out and in panic mode.
If buy some chance you don't get it on Friday you will have it with in a few weeks.
Personally i would not try to be there at midnight and it isn't worth taking time off from work to get it.
I didn't pre-order an Xbox because my daughter said to wait on one becuase she wants to see which way all her friends go if they get a  new system.  If your going to change platforms this would be the time to do so.
If none of her friends go PS or Xbox One right away she would still play our Xbox 360 becuase if she cannot play with her friends she has no interest in a new system.
I did pre-order a PS4 that I am picking up tonight but it is a gift and not for home  use.
I think you will be fine with your Xbox One

  • Pre-Sales Installation Questions on Adobe CS6

I am thinking about getting Adobe Creative Suite Design Web Premium CS6 from the local campus bookstore so I can use it with the web certificate program I am taking. They have a boxed version which I will probably get. Less expensive than the digital download card version. I had some pre-sales question before I commit to buying it. The person I talked to on the phone was not able to answer a few questions about the software, must have been a newbie and unfortunately the only one in the department at the time.
Since I will be purchasing the boxed version directly from the store, do I need to still e-mail some kind of student proof to Adobe or is a student e-mail sufficient? How does that work part of the installation work/what's involved? Is there a serial number in the box already or will it be sent by e-mail?
Also, my Mac may be on it's last leg but it seems to be hanging in there. Can't afford to buy a new computer just yet. What happens if the hard drive experiences some kind of data failure. If I need to reinstall on a new computer or replacement boot drive, do I have to repeat the whole process of verification of some kind prior to re-installing?
Once I graduate (and understand that will not be able to keep my student email address), how will this effect me in regards to the Adobe software? What if I need to reinstall or install it on a laptop (I heard you can install it on two computers)?

You only verify once. Acceptance makes you eligible for a serial number.
To re-install after that, you install the software and enter your serial number.
Ensure that your computer meets the minimum requirements to run CS6.
Once I graduate (and understand that will not be able to keep my student email address), how will this effect me in regards to the Adobe software?
You can still continue using your student software after you graduate.
    http://prodesigntools.com/difference-between-adobe-cs5-student-editions-vs-regular.html
You will pay normal retail price for other Adobe software or to upgrade or to join the Cloud.
What if I need to reinstall or install it on a laptop (I heard you can install it on two computers)?
Download the software installer (or use your disc), install it and enter your serial number.
Your license entitles you to activate the software on a maximum of two computers at the same time.
Note: the CS6 license is operating system specific i.e. works on 2 x Windows only or 2 x Mac only. You cannot mix and match. However you can mix and match Cloud (CC) software.

  • Mac Mini Pre 2009 Wireless Question

I have 3 ways of accessing my wireless network. My wife's new macbook (5,1), my iPhone 3G and my pre 2009 Mac Mini. All worked in our old house. We just moved and wireless router is located further away from my mac mini.
Wife's computer and my iPhone get "full bar" reception but my Mac Mini cant even get through password phase to new network and has sporadic reception. If I move Mac Mini next to router seems to work fine...
Is it really possible that the wireless reception on Mac Mini is so much weaker than other 2 Mac's; or do I have another problem?
    Thanks

Have you tried moving the new location of the wireless router to see if that makes a difference? In my house, for example, when I have the wireless router on the desk I don't get as good a signal coverage as when I place the router at the top of a tall bookshelf, just under the ceiling.
If that doesn't help, you might want to post this in the mini discussions at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=158

  • PRE POST FADER Question.....

I have a lead vocal sent via a send, to an AUX with a delay on it. I muted the lead vocal track, but am still hearing the echo from the delay AUX track. I checked, and it is set to POST fader. So this shouldn't happen.
I have just noticed something while writing this.
The track in question is a mono track, with the SEND on it sent to the AUX as stated.
I have other tracks sent to the Aux with the delay, and when they are muted, they do NOT come through the delay. The DIFFERENCE is, those are AUX tracks.
So....6 background mono tracks whose output is set to say, BUS 1. AUX with BUSS one as an input, for all the backgrounds. That AUX has a SEND to the DELAY buss, and when it is muted, no sound comes out the delay, which is correct.
So it SEEMS that the fact that my LEAD vocal that I am having the problem with, is a mono track, set to the stereo out, with a send to the delay, and is NOT working properly. Hmmm...am I onto something here? Bug?

Got it, I see, yes. My mistake was in thinking muting the BVX Aux would mute the send to the DEL Aux, because it's been a long day mixing and I was not thinking this out. Thanks for that!
Muting AUX tracks to mute groups of vocals make it easy to do stems, and in this case, it was a background vocal, but the ONLY background vocal that needed to have a delay. There were many other backing vocal tracks that you can't see here also assigned to that BVX AUX. It really shouldn't have been grouped at all with the rest of the backs in the first place. I would normally not have a send going to a delay on one individual track that was assigned to a group (bus) track like the BVX Aux. Normally the send to the delay would be on the AUX track. This was an unusual case, and I didn't route the "Ad Lib" track in a manner that makes sense. Way too long a day mixing;)
Thanks for clearing this up. Thought I was going crazy. Well, I kind of was...;)

  • PRE 9 Performance question

    Hi all,
Finally made the big move from PRE4 to PRE9.0.1.  As usual with PRE upgrades there are functions that were removed that make me scratch my head, such as no longer able to designate favorate transitions.  And moving the zoom in-out slider over to the edge of the display, and dumbing down the Markers icons (resulting in taking more mouse clicks now just to add a marker).  But those are just annoyances.
My actual problem is that some functions seem to be much slower than in my previous version (on same PC).  For example, a simple rendering of two 5 second title clips with a transition joining them takes longer than real-time to render (takes longer than 10 seconds to render 10 seconds worth of video).  Nothing special - two tracks, one A/V and one just the title.  Rendering other places such as fade-in/out is slow also.  This is SD AVI video from the same DV camera I've used for years (Panasonic PV-GS320).
Scrubbing works fine - I can't move the CTI faster than it can display/play audio.  DVD burn time seems reasonable (and successful) although I have not done anything lengthy yet.  No crashes, and on the plus side so far all the problems I had with the titler in PRE4 are fixed now.  I do notice the same problem Neale mentioned where displaying the thumbnails on the timeline is very slow.
Update: I did notice one wierd thing:  when you mouse-over a clip on the timeline and you get the little window with the start/end/duration information, the little window actually blinks off and on - and I'm not moving the mouse.  On (1/2 second or so) off (1 second).  It's on just briefly enough it takes a few tries to read the information.
    Specs on the PC:
HP PC with AMD Athlon II x4 630 CPU @ 2.8 GHz
    6GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit - current on patches
Three internal SATA HD's (one for software, one for video, one for rendering)
Current video driver (NVIDIA GEFORCE 9100 version 8.17.12.6099)
    Current Quicktime  7.6.9
Can anyone think of anything I'm not checking?    Or is PRE9 just slower?
    Thanks!
    Bob

... and to add to Steve's comment, you will have the same response with more
demanding video (Full HD TOD, AVCHD etc).
So to keep it seamless, they made it slow for SD as well
