  • Pre shuts down when you close slider keyboard

I have a Sprint Pre, and it's been all weird for me lately. This afternoon, while it was plugged in via USB to charge, the keyboard just stopped working. It didn't respond at all. When I unplugged it, the phone shut down and would not restart. If I tried to plug it in again, all I would see is a white battery with a question mark in the middle on the screen. I could reboot it later by pressing orange+sym+power, but then I found that sliding the keyboard close after that shut down my phone, and I could only restart it after sliding the keyboard open again. This happens to me even after using webOS doctor on it. Please help me resolve this!

  • Override Airport Shut down when MacBook is closed

I am very new to Macs and their operation which is frustrating to say the least considering the fact that I am an IT person specializing in Windows based environments.
Anyway is there a way to keep an active LAN connection via Airport when a MacBook Pro is closed but still powered on? I've looked every where but cant seem to find a way to override this setting.
In other words I would like to be able to close my MacBook but not have it "go to sleep" or shut down the airport which in turns terminated all active internet and remote desktop connections.
    Thanks,
    Mike

When you close the lid on an MBP it goes to sleep by default. There is nothing left running to maintain the internet connection. PC laptops work the same way.
There is a "clamshell" mode when an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse are connected that may be what you are looking for.

  • Windows shuts down when monitor is closed

I am having a problem with my bootcamp (Windows mode). 13 inch MacBook with Windows 7 partition. It is basically working fine, but as soon as close the lid the system automatically shuts down and never comes back unless I turn on it again. Does any one know the answer to this problem? This became a problem to me since I tryed to use Dell external monitor on my Windows partition. I have to use Windows in order to use certain 3D program that only works on Windows. Unfortunately I am not able to make the Windows partition and the external monitor work together. In Windows mode the monitor is not detected by the computer as though nothing has been connected. But I found out one thing. I connected to the external monitor and started on Windows mode the notebook display lid open at first. Then when the system was ready to work, I closed the lid (the external monitor connected but not detected by the system), but this time the Windows mode didn't shut down by itself. It continued being active just like the lid wasn't closed at all. So it seems like the Windows partition knows that something is connected, but it doesn't make the monitor work with it.
Can anyone help me? It is very important for me to be able to use the external monitor on Windows mode because of my school work. Thanks a lot.

  • MBP shuts down when lid half closed

Hope for some feedback. Quite a while ago (several months at least) I noticed that when I closed the lid the computer shut off rather than went to sleep. It seemed kind of random at first, and taking it in is a hassle. I did the troubleshooting at the reset the SMC instructions, and nothing else seemed to be going wrong. I mean I had had the mother board replaced 2x, a new screen, hard drive and a new fan,and memory upgrades since purchase. When I did go in the person at the Genius Bar indicated that probably it had to do with the system being out of date and it just wasn't getting the upgrades that later products were able to receive. Now, some of the mentioned repairs were when my Applecare had expired, believe me I asked if it was worth it to repair and I was told it was. I use Adobe CS3 for work and can't afford really to buy the latest as well as a new laptop. So I went home somewhat discouraged but just worked around it - remembered to do a shut down myself, or walked around with the lid open (not advised I know) and with the exception of a few times I just automatically shut the lid, I was coping, though frustrated. Yesterday it shut off with 37% battery left, so I reviewed the SMC instructions and redid. No difference. But I did notice when I took the time to close the lid slowly the shut down initiates when the lid is about 1/3 of the way down. Any ideas out there as to the mechanism? Could something be loose from all the hardware replacements? BTW, this is the very first time I ever found a person working at the Genuis Bar to be so dismissive. Anyone surfing the net this Labor Day week-end? Hoping for help. The machine is the 2.4 GHz Core Duo 17" running Leopard, the Snow Leopard is my sister's

  • Firefox.exe*32 process does not shut down when program is closed in version 17.0.1, on windows 7 64 bit OS.

When trying to open Firefox browser, I get a message Firefox is already running... You can stop the process or restart the computer. This is a recent problem and I can't think of any changes that may have occurred to change the functioning of the two programs.

The support article on Firefox "hanging" has a few pointer on Firefox failing to fully shut down and clean up after itself. Does anything here help:

  • Computer does soft "shut down" when lid is closed

    Hello everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro I bought in late 2008 that has been having a strange problem for the past six months or so. I take my laptop with me everywhere. About 50% of the time when I open the lid, the computer will have gone into a sort of soft "shut down" while it was asleep. In other words, it used to simply wake up when I opened the lid, but now I have to hit the power button as if the computer had discharged and wait a minute or so for it to wake up. The battery is always at full on these occasions, so not sure why it would do so. Anyone else have a similar problem?

    Hi Sam,
At a guess the sleep mode setting has changed or it's getting confused about the state, try using SmartSleep and see if that makes the behaviour more consistent.

  • Pre Turns Off or Shuts Down when I close the keyboard

Is my pre screwed or is it OS?
It shuts off, not the version that other people have had where you have to pop the battery (the power button still works to turn it back on) out to get it to restart.  Anyway, it shuts off when I slide it closed.  I thought maybe something loose so I did it very slowly, not allowing it to even go all the way, the minute that the sensor tripped it back into "no keyboard" mode it turns off.
It's especially bad when on bluetooth...happens every single time.
Is there a solution for this.  Please palm, a lot of people are having this problem and there is no answer yet?
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Palm is on deathwatch.  The Pre could have really kept them afloat, but there are too many problems with it.  When I first got my Pre in June, it was awesome!  Everything worked great.  But now, I am always having problems with it.  Here is the list:
    1. Pre turns off or shuts down when I close the keyboard.  (I had to make this one the first on the list since it is the topic.)
    2. Pre turn off or shuts down for no apparent reason and the only solution is to remove the battery, wait a second, put the battery back in, then turn it back on.  This takes forever.  Plus, because I have removed the back so often, my Pre squeaks when I am typing (from the plastic).  It is very annoying.
    3. The navigation system has a glitch where most of the time, it cannot find my current location.  The message says to make sure I am in clear view of the sky, but i always am.  There are many posts about this problem in other sections.  There are some solutions, and the often work, but it takes 5 minutes to reset the system.  It is a beating.
    4. The navigation system voice is usually very clear, but sometimes, the voice will skip over the names of streets as she is calling out the directions.  Ex. "Turn right on ________ Drive."
    5. Sometimes the keyboard will stop working.  I have to remove/replace the battery.  Again, this is time-consuming and further contributes to the squeaking problem when typing because you have removed the back so many times.
I like Sprint because I can get unlimited data, txt, and mobile-to-mobile calling for $70/mo.  So, I hope that someone comes out with a great touch-screen phone (not the BB Storm), because I want to stick with Sprint.  If you go with an iphone, you have to get AT&T, which will cost you at least $100 for the same.  That is a $360/yr difference!  I am sticking with Sprint.

  • MacBook shuts down when closed

It's connected to power and I don't understand why it keeps shutting down when I close the computer. I just want it to sleep. Is there some sort of setting I need to adjust? I've looked everywhere.
    TIA

I am having a similar problem, I have looked for settings that could be adjusted. I did not changed any settings previous to the problem starting. When I open the lid the keyboard is lit but the computer does not respond to mouse clicks or typing, the sleep light is off. I have to hold the on/off button until the keyboard goes out then turn the computer back on.

  • Why does my macbook shut down when the lid is closed?

    Hi,
    I have a Macbook Pro (mid-2012) running 10.9.1
Last week out of the blue, the Macbook started shutting down whenever I close the lid.
When I open the lid, the logon screen appears (as if it's been asleep as normal) but almost immediately reboots itself.
Has anyone else got the same issue? Any idea how to resolve?
    Thanks

If after you open the lid you do get the login screen, almost immediately, but then it restarts your system is not shutting down when you close the lid. It is going into a sleep state but then crashes when trying to come out of that sleep state. There are quite a few posts on this problem and it seems to be caused by the system going into the Deep Sleep state also known as the hibernate mode. That is where the contents of the RAM is written to the hard drive and the system suspends supplying power to the RAM chips so the system uses even less power then in regular sleep mode.
That is only supposed to happen after the system has been in the regular sleep mode for an extended period of time.
To check the state of the huiberbnate mode open terminal and type in, or copy and paste, this command.
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
To check the state of all power management settings use the command.
    pmset -g

  • MacBook Pro keeps shutting down when the screen is closed

Hi, I have a 2011 15inch MacBook Pro and it keeps shutting down rather than sleeping when I shut the screen. It also shuts down when left for short periods of time rather than sleeping. I have updated it yesterday and still the problem happens. I also installed a virus check to see if that was the problem and it didnt find anything it could fix! Any help is much appreciated!!!

Try a SMC reset.  That may correct the situation.

  • N900 shuts down when opening slider

Does anyone else have this problem? I believe I've figured out that it happens when I put a certain battery in it. I have three, total, because my previous phone was a 5800, so I had ordered an extra one. So, now I have three that I can use in my N900.
I think it is an official Nokia battery because it looks exactly like the others...
Anyway, my phone shuts down when I open the slider, using a fully-charged battery. The lights dim as if it is a power failure and it does not reboot like the others having the reboot problem...
    Sorry for rambling on!
    Any ideas? Thanks
    Recent phones: N91, N95-4, 5800xm, N900, E7, & now the beautiful N9

    Hi guys
I have a very similar problem and have been unable to enjoy my phone!
I got a new N900 yesterday, for the 2nd time, but the device is still manifesting the same symptoms:
    - shuts itself down regularly, whether in use or not;
    - sliding the keyboard back in causes it to shut down;
    - it shut down when it was taken off the charger;
    - I left it on the charger overnight and it stayed up all night (>10hrs);
    - even when it is on (for a short while) the screen stays inactive and blank permanently, and the device shuts down when I attempt to slide it open to check that it is indeed on
    - attempt to start it up again are not always responded to, and when it does it starts to boot up and then dies again
    - it barely stays up long enough to use it for any purpose
    - sometimes the charger responds to the power supply and sometimes it doesn't
This was exactly what was happening with the new one I recieved from and sent back to Nokia within days. They asked me to return it without the battery and charger and claimed to have tested the new one before sending it back to me. I have put in the battery and used the charger from the previous new device.
I have tried to analyse the problem and I am beginning to think that the issue might be related to either a dodgy battery or charger. What do you think?
I have asked Nokia to send me a replacement charger and batter. In the meantime, have you any suggestions I could try?
    Thanks.

  • Why does Macbook Pro have gray "curtain"and msg to shut down when playing video online?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard v 10.6.8 and have put on all the security updates.
I bought this machine just days after the newest MBP's were released with Lion because I wanted to stay with Snow Leopard
From the very beginning I would have occasional "gray screens" with a message that I'd encounterd a problem and needed to shut down.  It always occured while I was watching a streaming video online (Flash?) but it didn't always happen.  I updated my Flash plugin and that seemed to help.  I use both Safari and FireFox and both are now updated to the latest versions.
I had also noticed via iCleanMemory that my memory availability was very low .....I always have many tabs open in my browsers and have backup software that backs up to online storage running and when I watched a video, it dropped to almost 0 and everything ran slow.  I had 4 GB Ram.
So, I ordered new ram and put that in and now have 8 GB.  Machine runs fast. Love it....except it keeps giving me that veil of gray and the message to shut down.  It happens several times a day now and while usually in conjunction with watching a video clip, it's not always the case.  But I have lots of available memory.  That wasn't the issue.
I found an Apple Support paper relative to needing a video update on some mid 2010 MBP's and downloaded it.  It won't install and says it won't run on my system so that didn't help.
I'm at my wits' end trying to keep this thing running.  Everytime I have to shut it down it means a minimum of 8 min...sometimes more.....before it will restart.  If I try to restart sooner than that, it begins to boot and then just has lines and lines of numbers and code running across it....and often continuous beeping sounds and I have to hold the button down to shut it off again.  If I wait long enough, it does boot back up and sometimes runs fine as long as I'm not watching video clips, a streaming tv show or clicking on a lot of links in web pages.
I don't believe it has shut down when I was doing anything that wasn't web related....i.e. on a browser. And, when I was running with only 4 gb ram, it rarely shut down, just ran very, very slowly.  Now with 8 gb ram it is speedy but doesn't seem to want to keep working!
Anyone have any ideas what I should try next?
    Thanks
    Paula

    Hi Allan,
    Thanks for your reply.
I have been closing iCleanMemory but the shut down (kernel panic) was still happening.  Not sure how to go about uninstalling it as it's one that runs at start-up and dragging it to the trash might not get rid of it completely.  I"ll find it's web site and see if they have any info.
Haven't checked your web link yet (it's late and gotta get to bed) but will do so tomorrow.
I also run Backblaze and DropBox that begin at startup and are constantly updating in the background, iStatMenus and Sharpshooter.
The kernel panics were happening....tho much less frequently.....before i put iClean Memory on.  If I remember right, I installed it just because I had those periodic shut downs and wondered if it was a lack of memory.  Because I then saw that memory was very low all the time, I decided I must need to put more memory in.  And that seems to have made the issue worse while also making the machine work faster for the time it is running.
Now, I've been working on here for a couple of hours and had no problem at all......but I haven't asked it to play any kind of video.  Before I quit for the night, I'll try to watch the last one I tried that caused it to shut down and see if it does it again.
I do appreciate your help as I have just enough knowledge about these things to be dangerous.
    Paula
