Pre12 – unable to burn AVCHD to DVD media

I'm using Pre 12 with Windows 8, editing AVCHD video, and want to burn AVCHD to DVD disk media (to play on a Blu-ray player).  However, whenever I try Pre12 shows “media not present” as status, despite having a blank DVD in the drive.  But, simply changing from AVCHD to DVD works fine.
Some background:  I’ve been a Premiere Elements user since V1 and after purchasing a HD camera several years ago I’ve burned many short HD videos on DVD media s using Pre 10 and 11 AVCHD format option.  However, that was before converting to a new computer and installing Pre12.
My new computer is a Dell XPS 8700, Win dows 8 64 bit, with an internal Blu-ray Combo Drive (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD). The drive shows in Windows Devices as “HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH20N”.  It claims to read and write DVD media in either the plus or minus types.  I’ve been using TDK single side DVD + media. I've reported the problem to Dell Technical Support without success.
So, I don’t know if the problem is with my hardware, media, or a bug in Pre12, and would greatly appreciate advice.
Thanks in advance

1. Yes, HD or SD video will burn (in DVD format) to DVD media on either internal or external optical drive.  The reinstall of Pre 12.0 solved that problem.
2. There was no change to results when attempting to burn AVCHD to DVD media.  The internal optical drive continues to show "media not present", while the external drive shows "ready"
3. There was no change to results when burning to Blu-ray which continutes to operate correctly - the external drive shows "ready" (and burns are still successful).  Note that the internal drive can only write DVD media so isn't shown by Pre 12 for this task.
Below is revised table of results:

  • Unable to burn AUDIO to DVD or Disk image, video is fine

As many other posts have stated; I am unable to burn the Audio portion of an iDVD nor does "save as disk image" transfer the audio of my iDVD. Transferred an iMovie, (an iPhoto set of photos with iTunes audio imported into iMovie) to iDVD. Audio plays on iMovie, audio plays on iDVD preview. Tried removing recommended ~com.apple.iXXX.plist, no help. Tried different encoding methods: i.e. Best/High/Professional. Tried saving to different sizes HD/Large/etc. Tried Share Media in iTunes, Media Browser, etc. Checked Main Audio, volume slider bar in iDVD. Tried importing audio into iDVD rather than transferring from iMovie. It doesn't seem to matter how I build the iDVD it works, until I go to Save As Disk Image or Burn DVD. Video works great (better in Large than HD) Audio doesn't transfer.
21 total minutes, 1.15GB of final iDVD using a default theme.

    Hi
(an iPhoto set of photos with iTunes audio imported into iMovie) to iDVD
Yes this is the problem - in iTunes there is a copy-protection that moves over
    Result
    • Plays well in iMovie
    • Plays well in iDVD preview
    • Silent on DVD
Only way around this is to in iTunes collect needed audio into a play-list
Burn this out as an Audio-CD and .aiff (NOT .mp3)
Use the audio on this CD in Your iMovie project.

  • Unable to burn Dual Layer DVD's with Toast

    Hi all,
I'm having issues trying to burn dual layer dvd's with either Toast 10.0.8 or 11.0.1. I keep getting the Interface -50 error and sense key 0x02 error saying media is incompatible.
I have tried dvd's by DataWrite and Elite M and they both show error. It's strange though as I have been using previously purchased Elite M dual layer dvd's of the same spec as these newly purchased ones, and they worked fine!
My dvd drive is a standard OPTIARC AD-7170 that came with the Mac Pro as spec'd.
I am able to burn single layer fine, and dual layers are read. I'm just unable to write dual layer at the moment.
Any ideas? I'm stuck on what to do and what manufacturer's dual layer dvd's will work with this drive. It can just do +R DL.
Could it be I've been unlucky to have had 4 bad batches? I brought 2 x 2 (25 disc) tubs of DataWrite and same by 50 disc tubs Elite M.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Ash
P.s. I have tried creating a new admin user account to see if I am able to burn under that. I get the same errors.
P.p.s. "Hopefully" this is just a media issue and I can find some that works again. If not and it is a drive fault what can I do? What writers spec'd same are available internal for my Mac Pro?

If think you may be using the wrong speed-range media for that drive's capabilities. As I mentioned, there are two ranges, and 8X media cannot be written in a 2.4x (sometimes referred to as 4x) drive.
When you get an error message that actually tells you something concrete, you should listen to it:
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
... is pretty unambiguous. It's a problem with the Media.
Off-Brand media is the next weak link in the chain. One of their many problems is that they vary wildly from batch to batch. Verbatim media are thought to be the "gold standard". Get a small number of Verbatim Media and see if you can make ONE master on the best in the market. If you can, the problem is in the Media. If you can NOT, the problem is in the process.
Like I mentioned I have never had issue with Elite M before, and I always set Toast to burn "Best" under the recorder settings.

Detailed instructions on how to create multi-session CD-Rs can be found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=160588
It should work on CD-RWs as well.
It is not possible to create multi-session DVDs when using minus media: There is no standard for that.
Creating multi-session DVDs on plus media will work, but it requires additional software (The only one I'm aware of is DragonBurn, Toast can't do the trick afaik).

  • Cant burn DL+R DVD media with 20" iSight iMac

Apple spec pages say this system's superdrive can do DL+R, System Profiler/Disk Burning/DVD Write sometimes says DL+R, but most of the time it just lists -R, -RW.
I'm trying to burn with Toast 7. Toast sees the DL media, and claims the drive will burn DL+R, but when I go to burn it just gets stuck on "Preparing" and never actually burns. Cant completely kill the application and must restart the iMac to eject the media.

I have the same problem. I have just bought DVD Creator from MP4Converter Software Studio. And it works great with DVD-R 4.7Gb disks. But when I try to burn DVD+R DL disks they eject after about 50 seconds and I get a prompt "Burn failed". I have tried saving the files as both DVD Folder and DVD Image but the result is the same for both. I bought DVD+R DL because that is what is specified in my System Profiler.

  • Unable to burn an HD DVD in HD.264 format

When I attempt to burn a DVD with an H.264 10.3Mbps file using DVD Studio Pro I get the following message:  "VIDEO_TS folder found in Build Location ....The Build Location folder contains a VIDEO_TS folder(standard DVD content).  You must remove the VIDEO_TS folder from the Build Location in order to proceed with Build/Format of a HD DVD project."  The H.264 file includes both video and audio, and is a Quicktime movie.  If this doesn't work, is there an HD selection in compressor that will allow a 1080i video suitable for DVD?  I'm unable to find a VIDEO_TS folder linked to this video anywhere on my hard drive.

Well, you first need to know that an HD DVD will only play on one of three things:  1) A Mac with a Superdrive.  2) A Toshiba HD DVD player...but those have been discontinued as they lost the battle to BluRay.  3) An XBOX 360.
It won't play on regular DVD players...nor BluRay players.  If you want a DVD to play on a regular DVD player, you need to use the DVD BEST QUALITY presets...and know that it'll be standard definition, not high definition.  If you want BluRay...you need to get BluRay authoring software, and a BluRay burner.
You can use Compressor to author a BluRay playable disc...it just needs to be under 30-40 min...

  • Opinion sought on burning AVCHD to DVD

I just completed my first 95 minute FCE movie in AVCHD only to be unpleasantly surprised to find that iDVD either does not support it, or does a very poor job on the material. So I read, for I have not tried it. For many reasons, I would like to commit my movie to DVDs.
Most posts I read recommend I buy Roxio and convert my movie to Blu-Ray. I don't mind buying Roxio, but I have no wish to buy a Blu-Ray player and then suggest to family and friends that they do the same in order to watch my masterpieces.  Especially since I hear everywhere, some comments dating back to 2008, that Blu-Ray is dying. Certainly my local store, which used to have floor to ceiling Blu Ray equipment, has nary a Blu Ray in sight.
One post led me to Daniusoft, and they claim that a few easy steps will turn my AVCHD into a DVD I can be proud of. Have any of our experts had experience with these good people, or can you recommend some-one reliable who has similar software?
I would appreciate a life line.  Thanks.

    >As to your first paragraph, is that something that Daniusoft or Roxio can do for me?
Not sure what you're asking.  I'm not at all familiar with Daniusoft, but Roxio's Toast application is great utility for burning all types of discs; Blu-ray, DVD, CD ... and even for creating disc images.
If you're referring to my comment about some DVD players having the ability to upscale, that isn't done with software, it's a task of the DVD player.
    >I notice that the DVDs I receive from NetFlix have no Blu-Ray or similar appellation on them, nor do I have anything special in the way of a DVD player, but the pictures are as sharp as a celluloid collar.
Commercial releases are produced using top-of-the-line equipment with great lighting.  Good lighting and a good lens are the keys to getting the best quality image.  If you start with an excellent image you're going to end up with a better than what consumer/prosumer or even typical broadcast gear can achieve.  Plus, when they encode and compress for DVD, they utilize very high end hardware encoders that do a much better job of compression than is available to the casual user. And those discs are duplicated (stamped) instead of replicated (burned).

  • Unable to burn movie to DVD without theme

I created a movie on iMovie and would like to create a DVD without any of the themes offered in iDVD. Don't know or unable to do so.
I finally settled on a theme with one drop zone. However, the trimmed clips I created in iMovie when dropped to the drop zone are untrimmed. I deleted the trimmed sections from the iMovie trash. Still it insists on transfering the whole silly clip. Don't have Quicktime Pro so can't do editing there. Any suggestions before I go crazy over this 4 minute movie!
    Max

If you have a copy of Toast 7 you can do it. Create your DVD in iDVD (or in Toast if you like) and save it as a disc image. Open the disc image then select the option in Toast to convert a DVD from a VIDEO_TS folder. You'll then find there's an option to burn the main feature only. Select that and burn a DVD. Worked fine the last time I tried it - when you put the DVD in your DVD player it'll automatically play the movie and stop when it gets to the end which, I think, is what you want to do. The only two downers are that (a) it's a two stage process and (b) you need to buy a copy of Toast. It's really silly that iDVD won't let you do this but then quite a lot about iDVD is silly anyway.

  • Unable to burn a DL DVD with iDVD 5.0.1 (626)!!!

    Hello all!
Twice today I encountered the following issue.
6.5 GB long iDVD project, intended to be burned on a DL-DVD (Memorex Double Layer DVD+R, 8.5 GB, 2.4X) with my iMac G5 20", 2GB RAM, more than 160 GB remaining on hard disk; this computer normally burns DL-DVDs on DVD+R, as written in the user manual.
Okay, I let the software encode the project, meanwhile have a walk and when I'm back, the disk is ejected, and iDVD hung with a window telling the "recording is finished", still "thermometer", and a useless "Cancel" button; the rolling color wheel is also here. Force quit shows that iDVD doesn't respond.
And the ejected disk remains blank! So I guess iDVD hung after encoding, and didn't burn.
The project doesn't need any resources located on another CD or DVD.
I disabled all other apps to gain resource space, but no way.
I read it was a bad idea to burn from a disk image, because Disk Utility doesn't manage DL-DVDs...
    Did I miss something?
    Thanx a lot!

    Memorex Double Layer DVD+R, 8.5 GB, 2.4X
I would suggest Verbatim DVD+R DL. Memorex single-layer has a bad track record here...
I read it was a bad idea to burn from a disk image, because Disk Utility doesn't manage DL-DVDs...
I don't think that's true. Try it. I've used Toast 6 with a disk image from DVD Studio Pro. That worked fine.

  • Unable to Burn DVD due to Verification Failure

I am trying to make a backup copy of my Leopard Install DVD. It is a 7.2 GB file so I used Disk Utility to make a disk image of the DVD, then tried to burn the disk image to a Sony DVD+R Dual Layer disk (8.5 GB). Everything seemed to be working just fine, the burn process completed but at the very end I got an error message stating: Unable to burn "MAC OS X Install DVD Copy" (verification of the burn failed)
Is this a factor of the media used or something else? The disk image I created on my desktop appears to be fully functional. I put a copy of the disk image on a backup drive but I would prefer to have it on DVD media if possible.

    Hi Howwow,
Yes I was stuck with Sony DVD+R DLs tonight but thought I would try one anyway. I have to use a Dual Layer DVD due to the file size. From my reading on these forums it seems the DVD+R DLs are recommended. Single Layer DVDs seems to favor DVD-R for burning. I have heard that the Verbatim brand seems to burn well with consistency. I will try to locate some Verbatim DLs of both types tomorrow unless anyone has other specific suggested media or reasons for the verification failure.
    Thanks for the input.

  • I get an error  at 99% of the burn when trying  burn avchd movie to dvd

I have had premiere elements 10 for a few months and starting about a week ago I have been getting an error while trying to burn video to a dvd disc in avchd format.
I have used several different discs but the error always occurs at 99% of the burn stage. The buring just stops no matter how long I wait. I can still burn avchd disc using the video browser program that came with my cannon vixia hd camera.I don't have any problems burning video to dvd in standard format. I am a novice at this judging by what I have read in the forums. My computer is relatively new hp running windows 7 premium  home 64 bit. To the best of my knowledge nothing has changed on the computer,
and I have plenty of memory.

    David,
    Thank you for that information.
    First two thoughts:
What brand and type of blank media are you using?
Have you checked for updates for your multi-drive/burner's firmware?
Both of those can impact the success of a burn.
As a test, I would Burn to Folder, then use a utility, such as ImgBurn (free and great), to see if this is a media, burner or perhaps PrE issue.
Good luck, and please let us know a bit more,
    Hunt

  • Unable to burn DVD's

I own a PowerMac G4 with combo drive, 768 SDRAM running Tiger 10.4.3. Purchased a LaCie d2 DVD RW external burner to save my Quicktime movies made with iMovie. Using the software included Toast 6, I am unable to burn a DVD. Numerous calls to tech support over a 2 1/2 month period yielded no help. I returned the unit and received a new one. Same error messages on both units.
" Connection not stable" "Disk failed to be written". I changed the ports on both the computer and burner as well as purchasing a new firewire cable. No change. The only disk that I was able to burn 2 months ago was very pixilated.
    Anyone else have this problem?
    Any suggestions?
Sorry for the length of the post, but I tried to include as much info as possible
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Make sure you've installed the most recent Toast update from Roxio.com. If yours is Toast 6 Lite, the current version is 6.1. If it is Toast 6 Titanium it is 6.1.1. Those are required for Macs running 10.4.x.
I believe your error message may be due to poor-quality media. Most often this message appears when using DL media other than Verbatim DVD+R DL. Try using a different brand of quality media.
Another possibility is that your Mac has an OS problem related to its Firewire. These usually can be fixed by downloading and applying Apple's 10.4.4 combined system updater (even though you are already using 10.4.4).
LaCie has a firmware update on its support site. Download and apply it to update the drive's firmware. If the drive doesn't need updating the firmware updater will tell you so. Firmware updates typically increase the brands and speeds of media that the drive will burn to successfully.

  • Unable to Burn Anything to Dual Layer DVD

    Greetings,
I have a new Memorex MRX-530LE dual layer burner, and I have verified that I do have the latest firmware from the manufacturer.
I am able to burn dual-layer DVDs with no difficulty using NERO. I am unable to burn a dual-layer DVD backup with iTunes 8. I have verified this with two different brands of DVD+R9 (DL) media, and I have verified that I am easily able to burn backups using single-layer DVD-5 media.
Can anyone verify whether iTunes 8 supports dual-layer at all? I have searched the forum and find nothing more recent than 2006, and am hoping that others have now experienced my situation, since DL media and burners are common today.
Best regards and thanks in advance,
    Scott

Hi. I am having the same problem. I have already done one backup and I want to do an incremental backup, but when I insert the DL+ disc it tells me that I will need 14 disc. My itunes is only 6.5 gigs?
    I think it's a bug.

  • Unable to Burn a DVD

I am unable to select any files to burn. I am choosing Disk Utility when inserting a blank DVD. A Disk Utility window opens and shows three drives. One of them is the optical drive. If I click on the "Burn" button, the Select Image to Burn window opens but no files can be selected, they are grey'd out and the "Burn" button on the lower right hand corner is grey too and never becomes selectable.
I am the only user and my account is admin. I've tried two different media but that doesn't seem to be where the root cause is. What's going on? I thought Apple computers were intuitive, I can't believe I'm that stupid. I've searched the Help Viewer but the text does not match what I see when I insert the blank disk. It says that once you insert the media and you've chosen the app. you want to burn with, a disc icon should appear on your desktop. I never see this icon. It then says to double click on it, which should open a window and then drag your files to be burnt to this window. Seems pretty straight forward to me but that's simply not what I'm seeing.
    Any help is much appreciated.
