PrE8 very slow?  Am I missing something?

Hi everyone,
I just recently upgraded from Premiere Elements 4 to 8 on a newly built computer.  I have been fairly disappointed so far with PrE8 and wondering if I am missing something / optimizations that would make it work (and work efficiently) on my computer.
My computer: i7 930 oc'd to 4ghz (stable, stressed with prime95, used for a month), 12GB ram, GTX460x2 SLI with latest Nvidia drivers, 250 GB SSD boot/program drive / used for scratch disk, and a 2 TB Raid10.
PrE8 was upgraded to 8.01 already.  It starts up just fine.  The problem comes when I am trying to encode a simple project to burn to dvd.  I am just putting together numerous video clips to burn into a single double layer dvd.  File size about 7 GB.  Firstly, the encoding seems awfully slow.  PrE is the only program running and it is taking (4+) hours.  Looking at the task manager, PrE8 doesn't even seem to stress my system when encoding.  It is using only 2 cores with max 25% cpu utilization.  I have the affinity set to all cores and increased priority for the process to high with no difference.  This is no better than when I was using PrE4 to encode on my Duo-Core 2.8ghz, 4gb laptop.  I was hoping to save some time with encoding by building the new system but so far very disappointed.  Is it because PrE8 is poorly threaded or am I missing something.
Ben

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your answers and suggestions.  I'll clarify / rephrase my question.  The program itself works.  Every device driver has been updated previously.  My issue is that PrE8.01 does not seem to use all / most of my system's resources when encoding / exporting a video.  I understand that having other programs / antivirus running, fragmented hard-drive (ssd scratch disk and fresh 2 TB Raid 10 drive), different codecs, size, etc. can bog a system down and use up resources but when it only uses 2 physical cpu cores (+2 virtual cores) of a quad core system and only at 25% utilization max of those two physical cores with everything running and I wait 4+ hours to encode a 7 GB collection of 720x480 avi's, I cannot help but wonder how much faster and time saving it would be if it used all 4 physical cores at 100% ulitization.
My question is am I missing something in that it only uses a fraction of my system's resources instead of all that is available?  When you are working on your projects, is PrE8.01 using all your system's resources (100% utilization)?  I can understand PrE8.01 being slow if my system is old, bottlenecked, and struggling along at 100% resource utilization but that isn't the case.  Maybe PrE8 doesn't use more than 2 cpu cores?  But one would think it would at least stress those two cores a bit more than just 25%.
Sincerely,
Ben

Use a WiFi connection instead... or download them using iTunes on your computer, then sync them to the phone.

  • Agonizingly Slow: am I missing something?

I'm a Mac fan, have several about the house. I recently decided to try upgrading my iPhoto library to Aperture. The library contains about 14,500 images.
    I'm running a quad-core 2.5GHz G5 PowerMac with 5GB DDR2 ram, and the PCI express Radeon X1900 display adapter.
Importing the iPhoto library took many hours (the first two times it appeared to have hung up, as the import seems to get slower as it nears the end of the roll-set. I have 255 iPhoto rolls; by about 230, it took many minutes to import each roll, even if it only had 5 pictures in it, and it appeared to be necessary to "budge" Aperture by clicking around in its window to force it to make progress.
Once I got a complete import, I was disappointed to see that every operation in the library, or within an Event in the library, was torture. Spinning Pizza at nearly all times: between rolls, between images, and scrolling the image thumbnail panel was somewhat less than interactive (charitably put).
I've never had an experience quite like this one so I'm giving Apple the benefit of the doubt here. For example, the new iLife '08 upgrade to iPhoto is excellent--it seems to be greatly speeded up!
Perhaps I should stick to iPhoto, then, though I was looking forward to the light table, version management and especially multiple-vault support, since my library of photos is very important to me (even though I'm just an amateur).
The one thing I can think of as the problem is that I have the X1900 GT card built for PowerPC Macs vs. the X1900 XT card mentioned in the installation notes. Though it's hard to imagine that accounts for the whole problem; surely a 4x2.5GHz machine is not obsolete yet!?
Any thoughts appreciated; thanks very much.

There are three likely reasons for a big slowdown:
    1. Previews are being generated. Turn them off.
    http://www.bagelturf.com/aparticles/previews/index.html
    2. Thumbnails are being generated. You're stuck with that.
    3. Antivirus. Turn it off if you have it.
    4. Combination of G5s and graphics card is maxing out something (bus, disk, RAM).

  • Android app very slow - is this just something to put up with?

    Hi,
We have created an Android version of an existing iPad dps app & folio, and even though we have removed features unsupported by Android, it still runs really (painfully) slowly compared to iPad.
We've seen discussions that this is a general issue with the Air-based Android viewer app, and there's little that can be done.  Is this so?
We've also seen rumours that there is a new android viewer app due at some point soon, that will sort out the performance.  Is this so?   It would be useful to know anticipated release date so we can communicate this to clients - it will help appease them.
    Many thanks,
    Paul

Hi Neil, good to hear. Do you have any plans on when we should be hearing more about the native android viewer? Not sure if you have read this ( http://forums.adobe.com/message/5773513) , but new Android tablets with x86 based processors are performing very poorly compared to ARM based Android devices (and iPad). We have customers who are getting very impatient and we dont know what to tell them. Any guidance or advice/timelines Adobe can provide would be very helpful to calm customer concerns.

    Hi,
the plan isn't showing any problem (the cost isn't high) so it's not possible to use it to troublehshoot the query. Please provide more information: 4-digit Oracle version, and depending on the version, either SQL real-time monitor report or dbms_xplan output with rowsource stats (option "iostats last" after running your sql with ALTER SESSION SET STATISTICS_LEVEL = ALL).
Also, when reporting a performance problem it would be wise to avoid expressions like "very, very slow" replacing them with something more useful like "my query is taking 2.5 hours to retrieve 30k rows".
    Best regards,
    Nikolay

  • Command to retrieve open fields VERY slow. To_Number ??

    Hi Everyone,
I added a command to my report. It is running VERY slow. Is there something innefficient about this code such as converting the key string SY_KEY1 to a number?
    SELECT
    to_number(SY_KEY1) AS MAP_LOC_NBR,
        SELECT SY_VALUE FROM SY_OPN_FLD_VALUE S2 WHERE S2.SY_OPEN_LBL = 'CT Type' AND S2.SY_KEY1 = S1.SY_KEY1
      ) CT_TYPE,
        SELECT SY_VALUE FROM SY_OPN_FLD_VALUE S2 WHERE S2.SY_OPEN_LBL = 'PT Type' AND S2.SY_KEY1 = S1.SY_KEY1

    FROM
      SY_OPN_FLD_VALUE S1
    WHERE
      SY_TBL_NAME = 'ServiceLoc'
    GROUP BY
      SY_KEY1

Getting rid of the inline queries helped the performance further. Still, with this block, I'm only retrieving 1500 records in 10 minutes... @28k, that's still a long time to run.

could the launch agents failing slow the computer or they just don't work. I mean I am willing to upgrade ram but not if there is good chance it won't change speed much. Also to downgrade is it necessary to format the hard drive?

  • Am I missing something?  USB Ethernet appears to be much slower than wifi.

System = Macbook Air early 2010
    OSX = Mavericks
Have been using wifi to backup via time machine to windows 7 SMB network share.
Expected to see much faster backup times when ethernet attached using the Apple USB Ethernet dongle but the backup times seem much slower.  Am I missing something here?  Anyone else with experience of ethernet versus wifi for intranet/local network data transfers?
    Thanks,

Csound1 - My tests have indicated you are correct.  Had not done the match before acquring the dongle.  Seems like a waste of money unless you don't have access to wifi.

  • Very slow i-tunes 7.1. Should i take an older version? Or something else?

I-tunes upgraded itself to version 7.1
Since the 7 version (i think) my i-tunes is very slow. It takes 10 seconds when i click on a song to get it played. Besides that I installed some new anti-virussoftware (NOD32, Spysweeper). Is it possible that this new version makes your computer slower and would it help to get an older version of i-tunes? I was pretty satisfied with the older versions, but now i am pretty upset. Or is there something else i should do? I think my computer should be able to work this.
    Some spec's:
    P4 / 2.6 ghz
    1 Gb on RAM
200 Gb of files (use it all day long, so its pretty irritating)

Upgrading to Vista gives problems. There is another topic on that subject. Maybe you can find a solution over there. I still have XP and still am wondering what causes the problem. I see that I-tunes takes a lot of memory (up to 200Mb). IS that different in the older versions?
    Thanx again!

  • Mail has become very, very slow.  Do I have a provider problem or is there something I can do with my Mac to speed it up?

Mail has become very, very slow.  Do I have a provider problem or is there something I can do with my Mac?

Couple of steps. One is general housekeeping and the other is performance related.
If you have an extremely large number of messages in your inbox(es) or sent categories, consider the ones that remain relevant and purge those that are not. Do this regularly. Choose the Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items > In All Accounts...
Afterwards, you can start by rebuilding your Mailbox indexes within your individual mail accounts. For each Account in the left panel of Mail under Inbox, select it, and then from Mailbox menu, choose Rebuild (bottom of menu). When you are done, exit and restart Mail.
    Still slow?

  • Dock is missing and Mac is very, very slow????

    Hello,
I am having a problem with my Mac at the moment.
It is very slow to start up - or to do anything in fact - and the Dock is missing!!! I am only able to open the Finder Window but I cannot access anything else because everything is so slow.
I have tried restarting, but the computer doesn't shut down unless I force it to with the power button.
Also, the Dock preferences - such as Hiding and Postition - are not ticked and I cannot change them.
    Can somebody please help?

  • Motherboard tampered with? Missing RAM? Very slow

I took my mid-2012 MacBook to be repaired a few weeks ago. The repair place told me the motherboard had failed, however I then took it to an Apple re-seller and they informed me that just the harddrive was broken. The first place initially left the wrong harddrive in my laptop and had installed an older version of OS on it, but the Apple resellers then wiped it, putting the latest version of OS X on it. I'm worried the first people may have tampered with other aspects of my computer seeing as it has been running very slow ever since I got it back. Is there any way to tell if the processor has been changed without taking the computer apart?
Also, just now I've realsied, when I open up "System Information" it's saying there's only 2GB http://imgur.com/EKuszZP, even though the computer came with 4GB http://imgur.com/tSdlRz7 - is there another explantion for this besides them having removed some RAM?
There are no apps on the computer at the moment, all my files are still in a recovered folder on the desktop. The computer also makes quiet whirring noises which it didn't make before. OS X 10.8.5.

If I could add to what Kappy said:
There would normally be two 2GB RAM modules in your machine if it came with 4GB. Either one isn't seated correctly or they possibly swapped the RAM to see if that was your problem and didn't put yours back. Between that and swapping your hard drive and not putting yours back, you obviously shouldn't use those guys to work on a Mac again. If it were me, I'd be demanding my original RAM and drive from them.
On the bright side, both of those are cheap and easy to install on a Classic Mac. 8GB of RAM is going to be in the $50 or less range and a 1TB drive if you needed that much would be < $100.
As for the whirring noise, the first question is do you have a CD or DVD in the internal optical drive? That would make a sound like that. The only other moving parts are in the hard drive or the fans.
The Apple Store would be your best bet as an eval is free, but it sounds like you went to a reseller rather than directly to an Apple store. That's why I thought I'd supplement Kappy.
