Precautions for safely upgrading your OS??

Hey there, so I suppose that this question could probably be posted on any of the other OS threads, but since it relates to Tiger I figured I'd try here.
Anyway, I still currently have the last version of Panther running on my Dual 1.25 GHz G4 (yes, old computer, old OS, I'm probably going to try to get an iMac or Powerbook within the year, but for now...), and recently got a copy of Tiger that I was going to upgrade to for the time being.
However, as the drive partition that I'd be installing it to would, ideally, be the SAME one that I currently have Panther on, and I have a LOT of valuable files on there, I just want to make sure that I do so properly, so that none of the personal files I have on there get erased (and I don't need to reinstall all my software).
Fortunately, I DO have an external drive I can back things up to, but there's also a fair amount of software/applications on the current drive that I want to keep, and I just want to be sure that I HAVE to back anything/everything up, or that I'm going to NEED to reinstall all of that software. Obviously, it's been awhile since I've installed a new OS, and when I did so before, I don't think there was much of value on the old drive that I was installing to....
Can someone please advise me? Would it be possible simply to install Tiger to the other partition, and designate that as the boot drive? (and what software/applications could I/would I need to erase on the current boot drive to avoid them interfering with one another??
Granted, this may be a lot safer and less complicated than I'm making it out to be, I just don't want to accidentally erase anything. Thanks!!

I suspect that any regular software you used in Panther will also work in Tiger. It is not like you are going from OS9 to Tiger, or going from Tiger back to Panther with a lot of Tiger software. As I said before, the only things for which I would not use Panther versions are any disk utility or maintenance software. I use Office 2004 with Tiger fine.
Your most important thing to do regardless of whatever upgrades you are doing, is to ensure you have a backup for all your important files and applications. This if for when (not if, but when) your drive has problems. I have two internal drives and a partitioned external. Everything on internal drive #1 goes onto external partition #1, and everything on internal drive #2 goes onto external partition #2. Simple. If I upgrade OS I make sure my backup is up to date and bootable. I then put in the DVD and do the update. If there are any problems I can always revert from my backup. What is making this a bit complicated for me is figuring out what files you have where. If you have unique files distributed on all three partitions it will make it very difficult to use any to make a bootable backup. I guess I'm not following if you have any totally available partions or drives at the moment, and maybe you need to consolidate files. What we're all saying is you should always have a complete duplicate of your main partition/drive.
Really, I'm just looking for the simplest, safest method of upgrading to Tiger. In the past, I installed a new OS to a blank drive, or partition. Now, I have two partitions, and the one with my OS has a lot of valuable personal stuff in my Users folder, and some software (like Office X, Final Draft, Toast 7, and so on) that I'm worried might all have to be installed, or not work with Tiger altogether.
Alternative: If the second partition is pretty much available, clone your current Panther partition to the second partition, then do an update install of tiger on that second partition. Run your computer off the Tiger partition for a few days until you're happy, then remove the stuff from the first partiton.
Admittedly, my external drive--which is Firewire--is formatted with/for OS9 (the OS9 software is actually on the drive, there are even some old OS9 apps I've run off the drive), so my MAIN concern is that I don't back everything up to it, then discover that the internal drive--and all the files I'd backed up to it--won't be recognized on Tiger... that would really suck.
Consolidate your files onto your other partition if you have room, and free up your FW for backup purposes. Tiger and OS9 can use the same HFS+ disk formatting so it isn't that your drive is "formatted" to OS9 (unless you formatted it to HFS which is really, really dated) and OS9 stuff has to be on the FW drive. I have OS9 apps on my Tiger volume. The only small issue may be if you actually boot to OS9 on occasion, but you haven't mentioned that.
So if you have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. I did download that CCC, and don't have a problem using it to copy/backup my current boot drive (I believe there's enough room on my 2nd partition and my external drive to copy a disk image of my existing boot drive/User files over to), but since I don't generally have much experience using Disk imaging software, I'm a bit scared about the possibility of making a mistake.
CCC doesn't use disk images, but if you want to copy a bootable version (we all recommend this version) of your current drive the clone utilities will erase everything on the destination volume which is why you need to have one that can have this done to it. I haven't used SuperDuper so I can't give you specifics on how to use that (SuperDuper is shareware, CCC is free/donation).
I mean, it's SOUNDING like upgrading from Panther to Tiger is a lot more complicated than I'd realized, is that right? Because that does worry me...
Something that would help me at least is to know how big your partitions are in terms of total space, and how much space is occupied on each partition, and also how much of that is unique. The process is actually pretty simple but since your want to do it safely you really need to make a complete backup.

  • Can you trade in your iphone5 for the iphone 6 if you are not eligible for an upgrade?

I want to take advantage of the iphone trade in offer Verizon is offering, can I do this if I am not eligible for an upgrade yet?

    No.
Either wait it out for your upgrade time, or switch to a Verizon Edge plan (you have to turn in your iPhone 5 in lieu of ETF fees).
With Edge, you don't get anything in return for your phone, except out of your current contract.

  • What does "Upgrade Your Device" mean for a VZW customer?

I had a LG Octane and "upgraded" to LG Cosmos at the end of my contract. The Octane does not have a camcorder but the Cosmos did. To me this was a "downgrade." I learned of this "downgrade" after I had the "upgraded" a few weeks. I believe Verizon's use of the term "Upgrade Your Device" is deceptive and a false promise. Verizon representatives refuse to recognize this "upgrade" as a "downgrade." I am stuck with a downgraded phone for more than another year before I can upgrade again without paying the full cost of a phone! So what does "Upgrade Your Device" mean when used on the Webpage of your Verizon Account?

The upgrade is that your new phone has a camcorder. Your old phone did not.
The word upgrade means to me getting a new phone that has features that my old phone didn't have and that i will actually use.

  • Is it possinle to upgrade your hardware on a mac that you have owned for years? (without applecare)

I've owned my macbook for a few years now. apple care has expired and i'm just curious if apple would even accept and older mac for an upgrade. I realize I would need to pay for it, even if I had apple care. I upgraded the hard drive and ram long ago, but I was just curious if they would upgrade something like the processor or graphics card since some of that is sodered directly to the logic board and I have no desire to even attempt that myself.

... I was just curious if they would upgrade something like the processor or graphics card since some of that is sodered directly to the logic board and I have no desire to even attempt that myself.
No. While theoretically possible, replacing the CPU or GPU in a MacBook Pro would require such extensive work that you would need to engineer an entirely new logic board.
Apple already does this for you every year or two.
Hard disks and memory generally become less expensive over time. If you upgrade the RAM and HD you will extend the useful life of your MBP as much as practicable.

Please help me, as I want Creative Cloud site to the next level as soon as possible.

    Hello,
I believe this question was already answered via ticket #57102 - please see my response to that ticket for further details regarding the needed steps.
What I was trying to explain in my previous reply is that you can upgrade any Creative Cloud site directly through each site's admin area, not necessarily through the link mentioned on the promo page...
If you still have login issues with your Adobe ID (the updated email address) please access adobe.com -> Sign in -> Trouble signing in? to reset your password.
Please try that and let us know if that worked.

  • HT4809 I have an iMac running OS X v10.5.8.  The processor is a 2GHz Intel Core 2 duo.  Can I safely upgrade to Lion OS?

I'd like to upgrade my operating system on my iMac.  Like I said, I have an iMac running OS X v10.5.8.  The processor is a 2GHz Intel Core 2 duo.  Can I safely upgrade to Lion OS?

You will need SL (10.6.8) to download and install from the App Store. You can buy a thumb drive with Lion and by-pass the SL install, but you are not saving any money by doing it that way.
Mountain Lion comes out next month. Just in case you want to wait. And be aware that neither Lion or Mountain Lion will run PPC applications.
Your computer may pass, but check here for full requirements.

  • How can I upgrade my iCloud account's storage but pay for the upgrade with another Apple ID?

I want to upgrade my iCloud account so that I can back-up my iPhone, however I would like to pay for the upgrade using a different Apple ID than the Apple ID associated with my iCloud account. I can not figure out how to do this, when I hit buy after selecting my desired plan it wants be the buy the upgrade with the Apple ID my iCloud account uses. Please help!

I don't think that's possible.  (If you're trying to get it on another credit card, one option would be to purchase an iTunes gift card with it and redeem it to create an iTunes store credit.  Storage upgrades will first charge your iTunes store credit before charging your card.)

  • Memory modules can we use for RAM upgrade of HP Pavilion dv5-1198de??

What memory modules can we use for RAM upgrade of HP Pavilion dv5-1198de??
    Max RAM?  Vista?  Windows 7?

I can't find a dv5-1198de but I did find a dv5-1198er which should be similiar. It states up to 8 gb of ram. HERE
I would try www.Crucial.com for suggested memory ,you can use their Scanner Tool to let it detect what you have and what you can upgrade/replace with.

  • IPhoto asks for an upgrade of Aperture and otherwise won't open

After upgrade to Maverick, iPhoto asks for an upgrade of Aperture (which I don't have and never had), and otherwise won't open. If I click "ok",  the Applications store opens and asks me to BUY Aperture (69,99 EUR).
There must be a bug in iPhoto 11 after the upgrade to Maverick..?

I can only guess at a couple of solutions:
    #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion delete the contents the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
    #2
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

I tried to download the upgrade, now it won't install and I can not access my documents. It said Vi did not have enough space for the upgrade so I made room but still no luck. If I delete the ap and reinstall I will lose my stuff. Any ideas? It won't open so I can email it to myself.

  • Using another number for an upgrade for a phone online

Okay, so I'd like to use another phone number in my plan to get an upgrade online. So does anyone know if that is possible and how I could do that. Thanks.

Thanks, Rignu217 and lewisr13, for your replies.
    Hello JBerg,
I'm glad to hear you'll be taking advantage of an alternate upgrade on your lines.  As previously mentioned, this can be done directly from My Verizon, where you can compare up to five devices and decide which device is perfect for you. Keep in mind you'll first select the line that is eligible for an upgrade.  Once this is done you will get an option to choose the line where the device will be activated. I'm sure you'll find this information useful. Thanks for being part of Verizon Wireless.

  • I have CS2 and am interested in buying CS4,or CS5, or CS5.5 used. Will my serial number from my CS2 work for an upgrade version?

Like to own hard copy CS at the cheapest possible price.
CS2 will not work with Lion.
I'm looking at used CS4 upgrade discs that are for sale.
Will my serial number from my CS2 work for the upgrade?

There are no upgrade paths from CS2.
If you purchased used software you're pretty much on your own. Much of what is sold on places like eBay or Craigs List doesn't have valid licenses. Caveat emptor.
