Preexisting Harddrives will not mount! Help!
Hi all!
After reinstalling solaris8 OS, I now can not see the two drive towers in order to mount them. The drives were previously mounted and functioning perfectly before the reinstall. I have re-edited the vfstab file but for some reason the OS will not see those drives. The two internal drives mounted just fine. Am i missing a file that needs to be edited? Do I need to tell the OS/machine to recognize those scsi ports the towers are attached to? (and if so, how...?)
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

First see if "format" sees the drives. If not, you need to execute the "boot -r from the ok or prompt "touch /reconfigure" at OS level. If you still don't see the drives then verify visability from ok prompt "probe-scsi-all". If at ok prompt you can't see disk them you have a hardware problem.

I have precisely the same problem. The Mac mini will not see the iPhone in iTunes, Disk Utility or Image Capture. My MacBook Air, with a different iTunes library cannot see it either but they can both see my iPad & iPods.
I have tried restarting the computer with only the iPhone connected via USB. No help. I do not see the point in re-loading iTunes if my other machine cannot see it but can see other iOS devices.
All software is up to date on machines & iOS devices. -
My Ipod 4th Gen will not mount into Itunes
Please anyone with technical knowledge HELP ME.
The basic problem is that my 4th Generation Ipod will not mount into Itunes.
Let me tell you what I have done so far this includes all the R's, I have also followed the advice of reinstalling itunes and Quicktime I have also tried backwards installing to version 6 (at present I have upgraded to version 7.0.2). The ipod is visible in Windows and I still am able to use it as disk as I have programs I am using off it.
I have tried a fifth gen and also an Ipod mini and both mount onto my Itunes.
I have tried to reinstall the Ipod software, however the previous ipod updates do not work and as the Ipod cannot be mounted I cannot use Itunes to update it as it is not visible.
I have also run the Ipod Diagnostic in Itunes and everything seems fine (I have included the report if anyone can please understand it)and at the very bottom it states that the Ipod is truly Mounted. WELL ITS NOT
I really am getting desperate now as this is the same on both my Desktop and Laptop and I am getting very close to throwing the whole thing out along with all the rest of my computer equipment.

It appears to be truly mounted.If anyone is interested I managed to solve this problem by reformatting the ipod as a mac ipod, with the help of friends system. This does get rid of the music but as I had it backed up wasn't a problem. I then plugged the mac Ipod back into a windows pc and reformatted it as a windows ipod which updated the firmware correctly and have'nt had a problem since.

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my LaCie USB 3 drive will not mount
I just upgraded my OS to 10.8 and now my LaCie P'9230 USB 3.0 external drive will not mount. I have re-installed the USB driver and re-booted the computer and drive several times to no avail; any ideas/help?

It's my understanding that LaCie hasn't released a Mountain Lion driver for their PCIe card yet. Sonnet uses a modified version of the LaCie driver and theirs is dead in the water too for that reason-they also warn that their driver won't work with 10.7.5 when it's released.
Indeed, yesterday I pulled the Sonnet USB 3.0 card from my Mac Pro and replaced it with a CalDigit card from OWC; CalDigit has separate drivers for 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 and I can say that the card works with all three, the first time in 1.5 years that I've had a reliable USB 3.0 connection. -
My external backup drive will not mount. I have tried to mount it in Disk Utility via the app and the command prompt but the attempt times out. Any suggestions?
I backed up my HD the day before dropping off my Mac for repair, and then tried again just before going to my appointment. During this last and final backup my Macbook Air crashed. I have since discovered that the drive will no longer mount, likely due to the crash that occured during the last attempted backup. I am unsure if the drive can be repaired.
My logic board was short circuiting some where that controls the headphone jack. Initially this prevented me from using the jack but eventually caused my mac to crash several times before I brought it in for repair. I believe that it is the this crashing that is responsible for my back up not being accessible but that my data may still be intact.
Thanks for any help you may have!If possible, attach it to another Mac and see if it is recognized in Disk Utility. If so, run Disk Utility>First Aid. If not, the HDD may be damaged.

Disk Images will not mount and Disk Utility will not runru
I am having some major problems with Disk Utility, Disk Images, and software update. First, Disk utility will not open or run. When I double-click the application icon, nothing happens, no message, nothing. I am running OSX 10.4.11. I have deleted diskutility prefs. I am able to run Disk Utility from the Startup DVD of Tiger. On first run, it verified and repaired permissions. I run verify and repair permissions several more times from Startup DVD and everything is fine. But Disk Utility on my startup HD will not work. Similary, NONE of my disk images will mount. No matter what Disk Image i try to mount, nothing will. And I cannot use Disk utility to mount them! So, no matter what I download, no images will mount. And thirdly, when I try to run software update, it will not work. I do get a message: it says, "Could not load Software Update." Finally, i tried to download Onyx to delete log files, etc.. but again, the disk image will not mount. I was able to install a dashboard widget called "maintidget" and was successful in running the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks. Can anyone help? Everything else works fine!!! All apps! Safari, Mail, iTunes, MS Office, everything works fine. Thanks for ANY help!
Previously, I had run verify permissions, repair permissions multiple times(from startup DVD) - no probems found. Deleted disk utility prefs. Run the maintenance taskes (daily, weekly, monthly). Nothing worked. But, I forget to check the drive for problems. So I ran disk scan. It found "invalid node" and repair disk could not do it. So, do I erase and do a fresh install or get DiskWarrior? I am running Leopard so I do not have Time Machine but I have backed up my documents, iTunes Library, iPhoto Library, etc... Another thing I found out the hardway is to sync all your bookmarks, mail settings and messages, etc... with .mac if you have an account. Any more suggetions?

I just bought new-to-me mac mini running OSX mavericks.
Trying to migrate from old mac mini using simpletech external hard drive.
It still mounts on my old mac mini (system 10.5) but will not mount or show up when I plug it in to the new mac mini running mavericks.

We were thinking along the same lines. While at home I dug up a firewire enclosure and put a bootable GUID formatted drive in it (that I had in one of the usb enclosures) and started her computer holding down the option key and then chose to boot from the external firewire. All usb drives are now mounting upon connection. I asume that her drive has bad sectors on it (even though the SMART status says it's OK) and is not loading all the drivers properly for USB to mount. I was suspicious from the beginning that the OS was corrupt when she first had me look at it. It was at that point that I booted it in target mode, connected to my Macbook Pro, and then CCC'd to a usb drive that I had. I then had a couple of difficulties installing the new OS. Should have known......
I am now going to put a new drive in it for her and she'll be up and running.

External Hard drive will not mount on Macbook Air (mid-2011) OSX 10.9.4

Needs some help resolving this issue. External hard drive (Toshiba v63600-C) will not mount anymore on my mothers-in-law's macbook air. She notice this problem starting on the Aug 6th. You can see it in the Disk Utility but is not mounted. I can get the her ext hard drive to mount on my Macbook Pro with no problem. I also tried my personal ext hard drive (Seagate) on her Macbook Air and it will not mount. Not sure what is going on here. Any help is appreciated in resolving this issue.

So unless you can come up with much stronger evidence to the contrary, I doubt that your feeling are going to carry any weight at all.

Ok my Lacie HDs will not mount at all anymore through my fire wire 400 ports. i have been back and forth with Apple and Lacie with this issue for months and nobody can find the issue. Heres the deal. When I bring my HDs to the Apple store and they plug them in to another computer they mount just fine. So I brought my whole system into the Apple store and ofcourse my HDs would not mount on my computer. So they tried to mount the HDs they had and they worked just fine. Mounting on USB works just fine also. So Apple tested my firewire ports and according to Apple my firewire ports are operating fine. But something is not operating fine. The tech at Apple told me that since I have 2 Lacie HDs plugged in on the same firewire bus its possible that my Mac (G4) can not tell the difference between the 2 drives and that would make them not mount at all. He also thought it would be a good idea for me to get a firewire card so my drives would be seperated and they can work on completely on 2 different busses. I have tried everything you could think of to try and get these drives to mount. I have tried to mount them one at a time, I have tried different power supplies, and firewire cords, nothing is working. Help me out..
Open up those LaZee drives and remove the HDs.
Then you can get one of these remounting kits (or anything similar and compatible):

External USB drives will not mount under Mountain Lion
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, two external USB2 drives that I have will not mount and cannot be viewed in the Finder. The same occurs on a 2012 MacBook Air, a 2009 iMac 27 and a 2010 MacMini, all running OS X Mountain Lion version 10.8.2.
Both drives are Samsung Story external USB drives (one is 1.5 GB and the other is 2 GB) and both have been formatted using Mac Disk Utility with a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition, one using Snow Leopard and the other with Lion.
Both still mount correctly on a friends MacBook Pro that is still running Snow Leopard, and I had no problem with the same drives under Lion. Interestingly both can also be connected to Time Capsule USB port and show up correctly.
Both drives mount correctly under Windows 7 on BootCamp partitions that I have on both the 2012 MacBook Air, a 2009 iMac 27. These BootCamp partitions have Paragon HFS+ installed so I can read Mac formated drives.
Both drives show up in Disk Utility, but when attempt to mount the drives I get the message "The disk could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and retry mounting." I can run Repair in First Aid on the disk and get the message that the volume appears OK, but again have the same problem when I attempt to mount the disk.
I have also tried using Disk Utility 3,2, but still cannot mount the drives, though the program indicates there is no problem with the drives.
I have other portable USB including a Samsung portable USB2 drive, and two external USB3 drives, and I don't have problems with them.
There is clearly a problem with Mountain Lion with accessing (mounting) these Samsung Story USB drives, and the problem appears to be with Mountain Lion itself as the problem did not occur on the same Macs with Lion and does not occur with Bootcamp partitions on the machines.
I have a lot of time searching forums, but I have not found anyone with an identical problem.

External disks will not mount on new OS install
Hi,
I just had to reformat and reinstall all the OS and applications on a imac g5 for a friend of mine. I have updated all the os to 10.5.8 and have installed user software iWork, iLife, Microsoft office and Roxio's Toast 10 and a family history software called Reunion. That is all that has been done to this new install.
I went to transfer her personal files back and I can't get any external disks to mount. They will all show in disk utility but will not mount the desktop. I have tried 2 different drives formatted in Mac OS Exteded Journalled as well as MS-Dos Fat32. I have also tried flash drives formatted in each of these formats. All of these drives are readable on several other computers I have here, including a 2008 Macbook Pro running Lion, 2010 iMac running Snow Leopard as so on.
When inserted in the iMac G5 I can see all the drives in disk utiltiy and was able to even erase and reformat a drive to differnt format ( mac extended to Fat32) without issues to mount on the other computers.
Cd's mount just fine.
Anyone have any clues as to what's going on? Any thoughts are most welcome.

It was at that point that I booted it in target mode, connected to my Macbook Pro, and then CCC'd to a usb drive that I had. I then had a couple of difficulties installing the new OS. Should have known......
I am now going to put a new drive in it for her and she'll be up and running.

We have much the same issue as others here in other threads have spoken about - after a reboot a raid volume will not mount.
Disk Utility can 'see' the drive and array, but will not mount it. RAID Admin reports no problems. I tried updating the firmware to no avail.
Then I tried a new FC card in the server, a different controller card in the xRAID, different cables and connecting the FC cable to a different XServe. No mount with any of these attempts.
XServe 2 ea 2.3Ghz G5, 2GB RAM, 1 80GB drive (cluster node config)
OSX Server 10.3.9
7 ea 180GB drives, RAID5; 1 TB array
RAID Admin 1.5 (controller firmware - now: 1.5/1.50f)
Any ideas what to try next? And no we don't have 100% backups, close but no... ;-( so any ideas worth trying appreciated!

We recently had a similar problem. We have an XServe RAID fully populated -- split into 2 volumes. One volume would mount the other would not (after a reboot). Tried swapping fibre channel cables, re-seating fibre channel cards, etc. Our solution was replacing the PCI-Fibre card in the XServe.
Another thing we have had happen is, after reboot, one volume mounts and the other mounts about 15 mins later -- after completing fsck.

Firewire drives will not mount
I have two Lacie firewire drives. 500g and 1ty. I left the studio two weeks ago and came back Started my G5 and either of the two will not mount or even be listed in Disk Utility. I have a lot of video files on these drive. Please someone help me.
It would be worth trying a reset of the SMU which, for your Mac, I think is by shutting down, disconnecting all peripherals, disconnecting the mains cable for 10 seconds and then reconnecting the mains cable while holding the power button down – followed by releasing the power button and giving it another short press to power up the Mac. See this Apple doc.
It's probably irrelevant, but you might as well also reset PRAM and NVRAM – by starting up with 4 keys held down: Command, Option, 'P' and 'R', and keeping those keys down until you hear the 3rd 'boing'. (Apple doc).

HARD DRIVES WILL NOT MOUNT AT ALL
Ok my Lacie HDs will not mount at all anymore through my fire wire 400 ports. i have been back and forth with Apple and Lacie with this issue for months and nobody can find the issue. Heres the deal. When I bring my HDs to the Apple store and they plug them in to another computer they mount just fine. So I brought my whole system into the Apple store and ofcourse my HDs would not mount on my computer. So they tried to mount the HDs they had and they worked just fine. Mounting on USB works just fine also. So Apple tested my firewire ports and according to Apple my firewire ports are operating fine. But something is not operating fine. The tech at Apple told me that since I have 2 Lacie HDs plugged in on the same firewire bus its possible that my Mac (G4) can not tell the difference between the 2 drives and that would make them not mount at all. He also thought it would be a good idea for me to get a firewire card so my drives would be seperated and they can work on completely on 2 different busses. I have tried everything you could think of to try and get these drives to mount. I have tried to mount them one at a time, I have tried different power supplies, and firewire cords, nothing is working. Help me out..

I have had trouble with USB lacie drives in the past. Some people swear by them, but I personally avoid them as well as maxtor.
sounds like you're stuck with them since they are that old. I would pursue something with Lacie. If every other hdd connects fine - except them, and Apple has tested the ports = seems like a problem with the drives. I'd get the data off them and see if you can't get lacie to help out.

Xserve Raid will not mount - fibre channel link down
I came back from being out of town and my Xserve is running, but will not mount on the G5 tower via fibre channel. It was powered off and up again and still nothing. Apple tech says to reset raid controllers, however, I have sensitive data on the drives and lots of video/FCP projects on there. It has just run out of warranty and now asked to pay $199 per incident to get any help. I will gladly take any help.
Read the boards, ran Disk Utility and still did not show up.
Also, told the fibre cables tend to "burn out" but have yet to spend money if this is not the problem.
Thanks.Resetting the controllers is non-destructive. However, if you power-cycled the array, that should take care of it.

I've never experienced (or heard of this) myself, and have never had a problem on any of my arrays, some of which have been running for years with zero problems. Of course, environment (especially heat) could play a part, but it seems a little bit of a stretch to me.
Does RAID Admin have anything to say about the RAID?
