Pref File (OSX 10.5)

So I'm using Lightroom 2.2 in OSX Leopard, and I'm having a bit of a weird issue.
For the last few weeks, LR has been prompting me to do a backup of the catalog every time I open it. I looked to see if the setting was correct, that it was to do it every week, and it was.
I found this annoying, but couldn't really think of what else to do so I ignored it.
Today, however, I decided that I was going to split up my massive catalog into one for each year (going back to '07), which I hope will lead to better performance. Well, I split off one catalog, and went to switch to it to see if everything was kosher. LR closed, re-opened (and prompted to do a backup again, naturally), and then I noticed that the catalog wasn't changed.
A little bit of poking around later, and I've determined that Lightroom can't modify it's own .pref file (In /Users/Steve/Library/Preferences). If I delete it, Lightroom won't make a new one either, and then every time it opens, it acts like it's the first time. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, and fiddling with permissions. No dice.
Anyone have any idea what might be causing this, and what I can do? I'm fresh out of ideas. The only other info I have is that the current permissions on the file itself I don't think matter, because LR can't make a new one either, and the permissions on /Preferences right now are dwrx---wrx+. The + irks me, because I get the feeling that it's some immutable tag, but OSX doesn't seem to have a problem with this, and no other apps are having a problem.
Thanks!
Steve Gaucher

Alright guys, I fixed the issue, with a little help from Apple's tech support guys. Here's how:
1. Turn the root user on. The procedure for doing this can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528
2. Log out of your main user, log in as root.
3. Move the Preferences folder onto the main user's desktop.
4. Log out of root, and log in as your main user again. OSX will recreate the Preferences folder (which in my case may have been corrupted somehow), and will recreate some .plists.
5. Open Lightroom. Everything works now, including switching catalogs, etc. Some settings will have to be reset and stuff, but that's no big deal.
6. Move all the files from the Preferences folder on your desktop back into the Preferences folder, overwriting nothing that has anything to do with Adobe. Log out, and back in, and everything should be back to normal for the most part.

Final Cut Crashed and then corrupted the file. So Final cut wouldn't open up. I tried reloading the backup, trashing the prefs file, systematically going through the 3 previous versions and opening them by themselves one by one. I found Final Cut now loads but each of the backups and files in the previous 3 versions won't load. I've worked on the project for 3 weeks. Im suprised the backup files won't load either!?! I've only rendered 1 low res version. I am thinking I will have to rebuild the project in Final Cut 7. That is simply too risky to have all my back ups not load up!!

I'm a little confused by this?
Final cut now opens if launch older projects. But if I actually click on the project it crashes. Im not sure what you mean by events? I've moved them from the events folder.
but when I open up and of the projects the FInal Cut opens but then wont load the project even with no events in the FInal Cut Events folder.

  • I had to trash pref files when upgrading to Logic 9

Started with Logic 7 three years ago...
So yesterday I upgraded to Logic 9 from 8, and I had two unusual problems.
First, when I would record a track, the waveform overview wouldn't draw. It would make the blue box, with a line down the middle, and I had audio, but no visible waveform. If I manually prompted Logic to redraw it, it would...
But then on subsequent tracks they wouldn't have a waveform either. Now it's pretty common for Logic to ignore rendering these while you're actually recording something. It's focused on getting your audio on the drive... but as soon as you stop, it will immediately display your waveform and that wasn't happening.
I also was getting a "disk too slow message". I was recording to an internal drive and I have recorded multiple tracks simultaneously with Logic 8, so a single voice track shouldn't have made a difference.
Repairing permissions seems to have stopped the "disk too slow message", and as far as the waveform overview, I trashed the pref files. (Logic will make new ones when you relaunch it) That seems to have fixed the issue.
I went through something similar when they came out with 8. I actually had to delete the old program and do a complete re-install.
Having gone through that, which isn't much... Logic 9 looks really good. Some great new features...
Here's a question: How can we get Apple to give us a .pdf manual? Is there someplace we can put in the request?
Based on what I've seen, that's the biggest disappointment everyone has!

  • Despite home page set as default, prefs file being deleted. (twice) it still opens in welcome window, alongside is my home page tab,add on checking doesnt finish .

everytime I open firefox. checking for add ons flashes up and disappears then welcome page opens, my home page tab is alongside it. I have uninstalled firefox. deleted the prefs file. instructed my privacy programme to ignore firefox all to no avail. I know I can edit user.js but not sure how. I can open it in notepad as instructed in help files but have no idea what to do next and what to edit.

Do you have a file user.js in the Firefox Profile Folder?
Such a file isn't there by default, so if it is there then either you or other software or a Firefox extension has created it.

I apologize for the redundant post...I posted this in the Tiger/Mail forum but haven't gotten a reply.

  • Where is my user pref file?

The icon in my Users & Groups preferences keeps changing back to one I don't want, no matter how many times I change it. I think the preferences file is corrupted and would like to delete it, but where is it in Lion? There used to be a Library folder in the user folder. Help!

I think I have solved my issue. When I looked at the pref files I found a number of gibberish files, usually in groups of two or three, which appeared to have no content. I deleted these and so far so good!
    The files deleted were:

  • How do you remove pref file to perform clean install on Firefox for android?

Uninstallling Firefox on android does not remove the pref file thus does not allow clean install. I have also been unable to find any way to reset everything to default. Both Firefox and beta do nothing but crash and will not even load a full web page. Factory reset device LG g pad 7.0 lte. V410 android 4.4.2. Also does not help.

Its under system root\data\data\org.mozilla.firefox(beta)\files\mozilla\ here you will see the profile folder xxxx.default. This is where its located. If you want a true clean install, uninstall Firefox then delete the org.mozilla.firefox. Then reinstall.

  • HSB Issue, related to prefs file?

    Hi,
I've been migrating from cs5 to 6 and have everything setup as I like it, mostly.
My issue is with gradients and their color mode. Previously, in cs5, the color mode stayed on HSB, now I have to select HSB because for some reason cs6 defaults to RGB every single time and it's driving me insane.
Now I've done some experiments and if I delete my prefs file from CS5 I can replicate this annoying behaviour, once the prefs file is reinstated the color mode stays on HSB.
I tried copying the prefs file over to the cs6 folder but that doesn't solve the issue.
I'm trying to pin down whether it's because the gradients were created in cs5 that they work in cs5 but I'm starting to pull my hair out here.
I've read everything on this forum related to the issue and googled till my eyes didn't work. I've spent a lot of time on this now and need some help.
I've seen plenty of people say it isn't possible to keep the mode on HSB but that isn't my experience, I somehow managed to achieve it before and need to replicate it because I simply can't be doing with have to change the color mode every time I need to change a color.
I'm sure if you multiplied all those additonal seconds across all the users it would equal thousands of hours, it's just wasting everyone's time.
I'm really hoping you can help.
    Thanks.

OK I see what you're experiencing now. Double-clicking on the HSB gradient node does indeed bring up a color picker that is set to RGB.  DOH!
This doesn't happen for me, since I use two monitors, and keep a majority of the tools open on the second monitor at all times. Instead of double-clicking on a gradient node, I simply select the node and use the (already open) color panel to make my adjustments/additions, which remain in HSB once they are initially changed from default (on a new boot of AI) from grayscale. With your workflow, I agree Adobe needs to address keeping color models (in art and swatches) as originally specified, especially for people (almost everyone it seems) who work with only one monitor.
Just speculating here: HSB is "just" another way to present RGB. In my experience, it isn't as accurate as RGB, but gets one "very close" to what can be achieved when working in RGB instead of HSB. In this sense (still speculating) HSB is being seen by the software as a "derivative" or "expression" of RGB. So when a new color panel is opened, it would "naturally" defer to the base color-mode, RGB. I imagine addressing this problem, to allow the 1-monitor user to work in a derivative of RGB might be a huge challenge, affecting all areas of the software that deal with color.
Ever since I began working with two monitors, many of these issues simply don't affect me. BTW, I have the same success using HSB in CS5 as I do in CS6, so my earlier guess that it was the Creative Cloud version that was allowing me to remain in HSB was thankfully wrong. It's the second monitor, allowing me to keep the tools open at all times.
Now if Adobe would just add HSB to InDesign! ... it's always something.

  • Corrupted prefs file?

    Hi All,
I need some advice. Why do you think that the text size pull down menu's up and down arrows would be grayed out/disabled? I can change sizes if I manually type in a number, and the pull-down works. The keyboard shortcut works to change the type size one point size at a time up and down.
Of course, my habit is to select the number and use the up and down arrow keys on my keyboard to change the size, sometimes I use the arrows in the box.
I've opened the file on a different computer and it behaves normally.
On the original computer, I've created a new file (the picture above) and it behaved the same way, so I think it's something independent of the file and something with the app.
I've also experimented with different fonts with no change in behavior.
I've deleted what I thought was the preferences file, the one just out there in the user/library/prefs folder. That did not change the behavior. There are a bunch of other Adobe-related folders in the prefs folder but I didn't want to mess with those and screw something up.
Anyway... Mac G5 PPC, OS 10.4.8, InDe CS4. The other computer (where the type control panel behaved normally) is an MBP (Intel), OS 10.5.8, InDe CS4.
    Any advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks--d

I held them down before I started it up... that must not be the way to do it either. It requires such pretzel-fingers... I'll have to experiment. For the moment, though, I have work to do!
I found this other article that gives more insight : <http://indesignsecrets.com/everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-indesign-preferences-a nd-presets.php>. There's a link to a downloadable PDF. Although I didn't find my prefs files in the locations specified in the pdf, I did find a couple of files that I deleted and that re-made themselves when I started up ID.
SO, for now things are good. Thanks so much for your help!

You need iDVD to make a video DVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • Location manager prefs file?

I just got my powerbook back from a disk crash and am trying to rebuild it.
I have a copy of the drive saved on an external, and Im selectively restoring the stuff that I want.
I would like to be able to recover my location prefs as I have four or five places set up where I regularly use the p/b, but cant find where/how these are stored.
Is there a location prefs file or similar which I can transfer to the rebuilt machine..?
    Thanks

If you go to <username>/Library you'll find a Safari folder that you can drag accross and preserve all your Safari settings. The network file you need is in, I think, <harddrive>/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, but I'm not sure on this one. You may also want to drag across the <username>/Library/Application Support folder to preserve settings in many apps.
    Hope that helps.

  • Where are all Mail Pref files ?

    Hello,
my hd crash last week, i bought e new one and install a new OS.
Today my apple reseller succeded in recovering all my files of my old disk.
Now i would like to copy all Mail Pref files into the right place so i can recover my Mail like one week ago. I know that somes of the files are in Users>Me>Library>Mail but it's not enought my accounts are not set up !
I've also .emlx files in .mbox folders that i want to add to my Mail software, but i didn't succeed
Somebody can guide me in the dark area of Mail
    Thx a lot

    Hello Anterak.
The other participants have already answered the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist part.
I've also .emlx files in .mbox folders that i want
to add to my Mail software, but i didn't succeed
Could you please be more precise about this? You should be able to import these into Mail by doing File > Import Mailboxes, choosing Mail for Mac OS X, and following the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the *.mbox folders, rather than the *.mbox folders themselves.

  • Need help finding the prefs files

    Hello!
I don't have Airtunes Express, nor any experience of it. Still, I'm trying to put together a small utility that will let you change speakers remotely. It's almost done, but lacks one important function: the ability to choose speakers by name. I figure this info is stored locally in some prefs file, so my question is: can some tell me the path to it and perhaps post the contents of the file(s) here (or e-mail it to me)? Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Does tweaking iPhoto prefs file produce higher quality?

I'm about to order some books & calendars. In older versions of iPhoto there was a simple hack that was recommended to produce higher quality products. It involved editing the iPhoto prefs file and changing the dpi settings.
Is this still recommended for iPhoto 08? If so, where can I find the instructions?
Any other tips for a first-time photo services customer?

    Steve M:
It's no longer necessary as iPhoto 7 has set the resolution to 300 dpi for all book sizes.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
