Prefer photos compressed in zip file rather than imbedded in email

My daughter sends me pictures of our granddaughter using her Powerbook, iPhoto, and Apple Mail app. I use AOL for my regular mail. Mail seems to automatically imbed the pictures in the body of the email. If she sends a large number of pictures, even properly resized for email, it takes forever for these files to open in the body of the email. I received an email with 16 pictures and it took nearly ten minutes to open, and AOL kept warning me it was overloaded. Is there any way to use Apple Mail and have the pictures zipped?
ds

As I mention in a post to HTML question in this forum, I believe the only thing that distinguishes "embedded" from "attached" images is some tags in the message -- it really doesn't make much sense to talk about them as separate files until something processes them into such after receiving what is really a single transmitted message.
IOW, Mail (& every other MIME-compliant sender app) always sends the pictures in the email itself, so it is a question of which tags it uses with them & how processes use them that determines what you see at the receiving end. Ideally, the only processing occurs at the receiving end, but in reality the servers may apply processes before final transmission to the addressee. For example, many free email services insert promotional ad blurbs into the body of the message. A few, particularly AOL, can strip the non-text content off the message as a parental control feature or at the request of client software & deliver (or not deliver) it as individual files, sometimes substantially altering the content or encoding as yet another "feature" of the service.
Long time AOL users may have noticed such things in the pre-OS X days -- if you sent multiple attachments via the old AOL client, it would automatically convert them to a .sit file for uploading & (in theory at least) AOL would automatically serve them as .sit files to Mac clients & .zip files to PC clients. (What David S. sees now with the OS X AOL client is the equivalent of that, less the conversion between .zip & .sit.) Using the AOL client also used to -- & maybe still does -- change some file associations so that the "owner app" (the default app that opens the file) is the AOL client.
If you have the Mac AOL client installed, you may notice that it is on the list of "open with" apps for many, many file types. Ironically, it is happy to open & play System 7 sound files & will become the default for opening them since OS X doesn't by default provide any app that registers with launch services to do this. Similar things happen with other file types, particularly those that are common with PC's but less so with Macs, or are basically proprietary versions of compression formats licensed by the once-mighty AOL & still floating around the web because their use is as free as all those AOL client disks it was once impossible to avoid. (For example, if you occasionally want to compress files into .sit format & don't feel like paying for Stuffit, you can do so with the AOL client.)
Anyway, the point is once you involve the AOL client in the equation, you can no longer be sure what you send is what a recipient will receive, over & above whatever the client email app does to process the message, or anything else that occurs after a message is sent.
In my experience, the best approach for images or anything else you want to arrive unaltered is to first "encapsulate" every file into a single zip file with the Finder (actually BOMArchiveHelper, if you want to be technical about it), & then attach that to your email. This pretty much keeps services from mucking with it in any way: even if they split it out from the text of the message, they treat it as one, non-graphic file that can't be displayed inline, no matter what the tags or anything else say they can do with it.

  • Firefox downloads previously downloaded versions of zipped files rather than current version.

On a website I manage, I downloaded a zipped MS Word file. After making changes to the file and uploading the modified file to my server, Firefox still downloads the old version of the zipped file. In fact, if I rename the file (so the link now points to a file that no longer exists on the server), the previously downloaded version of the file is STILL sent. I've used two methods (FireFTP and the server company's file manager) to rename the file, and the non-existent file is still sent.

I did reload the page (using all the methods you suggested), but still the old file. You mentioned bypassing the cache; is that something different than clearing the cache?
I don't think this is Firefox specific; the same thing is happening with IE. I'm also working with the server company to see if the problem is at their end.

  • The latest version of Firefox has a compatability problem with the Reget download manger which means I can only download zipped files rather than large MOV or MKV files as could previously be done. Is there a solution to this issue?

As per above the Reget add on is now not compatible with Firefox's latest version. Is this something which Firefox is looking into? Is there a work around or is this up to Reget to remedy?

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Emailing photos as attachments rather than embedded in email text

    Hi
I have set my mail preferences to send emails as plain text rather than RTF.
    Here is what happens
Route 1) I export a photo from iphoto to my desktop, then open the Mail program, create a new email to my friend who uses Outlook on WIndows, and ATTACH the photo from my desktop. Whilst from my mac end, it looks as though the photo is embedded in the text of the email, when my friend receives it in Outlook, the photo is "attached" just as I wanted it to be, and is not embedded in the text. So route 1 works
Route 2) I select the photo in iphoto and click the Email icon within iphoto at the bottom right of the screen. The email program opens and the photo appears (as before) to be embedded in the email text rather than attached. This time when I send this to a friend using outlook on Windows, the email arrives with the photo still embedded in the body of the email, and not as an attachment. So this route does not work
Any ideas why route 2 is overriding the preference settings an sending in RFT (assuming that is what it is doing)? Can I change this?
Is there a way to make the "Email" icon in Mail work the same way - i.e. to attach the photo as an attached file rather than embed in the text of the email?
I ask because I send photos for people to save in original size and format so they can print - embedded photos in the text are no good for this
    Thanks

You should deselect having iPhoto include any caption or file names. Having those following each photo is likely the source of this behavior. When sending to such recipients, you should have all attachments last in the message, and with no text following or between them.
Also, when the message appears in the Compose window, an extra safeguard is to then click on Format in the menubar, and choose Make Plain Text. I use Aperture, rather than iPhoto, and always do this step, and would also do with iPhoto.

  • How to store images as disk files rather than in iphoto db

Is there a way to make iPhoto maintain the images as disk files, rather than import them into iphotos massive database file. I would prefer to use iphoto to just store a link to the photo, rather than the photo itself. That way I can work with the image in photoshop or whatnot without having to jerk around with the iPhoto database/

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No need to find a workaround. You can use Photoshop from inside iPhoto.
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I can't be sure, but what probably happens is that the page doesn't give you a link to a downloadable file, but a button which activates a script. There's nothing you can do about that, because you don't control the script.
it just downloads the transcripts not the document.
It sounds like the downloaded file does not open or execute as it's supposed to (which, for instance, would happen if what you downloaded was a Java application, but you didn't have Java installed).
If you are allowed to, give us the URL and we'll have a look. Also, you should add what version of Mac OS X and of Safari you are using, and you should correct your profile (which says "Mac Pro" -- this forum is for the MacBook Pro, which is a different computer from the Mac Pro).

Safari always opens a linked file rather than download it. Can't always Right Click for menu option as the web page is not setup that way.

    Thanks anyone

    Hi guys
Thanks for suggestions. Carolyn, I did as you suggested but didn't solve problem. KeeChan, as explained in original post, that is my usual fallback but not all web sites work like that. Try downloading Safari - right click (Ctrl Click) on download button and all you get is the "Download.png" image.
I finally found the answer. A long time ago I had downloaded and used "SpeedDownload" and had deleted it. Somehow, some trace of the app was left behind and the mime association with dmg files was messed up.
You can not get rid of Speed Download by throwing its files away or by using an app cleaner product. You MUST run the Speed Download installer program and select the "uninstall" option to remove it.
My browsers now download dmg files correctly.

  • How can I save an email as a download file rather than a file in my email

I wish to save entire emails in a windows folder rather than in an email folder. I have tried hitting "save as" but although I get a message telling me the download is complete I cannot open the documents. Also, I am getting weird icons after I try to download thses emails on my desktop. I am not that familiar with Mozilla but was running IE for the longest time. Any help would be appreciated.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

'''File|Save As''' gives you several options. By default it will save as a .eml file, which will need an email client to view. You can usually save by drag-and-drop, but that creates an .eml file too.
You can save as HTML by putting in an html file extension when doing File|Save As.
    This add-on:
    https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html
gives you multiple options for saving one or more messages in various formats.

    Hello,
Usually pink\purple background appears when "Show Grid Overlay" is enabled.
please go to View > Hide Grid Overlay and see if it works.
I am not sure if it will fix the problem as you said that pink\purple background appears when you place a swf file only.
If this do not fix the problem I would request you to share the screenshot of the design mode for better idea of the problem.

  • Is it possible to undo the Ken Burns effect on all photos at once in iMovie, rather than clicking "crop" and "fit" on each individual photo?

Is it possible to undo the Ken Burns effect on all photos at once in iMovie, rather than clicking "crop" and "fit" on each individual photo?

Hey Villiam,  Kevin is referring to setting a movement on a photo setting keyframes (like zoom out to in), right-clicking on Motion, and choose save as preset.  This will put that movement into your presets folder under Effects.  I am going to try this on my next montage and see if I can find some efficiencies.  Thanks Kevin, that was a great tip!!!
Also thanks to Jim.  I spent like 30 min looking at all the keyboard shortcuts.  It's a little overwhelming to establish a solid shortcut format that a team of editors can learn and use.  I'm going to be trying the FCP short cuts, then go back to the default.  It looks like the PR default has a lot of existing and helpful shortcuts assigned already.  It's just going to take getting used to a new platform.
I'm still looking for tools and/or methods to allow an editor to assemble a 60 second montage with 10 photos, VO and music in 30 minutes.  It's going to be a challenge but I think it's possible with the right innovative process.  I'll still challenge anyone to find a way to quickly assemble a montage in an assembly line or template-based fashion using Adobe Premiere CC where there's on-screen text, advanced transitions, timed to VO, etc.
I think I'm dreaming for a tool to automatically do this within Premiere, while I think the answer for now might just be customizing motion presets and creating a favorites folder of transitions that can be dragged onto each clip.  I'll see if there’s a way to apply a set of transitions or motion presets to a series of photos on the timeline opposed to doing it one by one.  I can see this solution being important as video montages are becoming more popular in our industry, and the faster we can make them using a professional software package like Premiere the more prosperous we will be.

See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash or simply import the media folder back into the library. Restoring a recent backup of the .itl database will restore the original date added values, ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. that would otherwise be missing from the reimported media.
