Preference file - *** render time

Hi, couple thing things here, my FCP is acting a little buggy right now and in he past I have always trashed the preference file and than reopened FCP and for the most part the app worked great however, currently when I search for the pref file it can not be found any advice? Second ? is I'm working in and HDV timeline and things where going well and than one day I opened the file and made a change to a transition went to render and got a dialog saying render time about 3 hours.... when the day before the same render took 1 or 2 minutes.... hence the need to trash the prefs. any thoughts?

Trashing preferences tends to fix some odd behavior, and will be like bringing FCP back to the first time you opened it. You will have to reset scratch disk etc. once you do this.
Trashing preferences and repairing permissions.
Close Final Cut Pro.
Go to: Users/your user name/Library/Preferences.
Drag, "com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist" to the trash.
Scroll down to the Final Cut Pro User Settings folder.
Drag, "Final Cut Pro 6 Preferences" to the trash.
Drag, "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" to the trash
Drag, "Final Cut Pro POA Cache" to the trash.
Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
Select your system disk
Click on the Repair Permissions button
Wait for the permissions to be repaired
Restart your computer

  • Measuring preview and file render times

Does anyone know how I can accurately measure preview and file render times other than a stop watch? I know the Premiere Pro benchmark does this, but I'm trying to figure out the gains I will get with different settings for my own projects and wanted to know if there is any way to accurately capture this information or find it somewhere within the software.

There's no data base you can go to for this info.  You really just need to watch the screen.
Run short tests - 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes.  That way you're not waiting forever for an export to finish.

  • IWeb on macbook pro with mavericks cannot import old iWeb files from time machine back up

Hi! The apple store completely wiped my macbook and installed mavericks. I made a time machine back up before bringing it in to be completely wiped. Computer had bad software so they recommended me to handpick items and bring them over to new operating system without completly putting the entire time machine back up on it.
So I did but my only concern is Iweb. Now I got Iweb back installed in mavericks I cannot seem to import any files from my back up to my application in my renewed computer with mavericks. I searched for .domains, sites and sites2 but I cannot extract anything and I still have some old websites stored with Iweb and use the application quite a bit...
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks a million....

    Not sure what you mean by extract but this might help;
If you're running Lion or later the Home/Library folder is invisible and that's where the domian files are located.  That folder will be invisible in the TM backups also.  Therefore  you can extract Domain files one at a time out of the TM backups for import into iPhoto.  You would do it as follows:
1 - download and run Find Any File to search for a file named ".site".
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.
2 - the search can take a while due to the structure of the TM backups.
3 - select the backup from which you want to recover the Domain file.
4 - drag the file from the search results window to the Desktop.
If you recover more than one Domain file be sure to rename them after dragging to the Desktop so that you don't overwrite one with the next.
5 - you can put the Domain file(s) in your Home/LIbrary/Application Support/iWeb folder but will have to make the library visible as follows:
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible in Lion or Mt. Lion enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Optionsmenu to bring the this window:
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • CS5 on mac 10.6.4 slows system to a crawl, render times really long

We recently upgraded our towers to 10.6.4 and all productivity has slowed to a snails pace using After Effects. On 10.5 the speed was almost TOO fast on our renders...it was awesome. Now I'm looking to get that speed back.
I have a few very simple comps. 1920 x 1080, 23.98fps, 5 layers (4 QT renders from final cut XDCAM and Animation codec, 1 adjustment layer with levels and hue/saturation for color correction). Approx 40 seconds long each.
I've followed the Adobe advice of turning the multiprocessing on and using the following settings from here http://forums.adobe.com/thread/543440
leave 4gb for other apps, set minimum 3gb per processor = 33min render
setting it back to what WAS screaming fast on 10.5:
leave 3gb for other apps, set minimum 0.75gb per processor = 19min render
turning multiprocessing off = 5min render
same project on 10.5 system with multiprocessing turned ON with the above mentioned settings = 2min render
what is going on here? is there a compatibility problem with CS5/10.6 and Animation codec files? that seems to be the bulk of the slowdown, but still over twice as slow?
additionally, when AE is rendering the rest of the system becomes unusable...every action, even dragging a finder window around, results in beachballs and a 30 - 40 second lag in response. this happens with or without multiprocessing.
I just want to get back to work...any ideas on how i can configure this beast to get back to my former speeds?
    8 core mac Pro
    OS 10.6.4
    12gb RAM
many thanks in advance. i'm willing to send beer for a winning fix.

Good to know, thanks for the update. 10.6.x does manage memory differently, but our testing for performance has shown a slight improvement in the newer OS. So I am guessing that the OS update is not the issue. I just ran another test on a Mac with your configuration and saw a 4% improvement on 10.6.4 over 10.5.8.
It's uncertain what state the system memory was in when you started your tests. That's why I asked for a restart of the computer. The times reported seemed like there was a possibility that the OS was swapping. XDCAM footage places a high demand on system resources.  But it's hard to say without being there.
What I was seeing with the initial post was that the two extremes of allocation per background cpu were tried, but not the middle ground. To better see this, launch the Activity Monitor utility or look at the last line of the MP preference. With the 4GB reserved and the 3GB/ bkgnd cpu setting you weren't getting any extra processes spawned for multiprocessing. You can see this in the preferences multiprocessing section as "Actual CPUs that will be used = 0". Then, by setting the pref to .75GB/bkgnd the app launched 8 bkgnd processes, but for the task at hand, I am guessing that they were starved for memory and sometimes failed to render. This was faster than the first test, but still slow. By setting the pref to 1.5GB/bkgnd cpu you were now getting 4 new processes spawned for multiprocessing. The background processes had enough memory to succeed so that made it render faster still.
Now, try setting it to 1GB/bkgnd cpu. That will launch 6 processes which should render faster as long as that is enough memory for the task. If  the Memory pref for Reserve RAM for other apps is set back to 3GB, it will allow the spawning of 7 bkgnd processes. If that is a successful balance for this project then it will be the fastest render time. But, our testing shows it will be at the risk of starving the OS for memory, thus the more conservative 4GB recommendation for a 12GB system.
It's a fine line and why we are recommending that one give up a little speed by reserving more memory for other apps. True, there will be less processes spawned for multiprocessing, but there will also be less chance for the OS to start swapping to disk which greatly slows down performance for all tasks. If that compromise is not acceptible, then the alternative is to buy more ram so that all 8 processes can adequately receive enough memory for the job, and yet still maintain adequate reserves for the OS and other apps.

  • Unusual render times

Hello, I seem to be experiencing weird, fluctuating render times with my projects. Some 10+ minute projects render in 20 minutes or so, others like the one below take far too long for what they are.
    I am running a Macbook Pro, 2.5ghz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 ram, and an AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1GB.
Here is a current project I am working on at the moment - please excuse the blurred sections, this is an internal business video and I am required to do this for security.
The maximum filesize will only be est. 134mb, the length of the video is 3 and a half minutes, and I am only rendering at 720p with 90 second keyframes. When I render this file it takes upwards of 2 hours; sometimes longer.
The source files are 1920x1080 and 1440x1080, and I have 4-5 nested sequences approx 10-20 seconds long each with warp stabilizer applied to them.
I also have fast color corrector applied to all clips. I usually have a VBR of min-4 max-6 but attempted to change it to CBR to see if that decreased rendering time; it didn't.
I've also tried optimizing the memory for both rendering and memory in the preferences window, but I see no difference.
Can you spot anything that might be causing this render to take so long?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Brendan

Thanks for the speedy reply, shootemz. I had no control over the source footage unfortunately and the video needs to be uploaded to a private Youtube channel, so I just selected the Youtube preset from the Export Settings section - and Youtube seems to have a sad every time I try to upload anything that isn't 29.97fps so that's the one I chose.
So all of the things you mentioned increase the encoding time? I didn't know that! I am new to this type of export. It's always been very straight forward in my past jobs. I guess I will play around with the settings and see if I can keep them as close to the source as possible. Thanks for the reply! If anyone else has any other suggestions I would love to hear them also.

  • Getting bookmarks and address book to put into preference files in OS10 Jag

I am trying to put my bookmarks and adbrees book in my browsers on OSX but cant find a place to put them both internet Explorer and Netscape have new files or bookmarks and I can't seem to get the ones I used on OS9 to transfer to OsX How can I get use of these so I can use my previous bookmarks and use them in OSX. Normally you can put them in the prefersence file on OS9 and drag them in if you copied them from a disk that you saved. but cant find the files on OSX (preference) to do this where is the file thanks tim L

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??

How do you delete file from time machine back up?

This from Apple KB Article  If Time Machine is not in your Dock, you can enter Time Machine from the Menu Bar or System Preferences.
Deleting data from a Time Machine backup
To delete all backups of one or more items from a Time Machine backup, follow these steps:
Click the Time Machine icon on your Dock to enter the Time Machine restore interface.
Click on the item you would like to delete. Command-click to select multiple items.
Control-click (or right click) the highlighted item(s) and select "Delete All Backups of..." from the contextual menu, or select "Delete all backups of..." from the Action Item menu.
Authenticate with an administrator password when prompted.

I am trying to download lion with the thumb drive how do i back up my files is time machine good enough or must i transfer everything to my hard drive

A erase of the drive or boot partition is not always necessary.
Flashing question mark at boot could be a easy fix, sometimes it's the firmware that simply forgot what bootable volume to boot from.
Try holding the Option key down while booting the machine, a choice of bootable options appears, select your OS X and boot up.
When you get in, head to System Preferences > Startup disk and set it again new. This will tell the firmware what to boot from. Test it to see.
Now if you don't have a selection of bootable options, it could be that the drive is dead, or OS X is erased or corrupted so it can't boot.
You'll have to run through this list of fixes to see what's going on, if you need a hardware fix or what, I've also included links if you can't fix it and need to recover your data etc.
(If it's not remmebering your boot selection then also run through the list to reset things.)

  • Can't find my Photoshop preferences file

I KNOW this is stupid, but on Windows 7, 64-bit, with all the stuff turned on to show me hidden files and system files and everything, Photoshop CS6 (13.0.1?), and Lightroom 4.3
I'm trying to follow the advice that everything I do in Photoshop should be backed up somewhere other than as part of Photoshop, I periodically move all the stuff in
the Users/<me>/AppData/Roaming/Adobe...  folders to a backup drive...  And, by and large, I can find and figure out what stuff is.
But, I can't find my preferences file.  I went to the Adobe help, and it says:
    General settings
    Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp (32-bit version)
    Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs.psp (64-bit version)
    Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings
I don't have ANYTHING called "Prefs.psp" in the Users stuff.  As near as I can tell, I don't have anything called Prefs.psp ANYWHERE on the disk..
Do I get to pick where this file gets put?  Could I have put it somewhere ELSE?  Or, is it actually named something else?
I wouldn't be much concerned about his, but my latest stupid human trick (we won't go into that please) has convinced me I should do a better job of making sure I can restore Photoshop and Lightroom in the event of a "small error in judgement"

Thanks Noel.  It's nice to know that at least THIS time, I'm not crazy..........
As far as backups, I've got a good setup, EXCEPT for the system backup...  I'm using Syncback to back up everything but the O/S, and I've recently added a backup that takes everything from the system except the Windows folder tree...  So, every night at 1 a.m. everything gets backed up to internal backup drives and a large external backup drive.
What I'll do is add an (hopefully) automated Windows Backup to the other backups.  Given the appallingly stupid things I periodically do I figure I need suspenders and a belt.

  • My photoshop won't open, it says that the preferences file has been deleted. What do I do?

I was just working in my photoshop with no problems, I had just downloaded a free trial pluggin (Filter Forge) but that wasn't working, so I tried to close photoshop to re open it and it wasn't responding so I had to force quit it, and when I went to reopen it this box pops up..... "Could not initialize photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted)" I looked up how to fix this and I went under the library on my MAC to try and find the preferences file to move it because they said that would help, well I forgot.....the file has somehow been deleted. My other option that I haven't tried yet is to open photoshop and do the shortcut keys that resets everything but Im nervous to do that because I don't know what will get reset. Any help will be awesome I have several projects Im working on and need to finish!
    Thanks

If you have not saved your custom presets for some time you should naturally lose those when opening with cmd-alt-shift pressed and selecting to "delete settings file" – but you can consider this a learning experience.
Apart from the presets you also need to set your Preferences (Interface, Performance, …) again after that if you had in any way changed them from the default settings.

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent?  I have an older machine with Windows XP.

I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
    Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?
