Preference panel corruption?

I have a small, annoying problem in my system preferences.
I just noticed that the speech panel is corrupted in some way, and I wonder if anyone has any tips on how to either reinstall it or to fix it.
I can click on it like normal, and it opens up the appropriate preference pane, it just looks terrible.
Here's a picture:

Thanks for the help guys!
15" MBP 2.16 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 1G RAM

ok well i spoke too soon and fixed it myself -
If anyone runs across this thread one day looking for help here was my solution:
be sure system preferences is closed, then find this file: "username"/library/caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
delete it and empty the trash.
perfect! hope it helps

  • Corrupt system preferences panel

I noticed the keyboard and mouse icon on the system preferences panel has become corrupt...sort of showing a clipped zoomed in view of a different looking switch, and only the words 'Keyboard &' is visible, not 'Mouse' also.
Is this something to worry about - or something that can be fixed? Operationally it seems to work fine.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jules.

You're welcome. Pleased to have been of help.
BTW, cache files help to speed things up after the first time you access the item concerned, but they do tend to get corrupted fairly easily. You can trash any of the items in that folder whenever you have a problem with the relevant item - it may not help, but it can't do any harm. You can even trash all the items in that folder occasionally to 'refresh' them.

  • Corrupt icons in System Preferences panel?

For some strange reason, the 'Startup Disk' icon in my system preferences panel has changed...it looks like a giant light switch and you can see a bit of a border around it. Is there any way to reset this back to normal?

I'm running 10.4.6 on a Macbook 2 GHz with all the latest updates installed.

Hi Jonas, delete these two files and relaunch SystemPreferences:

    ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

  • Sharing Preferences panel missing

This is probably an old issue, I just can't seem to locate it here anywhere, and Googling only produces fixes I have already tried. Some of the Macs I support (all running 10.4.11) are missing the Sharing preferences panel in System Preferences. This would not be so bad--it doesn't seem to affect performance at all--but that I cannot re-name machines without access to that panel. I have installed the ARD client, installed the CD/DVD Sharing update, both of which seem to have fixed this in the past. Not now. What's up?

Hi jreyome, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, but usually preventable and caused by pre-existing OS or Disk corruption...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

    Preferences folder corrupted
It has been reported that DiskWarrior has solved the problem in some cases
If you have trouble opening any system preferences. try this....
    • Try logging on to OS X using another admin account. If the same problem exists, it is a system level problem..Try repairing permissions (from Disk Utility). Then log out out/login or restart and test the system preference again.
Corrupt Preferences......Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    • Candidates for trashing of files......
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ATS.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.BezelServices.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.(title of item).xxx.plist
where - xxx is an alphanumeric string
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes. cache
    (3) Empty the Trash.
    (4) Log out/Log in or restart. If this did not help, go to ~/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
    • If it still doesn't work, try deleting the contents of all the cache folders on your mac:
    /library/caches,
    /system/library/caches,
    ~/library/caches within their home folders.
You may need to log in as root to accomplish this. Then reboot and test.
    Next step... ....
    - Quit System Preferences, if it is open.
       - Navigate to ~/Library ..... drag the "Preferences" folder to the desktop.
       - Restart and test your applications.
       - If this works, delete the old preferences folder. (You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them).
Navigate to ~/Library/Fonts ....... drag this folder to the desktop.
       - Restart and test your applications.
       - If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( A likely suspect is Time RO, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    • If that doesn't help, try disconnecting all peripheral devices except for monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and resetting the PRAM, then test before reconnecting any peripherals.

  • Security Preferences Panel Crashes

    Hi:
I recently bought a MacBook 2.16Hz. I imported all my data from my old iBook G4. Both are running MacOS X 10.4.10 with the latest system updates. The big problem is that when I try to open the Security Preference Panel on the MacBook, it keeps crashing. I've already tried deleting the plist for com.apple.security, but to no avail. Is there an way to solve this? So far, is the only non-working app on the MacBook
    Best Regards

Create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the Security prefPane works. If so, something's amiss in the original account. See the steps I posted for resolving conflicts/corrupt plists within an account at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4703015
If not, consider doing do an Archive & Install installation, saving user and network settings. Details are in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120

  • How do I stop MobileMe error message without a Preference Panel?

This MacBook running 10.6.8 has no MobileMe preference panel and no "ByHost" folder, so I can't follow the instructions found elsewhere here to stop the error message "You entered an invalid MobileMe member name or password. Verify your MobileMe member name and password in MobileMe System Preferences."
The error message keeps popping up and I can't figure out what program is producing it. I have removed the MobileMe account from iMail. I've checked iCal and Address Book, and they don't have MobileMe syncing turned on.

Removing the MobileMe account from Mail (not iMail) won't remove the account's setting for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). Look at the list in your remaining Mail accounts and delete the one for MobileMe. Otherwise, everytime you open Mail, that server connection will attempt to connect.

  • This message could not be delivered because your SMTP settings are not set. Please use the Accounts Preferences panel to set the SMTP options for your account.

I am not able to send out an email. I keep getting the following message: This message could not be delivered because your SMTP settings are not set. Please use the Accounts Preferences panel to set the SMTP options for your account. Can someone help me with this?

We need some information, starting with the email provider (eg. Google, Yahoo, Bellsouth, etc)

  • Magic Mouse preference panel missing

I just put a magic mouse into operation and while it is "working" it is not doing some things I want it to and I am unable to change any settings because the "Mouse" preference panel has not changed to a dedicated "Magic Mouse" pref panel. All the Mouse pref panel provides is what amounts to a demo of the features of a Magic Mouse. No customization is possible.
I've looked through other posting in this site to no avail. I have read about a conflict with something called USB Overdrive but I am not in possession of that.
    Any suggestions?

  • ICloud & Mail,Contacts,& Calendars Preference Panels?

I have both an iCloud Preference Panel and a Preference Panel named Mail, Contacts, & Calendars.
Shouldn't the Mail, Contacts, & Calendars Preference Panel (which has checkboxes for Mail and Notes) have been replaced by the iCloud Preference Panel?
Could this duplication be why I can't get the Mail checkbox to stay checked in the iCloud Preference Panel?
    Thanks...

They are different. Mail, Contacts and Calendars are for other accounts (Gmail, Hotmail...)

  • System preferences panel under loepard 10.5.1

Some of my system preferences icons disappeared from the System preferences panel (personal / desktop & screen saver). How do I get them back?

    Hello
Thanks! The problem (not its unidentified source) was solved by reinstalling the missing PreferencesPanes files with *Pacifist 2.5*: I extracted the /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ files from the Leopard install disk (very cool software! and no restart was needed to verify the success of the operation).
I did not try to look for the missing files with the following "+Search your Mac for preferencepane using CMD+F. Ensure that you select This Mac and File Name, change Kind to System files and change don't include to include.+"
which I did not understand or kow ow to...
    Thanks a lot again,
ps I will post again if these files go missing again (just for info)

  • How do I get rid of System Preference panels that are incompatible?

I need to delete 3 Leopard-incompatible System Preference panels. How do I get rid of them?
(I am currently working on making a new clean install, but I'm using an update-from-Tiger installation until I get my applications and preferences setup on this).

Thanks! I knew it had to be something easy; I just didn't try the right key-combination. For me, without Mighty Mouse, it's ctrl-click to equal a right click.

  • Illustrator cs4 preferences file corrupt message

I use Illustrator cs4 for windows and after I restart my computer when I open Illustrator cs4 a box pops open telling me that the preferences file is corrupt and it is using the default settings. This only happens when I restart my computer. If I don't restart my computer I can open and close the program over and over with no problem. Could there be some program conflicting with Illustrator?

I did a clean install before installing CS4 and the AI prefs issue
still occurred. CS4 is basically the only thing I have installed and
    this happens. It's very weird.
This happens to me on two separate machines.
I've ran the file compare utility and you look at the differences in
the text and neither of them really make sense to me. How does it even
    know the preferences are corrupt?
This is a very frustrating situation as I can never enjoy the Recent
Files List, and that every now and then when I want to change up my
preferences I have to go through a process of unlocking (read:
disabling Read Only) and backing up the file, opening AI changing
prefs, etc, and relocking. The only way to keep from getting the
corrupt prefs is to mark the prefs file as Read Only, but it totally
disables recent file lists and gives the hassle I just described.
What's odd is that the "working" prefs file can get corrupted when I
try to change preferences. I'll back it up first to be careful, then
unlock the one in AI, open AI, change a pref, close it and lock it,
and next thing I know it's corrupt again. So then I'll try putting the
backed up locked prefs file that was working and it will be corrupt
too. That may not make sense as I've described you, but I assure you I
understand it completely. Something is definitely wonky!
It's funny because I see a lot of suggestions to some people's issues
that say "you might have corrupt prefs, try moving the folder/deleting
it". Our issue IS the corrupt prefs!

  • Internet Accounts Preference pane corrupted after 10.9.5 update

After loading the 10.9.5 update I noticed that my Internet Accounts preferences pane in System Preferences is corrupted. The pane shows mostly blank, but will show graphic corruption if I move the window around. It has the list of accounts even though you cannot see them. If I click on the first account location my iCloud account shows up on the right. The list under it doesn't show, but it is also present. I have gone through and trashed a few plist files that look related. I tried most of the items related to problems in this area, but I have been unable to figure out what is causing this anomaly. The only other problem I have that is related is that if I try to create a new Mail account, the account type picker has the last item with a radio button, but no graphic. If I select it, it shows an example AOL address, but the rest of the text is not correct.
This is the add account pane in mail. I assume that last one is supposed to be AOL.
This is the pane that shows up when selecting the blank entry. It sort of looks like a foreign language without the right font.
I am going to try re-loading the combo pack upgrade for Mavericks to see if that can correct this. Any ideas are appreciated. Did 10.9.5 pull out the AOL option and just not do it right on my system?
Just found a related issue. Add Account in Contacts (need to add a directory account) doesn't do anything. I had a directory account during the upgrade, but removed all accounts and re-added all back except that one since I cannot.
    Thanks

I did the Safe Boot again and had the problem. I still have the problem after rebooting into normal mode. Looks like there is an uncaught exception when I select to add an account in the address book. There are similar uncaught exceptions when I got into the internet accounts preference pane as well.
