Preference panel error

I have an original 20" cinema display. I have a new Mac Pro & have the display hooked up with the new adapter. Regardless of the adpater & upgrade, I have had a problem. I often get the display preference window opening up on its own. Sometimes this doesn't happen for months, but when this oddity happens,it is annoying, the preference window can open as much as every 10 seconds; which drives me nuts & detracts from what I am working on.
Is this a prefrence error ? Since I have a new Mac & new OS, can it be a system error ? Is there a problem with my display ? Do I need to replace it ?
PS 15 times in writing this, the display setting window has appeared & I have had to click to get back into this window

TRy putting a piece of black tape over the touch sensitive pref. button of the monitor, Could be that it is was too sensitive to light or something. Just a thought.

  • How do I stop MobileMe error message without a Preference Panel?

This MacBook running 10.6.8 has no MobileMe preference panel and no "ByHost" folder, so I can't follow the instructions found elsewhere here to stop the error message "You entered an invalid MobileMe member name or password. Verify your MobileMe member name and password in MobileMe System Preferences."
The error message keeps popping up and I can't figure out what program is producing it. I have removed the MobileMe account from iMail. I've checked iCal and Address Book, and they don't have MobileMe syncing turned on.

Removing the MobileMe account from Mail (not iMail) won't remove the account's setting for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). Look at the list in your remaining Mail accounts and delete the one for MobileMe. Otherwise, everytime you open Mail, that server connection will attempt to connect.

  • Sharing Preferences panel missing

This is probably an old issue, I just can't seem to locate it here anywhere, and Googling only produces fixes I have already tried. Some of the Macs I support (all running 10.4.11) are missing the Sharing preferences panel in System Preferences. This would not be so bad--it doesn't seem to affect performance at all--but that I cannot re-name machines without access to that panel. I have installed the ARD client, installed the CD/DVD Sharing update, both of which seem to have fixed this in the past. Not now. What's up?

Hi jreyome, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, but usually preventable and caused by pre-existing OS or Disk corruption...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Cannot find Bluetooth Preference Panel to install new Magic Mouse

Tried to install a new Magic Mouse, but the computer does not see it. Bluetooth icon is not in toolbar, and Bluetooth Pane is not in preferences panel. Found bluetooth.prefPane file in HD>System>Library>PreferencesPane, double clicked on it, but got the error message -- You cannot open "Bluetooth" preferences pane because it is not available to you at this time. You might need to connect a device to your computer to see the preferences pane.
Installed new batteries in Magic Mouse, but it still is not seen by the computer.
Note - I have not used Bluetooth devices on this computer before.
    Suggestions?

In the past, Apple have specifically recommended and supported the D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth Adapter, but that one is quite old now, so you may have difficulty finding one.
    http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=34
They now appear to be recommending the Targus ACB10US adapter:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3940
There are literally dozens of other USB Bluetooth Adapters on the market, but not all are 100% Mac compatible, so definitely try before you buy, or buy from somewhere that accepts returns.

  • JAVA Webstart preferences panel doesn't show

    Hello,
I am running on Windows 2000 and I have installed JAVA Webstart including JRE 1.3.1_01. After the installation I have added 'javaws.cfg.proxy.setting=NONE' into my javaws.cfg file, which enabled me to finally start the JAVA Webstart application manager. But- I can't get the preferences panel to show up? When I click on the preferences- tab basically nothing happens!
I have already tried to deinstall WebStart and install it again, but this didn't solve the problem. Is anybody out there, who had this problem as well and knows how to solve it?

    Hello,
I have now been able to add an entry to the 'javaws.cfg' files (javaws.cfg.showConsole=true), which now brings up the JAVA Console. When I now press the 'preferences' options to bring up the JAVAWS preferences panel, I get the following errors displayed:

  • Preflight Panel Error

I've recently started using the preflight panel in ID CS4 when I produce my company's 4/c process covers.
I have set up a custom preflight profile so that under:
    - IMAGES and OBJECTS > Image Resolution > color, grayscale and 1-bit images are checked off and set at minimum resolution of 300dpi.
    - COLOR > Color Spaces and Modes Not Allowed: RGB, Spot Color, and Lab are checked off.
                    > Spot Color Setup > Predefined Spot Colors Must: Use CMYK Equivalents
However, when I place some EPS files, I'm getting preflight panel errors indicating that the EPS file has an effective resolution less than that of 300dpi I set in my custom profile, and that the "content" uses spot color.
I opened up the EPS files in AI CS4 and the doc info says no spot colors. And when I package the ID files with the EPS graphics, the summary says that no spot colors were found. Also, these are postscript files...why would I get a resolution error? Besides, the EPS files are at 100%.
Why the spot color error? Help!

Run the EPS files thru Illustrator and sava as to proper current .ai files and replace and see if the problem persists.

  • Magic Mouse preference panel missing

I just put a magic mouse into operation and while it is "working" it is not doing some things I want it to and I am unable to change any settings because the "Mouse" preference panel has not changed to a dedicated "Magic Mouse" pref panel. All the Mouse pref panel provides is what amounts to a demo of the features of a Magic Mouse. No customization is possible.
I've looked through other posting in this site to no avail. I have read about a conflict with something called USB Overdrive but I am not in possession of that.
    Any suggestions?

Shouldn't the Mail, Contacts, & Calendars Preference Panel (which has checkboxes for Mail and Notes) have been replaced by the iCloud Preference Panel?

Some of my system preferences icons disappeared from the System preferences panel (personal / desktop & screen saver). How do I get them back?

    Hello
Thanks! The problem (not its unidentified source) was solved by reinstalling the missing PreferencesPanes files with *Pacifist 2.5*: I extracted the /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ files from the Leopard install disk (very cool software! and no restart was needed to verify the success of the operation).
I did not try to look for the missing files with the following "+Search your Mac for preferencepane using CMD+F. Ensure that you select This Mac and File Name, change Kind to System files and change don't include to include.+"
which I did not understand or kow ow to...
    Thanks a lot again,
ps I will post again if these files go missing again (just for info)
