Preferences Errors in Mavericks

I just migrated to Mavericks.   I wanted to get my iCloud Keychain setup but when I go to preferences iCloud, I see the following error message:  "Preferences Error Could not load iCloud preference pane."
I get the same error when I click on other Preferences, including "Internet Account", "Sharing", "Parental Controls", etc.
Some work fine, e.g. "General", "Dock", "Displays" . . .
Sometimes, when I click on the problem icons, the error is slightly different, and claims that the preference can't open because I have an intel-based mac.   see below:
I have booted in safe-mode and have the same problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dan

  • Mail, Contacts & Calenders in Syetem Preferences Error in Mavericks?

    Hi There
Since I upgraded my iMac to Maverick this error came up ! (See in attached screen shot) Moreover I have attached my iMac information for the better transparency about this issue
also I am not really happy about the tags and definitely prefer the colored labels and I would like to add the colored labels to Mavericks
Is there any ideas and solutions?
    It will be so appreciated

None of your screenshots are showing, did you just paste them into the editor or use the camera icon to insert them (hint: method 2 works, method 1 does not)

  • Preference Error: Could not load sharing preference pane

For some reason my second computer (iMac 27) is no longer showing up on the left pane of any finder window on my MBP. The iMac is running Yosemite and the MBP is running Mavericks. So I open System preferences to see if there is a problem with "Sharing" on the MBP. I'm getting a Preference Error: Could not load sharing preference pane. Do I need to install the update to fix this? I'm not ready to commit to Yosemite completely. I build apps for iOS and Mac and really need to test in both OS environments.

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • Problems with "Printers & Scanners" preference pane under Mavericks

Since installing OS X Mavericks I can no longer print to our WiFi enabled Epson WF-7515 network printer, and attempting to access the "Printers & Scanners" preference pane in System Preferences either produces a Preferences Error which reads "Could not load Printers & Scanners preference pane", or gives a corrupt version of the preference pane which then in turn leads to a different Preferences Error reading "There was an error in Printers & Scanners preference pane".
    * Restarting in Safe Mode gives same results.

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file to the Trash.
Theb visit the Epson website. Download and install v10.9 Mavericks compatible printers.
Then open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners  > Print
Then click + to add the printer.

  • Preferences Errors and Lots of software crashes...

    Heys,
I am very new to this forum, so if this is in the wrong place I apologize!
I have a White MacBook (plastic cover, not aluminum or pro) that I bought in 2008, stupidly, I never got time machine up and running on it. I recently switched to a newer macbook, but realized it's not actually as good as this older one, so I did a Migration Assistant of all my settings and applications from my newer mac over to my older one.
Annoyingly though, now I'm back over here, I'm having issues.
Applications keep crashing (iPhoto in particular, especially when I plug in my iPhone), and whenever I try to change my desktop background I get this come up; "Preferences Error; Could not load Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane."
Does anyone know what's going on here? Any help is very much appreciated!

Thanks for your help but I just can't figure it out. Maybe the Pismo 500 really can't handle the extra memory. But somehow that doesn't seem right. I tried all the fixes and looked at the websites, Dr. Smoke etc., that were suggested but nothing helped.
I can't figure out how to read the ram card to make sure it is the exactly right kind but I got it from a reliable dealer who only deals with Powerbooks. The sticker on the chip reads:
    Samsung
    KOREA 0215
    PC133S - 333 - 542
    M464S6453CKS - L7A
And printed on the chip it says:
    SAMSUNG 214
    K4S510832C-KL75
    Whatever.
I brought the cards back to the dealer once already and got new ones and had the same problem with aps quitting.
I tried running the disk permissions program, removed bad fonts, completely zero'd my machine and put os 10.3 back on to see if maybe it was 10.4 that it wouldn't work with. I ran the Apple Hardware test. No luck!
I then tried one old 128mb card in the bottom and one of the new 512mb cards on top and same problem.
Finally tonight I just left in the one original 128mb card and there is no problem at all!
So I guess it's the ram cards, right?
But the question remains: Why is it quitting aps with 1GB memory installed?
Oh well, I'll check and see if the cards are maybe not exactly the right ones but I think the fellow I'm working with knows his stuff. He's been really good about helping me so the next step, he said, was to take back the second set of 512mb cards and get actual "Apple cards" (whatever that means) and see if they work. Does that sound good?
Thanks for your help and if you have any additional comments I would love to hear 'em.

  • Time machine backup error in Mavericks

I"m getting backup errors in Mavericks when it tries to back up to the Backups.backupdb folder in my 3TB external backup drive.  This happens even when I turn Time Machine off!
This is the error I'm getting (taken from the console) when I manually start a time machine backup:
    10/26/13 9:56:39.268 AM com.apple.backupd[18160]: Starting manual backup
    10/26/13 9:56:40.826 AM com.apple.backupd[18160]: Backing up to /dev/disk2s2: /Volumes/Macbook Pro Backup 3TB/Backups.backupdb
    10/26/13 9:56:46.069 AM com.apple.backupd[18160]: Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/Macbook Pro Backup 3TB/Backups.backupdb/Macbook Pro 25 size:37
    10/26/13 9:56:46.070 AM com.apple.backupd[18160]: Backup failed with error 2: 2
Has anyone seen this?  At this point, I haven't been able to back up anything after upgrading to Mavericks, and I really don't want to delete the backup folder and start over.
I thought it might be a permissions problem, so I tried to use the disk utility to verify this.  I wasn't able to select verify or repair disk permissions.  When I tried to verify the disk, I got a 'Live file system repair is not supported' error.  I've never seen this before.
Any thoughts on all of this?

I fixed this by hard booting, then repairing the disk.  A restart didn't work.

  • Failed to load preferences error on upgrade of Anyconnect to 3.0.3054 on my MAC OSX LION 10.7.1

    Hi Folks,
Since the upgrade of Anyconnect to 3.0.3054 on my MAC OSX LION 10.7.1, i have been getting
failed to load preferences error. During the upgrade the vpn connection get established, but once
i disconnect and try to connect again its starts bombing on "failed to load preferences". For now
i keep uninstalling anyconnect and reinstall an older version which while autoupgrading to 3.0.3054
is able to connect for the first time. Its getting very painful. Any help from the support team will be
    appreciated!

I had the same issue and it is due to corrupted preferences.xml file under /opt/cisco/vpn/profile directory. Easy way to fix is uninstall the client and remove the profile directory under /opt/cisco/vpn. Removing the profile directory requires a root access on MAC OS X.

  • Preferences error - could not load displays preference pane

My screen resolution changed during game play. Now that the game is off, I cant change it back. This is what the error message says "Preferences Error - Could not load Displays preference pane."

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Preferences error: Could not load Accounts preferance pane.

When trying to access my accounts tab under system preferences, it does the usual "must restart system preferences" fiasco to boot into 32-bit mode. After it relaunches, it displays an error message:
    *Preferences Error:*
Could not load Accounts preference pane.
I've searched the apple support forums, google, insanelymac, and have not come up with a solution. So far, I've tried:
-Deleting the system preference... preference under account -> library -> preferences -> com.apple.systempreferences.plist
-Under system -> library -> preferencepanes I am running version 3.0 of Accounts.prefPane
-I have booted from the system disk and repaired permissions along with disk
-I tried restoring an older version of Accounts.prefPane from my time machine back-up, and I receive the same error. (this did not happen in 10.5.8)
Any help is appreciated. It's rather important that I access my accounts tab, haha. If worse comes to worse, I'll just wipe my entire system and do a fresh install. (something I'd rather avoid.) For the record, I did do a simple install of Snow Leopard instead of a clean install.
    Cheers!

    Hello Mr:
When trying to access my accounts tab under system preferences, it does the usual "must restart system preferences" fiasco to boot into 32-bit mode. After it relaunches, it displays an error message:
    Preferences Error:
Could not load Accounts preference pane.
I have never seen that nor did I experience it myself.
Before you do an erase and install (there is no +"clean install"+ in Apple parlance), I would reinstall OS X 10.6 (over your current installation). Frankly, the message makes no sense (I am not suggesting it did not happen).

  • Preferences Error

When I try to edit my Users and Groups settings in System Preferences an error message pops up saying:
    Preferences Error
Could not load Users & Groups preference pane
    Can anybody help?

Perhaps you should try repairing the hard drive and permissions.

  • Preferences Error - Could not load Network

My dad just bought me a (used)) iBook g4 to replace my old one. It's running 10.3.9. It didn't come with a wireless card, so I ordered an Airport Extreme and installed it. I'm pretty sure I installed it correctly, I heard all the right clicks.
It booted up afterwards and the first thing I did was to run system update and try to get everything up to date. There were a ton. After it restarted, it no longer was connecting to our wirelesss network. I tried to go to System Preferences > Network and it responds with the error message "Preferences Error - Could Not Load Network" and nothing opens. Not to mention my DVD Player no longer works!
I have no idea what's at fault here- the airport extreme card, a bad update... And no idea how to fix it! Any help would be appreciated!

That it is not recognizing the retail (thanks cornelius) Leopard DVD is a problem indeed.
It should be plugged into the mains power, as the CD/DVD drive uses a lot of power when it is spinning.
Back to your About this Mac, does it mention that your optical drive can read DVDs?
On mine this info is located down the list under ATA which will have mentioned, CD
and in detail in the lower window
eg. Drive type: CD - RW/ DVD - ROM
if it shows the DVD-ROM part, that indicates it can read DVDs.
If it should be able to, then I wonder if the iBook's optical drive is OK. I could suggest loading another DVD into it, but you say DVD Player.app is missing.
What you could try is buying from a computer shop a CD drive cleaning kit, and following the instructions, run that through it. That is a fairy inexpensive exercise.
If it still does not recognize the DVD, and you had another Mac that you could connect by Firewire Target Disk mode, you could try installing leopard on it that way. But before that rather complex arrangement, try the disk cleaner. It might be a quick fix.

  • Preferences Error. Could not load Dictation & Speech preferences pane.

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and encountered this error when trying to open the Dictation & Speech preferences pane,
"Preferences Error. Could not load Dictation & Speech preference pane."
    Has anyone encounter this?
    Thanks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to open the preference pane. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Preferences error: Could not load preference pane

Many times, when I attempt to load a Preference Pane, I receive the error message: "Preferences Error: Could not load [X] preference pane.” Clicking “OK” and reopening the preference pane succeeds.
Does anyone know what's going on here? I upgraded to Yosemite from a Snow Leopard installation, which I assume is part of the problem.

Right click each  one of those and select " Move To Trash" from the contextual menu.
