Preferences - General pane is borked

Hi all,
I just got a new MBP and migrated my user info from my old MBP... the new MBP is obviously running Mavericks (fully updated), the old one was running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). When I view the General pane of the System Preferences, the display appears borked, as in the following screenshot:
In particular, note the text to the right of the Appearance submenu (which is cut off), and the text to the left of the recent items submenu (which is also cut off).
This error does NOT occur when viewing the General pane from a different user account, even one that was migrated from the old machine... clearly, something is messed up with my migrated preferences someplace. I would really prefer to be able to keep my existing account and just reset the preferences, rather than having to migrate everything to a new account... any idea what I need to reset? I tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist but that didn't do anything...
Any advice would be most appreciated. This appears to be a cosmetic issue but I'm worried it might affect something else later on.
On a related note... if I did want to just wipe my user account and start fresh, how can I migrate all my files and application preferences (if not system preferences) to a new account easily? That is, without having to worry about messed-up file permissions, etc. and having to redo all of my application prefs.

Well, I didn't ever "fix" it, no. In the end, I decided to just start fresh with a new user account and manually migrate everything that was important, allowing 6-12 years' worth of detritus (preferences and support files for applications that were obsolete or no longer even installed) to fade away. Whatever was causing this issue was obviously part of that detritus (I guess obsolete preferences in still-used files, causing a prefererence conflict).
I don't think it's a bug in the Migration Assistant more so than a bug in some part of OS X itself that is glitching on some old, obsolete, possibly corrupt preference value(s) in one or more plist files somewhere.
I'd file an official bug report but I think Apple will probably ignore it since it would only affect people migrating with fairly mature accounts (ones that had migrated a few times prior) and might also be incredibly difficult to track down. I suppose I could file it anyway... but it would be difficult for me to bug-test, as well, since I don't really want to re-migrate my old user now that it's been a couple of months.
Bleh.

The first thing I would suggest is for you to go to the folder containing your catalog, using your system browser. There will be a folder that has the extension .lrdata. Delete that folder, and then try to start Lightroom. If that doesn't work, replace your catalog with your most recent backup.

There is no "book box in preferences' general".
There is a new iBooks application that appears on Mavericks' dock. It looks like this:

The preset time (Edit Preferences General) doesn't work

The preset time (Edit>Preferences>General) of the Still Images Default Duration doesn't work.
I have several times tried. No result.
What to do?

Changing the value does not apply to already imported stills.
You need to delete them and re-import.
Or just change the duration in the Project Window.

Did Adobe forget to include the new "Preserve Details" algorithm in Preferences General Image Interpolation?

In Photoshop CC 2014, if I open the "Image Size" dialog, using CTRL-I, I can choose which resample algorithm to use such as Automatic, and the new "Preserve Details" among others.
But when I go into: Preferences > General > Image Interpolation
The new "Preserve Details" algorithm is not listed. Did Adobe forget to include this? How do I tell Photoshop CC to use the new algorithm when using tools such as Crop?

I still say that an adaptation of the "Preserve Details" function to be a general purpose image resampling tool (e.g., for use in crops, transforms, etc.) would be WELL worth Adobe doing.

Logic X: Missing menu items in Preferences/General

I am missing some menu items in Preferences/General: under the "Editing" Tab the right mouse menu is missing, and the entire "Cycle" tab is also not visible. Can anyone please help me to understand what the reason might be? Thanks!

My Macbook Air does not have a place to check to allow Handoff in my System Preference (General). I have updated to Yosemite.

Trying to use Handoff. I've read where I need to go to the System Preferences - General - and check to allow Handoff. There is no place to checkmark that. I have updated to Yosemite.

What model (i.e., how old) is your MacBook Air? Note the following from Help for that System Preference screen:
Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices
(not available on all computers)
If your Mac supports Handoff, select to turn on Handoff between your Mac and iOS devices set up with iCloud. For more information, see Pick up where you left off with Handoff.

My Premiere CS4 freezes when try to edit preferences/general settings/start new project

First, sorry for my english, i'm argentinian. I got this wired error every time i try to start a new project, click on "new project" tab, and it freezes with not even show me the list of formats, then i have to force to close program. The same when i change something on preferences, and hit ACEPT, frezees. The same when try to enter to GENERAL settings of a project. Tryed everithing, reset perferences file, re-install, once i unninstall it, try the clean utility and it tell's me that is no entry in the registry with an adobe program.

hi, no, i don't have any capture card. And plugins, just magic bullet looks 3. I tryed to delete all plugins too before with no response. I'll try the saving location thing, then tell you how it goes. In the other hand, i always do everything like this, and suddenly this happens. Holly PC's.

Do you have any capture cards in the computer? For example, Blackmagic, Aja, Matrox, CineForm, etc.
If so, it's software might be causing the problem. Go to "Programs And Features" in the Vista Control Panel to remove the software for the capture card. Restart the computer and then try again.
Did you install any plug-ins for Premiere?
If so, remove them and see if the problem goes away.
Also, where are you saving your projects? Try saving one to your Desktop and see if you still have the problem. If you don't, then it could be a problem with your save location.

1. Export it to a folder on the desktop. File -> Export

Both elements 12 and premiere elements 12 crash and close when I click on edit - preferences - general

Elements 12 organizer crashes and say it has to close when I click on edit, preferences, general. Also, the text displayed on the organizer screen (such as the menu bar and the folder list in the sidebar) are so tiny I almost need a magnifying glass to read the words. How can I enlarge the font of the text? What do I need to do to resolve the oraganizer crashing and closing problem?

You cannot import Premiere Elements Windows project files (prel) into a Mac version and vice versa. That I am sure on.
Files with the Mac preferred .mov and .mp4 should be expected to import.
The rest that you mention are probably under the should import but may need conversion, like mpg to mov.
But you need to make the distinction between files that will not import because of file properties versus how you
are importing the files into the project. What happens if you transfer some copies of your media stored to the external drive
to wherever one saves video to in Mac and then try to import the media into the project from there.

Preferences, Accounts Pane Blank

When I try to open my accounts pane in System Preferences, the page is blank. I can't change any of the 'start up' applications. Any help?

See if this fixes it:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.

Eclipse Preferences General Node

In my RCP application, am working with Jobs API and i need to uncheck "General->Run in background" preference programmatically.

I need to have node id for "General->Run in background". how to get to know the id for each page and specific item?

I have 3 problem.
Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane.
Could not load iCloud preference pane.
I also can't open the Mail application.
I already tried to log in as guest user, I can open everything in guest user. So guest user have no problem.
I also tried to log in in safe mode, nothing was working. So I guess I have problem with the admin user.
I also reinstall the operating system and nothing change.
Please any help?

Do a backup.
Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Preferences/General - How do I get it to save?

I don't want my apps to open previous windows. When I go into Prefs/General and unclick "Restore windows when quitting...," and close prefernces, it doesn't save it. When I re-open Prefs/General, it's checked again.

open terminal and type in
killall Finder
press enter
killall Dock
press enter
killall Terminal
press enter
try changing this preference again. if that doesn't work restart your computer but uncheck the check box that comes up
