Preferences icons have changed

Both my System and Home preferences icons have changed to that of a text editor which I recently downloaded but have not yet used. I was trouble-shooting an issue in which my desktop sounds were not happening; i.e., the Trash emptying made no sound, I had no start-up chimes and no sound of dragging and dropping a file. I have still not resolved that issue. Any answers would be welcome. But, the strangest thing is the fact that all my Preference files have this Smultron icon. I had simply put my Preference folder on the Desktop and then rebooted to see if the Desktop sounds would return. When they didn't, I replaced the Preferences folder and found that all my Preference files had this icon. The icon also shows on my System Preferences which I did not touch or move in this process. Any clues?

I am having the same problem but with an icon from a different editor, BBEdit. Both my System and Home preference icons have changed. I first noticed a problem when I returned to my computer, from which I had not logged out, after stepping away from it for a while. My mail looked funny; the font for the mailboxes had changed and the header type was not formatted in the usual fashion. I logged in as the admin and checked its preferences. All the preference icons for both the admin account and the system are as they should be, while logged in as admin. That makes me think it is a problem with my user account only. I went to the Cache folder in the Library in my user account and dumped the "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache" file (as someone had suggested in another, earlier discussion thread.) It straightened out my mail but did not help my preference icons. Feedback; suggestions; answers?

  • System Preference Icons have changed

    Hi
The Speech and Startup disc Icons in my system preferences pane have changed to something like a switch.
The other accounts on the same mac have no such problems.
    Any suggestions?
    THanks

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter ~/Library/Caches/ as the folder's path. Once this folder has appeared, locate the com.apple.preferencepanes.cache item and drag it to the desktop. Open System Preferences again. Mac OS X 10.4 does not create or use any items starting with LS or .LS in the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder.

  • File Icons have changed

I just noticed that all of my pdf file icons have changed to the iTunes icon.
Would anyone have any idea why this may have happened and how to change them back?
There are no problems with opening or viewing the files - they still open in Preview - but in the Finder they show up as the iTunes icon? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    AK

Great suggestion - thanks! It did change the icon globally - but then when I switched it back to Preview - it went back to the 'iTunes' icon.
Where can I go to change the Preview icon (which is probably want's broken)?
Preview icon is kept inside Preview application package. control-click on Preview.app and select "show package contents". go to Contents->Resources. the file is called preview.icns. However, there is no way that file got substituted by the itunes icon. Morte likely something is wrong with the Launch services database.
Try the following. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and log out/in. if that doesn't help run the following command in terminal
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

After installing Windows 7 my desktop Adobe icons have change in appearance. How do I change them back?

The file icons is one on the change features MS removed from the Explorer options. Supposedly you can do the change with the registry, though I have not figured out that option. If you want to try, backup the registry first and then you might try the instructions at How to Change a File Type Icon in Windows 7 and Vista - The Winhelponline Blog. If the application icon is not correct, try to fix that before the approach above. Good luck and be careful (dealing with the registry can make your computer not work..

  • Icon have changed to preview icons

Hi.I use PEAK as an audio editor which uses its own file icon.Just recently all my normal peak icons suddenly changed in to what I guess must be Preview icons, the ones with the semi-quaver,a bit like itunes. Also every time I save something in peak the original peak icon changes. I have set the files to open in peak in the get info but it still makes no difference. Any ideas why and how can I stop this! Thanks,Tony

Ok, this is happening every time I launch Photoshop, the Layer Panel options "Show thumbnails" box is turned off by default, and I have to go in and turn it on again each time.
I recall recently that an AppleCare support tech, in an effort to fix some Mac Mail issues, had me throw away a folder in the Library, maybe Prefs?, and restart. This is the only thing I've done to my system in recent memory. No upgrades, no new apps, nothing else i can come up with...
Would really like to resolve this! Any ideas? thanks

  • App icons have changed appearance

I have downloaded a ton of apps. SOME of the icons have taken on the appearance of some of the other icons. I have deleted the app and reinstalled them. Didn't work. Did a complete reset. No go. Is this a gliche? I synched, no go. I have not upgraded to 3.1 or itunes9. Should I? Why would this phone do this? Is it defective? Has anyone run across this problem? Can I change the icons? Thanks to you all !!

iPhone OS 3.1 fixes the issue that caused some app icons to display incorrectly.

  • Blue N9 icons have "changing pixels" on the edges ...

This is very hard to explain but when I swipe the played video slowly away the blue N9 icons starts to "glow" on the edges. It's like the video is playing in the background of the icon and changing pixels and making it glowing on the edges. No other color icons makes the glow.
Hard to explain but do you guys experience same kind of problem? This swiping move while watching video was a really good marketing thing.

My friend's white N9 had this icon issue too, but not my second issue, pinkish stripes on screen when browsing web in landscape.
I sent my N9 for repair because of the pink issue, this was my second N9, got new one day after purchase 2 weeks ago. Both had pink and icon issue.

  • The Toolbar Icons have changed size - can I change them back to the original size?

Icons were good before update to 31.5.0

I'm not sure what version of TB you were using before, but there has not been any changes to size of toolbars, menus or icons in the recent versions.
Check your graphics driver, maybe it needs to be updated.
Maybe you were using an addon and either is not enabled or needs updating:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/theme-font-size-changer/
Maybe you used a much older version of Thunderbird and are now seeing a different toolbar. You can get all the toolbars back. See image below.

  • Most of my desktop icons have changed to itunes icons....

Most of my desktop icons and all of my quick taskbar icons changed to itunes icons after upgrading to 10.4.....
I uninstalled itunes and reinstalled using version 9 and the problem has returned.
For now I've removed all itunes software and my computer seems to be OK.
Is there a fix for this????

    Hi,
This might be caused by service conflict, I suggest to perform a clean boot in this way:
1.Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
2.Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click msconfig.
3.On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.
4.On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager.
5.On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click Disable.
    6.Close Task Manager.
7.On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.

  • Indesign File Icon has changed to generic looking icon

I just upgraded to Adobe Indesign CC and now all of my file icons have turned into a white, generic-looking icon.  Can anyone tell me how to get the icon to look like the Indesign icon again?  Thanks in advance.
    David

I have a similar question.  We installed ID CS6 a few weeks ago, and when looking at files, I could determine which version of ID to open the files in by the different icons for CS4 and CS6.  Overnight, all of my icons have changed to a white box with a purple/pink square with ID in the middle, no matter which version the files were saved in.  Because we have to proofread any documents that move from CS4 to CS6 before using them (and don't have the time to do that with each document), it was very helpful to know which version to open the file in before opening it and finding that it was opened with the wrong version and having to start over again.  We are on Windows 7 PCs.  Any help you could give us would be appreciated.  We still have both versions of ID on our PCs.  Here is a screen shot that might help:

  • My web page short cut icons have chnged

My O/S is Windows 7 and I use the latest Firefox.
I have trouble with some of the Icons for web page short cuts, that I save to the Desktop. I make these short cuts from the Firefox browser on to my Desktop, using the drag and drop method. When I make a short cut, I keep the icon that automatically appears with it, which is specific to that particular web page. Some of the icons have changed arbitrarily. This happened after I cleaned the Computer using a third party programme. I tried making new short cuts after deleting these, but the same wrong icons keeps coming back.
See the two icons in attachment. One is showing the proper icon for g-mail and the other just a blank wrong icon.
How can I get back the original icons for these short cuts?
    Thank you

You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache and try to rebuild the icon cache.
    # Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
    # In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
    # Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
    # Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (%LocalAppData%) in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
    # Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
    # After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

  • How do I get rid of Bing and adware on my macbook? I have changed the preferences on Safari to google, and tried to download an adware remover, but things are now worse!

Hi can anyone help me to get rid of Bing and all sorts of Adware on my macbook which arrive everytime I use Safari? I have changed the Safari preferences but Bing won't go away, and worse, it comes up with adverts. I also seem to be losing things I do want - like VLC player-  its creepy

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
If you find Apple's instructions too hard to follow, ask for an alternative that doesn't require you to trust a black-box application without knowing what it does.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

I have changed default language in the program & have set Language & region in system preferences. My Word (Mac2011) keeps on changing the default language to US english every time I check. Please help!

If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
