I would try to remove the .plist file for ical. Close iCal>from you home folder goto Library>Preferences>and delete com.apple.iCal.plist and see what that does for you.

Since upgrading to Firefox 36, preference panes will not open properly

When I open Firefox preferences, the only tab that opens is GENERAL. All the others (Tabs, Search, Content, Applications, Privacy, Security, Sync and Advanced do not open. The window is too small to view any of the content, "maximize" does not work, and the window cannot be resized.

I installed No Squint, but all it does is change the size of the font. This is easily accomplished without any add-ons at all (by using the plus or minus sign with the command key). What I am trying to do is change the font on webpages - from Times Roman to Helvetica. But this seems an impossible task.
I am grateful for your help but it amuses me that whenever something goes wrong immediately following an upgrade, I am told I must have corrupt files. Could the problem not be with the upgrade itself? In future I will wait until all the bugs are ironed out and considerable time has passed before installing a new Firefox version.

Security Preferences Pane does not open

Hi,
after installing Snow Leopard my Security Preferences Pane is not working anymore. When clicking on the security preferences I got the message that it is loading, but it is never opened.
In the logs I found the following messages:

I have no clue how to fix the problem and I'd be very happy if some of you has a suggestion.

Delete this file.
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
~/Library/Preferences.
Move that fille to the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, create or logon to another user account and see if the problem exists there also.
If it doesn't, then the issue is system wide, otherwise it's isolated to your user account only.
System wide or not you could download and install the 10.6.2 combo update and see if that helps. You can do this even if you are already running 10.6.2. It contains fixes that might help.

After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Why is iCal not opening? Is it the fault of Lion?

Hi, I wonder if anybody out there can help med? On my MacBook iCal won't open at all. I'm not very sure when the problem started, possibly when I installed some more memory and Lion. I'm now on OSX 10.7.4. Does that mean that my old iCal should be deleted and a new one downloaded – where from?

Josabet,
Try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find Library folder, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop.
Also, when you are in the Library Folder, open the Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Log out/in, or restart and check iCal for functionality.

Preference panes do not open from menu bar extras

Hello.
I have an annoying problem : the preference panes in system preferences work well but the shortcuts to open them from the menu bar extras do not.
For example, when I choose "open bluetooth preferences" in the bluetooth menu bar extra, nothing happens.
But I can ver y well get to the bluetooth preferences in system preferences.
Same goes for all Apple or non-Apple menu bar extras which give the option of accessing a system prenerences pane : bluetooth, MenuMeters, Salling Clicker, Apple 's battery meter, Date &Time (those are the ones I use).
I tried removing the menu extras and re- enabling them, repaired permissions, checked permissions on the menu extras (with Applecare), re-ran the 10.4.5 combo update ... with no effect.
I think this started after I used Onyx (what a bad idea ...) for "regular" maintenance.
This is just annoying. Applecare tells me to archive and install.
I'd love to have a less invasive solution : except this annoying problem, my Mac works perfectly. And "archive and install" is quite time consuming since it is not that innocent with Apple or 3rd party pro apps.
I remember I had a similar issue with my old Mac by the times of Puma or Jaguar. There was an easier solution than "archive and install" by that time.
If anyone has any idea, I would really appreciate it.

The first thing to do is to remove any third party products that use the menu bar. Apple has advised developers from the day OS X came out to not use the menu bar for anything. They made it off limits for whatever reasons they have.
Of course some developers came up with hacks so that they could use it. Many of us, including me, like them but sometimes they cause problems. That is why I suggest starting there. Remove them and then re check your disk permissions and also run disk utility on your drive to insure that you don't have other issues.
This may not solve the problem but it is a good place to start.

Accounts preference pane will not open

When I try to open the Accounts preference pane in system preferences it says "Loading Accounts..." in the header bar but nothing happens. If I again select the Accounts icon the preference pane goes blank. I have no idea when this started because I don't need to access this pane often. How do I gain access to my account setups?

There is a way to do it in 10.4.x from the command line, but I wouldn't attempt it unless I was very familiar with the command line. You may a little afraid to do it yourself, but here is the list of commands:

There needs to be a valid home directory, shell, and/or SharedDir for the user. A home directory can be created as easily as:
sudo mkdir /Users/username
sudo chown username:staff /Users/username
Or if you want the default OS X user directory structure:
sudo cp -rp /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj /Users/username
sudo chown -R username:staff /Users/username

Additional info:
To change an admin user back to an ordinary user:
sudo niutil -destroyval . /groups/admin users username
Be careful to leave at least one accessible admin user, otherwise you will lock yourself out of your machine.
after changing netinfo:
sudo niutil -resync .
log out and in the user you changed.

ICal not opening correctly

Updated to 10.5.1. iCal opens with strange empty window. The date on the Dock updates correctly but the open window in incomplete, unfamiliar and doesn't respond except to close. No error messages.

After launching iCal, have you looked in /Applications/Utilities/Console.app for error messages? You said "no error messages" but I wasn't sure where you already looked.

ICal not opening

I cannot access my iCal. Regardless of how I have tried to open (menu bar or through applications) I cannot open it.

Please provide the exact text of the error message you are getting and what you are doing when that message appears (click on the iCal icon in the dock to open it, adding an event, etc.)
Make sure your software is entirely up to date by going to Apple Menu > Software update.

Preferences window does not open, only makes firefox window inactive but preferences window never shows up.

Firefox 3.6 preferences work normally, tested also with ff 3.6 removed.

You should check to see if an add-on is interfering with the process. See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].

IPhoto preferences will not open

My preferences menu will not open; I cannot change anything! What steps should I take? (I have Version 7.1.4)

Try this frequently recommended procedure.
Quit iPhoto and delete your iPhoto preferences. Go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.iphoto.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iPhoto; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.

Safari Preferences Will Not Open

Hi,
Have a weird Safari issue:
When I go to Safari->Preferences or use the key combo, nothing happens. The preferences window will not open.
Also a list of other issues:
     The "find" (apple F) option is greyed out for all webpages.
     "Reset Safari" is greyed out.
     An inordinate number of popups.
It thought maybe adware, but its a fresh install of Yosemite with no safari extensions. Scanned for adware with AdwareMedic, nothing. Nothing with ClamXav. No Mackeeper, no geneio. I've run out of possibilities! Any ideas?
It's safari 8.0.3 (though was happening with the previous version as well), on 10.10.2. Firefox is also getting a lot of popups, but can "find".

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

        Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
        The results are on the Clipboard.
        Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

Screen Saver portion of System Preference App with 10.9.5 will not open

Screen saver with System Preference application will not open. All other Systemitems work fine.

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.screensaver". There may be several such files. Move them to the Trash.
Log out or restart the computer. Test. If the problem is resolved. recreate your settings in the Screen Saver tab.

Ical, isync will not open after restoring ilife 04 onto tiger

Hi,
I've just used my old 10.3.5 disks to reinstall ilife on a powerbook that is now running tiger (for whatever reason, iphoto and imovie disappeared upon upgrade while the other applications didn't). Perhaps stupidly, I reinstalled all the extra applications on the disc, including ical and isync, instead of just the ones I needed. Everything works except for these two - the ical icon has changed to a piece of paper, pencils, and a ruler, and won't open, just giving one bounce and then quitting without a message. Same for isync, except the icon has stayed the same.
Most of the fixes I've looked at for ical not opening mentioned clearing something in isync but i can't get at it! any suggestions?

iLife '04 was bundled with your computer, and it should be located on your Software Install and Restore DVD, not a Panther disc.

Burn preferences will not open

The burning preferences tab will not open! in fact when clicked it locks up itunes. Itunes then has to be closed and restarated! windows says itunes is not responding.
the dvd/cd drive works for all other applications. all other features and itunes functions work properly.

okay, let's try see if it's a systemwide issue, or if it is associated with a specific XP user account.
let's try an experiment.
head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now log out of the old account and log into the new account.
launch itunes. the itunes setup assistant will run, and eventually you'll see a blank library screen. (that's normal ... your music is off in the other account.)
now try opening the burning preferences tab in the itunes in the new account. does it open properly, or does it freeze there too?
