"Preferences" in Safari missing

Hi
With this latest version of Safari when I click on Preferences all I get is the autofill menu. No way to change home page etc. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Evelyn

And if there isn't an oval, quit Safari (Safari menu > Quit) delete the following file and then restart Safari:
Hard drive > Users > Your Username > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist

  • Preferences keep going missing

This is really strange. On my Mac Pro (quad core) running 10.5.1, I keep having preferences go missing. This didn't start happening until after I'd upgraded to Leopard and started using Time Machine for backups, but I can't pinpoint the cause.
I had been using a notepad program called Sidenote which stores notes in ~/Library/Application Support/Sidenote. One day, all the notes were gone and I had to restore them using Time Machine.
I use a utility called Textpander that does autotyping. Several times now I've tried to activate it to find all my preferences gone. Those are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Textpander. I had to restore the settings with Time Machine each time.
Twice now, after plugging in my iPhone and going to iTunes, I've found that the checkboxes in the Info tab to sync the Address Book, Calendar and Safari bookmarks have been unchecked. I have no idea where those settings are kept. Luckily, the settings in all the other tabs seem unaffected.
I have to wonder what other of my preferences are going missing and I haven't noticed yet. Nobody else uses my Mac. I don't run much "weird" software. My Mac never sleeps; it stays on all day and all night unless I have to restart it for some reason or I'm going away for the weekend.
    What could possibly cause this?

There is a display bug, but it still works okay -
I prefer Arial to the default Helvetica, so that's what I set -
When I first open a new message window, it displays Helvetica as the font -
However, as soon as I type the first character, it switches to showing Arial as the font -
    ...and actually enters in Arial.

  • Preferences in safari changes

Why does my preferences for safari changes every time I start it?

It might just be registering the last time you opened Safari to be able to send relavent crash reports if there should happen to be a crash.  Note, unless you specifically ask it to send said crash information to Apple it won't.

  • How do you get to preferences in safari on ipad2

How do you get to preferences in safari on ipad2

    Tap  Settings / Safari.
Not the same as Safari for Mac but you can select your preferred search engine, select AutoFill, Bookmarks Bar...  etc.
If you have problems with Safari for the iPad, click the History / Cookies and Cache. That usually helps.

  • Can't access Preferences in Safari 5.0.5

I have an older Mac Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Safari 5.0.5. I've been unable to access Preferences in Safari--half the time the web page doesn't change, the other half the program crashes.
    Any ideas?

I'd try opening up any Music Project, or Podcast Episode (a garageband project) and trying it. However; I can access GB Prefs while not having a project open. Might be just you, or just me. Either way, try opening up a project.

I found this discussion about three or four months ago. I was having the same problem with Safari not opening, along with my other login items.
The tip posted by Linc on Oct 3, 2011 9:22 AM, resolved the issue.
    Thanks Linc!
HOWEVER... Today, all of the sudden... Out of out of the blue... I have the same problem, again!?
I tried removing, then re-adding, the URL file from the log in items, automatic open list.
    It did not work?
Does anybody have any ideas/solutions regarding this issue? This is becoming VERY aggravating!

  • TS3274 safari missing on iPad

safari missing on my iPad hard reset will not solve my problem

Look in Settings>General>Restrictions. Is Safari restricted? If so, the icon will disappear.
Swip from screen to screen and see if you moved it to another screen.
You can also reset the home screen layout and the icon will reappear - but the home screen will return to the way that it looked when you first activated your iPad.
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.

  • Safari missing plug-in for video

When I try to watch a video on www.apple.com (with Safari on my iMac), the message "Missing Plug-in" is shown, instead of the video. Which plug-in do I need?

Problem solved. Safari Preferences >> Extensions: Uninstall DivX.

  • LION - Safari missing plug-in

Well, LION 10.7.1 is here....informing us "Address an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari"....
the  "Missing plug-in" issue has not been fixed, no change at all.
Not sure what kind of UAT testing they conduct....but its obviously not that extensive...
And no options to re-install LION Safari yourself....
So we all have to just hope someone at Apple....does something...as this is embarrassing as we cant even watch there own promo movies on there own web site...on their own software..   FAIL!

I had the same problem when I upgrade to Lion. Here is how I was able to fix the issue:
In Safari, go to Preference and then Extensions. Look for the DivX extension and delete it.
Then test to see if you can successfully view videos.
You may want to then download Perian <http://perian.org> which is a popular QuickTime component which allows you to watch many formats including DivX.

  • Dashboard preferences file is missing. Causes my CPU to run at 100%

I have Mid 2009 MBP here. Since I've upgraded to mavericks my computer has been running extremely hot and my fan as been speeding at 6200 rpm all the time. I figured out that the dashboard is not responding and in the activity monitor it says it is using about 95% of my cpu. after researching this online people have deleted the preferences file for dashboard and it fixed the issue when they rebooted. I don't have a dashboard preferences file! I've looked and looked and looked but I can't find it. When the system reboots it is supposed to automatically regenerate any missing preferences files, mine apparently doesn't regenerate dashboards file. Please help!!!! I feel like my computer is going to melt! Here's a link to a screen shot of my activity monitor http://imgur.com/4VaxmB4

My PC runs at high rates too. And I too like to use iTunes at the same time I use Safari.
And there's no quick solution to this...at least not yet. But here are few tips and tricks that you can apply to get this thing half solved.
    1. First of all, if you don't intended to watch images while browsing, You can turn it off...Simply by going to 'Edit> Preferences> Apperance (Tab)' and from there deselect ' Display images when the page opens'
    2. Secondly, Don't open too much tabs if it's not needed.
    3. Thirdly, if you're using Safari for a few hours. Just try to close the whole window time to time. And after reopening get back to the last session (View) by selecting History> Reopen all windows from last session'
This will probably help you. Btw, these tricks are exclusives from me. Happy Surfing buddy!

  • Safari missing images

A couple of weeks ago I started to have problems with Safari not loading images on websites i visit often (sonyalpharumors, wunderground).
It became quite frustrating so I would empty cache, clear history etc, & that seemed to work for 30 mins or so & then images started missing again.
Then it also started happening on my computer at work, also running 10.8.5 & Safari 6.
It happens several time a day & is strangely intermittant - EG: i can visit a site, several images are missing - refresh several times, still missing. Come back 5 mins later & refresh, the images load.
I started using chrome & the same images always load without a problem.
    For an example: http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/western-pacific/2013/Typhoon-Fitow
The large map & all the small icon maps are missing in safari 75% of the time.
Its happening on 2 seperate computers, which is really weird. What can I do?
    SAFARI
    CHROME

    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Test.
    Step 2
If there's no improvement, follow the instructions on the page linked below.

  • IOS Safari missing webpage icons

Something that has annoyed me since iOS 7 launched (both iPad and iPhone) is that the Safari "new tab" page, which shows icons for favorite bookmarks, shows only generic gray or colored icons with the safari logo for certain websites rather than the sites' favicons. Is there a way to force iPad and iPhone to load the favicon for the bookmarks? Or am I stuck with looking at the gray icons?

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Appearance tab.
Tick the box next to: Display images when the page opens
All of those icons are gone either when loading a website (i.e. if I go to google's homepage, the "G" is missing in the URL bar) and all of the icons are missing from my bookmarks.
    Webpage icons can get corrupted.
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
The tilde "~" character represents your home folder.
    Relaunch Safari.

  • Flash Player stopped working in Safari - Missing Plugin alert - HELP

All of a sudden, while surfing web pages with Flash Content, statrted showing a "MISSING PLUG-IN" alert.
    I work with:
IMAC 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
MAC OS 10.4.11 and Safari 4.1.3.
I followed all Flash player  troubleshooting guides.
    Refreshed page
    Uninstalled Flash
Installed latest version of Flash 10.2.153.1
    Verified permissions with Disk Doctor
Re-installed Safari (According to hardware / software requirements latest installable version is  Safari 4.1.3.)
    Re-installed Flash
Flash Still not working with Safari
What baffles me is that it works fine on latest version of Firefox 3.6.16
I've been working for quiete some time on Safari - so changing back to a different browser will be the last resort.
    Thanks to all.

    Worked for me at least...
"I had a similar problem with a few image types. The fix for me was to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES > QUICKTIME > ADVANCED, click on MIME SETTINGS and then USE DEFAULTS.
I dunno if it broke more than it fixed, but everything started working again and I've noticed no adverse affects. I think, for me, a recent flash player update messed up a few mime settings.
In any case, I hope this helps! "

  • Why is text box at top of Safari missing?

I was on vacation and since returning, the Safari browser home page looks different and most importantly, the text box at the top of the page where I'd type in the URL of a web site I want to go to is missing.  (The text box is GONE.)

    Hi William
I'm guessing that it's not just that your 'home page' which opens with a new window, or when Safari starts, is wrong ? (if it is that, you can alter it in Safari - Preferences - General)
It sounds like some sort of add-on or extension has changed Safari (a screenshot would help, if you can)
Extensions can be disabled/selected in Safari - Preferences - Extensions
other add-ons can be in the folders listed at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3230
If it's not an extension, and you can't find any other add-on - please post a screenshot if possible, and also test briefly in a New User Account, since that will tell us where to look
