Preferences reset at startup in all newer versions including 7.0.1
In every updated version I get, I have to fight this issue. In the past deleting the pref file was the fix. Then in the last versions, it was deleting the localstore file. Now that does not fix the trouble.
I set my toolbars to bookmarks checked, Norton unchecked, Tabs on top unchecked, and maximize the window. Every time I restart windows XP and restart Firefox, the window opens small and all the toolbars revert to default.
What is the latest work around for this issue?

However with 7.0.2 this links suggestions are not working.

After trying all of the above, when I restart, and restarting Firefox, a window pops up that appears to have saved my settings. Then seconds later it closes on its own. Then starting Firefox brings up a window with all the default settings back again.

Reset preferences by InDesign while installing a new version of plugin

Our company developed a Plug-In for InDesign.
This works on InDesign CS5.5 und CS6 for Mac OSX and Windows.
Currently we have developed a new version of this Plug-In.
Old version 1.6 and new version 2.0.
On an InDesign with Plug-In version 1.6 we have trouble if we trying to install version 2.0.
Here will be reset the preferences by InDesign after successfully installation version 2.0 and at start the InDesign.
After some experiments i have found out, that in “InDesign Defaults” and “InDesign Saved” files exists an entry regarding the plug-In.
After starting my Plug-In 1.6 in InDesign the entry will be added to these files. If i uninstall the Plug-In and start/stop the InDesign i find still the plug-in entry in “InDesign Defaults” and “InDesign Saved” files.
While starting the InDesign after installation the Plug-In 2.0 detect the InDesign a conflict in “InDesign Defaults” and reset the Preferences. See below image
Can i cleanup these files after uninstalling the old Plug-In without losing my Preferences?
Can i prevent the input of the Plug-In entry to these files?I suggest you re-post this over in the InDesign SDK forum. I'll leave it here as well, but it's very unlikely anyone here will have an answer for you.

SDM resetting JCO destination after installing new version.
Every time I reinstall a new version of netweaver developer, I have to edit each JCO destination in order to reset the password. Is there a way to reset password for more than one JCO destination ?

Preferences resetting at startup! So frustrating!
I've recently been having problems with my Ibook, every time I shut down my computer and turn it back on it will reset all of the settings. Dashboard widgets reset, background, dock, power settings, the whole shabang. It's currently ver. 10.4.8 I believe. Not only that but iTunes won't open my library any longer, says it's damaged? And creates a new library every time I start it up. I then am forced to drag and drop my music into iTunes if I want to access it.
Any insight as to why it's doing this is greatly appreciated.I made another dummy user and it set the preferences back to what I'm going to call "factory" for both of them after a reboot. However I was running filevault and I wonder if it would have anything to do with it. I took down filevault and tried it again and I haven't noticed anything change back yet.
And my iTunes problem seems to be fixed by it as well. Does this seem normal or just a fluke in what's hopefully not an ongoing OS X bug. -
Personal File Sharing turns off on startup. Other sharing settings are kept, such as Printer Sharing and Remote Apple Events, but File Sharing turns off every time. Also the sound settings change back to Line In with the volume down every time the computer starts up. I haven't tested all of the System Preferences, but I imagine there's other problems. I've tried trashing all of the user prefs and caches to no effect. Have started in safe mode, run Disk Utility and Diskwarrior. I'm reluctant to reinstall the OS or switch users because I'm in the middle of a project.
Any ideas?I removed the entire preferences folder from the user and restarted to no effect. I moved the folder to my Documents, but didn't trash them. Would that have made a difference?
I don't remember what Disk Utility said, will try it again tomorrow, and I haven't tried booting from the disc. I'll give them a test tomorrow and let you know.

Can someone tell me why every I have to reset my options when a new version of Firefox is released?
So I just installed the latest version, and I had to reset Tabs on Top to false, reset my font because the default is too small for me to see well, reset how I want PDF documents handled (I do NOT want them to open in the browser), and a few other nitpicky things. Is there some reason these preferences cannot be retained between updates?
Prefs should be retained between updates and not get lost.
Do you have nay numbered prefs-##.js file in the Firefox profile folder?
You may have a problem with your security software if you do not keep pref changes.

Preferences resetting every startup?
Okay, so every time I turn on my computer, several of my preferences for my mouse's various buttons have been reset. Not all of them, just some of them. I've got a feeling this may not be resolved until 10.7.3, but I'd thought I'd post it here first. Any suggestions?
Just finished repairing disk permissions as you mentioned. Shut down computer and started it back up again. Same issue. Any other suggestions?

Opening with external editor always makes new version
i am a fine art figure photographer and portrait artist. almost every photo that i want to finish has to be round tripped to photoshop for retouching. in Aperture 1.5, i could select a photo, open in external editor (photoshop cs3), make my retouches and save the new version. if i wanted to re-visit the image and make further modifications, i could select the round-tripped photo, open with external editor, and the edited photo would be opened without creating a new version.
now in Aperture 2.0, once an image is edited and the new version saved, if i try to re-visit the image Aperture always creates a new version. this is a behavior that i don't want. new versions of photoshop edits are expensive when it comes to disk space. and with 30,000 images in my library, i just can't afford it!
in the preferences, i have the option "Create new versions when making adjustments" unchecked. that's the only option i can see that affects the automatic creation of new versions. any advice on how to edit the image without making a copy would be greatly appreciated!

I had the same problem as the OP and was surprised to read that Ian didn't encounter that same behavior. So I started testing several options. This is what I found;
When I open a previously-externally-edited picture from within Aperture, using the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘ O, Aperture automatically creates a new version.
The same thing happens when I choose 'Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS3' from the Images menu in the menu bar.
On the other hand, when I open a previously-externally-edited picture from within Aperture by Ctrl clicking the picture and choosing 'Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS3' from the pop-up menu, the picture opens in Photoshop without Aperture creating a new version first.
Very strange because the pop-up menu command has the same keyboard shortcut as the commands I used in the first and second attempt.

New version and distinct-values
Does the new version include improvements to speed up the distinct-values function?
As a review from ancient history (July), I need to look through thousands of small documents, each with one or more category tags, and generate a list of used categories. This took a very long time to do, and it was determined that the distinct-values function didn't used indexes. Further, we came to a lose conclusion that there was really no way to get decent speed out of this query with the current implementation.
At the time George also mentioned the possibility of future index manipulation methods that could avoid touching the documents at all, pulling the values out of the index itself.Hi Chris,
The new release has an improved distinct-values() function, that uses an O(n log n) algorithm instead of an O(n^2) one. However, it still does not use indexes to optimise it's performance.
It may well be worth you checking it out. If you do, please let us know how it went for you.

my IPAD won't accept my wi-fi password. I have tried resetting all settings and network settings but still won't accept it. Can't download to new version of IOS either, says software update server could not be contacted.
Yes I have put in the correct password, its all numbers so can't get it wrong really.
It has connected before as has my iPod and that won't connect either. I have checked that they aren't on the blocked list of the wi fi. Managed to download the new version of iOS and that hasn't made a difference.
I have the wi fi plugged directly into the computer rather than the booster hub as the computer won't connect to it when its in the hub. I did get the iPad to connect to the internet when it twas in the hub but once I upgraded the iOS it won't accept the wifi password in the hub either. -

When you delete an email from your device, it is only removed from the device, it does not delete your emails or the email account. -
Windows 7 64-bit with MS Outlook 2010. I've seen this now probably 10 times. When I first installed iTunes, I selected:
Preferences -> Devices -> "Prevent iPhonse, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically".
and on my iPhone, I selected:
Info -> Sync Contacts with: Outlook.
Info -> Sync Calendars with: Outlook
Info -> Other -> Sync notes with: Outlook
This works great, and the settings stick. As soon as apple releases any new version (even minor) of iTunes and I install, I immediately receive: "...the information on the iphone is synced with another user account", and have to merge my calendar and contacts, but then once I get into iTunes, I find that ALL of the above settings (prevent syncing, sync calendar, contacts, notes) get reset and are turned off! I am running as a user account with Admin privaleges, but I don't right-click -> "Run as administrator" when I perform the iTunes update.
To reiterate, once I change the settings back, things work normally until the next iTunes update at which it gives me that sync error, and resets my sync options.
Any idea? Thanks!

Create another user for the PC with your name, and try syncing that way.
This way it wont conflic with the other user. -

I've gone through all the troubleshooting of restarting computers & itunes and updating itunes. Trying to put in to DFU mode. I've tried everything. iTunes just doesnt recognize this ipod. I have multiple ipods/iphones, and everything else works. I am eliminating the people who are saying it's a broken pin, that cannot be it, because immediately before that moment, it was connected, everything on my ipod was listed in iTunes. It just promted me to update to 6.0.1 (or whatever the most recent is) I also seen a lot of issues posted on the web of people who had jailbroken phones. This ipod touch is standard, there were no jailbreaks or anything used ever.
There was a program called Wondershare Dr.Fone, which is said to be a photo recovery tool for ipods, to retrieve recently deleted photos. (Guess I shouldn't have been trying to do that) I downloaded this trial and when it opened it stated that Itunes and this could not run at the same time. It shut down iTunes automatically. At that point, I didn't do anything more with the Wondershare Dr. Fone, I didn't try to run the program or anything. iTunes prompted me that the device needed to be upgraded to 6.0.1. I had an option to download or download and install the updated 6.0.1 from Itunes. I clicked on download only. So iTunes was downloading the new version from my iPod Touch. I shut it down the Wondershare Dr. Fone, unplugged the iphone from itunes/computer, went in to settings and did a master reset. I plugged the device back in to the computer when the iTunes logo and usb came on the screen, and the computer/iTunes doesn't recognize it anymore. I've tried 4 different usb cables and four different comuters all with up to date iTunes software. I did not break the port either, nothing is inside the port, or blocking it in anyway. All 4 computers and usb cables connected fine to other ipods and iphones.
So the questions are:
How can I get my ipod out of restore mode (iTunes logo and usb cord sybol) without iTunes recognizing it?
What could I have possibly done to this ipod?
Why doesn't anyone have the answer anywhere on the internet?
(Note: Even if the Ipod is placed in DFU mode, iTunes does not recognize it)

I believe that when you reset your ipod(command given from the computer, right?) touch WHILE the ipod was updating, It cleared the system in the middle of writing files, thus corrupting(equivalent of cutting of in the middle of a sentence) the basic running system.
I suggest you go to an apple store and ask for a technical diagonosis in person. they may offer to help if the problem is fixable. If your ipod is still under warrenty, i would guess it would be free/low cost.

When there is an update to a newer version of a browser like this update to Safari 5.1.4, is there an article that goes over the best way to update to a newer version of a browser that one knows of? Is it best to close all apps, install the update, turn the computer off, turn it on and hold down the shift key until the gear and progress bar are showing, when this is finished, do a restart of the computer. I hav always wondered the best way (if there is a best way) to update to a newer version of a browser so you avoid potential problems. Is there a Support Article that goes over installing and updating to a newer version of one's browser, in this case Safari?

Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Later versions of OS X.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
