Preferences Reset On Startup

Personal File Sharing turns off on startup. Other sharing settings are kept, such as Printer Sharing and Remote Apple Events, but File Sharing turns off every time. Also the sound settings change back to Line In with the volume down every time the computer starts up. I haven't tested all of the System Preferences, but I imagine there's other problems. I've tried trashing all of the user prefs and caches to no effect. Have started in safe mode, run Disk Utility and Diskwarrior. I'm reluctant to reinstall the OS or switch users because I'm in the middle of a project.
Any ideas?

I removed the entire preferences folder from the user and restarted to no effect. I moved the folder to my Documents, but didn't trash them. Would that have made a difference?
I don't remember what Disk Utility said, will try it again tomorrow, and I haven't tried booting from the disc. I'll give them a test tomorrow and let you know.
Thanks,
Arthur

• Preferences resetting at startup! So frustrating!

I've recently been having problems with my Ibook, every time I shut down my computer and turn it back on it will reset all of the settings. Dashboard widgets reset, background, dock, power settings, the whole shabang. It's currently ver. 10.4.8 I believe. Not only that but iTunes won't open my library any longer, says it's damaged? And creates a new library every time I start it up. I then am forced to drag and drop my music into iTunes if I want to access it.
Any insight as to why it's doing this is greatly appreciated.

I made another dummy user and it set the preferences back to what I'm going to call "factory" for both of them after a reboot. However I was running filevault and I wonder if it would have anything to do with it. I took down filevault and tried it again and I haven't noticed anything change back yet.
And my iTunes problem seems to be fixed by it as well. Does this seem normal or just a fluke in what's hopefully not an ongoing OS X bug.

• Preferences resetting every startup?

Okay, so every time I turn on my computer, several of my preferences for my mouse's various buttons have been reset. Not all of them, just some of them. I've got a feeling this may not be resolved until 10.7.3, but I'd thought I'd post it here first. Any suggestions?

Just finished repairing disk permissions as you mentioned. Shut down computer and started it back up again. Same issue. Any other suggestions?

• Preferences reset at startup in all newer versions including 7.0.1

In every updated version I get, I have to fight this issue. In the past deleting the pref file was the fix. Then in the last versions, it was deleting the localstore file. Now that does not fix the trouble.
I set my toolbars to bookmarks checked, Norton unchecked, Tabs on top unchecked, and maximize the window. Every time I restart windows XP and restart Firefox, the window opens small and all the toolbars revert to default.
What is the latest work around for this issue?

Thanks for the reply. You helped me the last time I had this trouble with an earlier version and those suggestions you gave worked.
However with 7.0.2 this links suggestions are not working.
1.''overwriting the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder with your backup copy. ''
2.''Firefox Safe Mode>Select the option "Reset toolbars and controls" and click "Make Changes and Restart". ''
3.''Exit Firefox completely, open the Firefox profile folder and delete the file localstore.rdf.''
After trying all of the above, when I restart, and restarting Firefox, a window pops up that appears to have saved my settings. Then seconds later it closes on its own. Then starting Firefox brings up a window with all the default settings back again.

• Display preferences reset

For some reason my display preferences reset at every bootup recently. I have to launch display preferences and as soon as it opens my calibration setting kick in. I have zapped p-ram, repaired promotions, even deleted my calibration files and made new ones.
Any ideas besides get a new Mac? I am waiting for the new Intel Towers to come out but then this one goes to my son when I get my i6.

Hi, vandar.
Well, I wish you had mentioned the Huey earlier. Let me see if I understand the problem now more fully.
You've written: "For some reason my display preferences reset at every bootup recently. I have to launch display preferences and as soon as it opens my calibration setting kick in."and"I am using a Huey for monitor calibration."By Huey I presume you mean the Pantone display calibration device.
1. So, are you saying that the calibrations you've made with your Huey do not load at startup, but simply opening System Preferences > Displays they then load automatically?
2. You're also running dual 17-inch monitors, correct? Did you calibrate both monitors?
3. Is the Huey a new addition, or have you been using it for awhile and this problem just arose? If the latter, what changes, if any, did you make to your Mac before this problem arose?
4. If you had to install software on your Mac to use the Huey, do you have the latest software download from Pantone?
5. This makes me wonder if the Pantone software, if any, should also be launching a Startup or Login item to load the calibrations as part of startup or login. Have you checked the Huey's documentation?
6. You wrote: "Can't fit everything in the "Other Details" section.

• Keyboard system preferences resetting after restart

Greetings,
I began with 2 similar problems. My menu bar and keyboard system preferences would reset after each startup. I fixed the former with https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6028346?tstart=0
Still, every time I restart or logout my keyboard system preferences reset to the default. These defaults interfere with the software I run- Logic & Pro Tools, so while not the worst thing to have to remember to reset them each time, it is a drag.
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks

The procedure below will reset the permissions of a user's home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later, including 10.8 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used under OS X versions older than 10.7.4.
Back up all data before you begin.
Step 1
Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.
Step 2
Press the following key combinations, in the order given:
Command-3
Shift-command-H
Command-I (the letter "I" as in "Info.")
The Info window of your home folder will open.
Step 3
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Step 4
In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.
Step 5
By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.
Step 6
If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups other than "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.
Step 7
Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window.

• OSX 10.6 .8 -- Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options. Don't know where else to look.

How do I keep Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (OSX 10.6 .8 -- MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options.

Hi fullrun-
Once Firefox is open, you should be able to open the Right click context menu on the icon. From there you select 'Options' and then de-select 'Open at Login'. Hope that helps.

• Can I delete the files in ~/Library/Preferences and have all preferences reset to factory default?

I have this folder inside my /Library folder called Preferences. I was wondering if I could delete all of the files inside this folder and have all of my preferences reset to the factory default?

First, why would you want to do this? I ask because all of the applications installed also have preference files. Some of the preference files store things like serial numbers. Some programs that use plugins that use serial numbers also store the serial numbers in the host program's preference file. RapidWeaver is an example of this.
So, If you deleted all of the files in your preference folder, you could have some major headaches for a while afterward.
If you are curious, there is a program called AppleJack that only runs in Single User mode. It can check preference files for you. There are several others available that cost money. AppleJack is a free open source application.
Hope this helps,
Craig

• Preferences resetting themselves?

Not sure if it is just my machine, but after I installed snow leopard (before update) I noticed that some of my system settings just "reset" themselves. Desktop picture changed, Spaces settings just disappeared, printer settings and trackpad settings have lost their settings. Anyone else experincing these kinds of weird things?

Yep, as I posted the other day. My preferences reset themselves. Don't know what it is. Didn't have that problem before installing Snow Leopard. Also, any preference pane I've added say that System Preferences has to restart in order for the preference to run. Saw somewhere this had to do with some 64 bit thing. Also, I have issues with QuickTime. Some movies won't start when I double click them, but will do fine when I open them from the Quicktime pulldown menu. AND printing is all messed up. Apple still has lots of issues with this OS version which need to get fixed ASAP. 10.6.1 was a start.

• Safari Preferences resets my homepage to "Top Sites"

Safari Preferences resets my homepage to "Top Sites" every time I turn on my computer. I would like to set my Homepage to my Yahoo mail page just once and have it stay at that setting. I have an OX S 10.9.5. I reset my preferences every time I turn on my computer but my choices aren't saved when I shut down my computer.

You installed "SearchMe" or some other malicious Safari extension.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Remove all extensions with the word "Spigot" in the description. If in doubt, remove all extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.

• Resolution is being reset at startup.

At startup, right after desktop image, top menu and dock loads, monitor resolution is being reset so only part of the desktop image fits on the screen. Going to Display Preferences and switching resolution does nothing. Starting up in Safe Mode and hooking up a CRT monitor instead doesn't change anything either. Also tried to reset PRAM and trash com.apple.windoserver.plist
The problem first appeared while I was using computer. Screen resolution suddenly changed.

• Personal File Sharing & Printer Prefs reset at startup

I work at a studio that uses all Intel Macs. We have two MacPros as our studio computers and Mac Minis for our client computers. I have turned on Personal File Sharing for the two MacPros everytime I've turned the computers on and they work fine. UNTIL I restart them or shut them down. For some reason, both MacPros at startup are losing their settings for Personal File Sharing AND all my networked Printer Info. So I have to go about resetting them everytime!
Anyone have any insights. If I'm working on let's say Studio B's MacPro and I realized I needed something on Studio A's MacPro, I CAN'T GET IT!!!!!! It's really a poor pickle Apple's got me in and I would appreciate anyone's help in solving this issue. Thanks so much in advance.

THIS PROBLEM WAS SOLVED. Booted up using TechTool Pro's eDisk that I created. Then repaired disk permissions on the Mac OS X hard drive and everything works perfectly now.

• Profile preferences reset to "Read Only" after turning it off.

I cannot start Firefox. It says it is already running. Task Manager does not show any instances running. There is no "parent.lock" file in the "......default" folder. Each time I look at the preferences for the "profile" folder, it shows "read only" is set. I clear it and the next time I look at the preferences "read only" is set.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Firefox but it still resets"read only". Looks like the profile folder has something corrupt in it.

Only a check mark in the Read-only box means that a folder or file is Read-only.
Windows doesn't check all the files in a folder so instead displays a green block to indicate that it is not sure.
You always need to look at the files individually.
Easiest to do that is to make the Attributes visible in "View > Details" mode: Choose Details in Windows Explorer.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• Mail preferences resetting or glitch?!

We just switched my wife from Entourage to Mail in Leopard and some of the preferences keep resetting. The most annoying is "Send mail from:" in the Compose tab keeps resetting to "last used account" instead of one particular account that we have selected 3 TIMES! The other issue was that even though we had left checked "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message:" in the Advanced tab of the Accounts window in preferences. It resulted in her main mail server maxing out and bouncing back new messages today. Has this happened to anyone else? Another factor might have been that we just added a .Mac account to her mail accounts to try and back some of her stuff up to .Mac. Very frustrating...

Not answered, just wanted to get this off my unresolved question list.

• Mac Mini Resets upon startup... Help?

I recently got this Mac Mini, and I am having this problem where every time I restart it, everything is reset... the dock, the desktop background, my settings and preferences, etc.
It also resets it's name to the previous owners name (even though I keep changing it).
I've run the disc utility - repair (from the hard drive, not the install disc). It didn't help.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Have you created a new Administrator account, or are you just renaming the previous user home folder?
If you did the latter (renaming the home folder), it will not work. You have to create a new account (in System Preferences/Accounts).
Good Luck.
