Preferences window always opens after boot.

After working on my new iMac for a couple of days, I now notice that every time I switch on the Mac, when it presents the desktop, it always opens the preferences window.
This doesn't happen after the Mac is simply woken from sleep.
It's not a big deal, but maybe it's an indication that something needs my attention.
Thanks,
Rob

Rob, you'll love your Mac even more the better you get to know it. And if you have any issues just post them. There are lot's of knowledgeable people in these forums who can help you.
Have fun!

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Finder window always opens on start up.

Whether I am starting up or restarting, when I login then a finder window always opens on the desktop. Why? Is this now normal behavior for the finder? Is there a way to stop it?

do you have anything at all in your login items? sometimes other apps will open a finder window like that. see this thread for example

  • How do I make Finder windows always open in new windows?

Subject says it all - there used to be a preference for this in Finder's preferences, but it was apparently removed from Mavericks. I'm getting tired of having to right-click to open each new folder, and I adamantly refuse to allow a Finder window to represent anything more than one folder.

The default behaviour in Mavericks is to open folders in a new tab in an existing window, however this can be changed.
Unfortunately, it's not that simple. There's a very long topic on this change in Mavericks. Currently, there are only two ways to get Mavericks to do what the OP is looking for. That is, to have nested folders open in their own folder window instead of taking over the same open window when you double click it.
    1) Hold down the option key while double clicking the folder.
2). If you hide all of the extraneous stuff (top and side bars) by pressing Command+Option+T, then nested folders will automatically open in their own folder window without having to hold any modifier key down. But the bars must be hidden on every subfolder in order for that work. Any folder with either the top bar, side bar or both showing will always open the nested folder in the same folder window instead of spawning its own.

  • Running Batch Actions in Bridge causes PS's Preferences window to open repeatedly

I just upgraded to CC at work, and ever since I've had a problem when I batch run Photoshop Actions from Bridge.
I have some simple Actions set up in PS to do some conversions for large batches of images (convert to RGB, resize, change DPI, etc.). But when I run them from Bridge like I always have, it causes Photoshop to open the Preferences window to the "Units & Rulers" tab. And that, unfortunately, pauses the batch conversion until I close the Preferences window. This happens at least once per file, but usually twice. Pretty annoying.
I never had this problem when I was using CS6, but just in case there was some sort of incompatibility with my old Actions, I remade one of them in CC, but the Preferences window still pops up.
This only happens when I run Batch Actions from Bridge. When I run the Action on a single file from PS, it works fine.
Any ideas? Maybe I've found a new bug?
    Thanks!

BTW, I was able to get around this problem by opening all the files I wanted to run the Action on using Bridge, then manually triggering the Batch dialog via Photoshop and using the 'Source: Opened Files' option:
Using this system, I didn't get any errors. Luckily, I also didn't have a huge number of files. If I did, I'd probably have to copy them all into a temp folder using Bridge, then run using 'Source: Folder'. Definitely a pain when they are all right there in Bridge ready to be batched.

  • New window always open in background

    Hello
I've set safari to be assigned a specific space number in Spaces (in practice, #2)
When i click an hyperlink in an application, (for example in mail ) it goes to the specified Space (Space #2) but then always open in the background of safari. (I don't see the window and have to look for it)
Does everyone have the same behavior ?
How have it open in the foreground ?

I think this is a bug , but it is now cleared.
I've played with safari preferences and revert to what i prefer
(In Safari preference, under Tabs DON'T choose "Select tabs and windows as they are created")
    Played also with Spaces assignations.
    Closed Safari and relaunched
And now i get new windows in the front. Go figure...

  • Network clock always open after restart

Whenever I use System Preferences to check "Network" after a restart, the clock is always open even though I locked it, on a previous computer use. WHY? It only happens after a total Mac shutdown.
Is there a specific program to be run that describes the condition of your Mac? I frequently use "Disk Utility," "DiskWarrior 4.1," or "TechTool Pro 4.6.2" What program covers all basic components?

Could you explain with a little more detail please?
Using the "System Preference" option, under "Internet & Network," I open the "Network" option. On the bottom left of "Network" there is an open lock. If I click on it for locking, it stays locked but requires me to enter my system password to access "Network" again. Then it is unlocked.
However, if I shut down my computer with "Network" locked, then restart it, and recheck "Network" again (without the necessity of entering my system password,) the "Network" lock is now opened." So I'm presuming the "lock" only stays closed while the computer is being used. So what is the point of the lock? I suppose there is a simple answer that proves I'm incredibly ignorant!

  • Finder Windows always open new windows when clicking subfolders

since i upgraded to 10.5.6, my finder windows only open new windows when I click on a subfolder. this is no matter what I do with the setting in preferences.
Also, my finder windows no longer display the side bars with folder icons.
I searched my library (and whole computer) for the finder preferences .plist file and can't find it. (was going to delete it and re-create it).
    Any ideas here?

    Thanks for the star.
The default of Finder’s Find will not search that folder, but you can change the pulldown menu just beneath where it says Search, from Kind to System files by selecting Other from that menu and then scroll down the next window and check the box next to System files. You’ll then need to change the pulldown menu next to that to “include” instead of “don’t include.”
The next time you do a search using Find, that pulldown menu will have System files as an option, if you think you might want to search for something in your home folder.

  • Finder Windows Always Locked - After Permission Change

    Hello.
I noticed that other users on my computer had access to some folders (those I created) within my home directory. I didn't want this to be the case so I set permissions for my home directory and did "Apply to all items" so that the permissions are now "Me - Read & Write" and "everyone - Write only (Drop Box)." I am an administrator on the computer.
Now, every time I do a "get info" on a folder I have to unlock it by typing in my password, whereas before the get info windows were unlocked. I'm not positive the permission change is what cased the locked Finder windows, but I think that is what caused it. Also, I tried unlocking the folder and then doing the "apply to enclosed items" but that did not help.
    Thanks for any help,
    KK

    1. Use the "apply to enclosed items" option with great care. Not all items in your home folder should have the same settings, & certainly you would not normally want everyone to be able to write to them all, even if they can't read what they put there!
    2. AFAIK, in Leopard the lock at the bottom of the Get Info window always is in the locked state when the window is first opened, regardless of who owns the item it shows. Generally, you only need to unlock it with an admin password to make sharing & permissions changes. If you own the file, you should be able to (for instance) add Spotlight comments or change the name without needing to unlock it. IOW, the lock is for the sharing & permissions section, not the entire window.

  • "file upload" window remains open after selecting a file. Have to "force quit" to get it to go away. How can I fix this?

Every time I try to upload a file, the "file upload" window remains open and will not go away unless I force quit Firefox. The window stays in front of all other programs and applications. Is this a problem with Firefox or with OSX? Any idea how to solve it? I've tried clearing the cache & cookies, etc. Should I reinstall Firefox or is there a simpler solution?

On Windows (don't know about Mac), the latest version will always take over the file association, and become the default for indd files. It's impossible to change it.
But there is a plugin for ID that makes this possible. Never tried it myself.

Tried that, did 'repair disk permissions and it said all was ok. But when I pressed the 'Verify permissions' button it came out with an error message. Said that there was an error upon exiting, said the hard drive was damaged. Do you think that is connected to 'system preferences' not opening. As I said the 'system now has a 'circle with a slash' symbolon top of it.

  • Adobe File Window repeatedly opens on boot-up of PC ??!!!?!

Hi, I've checked all the posts and don't see this anywhere
    else so here goes.
I like what I see program-wise BUT, how do I stop the Adobe
file window opening each time I boot-up my PC?
This maybe small and insignificant to some but I am beginning
    to find it pretty irritating.
I boot up and there it is, after usual system tray load-ups
etc up it pops. The open window displaying the contents of the
    Adobe.com files.
I have checked the root and it states, correctly as far as I
    can tell, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat.com yep that's where it's
loaded, but why is it popping-up open on my Desktop open each time
    I boot-up?
I have checked my preferences and find nothing to invoke
this, I am definitely sure it isn't open on the Desktop when I shut
down so how and why is this happening.
I have never seen this behaviour before with other programs
and can only assume it's something to do with the Beta version, and
an Adobe burning desire to keep reminding me that "I'm here!".
Before I uninstall completely (assuming that will cure this
narcisstic little annoyance), any suggestions would be most
    welcome.
    Thanks, Rob.

Hi Dean & Pete thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
You may well have identified an install problem when you
asked "did you upgrade to Reader 9 from an earlier version"
Yes I did, one of the reasons I was bothered by this
auto-launching of the Acrobat.com file window is because I had just
completed a total clean install of operating system (XP Pro) onto a
brand new hard drive and I have been very choosy about what I 'OK'
for start programs when loading or reloading all my software.
Adobe Reader version 7 was installed during me loading
    Pinnacle Studio 9 Plus.
I was aware there were several upgrades to 7 and went along
to Adobe's site to download the very latest Reader version, this is
    where I discovered Acrobat.com Beta
Maybe the problem is part of a leap-frog of several versions
    and why that this happens?
Also, thanks to Dean for a workaround, makes sense and worth
doing if I couldn't solve the problem, as I really like the look of
    what's developing with Acrobat.com
The great news is I have found a cure without uninstalling
    anything.
What I did was go into my startups via System tools/System
information/Software environment/StartUp Programs and there is an
'updateMgr' for Adobe reader version 7 and Adobe Acrobat
    Speedlauncher (Type: 'Global')
Due to the Windows system information appearing not to allow
me to change any of the settings, I have use a neat little freeware
    program called System Explorer (
    http://systemexplorer.mistergroup.org/
This has enabled me to easily disable the two Adobe startups
that seemed to be conflisting and causing the problem, and now
everything seems back to normal, with no Autolaunch of the
Acrobat.com file window and total use of Acrobat.com from my
    desktop shortcut.
    Hope this helps others!
    Regards, Rob.

  • Finder window always opens when I enter TM with Safari as active app

I want to recover some bookmarks I think I must have accidentally deleted in Safari, so I plug in the firewire drive I'm using with TM into my laptop and wait until the drive mounts on the desktop. I launch Safari and make sure it's the active application (it says "Safari" next to the apple in the menu bar at the top of the screen and I have a Safari window open). I make sure there are no other applications running and the finder has no open windows. I launch TM. A Finder window opens, and the default directory it opens to is my Desktop, unless I already have a finder window open to some other directory. This happens every time I launch TM so I can never actually use TM to recover my deleted bookmarks. So in other words I never have the option to restore anything in Safari. Interestingly, this problem does not occur when I launch TM with the Mail application as the active application. I thought I'd read that you can restore deleted Safari bookmarks with TM, but is it actually not designed to restore anything in the Safari app or is my TM simply malfunctioning? I have tried to get this to work numerous times, including after reboots and after running new TM backups.

Actually, this is normal behavior since Safari is not yet one the 'Time Machine Aware' applications. You are not going to easily be able to restore individual bookmarks. But you restore ALL of your bookmarks from any given backup. do the following:
    First, quit Safari.
    Go the the folder here...
    /Users/<youruserfolder>/Library/Safari
    Highlight the file labled bookmarks.plist.
While holding the "Option" key down, drag this file to the desktop. This will create a copy there in case you wish to return to this set of bookmarks later.
Now launch the Time Machine "time Travel" interface from the Dock.
Using the time scale on the right, navigate back to a date that contained the missing bookmarks.
Click "Restore" in the lower right.
Choose to replace your current set of bookmarks with this one.
Once completed, launch Safari and the restored bookmarks are available.
Later, you can drag the bookmarks file on the desktop back to the Safari folder to return to your previous set. Otherwise you can delete it.
Let us know if this resolve your issue.
    Cheers!

  • L3 Cache Always Disabled after Boot

    Hi
    I hope someone can help.
Basically I have only noticed this in the last few days. I had thought a few of my audio applications were showing more cpu use and thought I was losing the plot.
But when I check in the preferences - processor, the 1MB L3 Cache always shows disabled. At first I thought my hardware had broke but I can enable it if I go into the preferences and manually do this. But I have to do this everytime I start up ..this never happened before, how do I get it to stick?
I have checked the cache is working correctly and all reports were good.
I dunno what to do now..Please Help.
    Thanks
    Daryl

Its just happened again..I've managed to figure out whats causing the problem but not why its happening (10.4.7)
The power management in osx has started acting up . I think its OSX 10.4.7 broken something, because its just started happening since then (hardware tests ok).
The battery is alive but it stops getting charged, L3 cache gets disabled (reduced mode) and the battery meter keeps trying to calculate and is stuck wasting cpu cycles.Performance has gone out of the window.I am doing audio work so noticed straight away and just thought ... not again.
Apple fix this please. 10.4.7 seems to have some serious issues (I've been lucky up until now)
