Preferred brand of memory

I've read the various posts and links to purchase memory, but does anyone have a favorite type they know works well? I have the late 2006 iMac Core 2 Duo 20inch and have 1GB RAM now and was thinking of making it 2GB.
Also, I haven't open the panel yet, so are there 2 slots filled with 512? Are there only 2 slots (meaning I would have to buy a 2GB memory chip)?
Thanks!

Go to: "Apple / About this Mac / More Info" this opens your "System Profiler" then in the "Hardware" section select "Memory". You should see a 512MB module in each slot. If you want to upgrade to 2GB you will need 2x1GB ram modules. Core 2 Duo support a max of 3GB, that would be 1x1GB and 1x2GB module.
Installing and replacing memory (RAM)
Here's a good place to start shopping
Besure the ram modules are mac compatible and have a life time warranty. I have 2x1GB Corsair modules, one I've had for a year and the other now matching I just purchased and installed last week.

  • Which brands of memory to go for or avoid?

I'm going to upgrade my Mac Mini Dual Core 1.83 from 512MB to 1GB or 2GB, and I was wondering if there's any brand of memory I should go for, or any I should avoid. Corsair and Crucial seem to get talked about a lot, but are they any better then others, or is it just hype? And how do other brands compare? I guess I should avoid anything with the word 'value' in it?

I always buy from Crucial because (as mentioned above) they offer a 100% guarantee that the RAM will work and will replace if it doesn't. I've used them quite a bit and only had one faulty/incompatible module, which they replaced straight away.
I've just (today) upgraded my McMini to 2GB using Crucial memory. It was about £40 for the 2GB including overnight delivery. The memory they sent me was from the same manufacturer as the original RAM in the Mini. You can use their memory selector to make sure you order the right parts.
One word of caution though - be very careful inside the case as these new minis seem a lot more delicate than the G4s (you may want to see my other post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1282760&tstart=0).

  • [Intel] Mixing different size and brands of memory. MSI 6507 Motherboard.

    Hello,
Does anyone know if it is ok to mix, firstly different size ram and secondly - different brands. I am currently using a 1x PC2100 512mb stick and 1x PC2100 256mb stick (Different Brands) and have never had any problems. However I am looking to replace the 256 stick with either another 512 or 1g, when searching on the net most of the advice is not to mix brands and always use pairs rather than different size sticks?
    I have a MSI 6507 MB
    Thanks

    Hi
Using matched pairs is still the best way to go with memory but that doesn't mean that having different brands won't work.  It is a crap shoot when mixing different sticks of memory.  Sometimes it works fine but most of the time it causes problems.

  • Brand of memory?

    Hello!
I'm just about to buy the Mb MSI X58 Pro-E together with Intel i7 920 but I'm confused over what brand of DDR3 RAM I should pick: Corsair XMS 1600 3x1Gb or Kingston HyperX 1600 3x1Gb.
I just don't know so I would be thankful for advice from those who knows.
    KA

So far, using exclusively Corsair's, no problems of any kind have been encountered to date. All the kits I have used were the 3X2G variety, but wouldn't think the 3X1G kits to be less reliable.

  • T400s Memory brand?

i ordered a T400s today with 2GB DDR3 module. I would like to order from Newegg a 4GB SODIMM. Does anyone know the brand of memory that ships with this model, e.g., Crucial, Corsair, etc? The part number would be ideal as i could match the latency.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The brand is Elpida.  On the SODIMM is:
    2GB 2Rx8 PC3-8500S-7-10-F1
From another forum someone is using Kingston:
    http://lnv.lithium.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T400_series_ThinkPads&thread.id=13932&view=by_date...
    Kingston DDR3 HyperX SO-DIMM 1066MHz 2x 2GiB (KHX8500S3ULK2/4G)
According to this picture Lenovo SODIMM uses Hynix memory chips:
    http://www.thinkpads.com/wp-content/gallery/thinkpad-t400s-upgrading/lenovo_thinkpad_t400s_ram-close...
There are different speed options for the same part numbers, you want G7:
     G7 DDR3-1066 7-7-7

    HMT451S6MMR8C x64 1.5V 8K Ref./64ms S6/G7 x8 Mass production
Since the T400s uses the Mobile Intel GS45 Express Chipset that only supports 1033 (as opposed to 1333 which is Hynix H9 speed) that is the way to go.
This appears to be the correct Crucial Part #:

  • GT60 memory brand

Anyone have an idea of the brand of memory that ships in the GT60 OND-250US?
My laptop came yesterday and I haven't opened it.  I'd like to order some RAM today to bring it up to 16 GB, and I'd like to keep the memory consistent if possible.
    Thanks!

  • Memory Brand? And paired ddr

What brand of memory does apple ship in their MBP? Is it Kingston? and also howcome you do not need to have your ram paired in the mbp like you need to in the MB and mac mini etc? Apple keeps telling me that you don't need to but the computer techs here said that is the point of having ddr ram.

The way the MacBook Pros are set up now... it is actually just about the same price (or less expensive) to get the 2GB stick of RAM from Apple as 3-party resellers.
Crucial offers the 2GB stick for $1169.99 (VERY expensive, excellent quality), while OWC offers it for about $670.00 (some of the cheapest, still good quality).
To upgrade from 2x1GB to 1GB and 2GB from apple is $575.00.
So it depends on what base system you are going with as to which is the cheapest route. Only with the $1999 15-inch would it be potentially advantageous to get the 2GB DIMM from a third party.
As a note: 2GB DIMMs are very expensive no matter what, but if you got it from Apple, they will never blame "third-party" RAM for any issues (in regards to warranty).
I went with a 17-inch MacBook Pro with the 3GB option from Apple.

  • Right memory to satellite A215 to run win7

I have satellite A215-S7422 with 1G. Ram PC5300, i wanna upgrade to 3G cuz my OS is windows 32bits, but i don't know if i have to use pc5400 or pc6400, wich of those will be better to my motherboard?
By the way, can i run windows 7 in my laptop? or i must buy one with windows 7 pre-loaded.
PS. I really like mine and will be hard to me change it.
    Thanks already for the answer.

You can run WIndows 7 on that system.  It can take a maximum of 4gig total with 2gig per slot.  Go to Kingston to see what memory it recommends for your system.  Kingston is the preferred brand for Toshiba Laptops and their KTT line is the one recommended.  They recommend 667MHz modules for your system.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • 1:1 FSB:Memory ratio on 865pe fisr (250+Mhz)

Does anyone have memory that is capable of running 250mhz and over? I was interested in knowing whether the bios changes your ratio to 5:4 when you select 250mhz FSB and over like mine does. I don't know why it changes the ratio when the ram is capable of running at 250+ on 2.7V easy. Nothing is holding me back as I have tested all relevant components at required voltages so it is strictly a bios/mobo issue as I see it. Do any of the 5 bioses for the 865pe allow for higher than 250mhz 1:1 ratio? Could it be the brand of memory I have? It is detected as pc3200 memory which is actually a good thing cause it 'tricks' the mobo into thinking it is compatible ram. But even if the ram is not on the list of 'compatible' ram modules, this should not cause such a problem as that. My theory is that this MSI board has set parameters coded into the bios that govern the way the mobo behaves IRRESPECTIVE of the capabilites of the components in the system. If your mem modules, cpu, etc. fall under a certain category defined by MSI, the mobo will change them back to a default or 'safer' setting if you increased it beyond what the deem is acceptable. How do I know this? Well if you use an utility that allows you to change parameters in windows, such as MSI's very own corecenter you will see that the computer will run at a speed that it would not run at if set in the bios (assuming that your components are capable of running at increased speeds). If anyone has done extensive testings and can tell me which of the 5 current bioses are the least restrictive on user settings, can they please let me know?
    My sys specs are:
    MSI NEO2 865PE FISR
    P4 2.4C 800 FSB
    2x512MB ADATA PC4000

    WD 40GB 8MB Cache
    IBM Deskstar 120GXP 40GB
    Lite-On 16x DVD rom
    Enermax 550W PSU
As of now I am in hardcore diagnostic OC mode. I am taking the time to verify the limits of each of my components separately. Only one component is stressed at any one time and the others are all run as below spec as possible. Lets see what turns up. Let me know what bios works best for you guys.

  • Memory Upgrade Problem/Slot not Working

I have an HP Pavilion G7-1260us.  The laptop came with 4 gigs of memory in one module in one slot.  It is upgradeable to 8 gigs, 4 gigs in 2 slots.  I purchased a 4 gig memory module, installed it and it didn't work.  I figured the system wasn't reading this particular brand on memory so I took it back and got a different brand.  The same thing happened.  System didn't recognize the memory so I took out the installed memory, put the new one in and it worked.  I took that out, put the installed memory in the other slot and it didn't work, so now, I'm fairly sure the slot isn't working.  My question is this, if I purchase an 8 gig memory module and install it in the working slot, will that work and will the system show that I have 8 gigs?  Or will this system only recognize 8 gigs if it's 2 4 gigs in each slot?
    Thanks...
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Hp Support Assistant should tell you what you have. Open up the HP Support Assistant and go to General Specifications, read down to slots. If it shows two slots then they are obviously functioning. If not, go to Device Manager to ensure that there is no conflict.
It is also very-very of the utmost importance that the two memory cards are compatible with themselves and with your system's memory speed.. . . Which is? . . . .It is always best to have matching cards with sychronized speeds from a single vendor.
As for: My question is this, if I purchase an 8 gig memory module and install it in the working slot, will that work and will the system show that I have 8 gigs?  Or will this system only recognize 8 gigs if it's 2 4 gigs in each slot?
If your running Windows 7, Yes, your system will recognize and use the entire eight gigs.

  • MIXING ORIGINAL APPLE MEMORY WITH MEMORY FROM ANOTHER MANUFACTURER

    Hi everyone,
I'm about to hop on the mac train and buy a macbook 2.16GHz( the recent previous black model)
It's coming with 1GB of memory and I wanted to buy 2GB to add to it. I found a good deal for a OWC 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz DIMM(it's one stick of 2GB).
Is it compatible to mix different memory makes and if so, is it also optimal? Would the optimizing power be the same if I used all the memory from one manufacturer or it makes no difference? Thanks.

    bdkjones wrote:
As long as the memory is by a major manufacturer (Samsung, Hynix, Micron, etc) it should not matter.
You do get a slight advantage by using 2 of the same capacity RAM modules. (i.e. 2x1GB chips or 2x2GB chips). In practice, however, this performance gain really isn't noticeable. You have to run a memory benchmark test to see the difference.
I remember there was this supposed IT guy who claimed that different brands of memory "fight it out". Some of the answers were absolutely hilarious. Seriously, there's nothing that consistent about a single brand of memory. There are always variations, but I wouldn't worry about a thing provided the memory actually meets its published specs. You get variation quality with memory modules that aren't fully-branded by one of the major memory IC manufacturers, but there are some reputable brands out there (OCZ, PNY, Patriot, etc).
I have an iBook G4 1.42. For two+ years I've been running the permanent Samsung memory with a 1 GB Micron PC2700 module. I've never encountered anything that suggests that there is a problem with it.
I've also read the Intel specs on what the chipset does with memory sized identically. Apparently it can do that very same thing (memory interleaving) even if the sizes aren't matched. However - it'll only do that for up to the size of the smaller module, and the remainder of the larger module isn't interleaved.

  • Memory Increase - MacBook Pro mid-2012...?

Hello to all who reads this post…
I’m wondering if it's possible to upgrade the memory in my mid-2012 MacBook Pro...?
I believe this should be fairly simple and relatively inexpensive. However, after reading some of the forum posts & reviewing my systems specs on Apple's specs pages , I've become less sure of the possibility to increase the RAM.
My system specs indicate that my memory is upgradable:  Memory Slots ECC:  Disabled     Upgradeable Memory: Yes
One of Apple’s Support pages I came across seems to indicate that my systems RAM can only be upgraded to 8 GB’s max…(but now I’m thinking they mean 8 gigs max per memory slot) and the spec's page on the site seems to indicate that 8GB is the MAX for my MB-pro…?

Do any of the guru's here know how much, (if any), memory I can add to the 8 gigs of RAM currently installed?
If so, what brand of memory and how much of a memory expansion would be best to boost the speed of my MacBk?
I’m hoping the memory increase will give my system an extra boost & extend the lifespan of my Mac…. ( not to mention that my 3 year old son is getting more and more involved with gaming apps…the type of apps that become resource hogs, hogs that love RAM chips..) In any case, I’d like to increase the 8GB of RAM to 16 GB or 32GB and I would truly appreciate any thoughts, advice, feedback, shout outs, etc…

A mid 2012 MBP will accept up to 16 GB RAM (even though Apple says 8 GB).  The specifications are:204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
Look at this video for installation instructions:

You will need a #00 Phillips driver to take off the bottom panel.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum Memory Issues

I have two Super Talent 512 DDR PC3200/400MHZ Memory Modules and attempting to use them as dual channel. I am getting some funny behaviour however. In windows mode, whenever I try to do something memory intensive the machine crashes and reboots. Normally I would say that this is an issue with a bad chip, run memtest86 and determine which chip is bad. Well the results are a bit strange. When ever I run memtest with both modules in either banks 0 and 1 or 2 and 3 (dual channel configuration) I get memory errors. I then test each module separately in bank 1 and get no errors. Do I have a setting wrong somewhere? Could this possibly be incompatible ram?
Can someone please enlighten me as to why this might be happening? If its a settings issue it would be helpful to know where and how I should set this. If it is a compatibility issue it would be very helpful to know what brands of memory people have used successfully for dual channel so that I don't get stuck with this problem again.
Thank you very much for any assistance anyone can offer.
    Channon

Did you purchase the RAM from a 'chain' retailer? - like Best Buy or Circuit City, etc.?  If so it is most likely dual-channel RAM.  Now if you got them from your local 'junk peddler dealer' (that's what I call them) and the RAM chips were not sealed in a manufacturer's package, with their name on it, then you may have gotten screwed.
You can try installing one stick in slot 1 and the other in slot 3.  That should set the system to single-channel mode.  See if it runs okay and then run Memtest again.  If the test passes then you've got yourself a set of 'fake' dual DDR. :(
If you got them at Best Buy (or whatever) that is a large store with a good replacement policy, you should have no trouble exchanging the RAM for a new set... and MAKE SURE THE PACKAGE SAYS DUAL-CHANNEL.
Now on the other hand... if they came from a local computer shop, take them back to where you got them, shove them in the guy's face... tell him he's a liar and will replace your RAM with the correct sticks.  If he refuses you can always shove each chip into his eye sockets to get your revenge.

  • Unable to read usb memory stick + "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"

    Hi Everyone,
Today I was tryign to use a brand new memory stick 8GB-Samsung PNY on my Mac Book Pro. (Mac OSX 10.7.5)
      1. I do not see this drive in the Finder.
       2. Diskutil could detect the drive.
       3. I was trying to put ubuntu image file on the drive from the terminal uitility and I have this error message in a dialog box:
"the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
    4. Clicking on initialize helps me realise that the drive is detected. But I do not have a clue on how to proceed from here. I am new to Mac and its file system formats.
The same issue happened with my 500GB external Western Digital Hard Drive. I was reading on forums that WD got some issues with Apple is trying to resolve. I expected to not have this road-block with another brand but it happened with my memory stick. Now I was forming an impression that something should be done to external storage devices inorder for me to use them Mac OSX.
Kindly enlighten me and help overcome this issue.
    Thank You

    Thank You OGELTHORPE.
I erased the memory stick and formatted to "Mac OS Extended(Journaled)".
I attempted once again to use the "sudo dd" command from termial trying to copy the Ubuntu image file to the memory stick.
The operation termainates with the same message
"the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
The termainal message says some bytes got transffered in so many seconds. It looks like this operation is being terminated in the middle.
Have any suggestions and work arounds?

  • Expanding memory on HP LaserJet 1100

I installed a new memory card on my HP LaserJet 1100 (part # MXC7843A) and now can't get my printer to print.   I installed the card according to downloaded instructions from HP ("Installing DIMMs") and it seemed to go in just fine.  I tried reinstalling the printer software and rebooting the computer but still nothing.  The computer seems to be sending the page to print o.k.  All 3 lights on the control panel are blinking in unison.  According to the Quick Reference Guide, this means that "printer initialization is taking place".  Holding down the leftmost most light (the "go" button) doesn't do anything.

I had the same problem when I installed a brand new memory module C4137A which is 16 MB RAM. All lights are blinking. When I remove the memory it is fine again.
    Anyone with a solution?
