Preferred Energy Saver processsor settings using AC?

What is the preferred setting for the CPU in Energy Saver when using AC?
I have mine set to automatic. The Apple KB suggests if using games or professional applications setting it highest might be the better? I use CS2 and Macromedia Studio 8. But wouldn't having it at highest be more strenuous on the processor?

In theory yes, but in practice all forms of power management for CPUs tend to throttle the CPU even when the system load is more than idle. At least all forms I've seen. The only way to ensure high performance is to disable the automatic power management of the CPU. But since you're plugged into tthe wall you don't care about power usage as much. Heat is the real issue with using the highest performance. Since a PowerBook is such an enclosed space the cooling system has trouble with the high heat of a heavily loaded processor. As long as you don't leave the machine on all of the time overheating should be a minor issue. But, having a temperature monitor program running in the background is never a bad idea.

  • Energy Saver optimization settings missing in 10.5.8

I seem to have lost my optimization settings in the Energy Saver preference pane. I'm using a unibody MBP 13" running on 10.5.8, with Energy Saver version 4.4.3.. Does anybody else have this problem, and/or has anybody found a solution? Appreciate any help.

I'm my case there are NO options whatsoever for either battery or power adapter.
I have gone through the other posts and it seems to have been a problem in 10.5.6 that was resolved in 10.5.7, the difference being that the options were not available ONLY in the pull down menu at the menu bar but available in the System Preferences pane. What version of Energy Saver are you running? Mine is 4.4.3 as per the System Profiler. Is there any way to update this, if mine is not the latest version?

  • Energy Saver forgets settings immediately

Greetings, everybody. I'm going crazy trying to wrest control of my machine back from some screwy permissions problems. I've even gone so far as to reinstall Snow Leopard, although since it was an archive-and-install it's only fixed a few things. I've also spent about an hour searching the forums here and elsewhere, and I haven't been able to find anything pertaining to this problem. If I've somehow missed it, please forgive me and I'd appreciate a courtesy link.
One of the big ones, though, is the Energy Saver. It will not save any setting I give it, no matter what. I am the admin and only user on my machine. For some reason my Mac has decided that "Never" for both Computer sleep and Display sleep is just dandy, and refuses to let me change them. If I move the slider to 1 min, and click Show All and then open Energy Saver back up, it's already reverted back to Never. Every combination of trying to change it and restarting/logging out/closing Sys Pref fails to establish the new settings.
I've tried trashing com.apple.systempreferences.plist to no avail. While searching I found something about trashing com.apple.PowerManagement.plist but I can find no such file on Snow Leopard -- there is a PowerManagement.bundle instead, with three folders (_CodeSignature, MacOS, Resources) and two plist files (Info, version).
Possibly related: Every time I run Disk Utility's permissions repair, it fixes literally hundreds of incorrect permissions, even after reinstalling Snow Leopard. It seems to fix the same ones every time I run it. It typically says "ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/Priv...SColorPickerPageableNameListAquaCongruency.nib", for example. There are a ton of "ACL found but not expected" instances. I cannot figure out how things got this screwed up. Reinstalling 10.6 restored AirPort connection awareness to the menu bar (it would display no networks available, yet System Preferences would automatically connect to a wireless network), but unfortunately there are still hundreds of messed-up permissions. It does seem to take less time to run the repair after the reinstallation though, so, there's that.
One more: Get Info will not let me reclaim ownership of an external AirPort Disk that hosts my iTunes media. Under Sharing & Permissions, it says I have custom access, and under Name it says "everyone - No Access". It will not let me add Admin, my long username, or my short username (Claims it isn't valid). Despite this, iTunes reads and writes to it like normal.
Do I have any other choice but to perform a clean install of OS X?

    1. Thank you kindly! You've pointed me in the right direction for that plist; I was basically searching everywhere but there (of course). Energy Saver listens to me again, hooray! "sudo go to sleep..."
    2. Apologies, I'm using the old nomenclature. I'm used to "Archive and Install" meaning "Install the new OS without touching your user files". Thanks for setting me straight.
    3. Finally, I know I can ignore them, but it still gets under my skin and makes me uncomfortable seeing all those fly by in Disk Utility. And as long as iTunes is accessing my AirPort Disk (a USB Seagate FreeAgent Go, for what it's worth), is that anything I should be concerned about?

  • Energy Saver 'Sleep' settings unlocking itself

Hi, does anyone knows why this happen after every restart?

    Hiya,
mine don't but in system prefs/SECURITY, I have ticked "require password to wake...", also "disable automatic login" and "require password to unlock each system preferences pane".
    Any good?

    1GB 667 Mhz DD2 SDRAM
    Boot Rom 1M71.007A.B00
    Model Ident: iMac7,1
*The Energy Saver is having issues*
Put the Computer to sleep when it is inactive for - set to Never
Put the display to sleep when it is inactive for - set to Never
Unchecked - Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible
The reason I have the above set the way I have it is cause I'm running some performance tests... however, every 2-3 minutes the Screen is turned off, the Hard drive is turned off and the computer is put to sleep. It's doing exactly the opposite of what I want it to do. Which then in turns puts a massive hit on the performance results every time the computer goes to sleep.... even though it's told not to go to sleep, I'll even click the lock to lock it down but that doesn't matter, it still goes to sleep 2-3 minutes later.... AND it doesn't matter if the mouse moves to keep it active.
Is there a Fix for this?
I ran the software update and it doesn't do much. But in the end it still does the same thing.
I've reinstalled the OS several times but that doesn't fix the issue.
    Again to reiterate,
Energy Saver window in the System Preferences
    Sleep Tab
both sliders set to Never and Hard Drive is set to NOT go to sleep (as it's unchecked)
I have other iMacs some older some the same, all work as told, except this one.

Yep, that seems to agree with your Energy Saver preference settings. It would be surprising only if they did not match . It appears that the GUI and pmset are working with the same preference file (as they should).
*sleep = 0* <----------> Put the Computer to sleep when it is inactive for - set to Never

I'm also running 10.4.10 (but on a white C2D). When I set my preferences to match yours, pmset -g always lists "halfdim = 0" or "halfdim = 1", as expected. Kinda strange that yours doesn't list it.
I presume you've followed den.thed's good advice on resetting the SMC, so the only things I can think of would be:
\- Make sure Screen Saver is set to 'Never' ... but I'm guessin' you already did that
\- Delete the Energy Saver preferences and scheduled events files (make copies first!), then immediately shutdown and reset the SMC ...yet again!
Here's where the Energy Saver preference and schedule files live (from "man pmset"):
+All changes made through pmset are saved in a persistent preferences file (per-system, not per-user ) at+
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
+Scheduled power on/off events are stored separately in+
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
+pmset modifies the same file that System Preferences Energy Saver modifies.+
I wonder if the EFI ROM is old, and needs updated.
I don't think there have been any EFI updates for the 2.4 GHz iMacs -- but I'm sure someone here could confirm/correct that.
...who knows what evil lurks in the mind of pmset?

  • Shuffle Pictures Screen Saver / Energy Saver not working after 3.1.1 update

(cross-posted from the Snow Leopard discussions)
    Hello,
I've noticed that my Screen Saver has not been kicking in lately and thus my iMac hasn't progressed to the full Energy Saver profile settings (Computer Sleep in 1.5 hrs & Display Sleep in 30 mins). Screen Saver is set to shuffle random pictures from a folder in my Aperture library.
I'm not sure if it is linked or not, but I only noticed this problem after installing the latest update to Aperture (3.1.1) from the Software Update. Since they may be linked I am cross-posting this question in the Aperture discussions as well.
Any suggestions on what may be causing my problem and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

try Resetting it up, I run in that problem with adding images, I end up having to click of the the folder than click on the folder I want than it updates...

  • Mac does not sleep after setting Energy Saver settings

Hi, got a slight problem after installing Leopard. The thing is that my Mac seems to ignore the settings specified in Energy Saver Preference Pane, the screen is put to sleep as it should, that's working fine, but the computer does not go to sleep when designated. I can put it to sleep manually (or by using Schedule) but setting an inactivity time doesn't work.
No visible console messages or similar, no external HDDs or other external devices, no bluetooth, no file sharing, no bad apparent application/process running, no spotlight indexing, as you see I have tried a few things to fix the problem...
Any ideas of how to fix this problem would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Message was edited by: Chessax

Ok, seems like I fixed the problem, the numerous things I tried must have solved it, probably the SMC or PRAM/NVRAM fixed it, though I'm not sure, but anyway it's working now, so I'm good.
And to asphotos: No I don't have any printer at all, and I don't use airport, not sure what caused the problem really, just appeared after Snow Leopard install... Thanks for the tip though.

  • Machine goes to sleep faster than Energy Saver settings

    Hi all,
(I've searched for existing threads aboutthis but couldn't find any. Hope I'm not "re" posting)
I use my laptop (MBP 2.4, 8gb, INtel Core i7) to play music live, so I need it to not go to sleep for at least... 30-40 minutes as I will frequently not touch it directly for that long as I'm busy playing my instruments. But it goes to sleep consistently after about 10 minutes even though I've got the display set to sleep abfter 1.5 hours and the computer to sleep after 2 hrs.
Then I noticed the same thing on my Mac Pro in my studio. Same Energy Saver settings, still goes to sleep after about 10-15 minutes. Which means I have to re-enter my password there too. Same thing on my older MBP. Theyr'e all on Lion 10.7.4.
This is very annoying. Anyone know what I'm doign wrong?
    Huge thanks!

I'm not sure why Energy Saver is doing that, but you may want to download Caffeine from the Mac App Store. It's a menu bar application that you can click and unclick that, when clicked, keeps your Mac on until it is unclicked or if you close the laptop lid/manually put it to sleep.

  • Energy saver settings won't stick

I've set my iBook to NOT dim the screen prior to going to sleep. I've also disabled the screen saver and have set the display to sleep after 1 hour. Still, the screen dims (not much, but noticeably) after just a couple of minuts of inactivity. It seems that the energy saver settings have no effect. Does anyone else see this behavior?
    Joe

Keep in mind that the "Energy Saver" lock is the same lock as all the other system Preferences locks. If one is unlocked they all are.
My Macbook never has gone to Sleep on it's own, ore rarely if at all. I have attributed it to a 56 dialup accelerator that I use as that program also causes it to take about 31 seconds to go to sleep any time you manually select Sleep from the menu. I just point this out because maybe you have some application that is causing a problem with Sleep.

  • Strange behaviour of the Energy Saver settings

I noticed that the two sliders in the Energy Saver settings seem to work in tandem. If I set the Display to "Never shutdown" (I used this as I don't want my display/TV to go off in the middle of a movie as the mac sees there are no user interactions), and then try to adjust the sleep timer to anything (15min, 30min, etc.), it aligns the slider for the Display at the same point!
Is it happening only on my mac or is it the way it works for others?

That would be the simple logic. But, the scenario I mentioned is also a logical one. I have noticed that when I am watching a long Youtube video or an online movie from sites like Jaman, the screen would go off even though the system access is alive. At that time I have to scramble to the mouse/kbd to reactivate the display.
At the same time, I want to put the mini to sleep after 30min of inactivity. Hence, I want to set the sleep timer to 30min and the display to "never".
The energy saver settings show two separate sliders and there is no indication that they are attached at the hips.
Since it works this way for you as well, then I am not doing something weird. I think this is a bug in the OS.

  • How to get external monitor to obey Energy Saver settings

I have a 23 inch Apple Cinema Display connected to a 2010 15 inch 2.8 GHz i7 MacBook Pro running Mac OS X (10.6.5). I'm running the laptop in clamshell mode. Everything is working fine, but for one thing. For some reason the external display does not obey the Energy Saver Control Panel settings. I have the Energy Saver Control Panel set up so the laptop never sleeps but the display is set to sleep after 5 min. of inactivity. Unfortunately the external monitor never sleeps.
Anybody know how to get only the external monitor to sleep in clamshell mode?
    Thanks…
Dragon Dictate in use. Occasionally mistakes are made. I correct the ones I notice…

Basically, reinstall the Boot Camp video drivers manually and if that doesn't work then go to the AMD/Radeon website and install the Windows drivers directly for your video card model.
If you want to do a search you will find others that have pretty good luck doing it either way.

  • Energy saver settings do not stick when set in system preferences

For some reason when I restore the default settings for the energy saver settings, the settings go back to a custom setting I set months prior of Display Sleep at 1 minute.
Here is what I am doing:
    Going to "System Preferences"
    Going to "Energy Saver"
    Pressing the button "Restore Defaults"
Everything goes back to the default settings of Computer Sleep of 10 minutes and Display Sleep of 10 minutes and I close the window out.
Problem happens: A bit later I come back to my iMac and wake it up, the setting is back to 1 minute of Display Sleep (which I did months ago, I no longer want that).
I have even locked the setting to prevent further changes. Which locks the settings in place like it should I believe. However, once the iMac sleeps and I wake it up in a couple of hours it switches back to the old setting I made months ago, 1 minute of Display Sleep, which I no longer want.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

i have the opposite problem... i would like to use custom Energy Saver settings but they will not "stick." instead they keep returning to the default settings. i followed the advice on this thread, thinking it might solve my problem too. but it did not. any suggestions?
i had one hunch - that it might have something to do with the file of same name but with ~orig at the end (see image below). should i remove the other file as well?
    thanks!

  • Energy Saver settings don't "stick"

It seems like at random times the settings I have set in Energy Saver, which I lock, become "unlocked." For example, I have Energy Saver set to put the display to sleep after 8 minutes of inactivity and for the hard drive to go to sleep after 10 minutes. The lock in the lower left corner of System Preferences is locked...for sure.
It'll work fine; then one day I'll lift the lid on the MacBook; use it for awhile; will set it down, thinking it'll go to sleep if I'm not back in 10 minutes; I'll come back an hour later, only to find that while the MacBook's screen is off, the HDD did NOT go to sleep as it's set to. I'll open System Preferences, and find that somehow the lock in Energy Saver is now UNlocked.
How does this happen? Am I missing something here? What causes the Energy Saver lock to become "unlocked?" I've been burned by having a drained battery several times, and I can't figure out what I'm missing to ensure this doesn't happen as REPEATEDLY as it is?

Keep in mind that the "Energy Saver" lock is the same lock as all the other system Preferences locks. If one is unlocked they all are.
My Macbook never has gone to Sleep on it's own, ore rarely if at all. • Energy saver settings - weird sleep behaviour

I have customized Energy saver with the following:
When power Adapter: display sleep 5 min, computer sleep 1hr
When battery: display sleep 3 minutes, computer sleep 10 minutes.
This works when I first boot up my Mac. However after the first sleep things get akward, it almost seems to me that MacOSX has swapped these two settings.
Symptoms: I rebooted my Mac this afternoon. I unplug the power cord. The Mac goes to sleep after 10 minutes.
I wake the Mac. I leave it still. The screen stays on unusually long. After 20 minutes the Mac is still not asleep as it should be. It usually remains like this until the next complete system reboot.
This gets annoying when on the go and energy saving really is needed...
What is happening? Any weird settings file corrupt from previous versions of the system?
    All suggestions welcome...

    1. You wrote: " the system doesn't shut down at all (an hour after I left the room) when it's supposed to shut down in 4 minutes, as currently set."This is the first you've mentioned about a problem with shutdown, which I would presume to mean a problem with "scheduled shutdown." Previously, you were writing about sleep.
Are you confusing "idle sleep" with "shutdown" in your post? Let's clarify what you mean by "shut down" in the quote above.
    2. If the problem is idle sleep, then see "Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode." In addition to the causes cited therein, and the corrupted Energy Saver preferences we discussed earlier, some other common inhibitors of idle sleep include:
    • Runaway processes incessantly writing to Console logs will keep the hard drive active and prevent idle sleep. Vendor-provided software included with HP All-In-One devices and Canon scanners are common culprits, but other apps have been known to continuously write to Console logs. See my "Checking Console for clues" FAQ and look for repeating blocks of messages being written at high frequency.
    • Classic Sleep. If you're running Classic apps, be sure that the "Put Classic to sleep when it is inactive for…" slider is set to other than Never in the System Preferences > Classic > Advanced tab.
    3. If the problem is with scheduled shutdown, how that works depends on the version of Mac OS X 10.4 you are using. See:• If 10.4.5 or earlier, see "Mac OS X's Shut Down schedule will only work when one user is logged in."
    • If 10.4.6 or later, see Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later: Scheduled shut down occurs at Login window even if users are logged in."
Note that your Mac must be awake at the appointed time for scheduled shutdown to work. See "Mac OS X 10.3 and later: Computer must be awake for scheduled shutdown to occur."
    Good luck!

  • Disable "Your computer may use more energy with these settings"

I frequently use my laptop for presentations or video chats, and I frequently have to turn off my screen saver and disable all my Energy management settings to prevent that stuff from showing up during a presentation.
However, every time I drag the Energy Saver timers around, I get the annoying message:
"Your computer may use more energy with these settings"
The box forces me to hit Okay to acknowledge this painfully obvious message. How do I disable this prompt from popping up every single time I adjust my Energy settings? Plist setting somewhere perhaps?

Thanks Livia and Huevoos (eggs??) for your interest in this post.
In a nutshell, I haven't been able to solve this. I gave up on Apple support after they proved useless.
As Huevoos suggested, and I confirmed it time and again after browsing thru endless forums, it seems that the user validation routine for the Mac App Store is done by looking into your network settings, which in my case are either incomplete or erroneous due to the broken-down ethernet. (I am still waiting for somebody more experienced in this forum to contradict or explain this).
So, because I still have wireless connection, I can use my machine for day-to-day chores, have not been able to purchase anything up to this date in the Mac App Store though. I'm waiting for either a software update that could correct this (Mountain Lion??? there's no guarantee only hope) or the moment when my machine will need to be replaced by a new one with a functional ethernet.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help. But I'm pretty much in the same situation as you guys.
    Live long and prosper.
