What ist the preferred Hardware Platform
for using LINUX with Oracle RAC - Cluster solution ?
What do you prefer Suse or Redhat ?
Is there a tested Hardware Environment from Oracle Support ?

You have the disk space, but not the memory, even discounting the memory for the Oracle VM hypervisor, OEL/RH5 is going to take at least 1G to run. So, with your base OS, hypervisor, Linux and Oracle (clusterware and DB), it may be possible, but I believe you would be swapping so much you would have terrible performance. I would look at a MINIMUM of 3GB if not 4GB RAM to try this configuration.

A reasonable hardware configuration for Linux OAS

Has anyone out there tried to run
Oracle 8 for Linux and OAS 3.02
all on the same toasted PC/pentium server?
Could you tell me the nature of your
hardware configuration (processor speed, ram, etc)
if you feel the performance is acceptable for
development (not for actual business operation).
The technical FAQ lists 48 megs and any
Pentium to run Oracle 8 for Linux which
verges on ridiculously low.
I just want to know a reasonable
configuration to run both Oracle 8 and OAS .

I have been runnig OAS/O8 on a Pii/300Mhz system with 128mb of
ram, and so far I have no real complaints on speed. I even tuned
the SGA to give a little better performance and still have around
40 or so MB free. BTW, I haven't really tried to mess around
with the Linux version of OAS, but have used the Solaris version
previously, have you noticed any problems with the wrb starting
up? I have seen some error messages saying "No processes..." or
something, looks like an error.. have you experienced this?

Hardware Acceleration for Linux with FireFox 4

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and FireFox 4 stable with a GT 240 and the latest nvidia binary driver. I have this set up as a HTPC through HDMI cable and have audio as well through the HDMI. It works wonderfully! I can watch x.264 and my intel celeron 2.8 GHz doesn't even get out of bed thanks to hardware acceleration.
Now, that is NOT the case while on the web... It is a tall order to watch HD quality flash (although with the [http://demos.hacks.mozilla.org/openweb/HWACCEL/ mozilla hardware stress test] I get 45 FPS). It seems to be that hardware acceleration is still very much in its infancy in the linux environment with firefox 4.
After searching through many threads I have come to find some useless information.

There seems to be an issue with firefox not recognising the installed graphics card. On Windows machines, the about:support page will report all the graphic card information in the Graphics section in addition to '''GPU Accelerated Windows 0/1''' or '''1/1'''. This seems to NOT be the case in linux. Why? Why doesn't firefox discover the installed graphics card?
Now, if I have missed a memo or been a total newb in this attempt to take advantage of Accelerated Hardware in FireFox 4 for linux '''PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME''' as to what I need to do. If I have done all the things needed to achieve hardware acceleration and it is just not possible, than the good 'ol folks at mozilla should be a little more transparent when they proudly proclaim that they have released a hardware accelerated browser.
If anyone can shed some light on this predicament please post. If anyone has hit the same wall as I have please post... rant... w/e...

Hi,
I want to create a 11.2 RAC with only one node.
I will add a new node in the future.
I've available a netapp for the shared storage (ASM).
So I need to buy only the server.
The requirement is that the server has 4 network devices (2 for public and 2 for interconnect in bond) 10Gbit
1 fiber channel to connect the storage and what else?
Need I buy the switch if I config only one node?
what's missing? exclude ram and cpu...

HI,
For your home testing you might need a latest technology to get a smooth and fast installation. i7 processor might be the ideal with memory at least 8GB. if you're planning to have more than 3 VMs running at the same time than you need 12-16GB memory at least.
From my experience installing on vm and allocated memory 2.5GB each VM the installation could take 15-30minutes

SAN for ocr and vote file for Linux RAC

Hi Experts,
Based on Oracle document, i have to create 2 devices for the OCR and 3 for the VOTE in RAC.
However, my boss think SAN maybe mirroe OCR and Vote file. It is enough for 1 location in SAN storage. It does not matter how many driver sidplay for user.
Actually it is only one SAN in back side.
Any Explain for OCR/VOTE file in SAN?

The idea to have these multiplex copy is to reduce the single point of failure, non the less, that's reason you build RAC in the first place isn't?
So if it's possible you'd better have redundancy on physical disk level (LUN etc) then logic level (volume, partition etc) then file level.
Well I agree modern SAN are pretty reliable and had built in redundancy on physical and logic level, but if you only have single vote disk and OCR, your RAC is going to fail right away when vote disk and OCR has problem. The chances are if your OCR and Vote disk has logical corruption, the corruption is going to populated to your mirrors. Even if your mirror is good you still need to get mirror copy to replace working copy and restart cluster during the time your RAC is offline.
With more than one OCR and voting disk, your RAC is likely to survive single OCR/vote disk failure, so you can fix the problem while RAC online.

Hardware recommendations for learning Solaris Cluster on Sparc (at home)

On a low budget, I'd like to put together a Solaris Cluster on Sparc (at home). At "work" in the next year we will be implementing a Solaris Cluster to run Tomcat and a custom CORBA server. (These apps will be migrated from very old hardware and VCS) The CORBA server is a Sparc binary, hence the need for Sparc. I'd like my home-office cluster to be similar in function to what I have at work. At work we have (2) T5120 Servers and a 2540 (2500-M2) Array waiting. From looking at the Solaris Cluster docs, it looks like you use a 2540 in a Direct-Connect configuration. We will be going to Solaris Cluster training eventually, but not soon. In the meantime, I'd like to keep/gain some skills/experience.
Potential (cheap) Home Cluster:
(2) SunFire V245 or (2) T1000 or (2) something_cheap
connected to
(1) Storedge D2 or (1) Storedge S1
My main desire, is for the interconnects and failover on this Home Cluster to behave the same way as the T5120s with the 2540 Array. Example, if I yank a HD (or replace) then I'd like it to give very similar messages to what I will face at work in the future. I'd like the creation of ZFS pools etc to work similarly. I'd like SCSI cards (HBAs or whatever) and cabling to be cheap.
Any recommendations on hardware> Servers? Arrays? SCSI Cards/cabling?

For practicing purposes, you could consider a VBox / OVM based setup at home. We have used those for Hands On Labs in the course of Oracle Open World more than once. I recommend you use a machine with at least 8GB memory and dual core (HT enabled) processors. Some configuration examples: Lenovo Laptop, ThinkPad, 8GB, 320GB HDD, i5 dual core, 2.5 GHz, Win 7 or a Mac Mini, latest version, i5 dual core, 2.3GHz and 8GB memory would do the trick for a two node cluster. Note that I mention the hosting OS in case you use VBox. For OVM based setups you either have to use a dual boot system or use a dedicated machine. You will be somewhat restricted with respect to the hardware failures you can impose on this system obviously (due to the VM setup), but for practicing purposes, you should find those environments sufficient, I think. when comparing to WinNT.
I've been developed applications under WinNT with CVI for 3 years and had to
reboot only few times.
Even Linux is more stable than WinNT, still linux suffers from
incompatibality of hardwares and software technologies.
- Where in linux you can manipulate a program with another program like you
have in DDE in Windows ?
- Where in linux you can share application components in your customized
program like OLE and ActiveX in Windows ?
- Linux doesn't support foreign languages and foreign fonts, for example I
use hebrew and couldn't found hebrew for my RedHat platform that would be
supported by all the hebrew web pages, in Windows you don't mee
t this
problem.
- Is linux user friendly for install and maintance ... ? common...
- When you buy any additional PCI, ISA, AGP card or some accessory like
printer, scanner, cam. , CD, DVD etc. for your PC there's no chance you'll
get it with drivers for LINUX so you'll need to spend hours on web to look
for your new hardware drivers for linux if you'r lucky.
- Try to browse to an ASP web site which was written with VisualBasic
scripts, on linux and you'll find how much of the origianl page
functionality is missing comparing with browsing the same page under IE
Windows
LINUX is stable, yes but in what price: its very very far from being a
standard OS and so far it seems that the market including software, hardware
and PC accessories companies still invests their mayor budgets on windows
and less on linux.

This isn't even worth responding to, but I can't help it.
From someone who has great experience with many OSs and not swayed by marketing hype, lemming herding, or other cult issues. I can confidently say the following:
A simple analytic approach to OS determination reveals that Linux (& other Unix), Win-x, VxWorks, RTE, OSx, etc. each have specific application targets. Determine if your application requires mass market appeal for gaming & other toys, or be it industrial, or mission critical applications. Always choose the right tool. If you only have a hammer...step aside.
As for where the questioned services are provided...study the conceptual origin of DDE, Active X, etc. Unix has it, and much more. Don't get me started on the interprocess limitations of Windows! The
re's more to be held for those who have seen the possibilities.
Any comparison among OSs for 'the best' is like comparing apples, oranges, etc. Even a fruit stand attendent is more intelligent then to attempt such a feat! If you want a mango, buy a mango. But don't try to prove that it's better than any other.

Need some help from all out there
In our Sun Cluster 3.1 Data Service for Oracle RAC 9.2.0.7 (Solaris 9) configuration, my team had encountered
ora-29701 *Unable to connect to Cluster Manager*
during the startup of the Oracle RAC database instances on the Oracle RAC Server resources.
We tried the attached workaround by Oracle. This workaround works well for the 1^st time but it doesnt work anymore when the server is rebooted.
Kindly help me to check whether anyone encounter the same problem as the above and able to resolve. Thanks.

DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS:
It seems that the problem is with libskgxn9.so shared library.
For 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5 -> 9.2.0.6, the install log shows the following:

This means that while patching from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5, Installer copies the libcmdll.so library into libskgxn9.so, while patching from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.6 does not.
ORACM is located in /app/oracle/ORACM which is different than ORACLE_HOME in customer's environment.
WORKAROUND:
Customer is using the following workaround:
cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib make -f ins_rdbms.mk rac_on ioracle ipc_udp
