Preferred Unix Platform for DB server

Currently we are using HP Compaq Tru64 as the OS for all our DB servers,
as you are aware, this OS will be desupported in the future. Hence, we need to pick a new OS.
I am aware of Oracle has their preference in delivering DB server software and patches in different OS with a certain order.
Would you be able to provide me information on the preference ? Your answer will be an input of the process of selecting a new OS ?

Hello,
I can give you only my personal opinion. It seems, the preferred platform (from Oracle's point of view) is now Linux, although there's no official statement by Oracle (and no representative will give you a definite answer).

  • What is the best platform for Oracle Server?

What is the best platform for Oracle Server?
    What is your criterion?
    Thanks,
    Somsak B.

I believe that Oracle is developed and coded on a Solaris
platform and then ported to other operating systems. If that is
the case, you can assume that Solaris is the best platform or at
least the safest in terms of performance and risk.
If anyone knows anything to the contrary, pls correct me.

  • Which platform for the server

We are planning to buy Oracle Business Intelligence so that we can use Reports and Discoverer. Now, I want your input for the platform which should use, Windows or UNIX.
    The pluses for Windows :
+ font installation and support is easier than UNIX
+ speaking to printers is also easier
    The minuses for Windows :
    - that damn Registry
    - eat more RAM and CPU ressources
    - the cost of the operating system
You can guess that UNIX has the inverse minuses and pluses. If we go with Windows, I will look at Windows 2003 Web Server Edition since it's only for running Oracle BI, anyone running Reports on this OS ?

    hello,
all the different OSs' have pros and cons and it really depends on your infrastructure and you standards whether you want to go with windows or unix.
please consult the certification information for OracleBI for information on OS certifications.
    thanks,
    ph.

  • DB Connect for SQL on Unix Platform for BI 7.0

    Hi All,
My requirement is to extarct the data from MS SQL to BI on HP-UNIX server with Oracle data base. I have seen in lots of posts that we need have atleast one  Windows App.server to install DBSL and DB client on BI. But I have checked the BI System configurations in some fo the my previous clients, they have exact same config. as mine. They are using DB Connect without any issues. My basis team says that its not possible. Would anyone please update me on that. I have checked the system config. in system menu-->status. BI sytem config. of mine are:
    OS: HP-UX,
    DB: Oracle,
    Release: 10.2.0.2.0
    BI 2004s,
    Patch 14,
    External DB: MS SQL.
I apprecaite your answers with points, thanks in advance.

    Hi,
but what more than the help from SAP (<a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/58/54f9c1562d104c9465dabd816f3f24/frameset.htm">Transferring Data Using DB Connect</a>) do your basis group need?
Just ask them install the DBSL on the application server, of course in developpment....
the "DBSL installation" is nothing else than "uncaring" a file to a specific folder...
In my case, I didn't even had to restart the SAP instance, it worked properly as soon as the file was in the folder.
Of course you need to stop and restart the SAP instance to ensure everything is working fine...
    hope this helps...

  • Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization platform for LiveCycle server

    Hi everybody,
I have a client who asked me if LiveCycle supports Microsoft Hyper-V environment virtualization.  Is Hyper-V supported by latest versions of LiveCycle either ES3 SP2 or the new upcoming ES4?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi;
    we have R12.1.1 with database ( 11.1.0.7).
can we configure our R12 real time physical database on microsoft hyper v virtualizatised server ??
    Please review:
    https://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/entry/ebs1213_oraclevm
will this physical standby database on virtualization bear full load of users in case of switchover / failover ??We have some customer who use VM and they are happy. It dependes your expectation.

  • Preferred Hardware Plattform for  Linux RAC Cluster

What ist the preferred Hardware Platform
for using LINUX with Oracle RAC - Cluster solution ?
What do you prefer Suse or Redhat ?
Is there a tested Hardware Environment from Oracle Support ?
    Thanks

You have the disk space, but not the memory, even discounting the memory for the Oracle VM hypervisor, OEL/RH5 is going to take at least 1G to run. So, with your base OS, hypervisor, Linux and Oracle (clusterware and DB), it may be possible, but I believe you would be swapping so much you would have terrible performance. I would look at a MINIMUM of 3GB if not 4GB RAM to try this configuration.
    Cheers

  • How To Install Platform for Multiple Developers on Single UNIX Machine?

    Hello,
What is the best way to install the WL 8.1 Platform for multiple
developers on a single UNIX machine? These developers may start
    concurrent instances.
The problems I see are that the log files generated by Workshop would
be shared among concurrent users, permissions would need to be set so
that the user that is running the instance that creates the log files
will need to create the file with permissions that everyone can use. Are
there any other issues to doing this?
I could not find the information on this in the documentation.
    Thanks

I was referring in particular to the logs that are created by Workshop
itself (in the workshop directory). It creates workshop.log and netui.log.

    Steven,
which workshop log file are you referring to ?
the workshop log files are usually saved to the domain directory.
If the developers are each going to start their own server instances then
    there should be no issues.
The best option for you is to create multiple domains for each developer.
They will share the same workshop installation, but they will each have
    their own instances.

  • Differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform

    Hello,
J would like to know if there are some differences between Oracle 8i for a UNIX Platform and Oracle 8i for a Linux Platform.
I know that there are some differences on Oracle 8i Parallel Server and i know that some products are not include like precompiler (Mod*Ada, Pro*FORTRAN) on a Linux Platform.
    Thank you.

We have installed Oracle 8i on Solaris 8 and it had a great performance, of course that the hardware and licence invested here was costed my the office where i work. Personaly i'd installed linux reh hat 8 and oracle 8i, imagine that, it could be implemented by any individual that has the time to do so.
By buyinng from a company that has a good background you could be sure that you will have support.
Bottom line, if you have the $ to buy great hardware go for a unix platform. But if you don't a Red Hat Linux Server Licence with a 1 year sopport and Oracle data base is about 3500Dls.

  • Need suggestion on how to implement UNIX SSH connector for various server

    Hi everyone,
We have various unix servers like ubantu, redhat and mandrake . each unix type have serveral machines around 50+ each.
I want to have one resource object for each server type
    ex: ubantu, redhat, mandrake.
User will select on the server type and this will bring all itresources under this type.
Also when we install the connector it gives us one schedule task for group and user reconciliation. If i plan to have one RO for each of the server type what should I do to have one schedule task for each server type
How difficult it would be to implement this? any guidance on how to proceed with this?
    Thanks,

  • Need utilities class for application server file system (i.e. unix etc)

I need to do things to directories and files on the application server.
Is there an SAP class with methods for the application server file system (i.e. unix or whatever) with functionality similiar to what is provided by the methods of CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES for the presentation server?
Is there a group of SAP functions for this task?

You may have a look at Thomas Jung article: [sdn contribution : ABAP Server Side File Access, by Thomas Jung|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/7a13f367-0401-0010-47ba-eab0b15cf31c]
Moreover, in release 7.10, it could be possible that SAP introduced input and output stream classes (to mimic java classes), so I guess there could be the ones for application server file system.

  • When we go for shared Server environment?

When we go for shared Server environment from Dedicated server mode?
When we have to choose thi shared Server mode?
    Which is the optimized way?

    > When we go for shared Server environment from Dedicated server mode?
You do not. It is not one or the other - it is using both correctly. You want shared server sessions to service applications (any, from web/app servers to flat clients) that are OLTP in nature. They fire off short-and-sweet SQLs that takes a second or three to execute.
A shared server pool of a few processes can service a very large number of clients.
You want to use dedicated servers to service OLAP type clients. They fire off complex SQLs that can tie up the server processes for several minutes at a time.
And that in a nutshell is how to apply the two. It is not Shared Servers versus Dedicated Server. It is about using The Right Tool For The Job. Nothing more and nothing less.
As for Windows, I will not really bother quickly with shared server connections. On Windows both shared and dedicated servers runs as threads in the main Oracle executable process image.
There is thus very little resource saving by reducing the number of threads as the footprint of a thread is tiny in comparison to a brand new process. The amount of resources saved by a reducing the number of dedicated server threads is not significant. If anything, Oracle on Windows has shown to scale better than Oracle on Linux in this regard. (refer to [url http://www.perftuning.com/pdf/Comparison_Oracle_Windows_Linux.pdf]A Comparison of Oracle Database 10gR2 Real Application Cluster Performance on Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition x64 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux x86_64 from the Performance Tuning Corporation).
And this is exactly the opposite of how Oracle behaves on Unix. Each server process is a physical kernel process. This means that a servicing a 1000 concurrent sessions with a 1000 dedicated server processes, each consuming memory and resources, are expensive. Conversely, supporting a 1000 concurrent sessions with a 100 shared server processes is (almost) 90% cheaper.
This makes Shared Server a desirable option to use to scale OLTP sessions on Unix-based systems (or any platform where Oracle does not use multi-threading but multi-processing).
PS. As the Linux kernel support Posix threads (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_POSIX_Thread_Library), it begs the question as to when Oracle is going to support multi-threading on Linux instead of multi-processing.. or at least give us the option to choose.

  • Objects to be transported from Windows platform to Unix platform

    Hi experts
Our current development is on windows platform. and the production server will be on HP Unix platform.
I just wanted to know that is it possible to transport the webdynpro application and the portal contents.
Also wanted to know what all components need modification while transport.
Guide me the steps for the move.
    regards
    vija

Usually you shouldn´t have any issues transporting. Java bytecode is platform independent.
What CAN be an issue is the different endianess if you program yourself and assume, that the byte order is little endian - but if you stay on the webdynpro level you shouldn´t have any problems.
