Preferred video formats/Codecs other than QT/MOV?

We’ve got a project coming up that will involve a lot
of short (2 min) videos so I’m thinking it’s time to
review our video standards. The source is typically a mastered DVD
video disk (I know, not a good source but most corporate clients
don’t know any better) or in rare cases hi-rez MOV’s
straight off something like an Avid system. Either way we’ve
got to crunch these files into something that plays well with
Director 11/XP-SP2 and Vista (I love Mac’s but it has been a
long time since any of our clients cared if a project was Mac OS
compatible).
In the past we’ve used MPEG-1, MPEG-2 in limited
circumstances, and our current standard is 720 x 480, WMV-9 (main,
not the advanced profile), 1000-5000kbps depending on storage
constraints. Delivery is almost always disk based so bandwidth is
not an issue however some of our clients like the 3” mini-CDs
(180Mb) and even on a full sized CD storage is often a concern
(distribution of our projects on DVD-ROM is still uncommon). Lately
we’ve been getting requests to convert the source files to
FLV/On2 or Sorenson for web/Flash applications and I’ve been
wondering if it’s time to start using these in Director as
well. Has anyone been using this format or have opinions on getting
the best possible video into Director while still being compatible
with an average corporate user’s PC?

FLV/VP6 is excellent quality with small file size and
possible to play
within Director with no extra codec/application installed -
just through
FlashAsset Xtra. Highly recommended !!!

  • What video codecs other than "avc1" will show .mp4 as a TV program?

What video codecs other than "avc1" will show .mp4 as a TV program in iTunes?
Some of my TV shows have the video codec "mp4v" and show only as movies in iTunes.
My Philips portable DVD player will play .mp4's with video codec "mp4v" but not "avc1".
I'd like to save only one format of the files. Is there a conversion or update that will allow iTunes to identify the "mp4v" as a TV show?

  • What is the best video format/codec?

    Greeting Video Producers
Please tell me what is the best video format/codec overall? And please list them from best to worse.
    MPEG 4
    MPEG 2
    AVI
    DVI
    QUICKTIME MOV
    WMV
    THANK YOU

DVI isn't a format or codec; it is a digital signal protocol used for video display. DVI = Digital Video Interface.
Please define what "best" means in your context ... "best" for what?
WMV is one of the best in terms of viewer compatibility for web video, but it is not any good for DVD delivery.
MPEG-2 is one of the best for broadcast server-based playback and is required for DVD-Video delivery, but it is one of the worst for editing.
MPEG-4 is a more efficient codec than MPEG-2, but isn't as compatible for web delivery as WMV or Flash.
    AVI is a container.
    MOV is a container.

  • Video Formats & Codecs

What's the difference between a video format & codec, for example in PP you could export something using .mov format with h.264 codec, you could also export something using a H.264 format? Just trying to get some clarification so I could understand these things better.

thank you very much for your help.tips from Bill Hunt helped.some files in premiere imported good.with the help program MediaInfo I learned what codec have these files:
video codec - dv. audio codec -PCM.
With help program Nero i recoded necessary file into video codec -dv and audio codec - PCM.
    import the file completed successfully

  • Understanding video formats/codecs

what is a good reference for a beginner to understand video formats, compatibility, codecs, and the programs associated with converting these?
I'm using Final Cut Express. I friend with a macbook has a video on it that was in a '.mpg' format. He also had the same video in two folders that were ripped from a DVD, they had to folders for Video_RM and Video_TS, I think.
Anyways, I was hoping to pinch hit a quick video for him last night, rather simple 2-3 minute deal, where I use FCE to edit the video down. FCE didn't see the file as a movie. Neither did Quicktime 7 Pro.
I rummaged around these forums enough late last night to find that handbrake and VLC might help. I finally was able to convert the file using handbrake to a readable format, mPv. iTunes enjoyed playing that version and QT7 Pro would play it also. FCE didn't play nice though. Still stuck.
So I thought I'd be smart and let QT 7 pro convert the file to a .mov format while I slept. Right. 5 hours laters, my computer is still happily crunching away on the file and isn't quite 30% done if the progress bar is accurate.
Any suggestions and reference materials is appreciated.

Do not use Handbrake for this task. It is designed to convert DVD-Video into formats that play on other devices like iPods, iPhones, etc (converting one delivery format to other delivery formats).
Use MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to convert the DVD's VOB file into an editable format that matches your FCE Sequence settings. Typically that would be QuickTime DV/DVCPro NTSC with audio being AIFF, 48 khz, 16 bit.
what is a good reference for a beginner to understand video formats, compatibility, codecs, and the programs associated with converting these?
The FCE manual or help file is a good place to start. Also check this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_codec
For absolute basic information, understand that some codecs are for final delivery and some are meant for editing.

  • Generic Connector - Web Services - Format provider other than SPML?

    Hi.
Using OIM, I need to "talk" with Windows Sharepoint [Web] Services in order to provisioning an user (actualy, I need to associate a user to a Sharepoint Group).
To do that, I'm exploring the Generic Technology Connector capabilities.
From what I understand reading the documentation, the target Web Services have to "understand" the "SPML" format provider standard, and I didnt have found any evidences that the Sharepoint Services are SPML compliant.
    So, my questions are:
    1) Anyone knows of a GTC talking with Web Services non-SPML compliant (in particular, Microsoft-branded Web Services)?
    2) Are there alternative ways of doing what I need (using the Generic Connector... or not)?
    Thanks in advance.

the way we did it was to get the wsdl of the service you need to talk to.
try and create the client stubs with axis or xfire (depending on which version of axis you may need other than rpc/encoded format) create the standalone client to test you service.
once you get it working take you client code, jar it up into the ThirdParty directory along with the required jars for the service implementation.
then write your adapter using the code from the your client jar.

  • Playing other than Quicktime mov files

How do I get Quicktime to play Windows Media files in a full screen mode. I have the Flip forMac plug in but can't figure out how to change the settings to full screen mode. I also downloaded Windows Media Player 9 but can't figure out how to get files to work on that. I downloaded Real Player and got it to work in the settings but not WM files. Does anyone know how?

These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5)
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
    Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • Export slideshows to codec other than h.264?

I'm trying to export a slideshow I've created for use in a larger video project. I brought up the "custom" option in the slideshow export options in iPhoto '09 and changed my QT settings to fit within the Final Cut Pro project.
720x480, 29.97 fps etc. I changed the codec to a few different things (animation, prores, uncompressed) and every single time it snaps back to h.264 and turns the options for fast start and audio back on even though I unchecked them.
Anyone know how I can get iPhoto to stick with a higher quality codec? The compression really makes the photos ugly and they are going to be edited with other video elements and recompressed for DVD eventually... I was hoping iPhoto would save me from having to put moves on 160 photos!

    No.

  • NI Vision: Accepted video format/codec/size

    Hi,
I have basic LabView knowledge and I'm planning to process video files in NI Vision (object tracking). Recorded files are mov. Now I have some questions about video files in NI Vision:
    1. I have only seen older manuals (2010 and older), saying that NI Vision accept avi-files. I wonder if there's a version suitable for mov files now.
    2. What kind of files does NI Vision accept? (avi 1.0, avi 2.0,...)?
    3. Are there limitations concerning the codec? Is only one specific codec suitable for NI Vision? Or will my VI accept every codec that is installed on my computer?
    4. Is there a size limit for the files I read (and write)?
System: Windows XP, File system: NTFS
    Thanks!
    Jon

    Hi Jon,
have a look into this white paper, which gives you the answers to your questions and refers to the release of the LabVIEW Vision Development Module 2012 SP1:
AVI Codec Support with AVI2 in NI Vision Products
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/14466/en/
I think the most interesting information for you is:
"Through AVI2, on Windows any codec that is compatible with Microsoft's Video Compression Manager is available to the user. This means that the codecs recognized by Windows are recognized by NI Vision products as well."

  • Rented movie not playing. I have 81Mbps Internet and can stream anything else HD. it's not WiFi either because signal strength is full and I can view anything other than rented movies on apple TV unit. it charges me for renting but doesn't play

Rented "Gone Girl" on apple tv. It charges me, but will not play for more than 4 seconds at a time. I have exercised every step of apple's troubleshooting and nothing fixes the problem. I have a very strong, steady 81 Mbps Internet connection speed and can stream any other HD through the apple tv except for this rented movie. This is not the first time this has happened either. I just gave apple $6 for free and am currently watching the movie streaming through my cable provider's on demand channel with ease. Oh yeah, and when I seek apple support for the issue, apple wants $2 just to contact someone! Give me my money back please and I will never attempt to use your poor tv service again.

The limitation of approximately 200 titles has been discussed before, we can't be sure whether it will be something that gets fixed or not. I'm not really sure what your other issues are, if I use search instead of lists, I find whatever I want and am able to rent or purchase subject to those options being available for that particular title.

  • Preferred video format...from tape to...?

I have a client that will transcode from tape to digital file for me. Since I want great quality video what is the best format and specs I should ask them to deliver so I can edit directly with FCP?

Depends on the tape format. DV, HDV, DVCPRO HD...all can be captured natively. Digibeta, Beta, HDCAM, D5...all need to be captured into another format...Uncompressed.
    So...what have you got?

  • How come my mac cannot play video from sites other than youtube

The space the video occupies on the webpage remains black all the way

Did you do any of the following?
    Download from Adobe Flash Player
    Check Flash Version
Adobe strongly recommends that you first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html#main_1 0_4
Follow the instructions closely, such as quitting ALL applications first before installing. Repair permissions and restart your computer after the installation is completed.

  • What is the best video format to stream my movies?

So I was just curious as or what the best video format would be to stream movies from my personal cloud to my device. The reason I ask is because I have the 32GB mode and alas I do not want to copy movies over only to delete them later. Plus I would have access to them on all my devices (PC, windows, and android....soon a Mac mini) currently I have them in the .avi format because it just would not make sense to have four different formats uploaded to ,my four terabyte personal cloud especially when I own hundreds of DVDs. Now I noticed that there is a bit of pixelation on my iPad Air when streaming, my upload speed is like 5mbps and download is close to 25mbps. I have several other devices communicating with my router, but they are inactive..so to say. The connection strength is strong (on my desk next to my bed. Speaking of streaming my movies how do I clear the actual cache (may not be called that on Apple). Thought it was on settings, but alas I was unable to find it.

As long as your video is transferred via Firewire into a DV AVI type 2 file (I don't know your camera) your edit footable is the best you can get
If what you want to create is a DVD, you already have Encore bundled with PrPro (I have the CS3 version of both)
Simply export as DV AVI and give that file to Encore... then tell Encore to use the AUTOMATIC setting when creating the DVD
Otherwise, work through all of the steps here http://ppro.wikia.com/wiki/Troubleshooting
If your problem isn't fixed, report back with the DETAILS asked for in the questions at the end of that link

  • Does ipad 3 support adobe flash and other various video formats?

does ipad 3 support adobe flash and other various video formats? Thanks/////!

Flash is not a video format. Flash is a platform that consists of a scripting language, and plug-in or application that presents a canvas and resources to run the scripts. It is possible for Flash to load video and play them in the canvas, but the video itself is a separate resource. Flash became a popular mechanism for video plaback mostly because the plugin was available for multiple browsers and the video codecs that Flash could load were consistent across multiple platforms, which made coding easier. It also made it simpler to add advertising overlays (especially before CSS3), and it was also a popular mechanism to distribute viruses.
In November of 2011, Adobe stopped development of and licensing of the use of Flash on mobile platforms, citing that HTML5 makes the primary uses for Flash obsolete. There is no version of Flash for iOS, or new or future versions of Android.
Adobe further indicated that they will be phasing out Flash plug-in support as well (such as the plugins used in Desktop web browsers), instead aiming to make Flash applications stand-along applications running on the desktop. No time table for that has been set, though they've just recently phased out Linux development. However, Flash is being actively developer for native applications and Adobe makes Flash Builder and AIR that allow you to make native applications for iOS and Android using the Flash development tools.
With regard to video formats... iOS natively supports MPEG-4 and various profiles thereof, and it supports the use of the HTML5 <video> tag to embed video in pages and in applications that leverage the WebKit environment to implement their UI. There are also apps that display other video formats.
