Preflight Help in InDesign CS5
I am having a problem in InDesign with image errors in the preflight. It says, "content generates cyan, magenta, or yellow plate", it then says I must fix them to a CMYK. The company I am designing this for requires I use RGB images. So, my question is this, do I have to change these images, or are they fine in RGB? If not fine in RGB how do I fix them and what will this do to the fact that they need to be RGB?
Thanks so much,
Carmella Mae Dunkin
That's only an issue if you are printing using Black ink only. Preflight presumes that you are going to print on a press where you have only CMYK and Spot inks available, so your RGB images would need conversion at some point in time. That conversion can be done before placing, during export, or in the Printer's RIP. This makes it not terribly helpful for RGB workflows as it won't differentiate between RGB conversion and "real CMYK" when looking at the sparations (plates) that would be generated.
Below that check is one called Color Spaces and Modes Not Allowed that you could use to flag anything that's really in CMYK, but this is going to generate even more "errors" since everything defined as [Black] is in CMYK mode. It is safe to ignore those warnings, too, unless they apply to an element like a graphic or image that must be RGB (this is really the only way I know for Live Preflight to kick out warnings about CMYK images in an RGB workflow). The old preflight is still there (the first screen in File > Package is really the old Preflight), and it will list images, along with their color spaces, but won't tell you about native objects created in ID.
The bottom line here is if your printer asked for RGB images, that's what you should send. All will be fine.

Can you help with InDesign CS5 index problem?
This is my first attept at creating an Index. I've pretty much tried everything I can think of to get this index to work properly. I think I might have made some fundamental errors in creating this document. I created a document and not a book. I placed 5 text files without linking them. I thought I could simply use the index panel and enter my words from the toc and front matter and InDesign would find all the occurences in the document. But when I ran the index I got the toc pg numbers and the index pg numbers only, i.e., Illumination vi-225 (p225 being the index pg). So far I have:
reentered all the index entries to using the "whole document" because I had originally chose "This page" for each entry - that didn't work
then I threaded the 5 text files thinking that might work - nope!
then I saved the file as a book and tried using that - that didn't work.
And yes, I have searched the Adobe CS5 help books, videos, online sites, etc. I'm hoping it's something simple! I would truly appreciate any help with this. Thank you!
SueYou don't have any Shape layers, so you won't have any fill or stroke options. If you had a rectangle and line layer, you have either deleted them, or caused them to be rasterized. That would also remove any Fill and Stroke options from the Options bar.
The 'little camera' at the bottom of the Tool bar, is the Quick mask icon. Clicking on it toggles between standard and Quick mask modes, like you said. Clicking on it is exactly the same as hitting the q key. It has absolutely nothing to do with Shape layers.
What you need to do now, is regroup. What exactly are you trying to achieve, and what do you expect to see in your Workspace? You will have noticed that your workspace is context sensitive. It automatically changes according to what tools are selected, or what function you are using at any particular time. -
Need help reinstalling indesign cs5 (master collection)
I want to know if I put in the original discs...does this override and reinstall the entire collection? Or is there a way to only reinstall this particular program. Also there is not one currently to uninstall?
Hi,
I am sorry but CS5 is not in sales anymore. If you wish you can go for Creative Cloud which will give additional software including Master Collection and many more features at a very cost effective price.
You can visit Adobe.com for further details.

InDesign CS5.5 hangs on startup (Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
Newly installed CS5.5 from disc + online update. InDesign hangs shortly after startup.
Found some suggestions in this thread on CS5:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3116186
Fixed by deleting the SING datastore folder, as per Adobe support document, which doesn't yet say it applies to CS5.5.
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408816.html
Hope this helps someone.InDesign CS5.5 currently crashes on launch when launching from the dock or the app direct, throwing up a crash report (http://pastebin.com/8dNiiSWu).
This crash is from opening a Flash file (SWF) inside the PMWelcomeScreen plugin. You can try moving Plug-Ins/PMPack/PMWelcomeScreen.InDesignPlugin out of the plugins folder, as a workaround only. You won't get the Welcome Screen, but that's perhaps a small price to pay. Not sure which flash file it is opening and failing on. Are you behind a firewall?
If launching from a document, InDesign launches, throws up a crash report, but you can still work on the document. Can still print/pdf but on closing another crash report is thrown up.
Sorry, this doesn't really make sense. If InDesign crashes, you cannot continue to work in it. Perhaps you are getting confused by previous crash reporter dialog windows that you have not dismissed or submitted so were still hanging around. Also, sometimes they take quite a while to pop up -- not always contemporaneous with the crash. -
InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file
I need guidance to open an artwork file that in one hour I have to send to the print shop. InDesign refuses to open its own file.
Any clue? Adobe, please help.Re: InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file
Bob and Peter
Thank your for helping us out. It was really necessary to ask a coworker to open the file and export it in InDesign markup language.
Three hours later than expected, but it's done!
We are stuck here. I'm a Master Collection user of CS5, using only Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Bridge and Acrobat Pro. (I don't know why I bought the Master's). My coleague former Window user, got a Mac in May and downloaded the trial version of Design Studio Standard Collection of CS5.5. Before expiring, we purchased its license and filled it in the active trial version.
A couple of months ago we noticed that were missed Plug Ins on his version and contacted Adobe who instructed us to download the whole files again. We never did because it is a pain to get rid of the missing parts of a pre installed trial version etc.
I will ask Adobe to send a CD disk for his version.

Hi All,
I've got a client that's running into an intermittent crashing problem with InDesign. Ordinarily "intermittent" points to hardware, but we wanted to rule out bad software first, especially as InDesign is the ONLY application that's crashing on this system. The crashing doesn't seem to correspond to any given task that's executed within InDesign either. This is an iMac 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 (mid 2011 model), 8 GB of RAM. Original this iMac was running Snow Leopard with InDesign CS5 (7.0.4), and crashing fequently then. For numerous reasons including the crashing we did an erase and install of the OS, this time installing 10.8.2, and a fresh install of CS5 and ran all updates from Adobe (to 7.0.4), and then ran a Disk Permissions repair (we have not updated to 10.8.3 due to reports I've seen of more crashing with InDesign CS5). Fonts and InDesign application support files from ~/Library were migrated over manually, but no other user data. The crashing occurs within two user accounts on this fresh OS (one of which was created to troubleshoot with as a clean environment) so isn't likely user account related but due to fonts that may not be confirmed. Being that it's intermittent it's been quite hard to track down. Linotype Font Explorer is installed on this system and I have just now disabled the font activation plugins in case that is part of the problem here; haven't had a chance yet to let the system run without those to see if the problem is resolved. Two recent crash logs (below) show different activity causing the crash (I've included thread 0 only, but can post more if requested; my experience has been that thread 0 will usually give you what you need, but given that we're seeing different cuases here I'm at a loss). We have tried fresh RAM in the system in case this was related to bad memory, and that made no difference. Font caches for both applications and the OS have been cleared and fonts showing any missing printer font files have been disabled. Any help would be greatly apprecaited.
Many thanks,
Mike

This is happening with multiple InDesign projects in a design office environment where many others work on the same files and none of the other computers are having problems with these files. I've removed the same files listed (thank you for those) before and did so effectively with creating the new user account to test with, but it had no effect. I just tried again though, as these files could easily have becone corrupt again if they were being written to when InDesign crashed. Will let you know if that makes any difference. I've also gone through and completely cleaned out the fonts again and once more cleared the font caches. If need be I'll reboot this system into safe mode and try that way.

Help with numbering lists in Indesign CS5.5 for epub file
I am working with a book in Indesign CS5.5 to export it as an epub file. I have been working on formatting the text and I have run into a small problem. Throughout the book there are multiple lists within the texts that need to be numbered. Each list, however, must start over at number 1 and not be continued on from the previous list. The lists are all unrelated and I need them to be completely separate. I used "Type", "Bullets and Numbering", then "Apply Numbering" to begin with. This had each list in the correct order. However, I also created a paragraph style with the correct font, size, indentation, and spacing that must be applied to all the lists before exporting. When I do this, everything keeps its correct formatting except that some of the lists continue their numbering from the previous list. For example, on page 1 I might have a list of four things all formatted correctly and number 1 through 4. On page 3, I have another list, of completely unrelated items. I therefore would like this list to be started over at number 1, but when I apply the paragraph style to it, it starts at 5, picking up where the last list left off. I need to keep these as the assigned paragraph style but it messes up the numbering. If anyone could help me figure out how to keep this from happening I would greatly appreciate it!
If you don't mind cracking open the ePub and editing template.css, then adding rules like:
h2 {
page-break-before: always;
should force each paragraph whose style is mapped to an h2 tag on to a new page. Whether or not it works will depend on how good the ePub reader is at implementing CSS. It seems to work for Digital Editions and also Kindle, if you convert ePub to Kindle format.
This doesn't help at all if you are trying to force sections into separate XHTML files, though. -
Have just down loaded Yosemite over Mountain Lion, Indesign CS5 does not work ( Am dependant on it) although Bridge , Light Room and Elements operate OK How do I solve this rapidly. Can any one help on this issue. Thanks
Sorry to say it, but I think you can see from Bob's response that there's no way to solve this rapidly.
Did you take an image of your Mountain Lion install before upgrading to Yosemite? Roll back to that. If you're not in the habit of taking a snapshot of your system before performing operating system upgrades - get in that habit. If you are dependent on anything at all on hour computer, having a reliable backup method in place is essential. If you don't have a Time Capsule, or some other way to run Time Machine onto a disk that's not in your computer, go set that up yesterday.
If you can't just remove Yosemite and roll back to Mountain Lion for whatever reason, you can partition your drive so that you can install both Yosemite and Mountain Lion on the same drive, and then boot into Mountain Lion when you need to work in CS5. Or you can take your Mountain Lion disc (I assume you have one, no?) and then use it to create a virtual machine in something like VirtualBox to run Mountain Lion from inside Yosemite. -
InDesign CS5 is not opening after deactivation/activation. How can I fix this? Illustrator and Photoshop open and are working fine. Please help!
First of all, thank you for replying so promptly to my posts this morning!
I can't remember how I got the software on his computer, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't through migration assistant.
I was looking into doing an uninstall of InDesign and a fresh install. However, I initially downloaded the CS5 suite digitally and I can't find out how I am able to perform a fresh install of InDesign. Do you know where I find this info or gain access to download just InDesign again? I can't seem to find anything in my Adobe account that shows where I might do another download. -
[AS] Beast of a script needs help converting from Quark 8 to InDesign CS5
First off, THANK YOU for even reading this post. Here's the dilema. I work in a publishing company that used an AppleScript from Quark 8 to automate our pagination from set text we pull from our sales reps worksheets. About 8 months ago we switched fully to InDesign CS5, but have had to hold onto Quark 8 to be able to keep running our pagination. I'd like to see if the geniuses (yes, I've been trolling these forums looking to solve this myself and seen some great problems fixed) on these forums can help me figure out the proper conversion I would need to be able to leave Quark 8 in the rearview.
Here's our current code... (I warned you it was a beast)
