Prelude Vs Lightroom

I am soon to travel to Europe for 3 months. I will be taking photos and videos of my trip. One output will be a movie made with Premiere Pro after I get home.  I have been experimenting with Lightroom 4 and Prelude 1 as a mechanism to copy the video to my laptop.  LR gives me the option of automatically sequentially renaming the video files on import and imports the MTS files only.  Prelude does not automatically find the video files amd does not allow me to automatically rename the files. Prelude imports the entire directory structure from the card. This is slightly larger than the LR import. Prelude is also significantly slower.
I will be doing no video editing whilst I travel but my wife might like to look at the raw files. I can do this with Windows Media Player. Prelude allows me to make a rough cut and show that but I think it is a lot of effort for little gain.  It also allows me to comment on each clip but if I rename them they are really self explanatory.
LR gives me the opportunity to make some adjustments which I may or may not feel inclined to do.  Prelude does not.
Prelude does give me dynamic link to Premiere Pro so it is a trivial step to start the final production but the import dialogue from PP is very good and starting from scratch using the MTS files imported by LR is not much harder. No matter what I will still need to import stills into PP.
At this time I cannot see a reason to load Prelude onto my laptop.
Am I missing something important?

Lightroom is the way to go. I have recently completed a trip and this was the simplist solution.
What is really going to help you is metadata.
You should make sure that Lightroom does not strip out the metadata from your movie files on import.
Once imported you should be able to add keywords and other relevant data like GPS (the map function in Lr works brilliantly - simply drag a file over the map and the GPS info is added).
When you bring the files into Pr technically all of the metadata and keywords you applied should be present. I've never been able to make this work in Pr but it works great in FCP X, though sadly this is not what I usually edit with.
I'm hoping that the Pr/Pl CC versions will resolve metadata transfer.
Good luck and enjoy Europe.

  • Why is metadata so different in Prelude as compared to Lightroom and Bridge?

As a still photographer now shooting video, I'd like to have a similar workflow for video clips that I have for my still images for metdata entry. However, metadata seems to be completely different for video. I'd like to be able to enter common metadata entries for my still and video images at the same time. Both Lightroom 4.2 and Bridge CS6 make it look like this is possible, but the metadata only seems to be available from within those programs and doesn't transfer outside the program either in the file itself or in xmp sidecar files. I looked at Prelude and the metadata categories are completely different. I'm mostly concerned with the IPTC fields and the GPS fields that Lightroom applies using the Maps function. I understand that video has additional fields unique to video, but IPTC and GPS seem like they could be shared. My ultimate goal is to catalog the video files in our DAM, Canto Cumulus, which is accessible by hundreds of users. Photo Mechanic seems to write IPTC to an XMP file for video files, which can be read by Cumulus. It seems like Adobe should have similar functionality. Am I missing something?

  • Bridge/Prelude/Premiere/Encore, Arrrgh! Workflow/Asset Managment overload! Help.

I've been viewing a tutorial series in addition to some random one's on the web, mostly covering functionality, but what isn't clear to me (yet) has to do with asset management and workflow. I know enough to understand that these two areas are the most important aspects of the whole process; without organized asset management and an orderly, systematized, hierarchical approach to accomplishing tasks the creative side of things will suffer dramatically at the worst time.
Regarding asset management, I have three separate drives for for audio, video, and stills. All the files reside in their original locations except for video files that I originally had stored on my stills drive. These video files were copied to my video drive into the Adobe Folder> Premiere Projects Folder> Project Name Folder. In addition, I have a folder on the video drive called "Raw Footage" that I'm using for random footage unrelated to any project; sort of a personal stock footage resource.
As a practice project for the tutorial series I'm using assets from a 45 day Rail Pass tour I took a few years ago. Assets include SDDV. m2ts, and mov, files with different sample rates, in addition to jpg and psd files.
Where would the following programs come into play and at what point in the workflow does the transition from one to the other begin and/or overlap?
    Bridge
    Prelude
    Premiere
    Encore
Where does Bridge come into play and when?
There are folders with m2ts files on my stills drive that I've copied and pasted to my video drive. Should I have used Prelude to ingest and "Transfer Clips To Destination" ("destination" being my video drive)? Should I have transcoded to a less resource hungry format and, if so, does Prelude create an EDL that can be used to conform the final edit replacing the low rex clips files the the original higher rez files?
I know I have to capture SDDV as DV (not HDV) with Premiere but what else do I need to know about such capture? As far as actual editing goes the tutorials are covering a lot of that.
Eventually I'll use Encore to author a proper DVD that is compatible with every DVD or Blu-ray player. Right?
I guess the question could be, "What is yout multi asset workflow?"
I feel like such a noob.
    Thanks.

    Michael,
I thought that might be the case. Sigh!
Well, as far as I can tell, if I were you, I would offer it with an alI I-Frame option first. That would probably be the easiest to implement cleanly. Those who can shoot that way would probably start shooting that way. Me included.
Then, take the AVCHD from a few of the most popular cameras, Canon, Nikon and of course, the Panasonic DMC-GH3 (my camera) and whatever video cameras are popular right now. Back up to the beginning of the long GOP and finish at the end of the long GOP. There is no need to get too specific with frames for subclips. After all, anyone who does not leave handles on their subclips while ingesting gets what they deserve anyway. In fact, there should be an option to always add one second of handles to every subclip. Personally I would leave that on as a default.
As for me, I recently posted a few videos using different codecs for people to download to test them. The links can be found in this forum post along with a short discussion: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1239519?tstart=0
I usually use 50Mb/s 60p using the MOV format, but if I was to shoot anything serious, I would probably shoot 72Mb/s 24p. Keep in mind, that if Adobe made it possible to ingest subclips without transcoding,I would change what I shot to all I-Frame for almost everything, either at 30p or 24p. And if you did it for my 60fps MOV files, I would be ecstatic.
I don't shoot AVCHD but I suppose that so many people do that the moment you gave the feature to all I-Frame shooters, there would be a huge clamor for AVCHD.
In my opinion, this could be a major game changer and everyone who could would start using Prelude without a second thought. Like photographers are flocking to Lightroom 5, this would be the videographers Lightroom. Reelroom? Naw. Prelude is a good enough name.

  • Prelude Capture

    Hi!
Will prelude work with tape ingest from firewire and from capture cards from AJA, Blackmagic and Matrox?
    Prelude can export to Tape?
    Thanks

Lightroom does import video into its library and has the ability to catalog that video with keywords and ratings and to perform searches on the metadata. Unfortunately, it doesn't support the captured files from my HDV cameras. In a perfect world, I would have a single repository for all of my video, stills, and audio and be able to find anything with ease. Bridge has not worked well for me since the stills I organize and develop in LR form such a large percentage of my assets.
I'm working on an eBook project which involves a few hundred stills, several thousand more stills that are combined into time-lapse sequences, a few hundred video clips from three different cameras that are being edited in Premier Pro with some dynamic linking to After Effects, and a bunch of music tracks and voice over tracks. The hardest part of all of this has not been the technical aspects of the software nor the creative decisions to tell the most effective story. It has been keeping all of the source and intermediate pieces organized in a way that doesn't drive me crazy. Lightroom makes it easy for me to find any photo in a few seconds. The media browser in Premier Pro is vastly more primitive. Being able to catalog and search in LR for all of my assets could be good solution for me if all my formats were supported. Exporting assets from LR to a Premiere Pro project would also be nice. I'm looking forward to seeing if there is anything in CS6 such as Prelude that can streamline my workflow.
    Words of wisdom greatly appreciated.

  • Rename files in Prelude?

I don't see a way to rename video files in Prelude.  Coming from a still photo background I have always renamed files to a sensible name at the point of import.  If this can't be done in Prelude is there a suggestion on how to do this before prelude?  Kind of a prelude to using prelude?!?  For now I will continue to import and rename both still and vid files in Lightroom but would like to see this in Prelude.
    Thanks.

    Hi Mike
    Thanks for your response.
Actually this is my first time working with the file based system. XDCAM. Usually the guys give me a single video file for footage and use it just it straight up.
But since I was given an XDCAM I did a search and came across this post. So being my first time not sure how helpful I can be but let me give you my current workflow so maybe this can help answer your question above.
I don't work with producers or directors I work with the end user or "viewer" as the case may be. So they are not technical and I can not tell them to get a copy of prelude and mark it up for me.
What I do is take the raw footage and transcode to a web friendly size ( at this point quality is not the issue but cut points are) and load them up to my site for the client to review and give me notes according to timecode.
Now when I load 20 of these up there and need to link them to my pages I like the files to be something I can understand. So I don't have to write down some sort of reference sheet so I can put the correct video on the correctly worded page.
Of course I can easily batch transcode in media encoder but it is nice to be able to view the files as a group in prelude. (and would be nice to) rename each one while I am looking at it and know what clip it is. then transcode all in one step renanming the originals as an alias if you like in the project panel but would like my transcoded files to be renamed also for the upload.
Not sure how it all works across the other programs yet, but I would like that if I can once on the initial ingest rename files to something I can easily understand what they are and be able to use that across the holy trinity Prelude, Premiere and After Effects. That would be most helpful

  • Premiere Workflow With Lightroom

I have Adobe Premiere CS6 and Lightroom 4.1.  I like both. But I'd like to figure out a better workflow for copying my AVCHD video files (Panasonic GH2) from SD cards to my computer and managing them.
Even though I've been using PhotoShop for years, I now do almost all of my still image post processing in Lightroom.   While it seems to have some new video editing features, it's still seems like it's focused on the traditional, photography, single-file paradigm - each file is a distinct piece of art that has little or no relationship with other files taken at the same time.
Obviously this is different from video where each piece of art is a combination of multiple media types (e.g. video, audio, stills, etc.) and most of the time there are multiple instances of each media type, all of which need to be combined into seamless end result.   Premiere does a great job of this.  However...
It's the media import and management aspect that I'm unhappy with.  Prelude is an option, but it seems to have some media management features but not as robust as Lightroom.   In addition, the position of Prelude in the overall video creation workflow is unclear to me.
So I'm perplexed.  I'd like to manage all of my media in a single place.   Even though this post is about Premiere, I spend at least as much time working on stills as video.  So a single media management tool (like lightroom) is my goal.   Unfortunately the overall Adobe management solution is still not as integrated as I'd like.   So...
How do you manage you media?   How do you deal with the first stages of your workflow starting with the capture tool (camera, sound recorder, etc.) media card?   What tools do you prefer?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    Regards,
    Dan.
p.s. I'm an amateur in this.  I've been taking pics for 58 years (since I was 7), but I'm not a pro.   So my needs probably won't match a pro's needs.

    IMO...
Photoshop and Premiere, and several other Adobe products are essentially products with a legacy approach - incredibly powerful tools for single purpose.   Historically, products and people were pretty much single purporse...
Photoshop did photography stuff and Premiere did video stuff.   Photographers and video guys (and ladies) were two different groups with two different languages.  And there are also audio guys who did audio stuff, writing guys who did writing stuff, drawing guys who did drawing stuff, and web guys who did web stuff.
At the Pro level this is still true.  But for many Pros and most amateurs, this single-purpose world doesn't exist exist any more.  We wear multiple hats.   The tools (like the GH2) capture mutiple types of media.   The GH3 will extend this.  Portable audio mini-recorders like the Zoom H1 extend it further.  Powerful, easy to use script-writing tools like Celtx extend it further.   And then we have the internet...
I'm a professional software developer.  I don't do web pages professionally, but I've created a few, including a weather website (in progress) for Bellevue, Washington.  Web pages use multiple types of media.  It's normal to see a website with text, still images, video, audio, drawings and combinations of the three.
So how do you manage all this stuff?  Not very well, IMO.  Adobe products don't do well here...
Lightroom comes the closest because it stores metadata externally in a database.  For example you can apply metadata to .MTS files (try that in Bridge).   And you can group and stack files.  BUT... It doesn't manage a very wide array media - just photos and videos.   And you can't create a stack of clips and send it to Premiere.
Bridge seems to work with well with certain types of media only. Try adding a keyword to a .MTS file.   And it seems to be Photoshop-centric.   Many of the Bridge features seem to be nothing more than a prettier interface to standard Windows (Mac?) features.   Lightroom easily does most of what Bridge does plus a whole lot more.
As I wrote above, I just don't get Prelude.  It's UI is kinda/sorta Adobe-like, but uses unique terms like "ingest" (sounds like a bodily function).   What's worse is that it's media management and editing features are poor.   I.e. I don't see any added value over just using Premiere.
IMO, Adobe should extend Lightroom to be the entry point for all media-related products of any type.   It should have the ability to import, preview, and manage any type of file photos, videos, audio, text files, Word docs, Celtx files, etc.   For photos, videos, and audio, it should have modules that can provide at least some minimal editing features.   And most importantly...
To the greatest extent possible, it should have the ability to send media and other files to other applications for editing, and then manage the modified file that is returned.  It's probably not feasible to do this with all apps, but it should be able to send files to apps like Premiere, Premiere Elements, Photoshop, Audition, and Soundbooth.
    OK... /Rant = OFF.
    Thanks,
    Dan.

  • Prelude vs DAM vs Cloud Services

lately I've been noticing a lot of cloud video production services emerging...
    http://aframe.com/
    http://www.axlevideo.com/
    http://www.shotgunsoftware.com/
seems to me that Adobe is in the perfect position to provide this same type of service via Prelude, Creative Cloud, and Adobe Anywhere.
I've read on these forums that Adobe doesn't consider Prelude to be a DAM, but I really wish it was.  I need Lightroom for video, with cloud collaboration features.
does anyone else feel this way?  Final Cut Server seemed to be the start of something heading in the right direction but that sure didn't pan out.
fingers crossed for Adobe to lead the way

Great suggestions, Dan. Prelude has a deep set of APIs for third parties to integrate with and indeed we have collaborated with companies like those you list.

  • Why doesn't Lightroom 4 create xmp files for mov files?

This would be useful for moving files to other applications and databases. As far as I can tell Adobe doesn't share any metadata for .mov files between any of it's CS6 programs either, Bridge, Prelude, Premiere, etc. As a still photographer who is now shooting DSLR video I want to get metadata entered as soon as possible for my still and video files. It would be best to do both stills and video at the same time. Camera Bits Photo Mechanic is the only program I've found so far that does this. Canto Cumulus is able to read Photo Mechanic's xmp files. I don't really need Photo Mechanic in my workflow except for this issue.

  • Prelude update in CC seen as virus by Norton

    Hello,
    I have CC CS6, running Windows 7 pro and Norton 360 anti-virus version 6.2.1.5.
This morning there was an Adobe uodate for Prelude. While installing the update, my norton security flagged one of the program files (mc_config_mp2v.dll) as having a high potential as being a virus and quarantined it. However, the update said that it installed successfully (?).
Has anyone else had this experience? For Adobe - is there a problem with this file or was it a flase positive? Will my update still work with this file quarantined or will I need to try and remove it from quarantine?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Lightroom imports photos to wrong folder

I've been importing lots of photos from my hard drive into lightroom and been moving/renaming them in the process. I only got lightroom a few weeks ago.
This has worked fine but i've recently imported a few hundred photos off my iphone and doing the same thing - move and rename. The trouble is, these photos keep going into the 2009 folder, instead of the 2012 or 2013 folders that they should be. When i look at the photos, they have the correct name, and the capture date seems to be correct, its just lightroom keeps wanting to put them in the wrong folder by year. Does anyone understand why this might be happening?
naturally I want all my photos sorted into the right date folders as this is the way ive decided to organise my photos...

hmm so still not making sense. it keeps wanting to import my photos into the wrong destination. have removed all the photo from lightroom. how do i change it so it automatically puts the photos into the corresponding year/month they were taken..
I understand its something in the import settings/destination but cant seem to change this. not sure what parts of the import box your wanting to see Dj.
the structure now is my pictures/2009/21-7-09 then its creating new year folders and sorting them within this 21-7-9 folder..
    can't see to change this?

You might be quicker help posting in the LR forum rather than the ACR forum, but I believe the way to fix this is to delete the preview cache.
    Find your catalog folder.
    Close LR.
Within the catalog folder, delete the FOLDER called Catalog-Name Previews.lrdata
    Start LR.
