Prem Pro 3.2: Unsupported or Damaged File

I get this whenever I import XDCam footage from a LOCAL drive.
I can only import XDCam footage if it's on a NETWORK drive.
The moment I copy the footage to a local drive, Premiere can no longer open the footage, as it displays "Unsupported or damaged file".
This is a new installation of Premiere CS3. I gave up on CS4, uninstalled the whole shebang, and ran the cleanup script, then installed CS3.
Now I've got this weird problem that it can't import XDCam footage if it's on a local hard drive. Loads fine from the network, but the moment it's copied to local drive, it won't load anymore. Many of these pieces of copied footage imported into CS4 last week without error. But they won't load into CS3.
I could have sworn that XDCam footage is not locked to the path that it was captured to with XDCam Clip Browser. One should be able to move it around and still be able to import it to Premiere Pro CS3, right?
Totally dumbfounded by this anomoly.

Apparently, it's not enough to copy the folder containing the MP4, XML, SMI files, etc. The clip I wanted was just 119MB. But to get the use of it, I found that I had to copy the entire 37GB of root XDCam folder over to the machine's local drive and THEN I could open the 119MB file. Yup.. apparently CS3 needs something that is in the root folder, two levels above the folders containing the actual video.
In messing around with CS4, I'd forgotten that, because CS4 apparently doesn't need those vestigial text files to import the video clip.
Oh well. At least CS3 is running fine. CS4 just would not run at all on this machine.

  • RED Unsupported or Damaged File

I keep getting this "unsupported or damaged file" error when previewing or trying to import RED footage. The footage has been sitting on the same drive same system same project and it just goes out suddenly. So far, this has been happening for over one year and still nobody has figured it out. I think I will have to go back to FCP 7. At least that program is stable.
Adobe, if you are reading this, please email me asap and let me know why this is happening. I have three projects and none of them can be worked on until this is resolved...about to lose my clients now.

I have two Mac Pro Towers, one 8 core old machine, and the 12 core. Strange thing is...the older 8 core machine is doing fine...although slow, it reads the same RED files in Premiere with no issues, but the 12 core machine fails often and when it does, there is no chance of making it work again unless you shut it off for days...
The 12 core machine has a Kona 3 Card and I went to the Kona site to update all the software and plug ins today...no such luck. Still doesn't read RED files in Premiere.
I can send you files but they are HUGE 4K files. And we know the files are not corrupt because the other machines process them fine...so me thinks it might be something within the 12 core machine that is messing up things.

  • AVI Unsupported or damaged file

    Hi
I have recently shot some footage on my Sony Z7 with external memory recording unit. I am shooting DVCAM as it needs to go onto a DVD when it is edited. I tested the file format that it worked okay and it seemed fine to import with small file sizes of test footage. I shot my footage which was a two hour performance. Each file is 3.97gb and when I try to import I get 'unsupported or damaged file'. The files play fine in VLC and Windows Media Player. Also the last file (as I stopped recording) was smaller that 3.97gb and that imports okay (well with square pixels so have to tell premiere to change but other than that okay!)
So it was shot on a Sony Z7 and captured using the external memory recording unit as DVCAM.
I checked the codec and it is 'DVSD'
Does anyone have any advice on how to get premiere to accept it without converting it and therefore losing quality. I find it strange that it accepts smaller versions of the same file and just not the maximum 3.97gb files. If anyone has any answers that would be great :-)
    Thank you
    Danny

  • Premier won't let me import a simple AVI file? Says "unsupported or damaged file." Help!

I did a 3d animation in 3ds max and I rendered it as an AVI, per my instructor, and then tried to import it into Premier to be able to add audio and edit it a little. When I try to import any of the files (I had three different cameras in 3ds max so I rendered 3 different AVI's) it just says "Unsupported or damaged file" for all three of them. The files play just fine in media player and work everywhere else on the computer, but stupid premier won't let me import! What should I do? I'm worried if I convert it to another file type that it'll destroy the compression. This is for a class and we have to have a very specific file size and type. Please help me!
P.S. I'm not very good with code and programming, I don't know what a CODEC or a wrapper or any of that stuff is, please just give me suggestions of what to do and how to do it. Thanks so much!

  • PE4 Unsupported format/damaged file

I get this message 'Unsupported format/damaged file. One of the necessary components may not be installed.'
I use an Hitachi HDD video camera. It came with image mixer 3 software that I use to import the video onto my PC. It saves the files as mpeg 2 and then in PE4 I can import the media into my project to make videos with.
This has always worked and I just made 6 small videos the other day in this manner. Now I just tried doing this today and I get that error message and the mpegs are unrecognized by PE4. I tried it with the mpegs that I used just 3 days ago and I have the same problem.
I have uninstalled and then reinstalled PE4, I used gspot to make sure I have the proper codecs for the mpegs, quicktime is up to date. I'm not sure what else to try.
Anyone have any ideas? I have some clips that I need to get made.
    Thanks

Any solution is a good solution, djeeper.
MPEGs and video from hard disk cameras can be a bit iffy in programs like Premiere Elements. If it works, great! But sometimes they do work and sometimes they don't. (You can increase the odds they will work by downloading and installing the K-Lite Codec Pack -- but even that's no guaranteed solution.)
If you want a solution that works every time all the time, you'll want to convert any MPEGs into DV-AVIs before you bring them into Premiere Elements, per our FAQs at the top of this forum.

  • Unsupported or damages files

I downloaded my RAW files though lightroom and everytime i close and open LR5, certain images will have unsupported or damaged files. Then I go directly to the file in the folder and open it with CS6 and same thing.
What is causing lightroom to do this? Is it hardware or software?
    Richard

What happens if you let LR sit for a few moments and let the previews build after the Import.  Do the previews look ok?
If you import the images, again, perhaps to a new catalog, are the same images bad or is it different ones?

  • Long Capture unsupported format damaged file

Im capturing long videos and from time to time, when i hit the stop button for end the capture proccess, i dont get the window asking for the final filename. The main capture window stays still some time and then it shows itself as ready to capture again as if i putted the filename. The thing is the file is created, but when i try to import it it says damaged or unsupported format. Some other times (the most) this filename window does apperar and when i define the name and hit ok, i can see in Finder that the file that was beeing created generates a thumb, that de "corrupt" file doesnt ever get to generate because i think its not "closed", but i dont understand the inner proccess so its just a guess.
So the thing is, is there a way to fix this file? its 2hr capturing and its not the first time it happens, so id be very grateful if you can help me.
    Thanks in advance

Did you ever find a solution to this?  I'm having the same issue and really need to try and repair my files.  I captured 2 files each over 200 GB in HD 720p, jpg, mov file using an ultrastudio mini recorder via thunderbolt on a mac.  The capture went perfect until the end.  On one the box to name the file never appeared.  On the other I named the file.  But both cannot be opened by Adobe Premiere, Qucktime, VLC, or any other program I've tried.  The shorter test clips I did beforehand worked fine.  Any thoughts?  Did you get this figured out?

    Hi SkyeRyder,
These files are MOV format from a Apple Pro-rez 422.  I have a pc. Any ideas on how to fix this? The files work fine in Quicktime.
    Sorry to hear that.
What you might try is deactivating Premiere Pro, then reactivating it: Features and Sequence Presets missing | Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, CC, CC 2014
If that does not help, try moving the .mov files to a new folder and then import.
Also, always import files via the Media Browser, not File > Import

  • Unsupported or damaged file

    Hello Everyone
I have searched the forum endlessly and have found my particular problem - I have media that originated on jvc (MP4 format) sdhc class 6 card.
I copied it onto my desk top (xp) in a seperate named folder - I even have already placed it on a timeline in a project. I had to move all of my files to a EXT hard drive a few weeks back and when i moved it back it will not import - ALL other media links fine - ALSO the video plays fine in my VLC player .
    Can anyone Assist?
    Cheers Dean O

    Dean,
    Welcome to the forum.
Now the questions begin, before I move on:
Can you Import other MPEG material, and not just MP4 (H.264)?
Do you have a full compliment of HD Sequence Presets?
Do you have MPEG Export Presets?
Do you have the full-paid version, or the trial?
Where I am going with these questions is that sometimes, when one updates PrPro (as of CS4, but also with later CS5 updates), the full-paid version of the program will revert to trial. This happens for some yet unknown reason, but luckily to very few. Unfortunately, you might be one of those few.
If you do now have the trial, here is the workflow:
    Deactivate, if possible (probably not)
    Uninstall PrPro
Download and run Adobe Cleaner CS5 (yes, I know that you do not have CS5, but that is the newest one). Do this several times, rebooting between each.
Install PrPro, and immediately update to the very latest, before you launch the program
    Launch and test.
    All should be good now.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • AVI file won`t open - unsupported or damaged

I am using Premiere CS5, and did an edit about 5 days ago with .avi files recorded with FRAPS - screen recorder, everything was fine...
When I open that project now, it asks me to find the file because I changed my HDD letter, and when I find it, it says "Unsupported or damaged file"
    I don`t know why?
How it worked few days ago?
The same is happening when I try to import that in new project...
The files has just been on hard drive, and I haven˙t touched them...
I can play them only with VLC...
I tried Digital Video Repair, and show like it fixed the file, but I still can`t open it up..
How can it be that the file damages itself?

    Yep... seen it before
Download VLC Media Player and install it.
In the folder containing your AVI files, create a new text document called "avi2mp4.bat" (without the quote marks). Be sure it has the .BAT extension.
Paste the following into the batch file:
    @ECHO OFF
    for %%a in (*.avi) do "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc" -I dummy "%%a" --sout=#:file{dst="%%~na".mp4} vlc://quit
If VLC is installed in the Program Files folder and not the Program Files (x86) folder, remove the " (x86)" from this line, and save the file.
To run the batch, simply double-click it, or you can drag and drop AVI files onto it, and they will be rewrapped as MP4s with the same filename as the original. If you use the drag and drop approach, you can save this file anywhere on your hard drive, and any files dropped onto it will be converted and placed in the same folder as the original.
That's it; the MP4s will (should, anyway) import into Premiere without any further workarounds.

  • Export in Premiere Pro 5.5 gives corrupted mp4 files when merging

    Hi everybody,
This is my first post on the forum although I have been following different threads for a while now..
I have an issue with the export of a project on Premiere Pro. It's a 48-min sequence: I have already exported H264 versions of the same project but it's the first time it happens to me. Basically, it's a film that I have made in French and English. I am screening both of them on big screens in a theater and I wanted to have the best quality possible.
I exported the English version with a huge target bitrate, and got a 13Gb file of great quality. Here is a screenshot of my export settings:
    http://i.imgur.com/BRlFVUx.png
    http://i.imgur.com/5kFKCyI.png
(this is a different project but the same settings)
When I try to export the French version (that only differs from the English one by a track of subtitles that is NOT in this one (it's shot with French actors)): it doesn't work! What happens is that the export lasts 8 hours and works completely fine. I can see temporary files around the end of the export: they are like 12.8Gb for the video and a few Mb for the audio called "5862_2326_1664.m4v" and "5862_2326_1664.aac". But when it merges into one single mp4, it's always a reduced 4Gb or 6Gb file.. Even worse: when I try to play it, it says "Unsupported or damaged file"!
I don't understand why this happened: The thing is that I already exported the exact same sequence many times with a lower bitrate  and it worked fine. I got 4Gb files (bitrate of 10Mbs)... Now, I have tried exporting with the same parameters 3 times: once to see if something had happened the first time but to no avail. The third time, I tried changing a few parameters in the export settings and still nothing...
It's all the more inconvenient that it takes 8 hours every time and I need the file by next Wednesday It also blocks towards the end (when it's 98 or 99%) and says something like 213466153 hours remaining but then completes.
Hope we can find a solution! Let me know if you need more details.
    Thanks,
    Aziz

I don't know if this will help, but I would recommend using 1920 x 1080 with Square Pixels.

  • "The files appears to be unsupported or damaged" - I can't open the files in any software

I have just returned from a trip where i was on the road for 7 weeks and out of 5000 shots have 30 corrupted DNG files, one of which i would love to save please can you help? My work flow:
Shoot DNG files using Leica M9
Take SD card out sporadically and using SD card reader mount on Macbook air (very old) v1
Open Lightroom 4 on macbook air import to HD
Drag and drop in Lightroom on to external HD
Realised pretty soon some thing was not right with images but continued work flow with out problems with any other import
On returning home i imported project into a new LR5 project on my 15'' Macbook pro running OsX10.8.5, processor 2Ghz intel i7 with 8gb ram
IN LR 5.5(just updated) on my Macbook pro & Macbook air LR4 I can see the preview of the corrupted images in library mode but when go to Develop i get the "The files appears to be unsupported or damaged". In Photoshop CS5 i get "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognise this type of file"
The corrupt files are the same size 36.4MB as the non corrupt images suggesting the info is there. Is there software anyone can suggest that will open the file with the corruption so i can some how fix in photoshop? The SD card was one of many used and was over written many times after so i can not retrieve the images that way i'm afraid.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and i can forward you a copy of the file if you have the time.

Realised pretty soon some thing was not right with images but continued work flow with out problems with any other import
    Exactly what was not right?
Most likely a hardware problem causing corruption in the transfer of files from SD card to your computer. It could be the SD card itself, card reader, hard disk or memory.
    Side issue:
Open Lightroom 4 on macbook air import to HD
Drag and drop in Lightroom on to external HD
why don't you save yourself a step and import directly to the external HD (and thus also produce one less place where file corruption can happen)?

  • The file appears to unsupported or damaged - not opening in LR5, Photoshop CS5 or any other software

I've just returned from traveling round asia and found a fair few images show 'The file appears to unsupported or damaged' error message, I can see the preview but can not develop, this is in LR5
After shooting on the road I took the SD card and imported the images straight from the SD card to the HD on my macbook air ver1 through LR4. I then moved the files to an external drive through LR4.
Now I've returned I'm now using my Macbook pro 15'' and LR5 and these files aren't opening, they didnt open on the Macbook air either.
There are possibly 30 files and they all come from one import so i'm guessing they all corrupted on import.
Is there any software i can use that will open these files and allow me to rescue them?
Your help would be greatly appreciated as one of the files looks like one of the best i took during the entire 6 week trip.

Where are the photos located? Can you physically locate them and see that they are full sized?

  • "File Import Failure Unsupported format or damaged file" in CS6 but fine in CS5.5

    Hello All.
Recording in Pal DV AVI from Sony Z5U with MRC1K compact flash recorder.
Imported files to computer using the Sony utility, and also tried dragging and dropping.
Some files import to Premiere Pro CS6.03, but others give "File Import Failure: Unsupported format or damaged file,".
The files that do import show up as 4:3 and I have to modify /  interpret footage to get them to show as 16:9,
However, these same files play back just fine in Windows Media Player.
Intriguingly these files import just fine to Premiere Pro CS5.5, and also show up correctly as 16:9.
I can't figure out why some files import into CS6 and others don't....
Anyone else seen this kind of behavior?
(Normally I record in HDV and I've never had problems importing from MRC1K into Premiere, but the client specifically requested DV files for their ease of editing...)
    Cheers
    Mark
PS When I use the DV recoverer utility on these files they import just fine into CS6....

    Hi Jim,
OK, here's the video that imports OK into CS6.03 but that Premiere CS6.03 sees as 4:3:
And here's the one that won't import into CS6.03 but is happily opened by CS5.5 and correctly seen as 16:9:
Can you spot the difference? Thanks for having a look at this.
    Cheers
    Mark
