Premature Ejection

The DVD spits out of my MacBook Pro while on the screen it is still multiplexing and burning and the blue progress bar is still active as if the DVD has popped out without the machine noticing. The ejected DVD will either be unreadable or suffer severe damage or loss of data and lots of 'Skipping over damaged area'.
What is causing this premature ejection?
I have had my machine over 2 years now and problems with i-DVD/Movie are becoming more and more frequent and I can't run my business without it. The problem only seems to happen with long burns, a 5-15 minute movie will usually be alright but I tend to get it on hour long projects such as weddings with scene selections and deleted scenes.
Help greatly appreciated.

Okay, just got back from the iStudio and after about an hour we got to the bottom of the Menu duration exceeding 15 minutes thing which was down to the default moving clips in the scene selections pages.
The problem with the premature ejection is simply that my hardware, i.e. the DVD burner, is knackered - and after more than 2 years and with lots of usage this is no surprise. So I have the choice of buying an external burner like the ones for the MacBook Air or getting the internal replaced which is what i'll do. Not exactly cheap but definitely worth it as it will solve the burning issue all over - (I also can't copy DVD's in Toast) - and one thing that was suggested in the meantime is that for now I burn my DVD at the minimum speed, not the maximum.
I tried this using a nice, brand new Phillips blank DVD and it burned for a couple of hours then spat it out saying 'done' on the screen AND 50 minutes remaining. The DVD had a little ring of burn on its reverse side, the same width as a 10 min movie but when inserted back into the MacBook Pro absolutely nothing happened and it was eventually spat out after five minutes.
So, not all bad news but not all good - I suppose that the worst thing is that my friend Will in China will not be able to show his parents his wedding day before they fly back to England.

  • Premature ejection (idvd but not limited to)

I've developed the exact same problem on two older Macs that I've seen discussed here before.  None of the suggestions are helpful and seem to be missing the cause.  In iDVD the DVD will eject itself before the burn process.  If I try to create an image disc and burn it, I will get a message saying something about calibrating the right power level.  This happened at the same time on my 15" (1st gen macbook pro intel dual 2.1) macbookpro and my quad core MacPro.  Oddly I can burn CD with no problem.
As I mentioned I've seen this discussion several time with a lot of suggestions that miss the mark.  Here are some of the suggested remedies that aren't helpful.
    1  Bad media
    2  Low available disc space
    3  Dirty drives
I suspect that there's some kind of conflict with a recent OS update and my current OS.
Help?  Out of 3  Mac's (only my late model 13" macbook pro will successfully burn a DVD) and 4 Super drive only 1 will burn a DVD...

It may be incompatible DVD media.
    Or a bad DVD drive.
Since you have 3 macs that cannot burn DVDs, I suppose the same error, this likely would point towards incompatible media.

  • IDVD ejects disc during burning process of Dual Layer DVD

    Hi,
I am trying to burn a 3hr iMovie project of a recent holiday trip. Due to its size, it therefore needs to go on a Dual Disc DVD. I intend to burn 8 copies, one for each member of the holiday.
I successfully burned the first disc in iDVD, however since then, the disc prematurely ejects at the "Multiplexing and Burning" stage, (At the 'Writing Lead In' stage within this) ,usually with 31mins remaining
I am burning at 4x , I have 27GB free space and I am using AONE Plus DVDs. I have read many discussions on here about buying Verbatim DVD-R's which i can do, but with the first dvd burning successfully, I would prefer to try other options before I commit to purchase..
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me

    Hi again,
I purchased a pack of Verbatim DVD-R DL Discs, tried the iDVD route and it ejected at the burning and multiplexing stage again. Not only this, but after burning and trying that same failed disc again, it actually contains part of the project, so this disc is now unusable.
After this I went the Disc Utility option as you advised and successfully got to the end until the 'closing session' section. Here, it continues to load and says it is 'closing the session' and i can hear my Disc drive spinning away, stopping, then starting to spin again (this continues to happen forever and ever)
Any suggestions at this stage would be great as i'm truly at a lost cause now..
    Thanks

  • Share the knowledge

I too have gotten a window titled "Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device" with the statement "Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again
    later."
What I do not understand is this.  The OS does not suspect and is not guessing (one would hope!) that a program or window or file might still be using the device--no, it definitely knows a specific program or window or file is in fact still using the
device; or it is confused--i.e. a badly written OS--and delusionally thinks a program or window or file is still using the device.  Either way: great.  Why doesn't the OS share its knowledge with the user?  Why doesn't it just tell us which
specific program or window or file it thinks is using the device (e.g. offer us another window with a list of those programs or windows or files)?  How is the statement in that window at all helpful?  Who would design an OS that alerts a user about
a specific cause which the OS knows is the source of a specific problem it is having but which does not tell the user what that known and specific cause is?
Similar issues happen all the time in Windows. (This issue may not be relevant in this forum but I bring it up to demonstrate the above is not an isolated situation.)  A similar issue is with long file names.  When deleting a folder Windows will
sometimes alert the user that the folder contains filenames (and/or paths) which are too long, etc. but it does not give the user a list of the specific files which are causing that problem.  But it must know specifically which files they are--otherwise
it would not have been able to generate the alert window.
These and other problems cannot be hardware problems; they are not vendor problems; they are Windows problems.  The programmers simply did not think through the consequences of what they were doing.  They were smart enough to make sure the OS stopped
a device from being prematurely ejected because a program or window was still open but not smart enough to realize that was only half the task and that the user needs to also know what specific program or window is causing the problem too.  A user shouldn't
need third party software to fix an OS's shortcomings.  That too would be a shortcoming.

    Hi,
This issue is not caused by Windows, but 3rd part process.
You can use Microsoft tool Handle to check such issue:
Handle is a utility that displays information about open handles for any process in the system. You can use it to see the programs that have a file open, or to see the object
types and names of all the handles of a program.
    Copy handle.exe to C:\Windows\system32 folder.
    Run cmd.exe as administrator
Type handle -a C: /Test/test in command prompt, then it will list all handles and processes accessing this folder.
It shows that cmd.exe is accessing c:\Test\test. Then, we can use handle –c command to close the handles, along with
the handle ID, and the process ID, and the "-y" switch to confirm the delete.

  • IPhoto 11 v9.4.2 not reading JPGs from camera and crashing

it reads the first 3 or 4 then stops dead in its tracks. when i hit 'stop' it says the device has been prematurely ejected! then the circle just goes round and round and nothing loads then it comes up with 'can't read this type of file' - and they are all JPGs!

It sounds to me like there is faulty hardware here - the cable or the USB port on the camera or the Mac. If the link to the camera is being broken during import then it's likely that the database has been damaged.
First off, try and track down that hardware issue. If not you will continue to have the problem.
To try and fix the Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • 'PLAY MOVIE' - Starts halfway through movie! -  Please help - urgent!

My 'Prematur Ejection' issue was solved by buying an external DVD burner but I have a new problem. I have created a lovely 30 minute movie of a dinner party for a customer that has to be delivered tomorrow.
I am very pleased with the results with one exception.
When the 'PLAY MOVIE' button is pressed it takes you straight to scene 5, so the only way to view the movie from the beginning is to go to hit the Scene Selection button.
I have only a few hours to rectify this and burn again, I have since noticed that it does the same thing when the i-DVD project is opened up and tested but I don't know how to fix it.
I hope somebody out there can help me, many thanks in advance.

Possibly your iDVD or iMovie preferences have been corrupted. That happens sometimes. It is easily corrected. To do that, close iDVD and iMovie and trash the files com.apple.iDVD.plist and com.apple.iMovie.plist found in User (the house icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. Then relaunch iDVD and iMovie. Those programs will create new .plist files to replace the ones you deleted.
If that doesn't cure the problem, you probably will need to go back to your iMovie project and reset your chapter markers, then reimport your movie into iDVD.
    Good luck with this.

  • Digital/analog converter recommendations?

I own a DataVideo digital converter that I have had for a couple years but recently it has been giving me problems. It tends to go in and out giving me the video then a pink screen. And when it starts "flashing" like that my FCP will start stoping and starting during playback. And three times in the past week it seems to be the cause of my "ejected" Seagate drive that holds my media files. I will suddenly get the "premature ejection" sign.
So, my guess is it is going out on me and before it causes something horrendous, I want to get a new/better one. Any reccomendations?

If you ever do VHS, Hi8 or other SD to DV conversions, the Canopus ADVC300 does a very good job of cleaning up the image.

  • Ok, this is just a little weird - would like some comments/help please

Ok, I've had some of the same problems with my imac system and the premature ejecting of my external drives (for whatever reason), and I managed to solve that by setting up the system to put them in "Sleep Mode" when possible. Now however, just this morning, I received the same message along the lines of "A disk has been ejected improperly" yada, yada, yada. The drives were no longer visible on the Desktop and at that time I was busy doing something else, so I put OFF going through the normal unplugging of the firewire cable....etc., then I went on with my business at hand, and within 5 mins, I hear the drives power up and low and behold, the icons reappear on my desktop and everything is fine, and this is without me doing anything. So I'm just wondering that if my original problem, and possibly others' original problem, stemmed from something within OS X? Comments and/or suggestions as to what this may be, what may be causing it, how I can stop it, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the reply...however, I had no problems with these drives AT ALL until the 2nd to the most recent update to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. As mentioned in one of my posts here on this thread, I've had this iMac for about 4 years now (the drives I've had longer) and have used these same drives with this same Mac for all of those years, and I've had no problems at all until such time as described above...so I'm not sure what to think about the problem that has developed except that there has maybe been a change in OS X on the way things are handled with external drives. At least this is the way it looks to me now, I'm not trying to state it as FACT, just my observations over the last 4 years has led me to think this way.

  • Anamorphic footage distorted after multiclip cut

This question has been posted a few times but no answers yet.
I'm editing a multiclip of 2 cameras, both anamorphic footage. I put the multiclip in an anamorphic sequence. At first everything is fine.
BUT once I make a cut to my 2nd camera, that 2nd cam's "distort" attribute changes from 0 to 33.33 EVERY TIME. No biggie, I can remove that attribute but it's getting annoying! It's only the 2nd cam ... if I cut back to the first cam, it remains undistorted.
The "anamorphic" column in Item Properties is check for both cams & multiclip ... even the distorted cam. So any other ideas???

I JUST had this issue happen to me. Unfortunately my eSATA expresscard prematurely ejected causing my scratch drive to go offline. Upon reconnecting the media, it told me that some files out points were off and needed to be adjusted, or something like that. My multiclip continued through the end, but I immediately noticed that my previously 16:9 footage was now 4:3 within a 16:9 frame. After checking to make sure they were Checked anamorphic, I opened the files in the Finder, which were still anamorphic. The solution was what was listed above, Remove Attributes->Distort. Somehow a distort was added to my clips. Selecting all and removing cleared a hassle that could've taken infinitely longer to fix but also just to diagnose. This isn't as much an answer to your problem but as help for anyone else having this problem with multiclips and not being anamorphic.

  • LR4.3 is randomly destroying my 5DMkIII raw images - why?

Has anyone esle experienced this problem?
I recently acquired the 5DMkIII and after I import the RAW images into LR 4.3RC, LR will, apparently randomly, divide an image into rectangles and color it with psychodelic colors.  Out of about 700 images from my last shoot, it has only happened to 3 or 4, so far.  But it can happen immediately upon import or on a subsequent viewing/developing of the images.  It seems to happen at the time I click on the thumbnail to view or edit the image.
I have inserted a sample.  This is an image of a hawk on a post (the bird is in the center of the image).  Theoretically, I can reimport the image from the CF card and hope it doesn't happen again (assuming I haven't reformated the card).  Is this an issue with the camera or LR?  It began happening on the Mark III images.  I've used 7D, 40D, and XT before this with no problem.   I would really appreciate any input on what is happening here.  Thanks for any help!   Dennis

    Hi Dennis,
Thanks - I guess we'll all know for sure in a week or so if it was the camera, as you've (probably correctly) concluded.
    UPDATE:
Dennis, consider changing the "Correct" answer - I think it is *very* misleading.
And for the record, I agree with Jeff Schewe in the case of proprietary raws: it would take a highly unlikely bug for Lr to be the cause of raw file corruption, since when there are no such bugs (and so far, there never has been such a bug, or at least not that we know of) Lightroom never writes to these files (other than the first time I mean, when copying from source, and assuming user has not ventured to update capture time in raw file).
However, the same is not true of DNGs and other RGB formats, since they are being written and re-written, by Lightroom, over and over again, much more frequently if you have auto-write xmp enabled.
Wanna corrupt a DNG? - It's easy: just select a bunch and choose "Update DNG Preview and Metadata", then promptly unplug your drive - voila: ruined DNG (you may have to do it a few times since it depends on timing - you have to hit one of the windows of vulnerability). And should such a problem occur, due to power loss, bug, bad media, premature ejection..., when would you be notified of such a problem? - Answer: as soon as you try and re-render for export or develop or such, otherwise maybe never. - indeed: worth considering a bit of Lr robustening here...
PS - It is for these reasons, and a myriad of other reasons, that I would *REALLY* like to have the option to save metadata in sidecar files, for all file types, including virtual copies. It is also for these reasons, and a myriad of other reasons, that I recommend leaving auto-write xmp disabled* (it is disabled by default), unless you only edit proprietary raw formats, or you don't understand that xmp needs to be saved manually if auto-save is disabled, or you just really value the convenience despite the potential for problems. (Note: you can always fetch from backup, provided you know you've had a problem, and don't overwrite a good backup with corrupt file before you figure that out - a good reason to *always* keep original raw even if converted to dng)... In any case, if you do edit rgb files or dng, and you have auto-write xmp enabled, I recommend also having a UPS (uninterruptible power supply I mean, not the package delivery service - silly).
PPS - *Way more people have lost edits by having auto-write xmp disabled (lots) than have ever lost original masters by having it enabled (very few, but more than zero), however *nobody* has ever lost an original master by having it disabled (that I know of).
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Ipod battery mistake

I just received an ipod and i connected it to my mac and as it was charging loaded a video onto it to see how good the playback was (i was giddy).
after loading the video on the ipod i ejected the ipod before it was fully charged forgetting the the rule: to get the best battery life charge it all the way before disconnecting it.
maybe i have the rule wrong....but
in prematurely ejecting the ipod before it fully charged have i screwed up the potential of my ipod's battery life?

  • Ejects prematurely

After I finish using FCE4 to make my movie from AVCHD clips on my camcorder, I then use iDVD to burn it. I have made many like this but for some reason on this quick time movie I made, iDVD when it gets down to less than a couple of minutes left to burn ejects the disk as if it is complete. When I put the DVD in my PS3 it works fine but when I put it in my iMac, the iMac says I have put in a blank disk. Can anyone explain this?

How strange is that? (nevertheless I do believe it)
But I tell you what .... We have to narrow this down to either iDvd or your S-Drive /Media so let's start simple.
Have you tried burning your iDvd project file to a disc image from the file menu within iDvd? Now use apple's dvd player to test for proper playback. Assuming it plays exactly as expected then burn to Verbatim Dvd-R at 4x.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1583?viewlocale=en_US
Btw, what dvd brand did you use that works fine in PS3 but not in your mac?

  • UserEventAgent preventing external hard drive from being ejected?

I'm trying to eject an external hard drive (not used with Time Machine) but keep getting the "can't eject because one or more programs is using the drive" and asks me if I'd like to force eject.
I've quit every application, emptied the trash, restarted, verified/repaired the disk, made sure it wasn't indexing in Spotlight (there was no progress bar so I'm assuming it's not), relaunched Finder/TotalFinder, no luck. Attempting to repair or erase the drive results in an error because os x can't unmount the disk.
I ran this terminal code after a google search of this problem and this is the result:
    unknown60334b106529:~ will$ lsof +fg +D /Volumes/"Toshiba External" | grep -v EVO

Any ideas? I don't know if this is a premature sign of the drive failing and luckily I was able to back up all my files to a different drive, but I'm stumped.

I just tried it with my mac mini, same problem as above. However, when I tried it with my iMac, I was able to eject it without any issue. Weird...

  • Any CD or DVD i put in keeps getting ejected

I cant figure out what to do for this problem. I can't even use my Mac OS install disc 1 because that gets ejected too. Up to 10 seconds after putting in a disc it gets kicked back out. I hope theres an easy solution. I hope someone can help.

I didn't save the message. But basically what you do if your experiencing this problem go to your applications go to utilities click disk utilities and click on your HD in left hand corner and run a verify permissions and repair test. Hopefully this will eradicate the problem of your ejecting disk. After running a repair test turn off your computer start it up again then pop in a disk and see if it runs without ejecting prematurely.

  • DVD will not eject

A DVD in the slot-loading drive will not eject. My iBook reads the disk as it appears on my desktop and I can play the DVD. But as soon as I hit the eject key (F12), it makes a weird sound, like it's trying to eject, but the DVD will not eject. Can some one tell me what I can do? I have tried all the normal procedures, like holding the track pad while starting up, doing the Firmware thing at start-up, etc... All I get is the weird spinning sound, but no disk ejected. Please some one tell me what I need to do. Thank you in advance!

When open firmware doesn't work, it sounds like a hardware problem with the ejector. I would take the machine into service and let them know you tried the open firmware method.
In the future be sure to follow this link as far as the allowed optical media on slot loading drives:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
And note that disks which have been written on by sharpie or other type of pen, or a sticky applied to them can cause the drive to age prematurely. Always buy media in jewelcases by known reliable vendors. For CD that's Verbatim, Kodak, Imation, and Sony. For DVD check http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/
