Premature halting of tape import

Hi:
I'm importing old Hi-8 movies into i-Movie 9 using a Canopus ADVC-300. In general, this works well with one annoyance. A lot of my old tapes have inter scene bursts of static or "grey noise" where the camera was either turned off or the tape was removed. i-Movie interprets these as the end of the tape and stops importing. The Camera, of course, knows nothing about this and merrily plays through to the end which leaves me to rewind back to the spot that it stopped and start importing again. This means that I have to babysit all of my tapes.
Earlier work using i-Movie 06 did not do this.
Does anyone know how to turn this feature off?

I had exactly the same problem, using the same setup. After talking to several professionals, the consensus I got is that it's a software issue that cannot be adjusted in iTunes. Earlier versions were not so sensitive, but the recent ones do this. It's worse with old tapes. I finally had to take my tapes to a duplication house that copied them onto miniDV (the camera I have now). This allowed me to import them easily, and was cheaper than having the house convert them to iMovie files--they were going to have to do the same babysitting that you are doing. Sorry--if anyone has better info I'd like to hear it, but I wrangled with this problem for several months.

DV tape import trouble

I am currently archiving quite a big amount of SD DV footage in FCPX. I'm using a pretty old consumer DV camcorder as a source, connected via FireWire 400.
My workflow is to archive every whole tape to disk as quickly as possible and use the archive files as a source later on, since the camcorder will soon be retired.
Sometimes, however, archiving fails with the following behavior:
Tape is inserted
Clicking "Archive..." button in FCPX import window, entering name and clicking OK.
Camcorder neither rewinds nor starts capturing, but "archiving..." message appears with timecode counting.
I press "play" on the camcorder manually, now it really seems to be archiving something. "archiving" message with time indicator counting in the top left of the capturing window, original timecode counting in the top right.
at the end of the tape (after an hour or so), FCPX rewinds the tape
after rewind, a couple of seconds of footage are captured
A message appears along the lines everything has been captured successfully.
Shockingly, when I open the captured archive package, there is only on clip with the first few frames of the tape in it. Everything else seems to be gone!
Sometimes, not even the archive package with the name I entered exists. Sometimes, I look into the trash and there is an empty archive package with the name I entered.
According to FCPX documentation, archiving from DV tape should start at the current tape position and terminate automatically at the end of the tape. It never worked for me like this. Either FCPX rewinded the tape and captured from the start after I enterd the archive name, or the tape didn't move at all, and I had to start it manually. What can be wrong here?
Are there any settings to instruct FCPX to continue archiving on timecode breaks? It should be possible to automatically skip to the next valid timecode...

It's an imac super model with i7, dual video card, etc. so it's not a computer limitation. The camcorder is an older version of another one I have (both Sony), and the tapes (all Hi 8) made after 2000 imported into archives-no problem (not mini-DV, regular DV Hi 8). The tapes made prior to 1999 won't import from either camcorder-I've tried. The camcorders are both connected using Firewire 800 (main imac port). The cable is fine-since I have imported the Hi 8 DV's The newer Canon using mini-DV tapes imported with no problem.
So, I know I'm using the proper protocols. I turned off all the rendering options to simplify import to the lowest common denominator. In attempting to import into imovie as well I get the same message "NO DATA FROM DEVICE". The archive mode does rewind the tape, plays the tape, and the monitor shows the images. However, nothing is being recorded. The arcives are automically dumped into the trash after import is complete. Regardless, I can't import into an "event" either-the same message appears.
Any help welcome.

Tape Import and transcode to proxy

I've been working with the tape import from an HDV tape and camera. My preferences are set to auto transcode to proxy on import, but when FCPX captures a tape to the archive, I import that archive into an event. The footage now shows up as offline until I manually right click on the file and click transcode and select proxy file. Anyone else having this issue or am I not doing it right. I was thinking it should automatically transcode it.

I'd leave the Project and files set to ProRes.
Turn off background rendering as most newish computers should keep up. No real need to render even before export time.
When it comes Export time:
You can choose ProRes LT in the export options which is quit adequate for a DVD.
Use that export to author in the DVD software.

Help - HDV tape import problem - Sony HC-3 broken - Questions/Warning

My Sony HC-3 HD camcorder has just failed. I've had it just over 3 years.
I really don't enjoy video editing much, and despite maybe shooting 20-30 tapes of HD footage of my young children, I'd only got round to importing a handful over Firewire, but was lulled into a false sense of security perhaps by treating the tapes as my film negatives (new tape each time).
The camcorder behaved a bit erratically a few weeks ago when inserting a tape, then the other day it gave an error, I ejected the tape and had a constant C32:11 error flashing. Lots of user reports on the web, no idea what the real issue is, but any suggested fixes didn't work.
Essentially I cannot close the tape transport compartment with or without a tape - it won't accept a tape and return to record/play position.
Almost feels as though something isn't clicking/catching when you push the tape in.
Anyhow, I thought if worst comes to worst I'll just buy Sony's latest model - then the realisation they'd discontinued consumer HDV tape camcorders. Not a happy bunny.
I've sent camcorder to local Sony repair center and am awaiting outcome.
Now my questions are:
1 - Is there any way of simply reading the tape data using an SD camcorder if I ever needed to ? - There are programs that use them to archive data so I guess in theory it must be possible just to read the data, unless it's stored in an SD compliant file format rather than just data.
2 - is 1080i HDV (1440x1080 res) as captured by the Sony HC3 a cross-vendor format or Sony specific - (if 1 is impossible) could I if needed say pick up a Canon HDV camcorder and use that to import my video?
3 - are we to assume now that DV/HDV is dead as a consumer format despite it's better image quality compared to hard drive/memory card video codecs.
Hopefully Sony will repair my camcorder for a fixed rate charge - if they can't or won't what are my options for importing the video I've got on tape?
There are bound to be companies who'll do this for a fee if worst comes to worst, but I feel a bit annoyed with Sony for dropping support for the format after buying an expensive camcorder only a few years ago.
Even if it can be repaired, I'm not sure I'll want to continue using it if there's a risk of future failure and inability to import old tapes. Frankly I'm glad I've used the video function on my Canon 5D II a lot in the last year or so for quick video clips even if many are transiently OOF.
Yes, my fault for not importing the tapes immediately after shooting, but I'd assumed that I would be able to import the data well into the future evene if it meant a new device.

1. No, you can't read it with an SD camera. you are correct that it is just 12GB of data, but no software really knows how to go back and forth, so to speak. In case you care, there was an app years ago (I forget which) that could use a Dv camera as a 12GB backup drive. But practically, no.
Shame really seeing as it's just data - I'd used the Firewire SDK kit DVHSCap app to pull off 12-13GB m2ts files in the past which I felt would be ok for computer archival, unedited direct playback on PS3 and fairly quick to convert to AIC as needed for future editing purposes using a utility.
I did wonder if DVHSCap might be able to pull the data from an SD camcorder, but maybe the tape just would not play.
2. HDV is HDV. If you had problems, pros would advise you to import with the same camera, or at least same brand. But, usually there are no problems. There shouldn't be, but occasionally there are.

3. Image quality is NOT better with hard drive based camcorders. In fact, most use a higher rate of compression than HDV. What is the advantage? A tape-based camera takes an hour to import and hour. Hard drive cams go faster. Some look great, but there is no advantage over HDV.
Yes, the only advantage of HD/card based camcorders is simpler import faster than real time, and I'd always been concerned with HD camcorders you'd have too many eggs in one basket if the HD failed in between imports to computer.
I own an HC-3, and you have to realize it was an early camera in the high-def market. I don't use it often (except as a secondary) because of its optics.
I've always found it produced pretty acceptable results - constantly amazed that 3-4 year old products get regarded as obsolete by manufacturers who just want you to buy the latest gadget.
Here is my advice:
Get a Canon HDV camera. Use it to import your tapes, and enjoy its superior optics and color quality. Opinion? Yes, but I believe it.
I may consider that if repair fails - any model recommendations that would trounce the Sony?

HELP - VHS Tape Import via Canopus ADVC110 creating giant file size?

HELP. When I import video from a VCR tape via a Canopus ADV110 the file size is massive. A 9 minute clip is 15GB? This makes burning even a short project impossible. What am I doing wrong? I have preferences set to NTSC 29fps. It must be some kind of high resolution setting?
Please help.

Wounder what kind of project You started ? (HD ?)
Mac OS ?, iMovie 5.0.2 ?? and QT ???
I would:
- start a new account so that iMovie will make new pref files
- start a normal DV project in iMovie (NTSC if You like)
- only work on the internal hard disk (no ext. PC-formatted device)
What will 9 min end up as ?

VHS Tape import issue

I'm running an iMac 7.1/2.8 ghz with Final Cut Studio. Importing a VHS source through a Canopus 110 via RCA cables. A/V settings are DV NTSC 48khz and non-controllable device. The problem happens when I try to import SLP speed VHS tape. The picture and sound break up in a regular interval, about 2 seconds between hits. The breakup is not like a tracking error - it's more like the source seems to loose control track, the picture and sound scramble for 1 second and then it plays correctly for two seconds or so until the next break. It's very rythmic. That same tape plays OK when just running out of the VCR to a monitor. SP VHS tapes work fine...it's just this batch of SLP recorded stock.
Any ideas? And thanks reading the lengthy description!

If it's rhythmic, it's likely edge damage on the tape. A regular ol' TV set will not react fast enough to such glitches but the conversion to DV cannot fill in the missing pieces. Possibly.
If you won't purchase or cannot borrow a TBC, you have only one option, dub the tape directly to DV tape and capture the DV.
Borrow another VHS deck to see if it's your deck causing these problems.

DV tape imported as one long clip

I am importing all my DV tapes via my Sony DV camera to archive them. Most tapes are being split into clips correctly (with correct dates) but some tapes are imported as one long clip with the current date. Why are they one long clip and why is the date the current date (I assume these issues are related)?

Not sure this is related but I had the same problem when I was importing from my Sony HDRSR5 hard drive camera.
Went back and re-imported and it worked fine.
Then on my Sony HVR-A1 I had one event split into 2 different dates.
Never had a problem with iM6
I wonder if it has to do with how slow the input feed is.
I noticed on this tape the feed lagged by several minutes.

DV Tape imported with jumps

I have had this problems a couple of times. When the tape is imported it is jumpy and skippy. Is there anyway I can fix this problem? Is it more likely to be a problem with the tape itself?

If it always does it in the same place, check the tape by playing it back on the camcorder. If it is a different place, try a Mini DV head cleaner through the camcorder until the picture cleans up. If not, then try turning off all other apps in the background, ie, anti virus, energy saver, screensaver, avoid using expose & dashboard, etc.

Dv tape import

I have a Panasonic PV-GS320 that I need to import the miniDV tape into FCPX. It keeps dropping the same frames each time. I have gotten all frames imported using Adobe Premier Elements trial version so I don't think it is a tape issue. I have read lots of suggestions and tired capturing uncontrolled, with control, etc. I have tried capturing just the parts that dropped and still it dropped. Any ideas? Tim

Which PC program imports at faster than real-time?
There is no way to do that with iMovie.
BTW-
Depending on your system, 90 minutes is a lot of footage to import and work with. If you are eliminating a significant amount of that footage in editing, you might consider not importing all of it.
Also, iMovie captured footage is not technically sharable without duplicating the footage and thus doubling the drive space it takes up.
If you plan on creating smaller projects, import only what you need for that particular movie. All that footage could prove troublesome to deal with down the line.
Just a few helpful hints!

Imovie 11 timecode issue DV tape import

Hi all,
I am having an issue with importing a DV tape of my Sony Recorder, as it skips several scenes. I have been investigating and it seems I have Timecode issue with the DV tape, It states in several forums that I have to deselect the option to "import as individual clips". However I am unable to locate this option . Can anybody help my out or give me another solution of how to solve the issue of skiping several scenes while importing?

In iMovie 1 to HD6 - this can be selected in iMovie Pref (Settings)
in iMovie'08 to 11 - I have not found it at all !
And if the final product is a DVD - then using iMovie HD6 - WILL RESULT in the BEST POSSIBLE DVD !
As it can (opposed to iMovie'08 to 11) deliver max quality over to iDVD - and as DVDs are as standard Interlaced SD-Video - keeping this from the miniDV tape to the final DVD will Guarantee the best quality possible.
Alt. to get it in without time code
1. Use a miniDV Camera - analog out - A/D-box - FireWire in to Mac
or
2. Make a miniDV tape Copy. From Camera A - via FireWire - to Camera B - BUT TO GET THIS OK - the new tape must be DUMMY RECORDED - full tape out.
Just set one Camera to record it with just about anything (a wall or other not interesting) - and the full 62 minutes !
Then re-wind it and now record the copy onto it - THIS TO GET ONE UNBROKEN TIMECODE
This also needs a 4-pin to 4-pin FireWire Cable - BUT will give an unbroken miniDV tape Copy.
• USING A CLEANING miniDV tape - from time to time - is also a good strategy to keep broken timecodes to a minimum.
• SO ALSO - Recording the full tape before - Viewing (rewinding) it or even WORSE - unloading it (DON'T DO IT).
Some Cameras has a FIND END of Recording - to take up recording next sequence without any code breaks - Use it - My Cameras has it and one can do this to 100% if tape has not been unloaded. One perfectly the other I need to back a few frames - to get it to work.

Digital tape import failed

I have a digital tape sony camera, DCR-PC55.. I attached the camera to the Mac with FireWire. That worked. I could view the tape on the Mac in iMovie. So I used iMovie and chose import. The tape finished, 1 hour, then the import window closed, and nothing was there.
I Can't see what else I should have done. So how can I get this to work.

I use an OLD AGFA DUOSCAN T2500 (+ Power Mac G3 / SCSI-connected) - BUT THIS was nearly from the Neolitic-era ( > 10 Years)
So I would - if I must - take a look at Epson as they use to do good solution.
Or Reflecta™ - sort of old slide-projector - working as scanner in newer models
Or may be find my Bellow/lens to my old Minolta as my new SONY alpha7r can use these old lenses and just make snap-shoots of the slides. (THIS is a fast BUT very expensive solution and may be introduces other problems as.
- Strong contrast to be handled
- NO automated dust removal function - can be a very very tedious task to do manually.
OR to be plain - I really have no good suggestion - but any technical store (even Apple Store) should be able to suggest a solution in Your budget frame.

4x3 format SD tape import looks ok on monitor , but, the DVD produced does not display correctly ? The format looks slightly thinner in width?

I have been archiving old Hi- 8 SD tape and when displayed on the PC monitor looks right. And looks correct on a TV Monitor.
But, the DVD when produced looks right on a TV monitor but, thinner when imported back as a DVD into Adobe Premiere Pro , how can I adjust this ? I know a 1,000pixels instead of 720 would fix the issue, i have checked it in Photoshop.
I have others that need extra editing, as the previous Sequences have been removed from the computer ?

usually this is caused by pixel aspect ratio. premiere usually reads it properly, but if it doesn't you can change it to a new value. in the project bin, right click the file(s) and choose modify, interpret footage. there is an option for pixel aspect ratio, you can try some till one looks right. the 1.21 or 1.45 might do what you are looking for...

Premature end of tape?

still experimenting. attempted to capture some footage from my canon HV30 that i had shot before. twice got an end of tape message during the capture when only a minute or two into the tape. what could cause this?

If you turn the camera playback off whilst capturing, FCE thinks it has reached the end of the tape and gives you that message.
Are you sure nothing is causing the camera to stop playing back?
What Easy Setup are you using?

Sony DCR-TRV240, analog tapes & firewire import?

I'm importing home movies with a Sony DCR-TRV240 camcorder which plays 8mm, Hi8 and Digital 8 tapes. I'm connecting via firewire (or i.Link, as Sony calls it). The digital tapes import just fine, but the analog ones don't. They play just fine on the little screen on the camcorder, but nothing seems to come through the firewire cable.
Is there a fix for this?

A. You are sure that You use a FireWire Cable. Most often NOT Supplied with Camera.
Usually they are delivered with an USB/USB2 Cable. Will not work with iMovie 6.
B. Does Your Camera work with another Mac ?
C. Does another Camera work with Your Mac ?

It won't import all the tapes

I videoed an event using three Mini DV tapes (tapes I have used before). The first tape imported just fine--all normal. Tapes 2 and 3 will play in the camera and iMovie tells me "camera playing" but nothing will come over to iMovie! I have had this happen before but it spontaneously cured itself. I have over 30GB of space available, just as I did for the first tape.
I can't upgrade iMovie without getting a new computer. Do I have to re-install iMovie 4? Why will it do one and not the others? This is when computers drive me nuts!

Thank you for helping me again, Lennart. I opened Audio MIDI setup, and "internal microphone" setting was already 44100 Hz and wouldn't take a change. However, I did change it from "Internal" to "line in" and now it is importing. Do I have to change it back when I am through? and I wish someone could give me the reasoning behind it so I can work my way through these problems if they arise.
