PREMIER CS3 - Eyedropper Tool ONLY Sees BLUE

When I am Chroma or Colour Keying in Premier CS3 the eyedropper only sees BLUE, whereas last week it saw EVERYTHING that I would touch it to.
I was told to buy CS4 but that's not an option for me yet.
How do I get it to see the colours I am touching with it again?

My Replies will be in BOLD
Thanks for the info.
Now, some observations, followed by a few more questions:
My question - 1.) when you click the eyedropper, does the cursor change to the eyedropper symbol?
+++ The cursor changes to the EYEDROPPER as soon as I mouse-over the actual eyedropper icon. As soon as I click it, the colour in the box becomes an off blue-purple, and no matter what colour (with the exception of white) that I click on, the blue-purple colour remains as the selected colour. This does NOT happen in After Effects when I use chroma key there.
This is odd behavior. When working with the Chroma Key Effect (my example), I start with a color swatch and the Eyedropper button/icon. Hovering over it will do nothing, until I click on that button/icon. That is when the cursor changes to the Eyedropper symbol - not before I click. Something is odd here.
Could there be an Automatic/Options filter that is turned on that I don't know about?
My question - 3.) what are the other settings in the Chroma Key box in the Effects Control Panel?
+++In order the options in Chroma Key are:
Colour - has the colour box and eyedropper icon
Similarity
Blend
Threshold
Cutoff
Smoothing with an options drop down box
Mask Only with a check box.
My settings are:
Color with the swatch and Eyedropper button/icon
Similarity 0.0%
Blend 0.0%
Threshold 0.0%
Cutoff 0.0%
Smoothing None
Mask Only unchecked
Can you try those settings as a test? You can change them back after the test.
I have shot video of this for you, I will convert it and sent it off. Can you view MPEG 2 files?
You'd most likely know if you had a Matrox Video/Capture card. We can probably rule that one out.
You should not need to upgrade to CS4, unless some of its features would be worth it. I'm testing this with PrPro 2.0 on my laptop, so you should get almost everything that I do. You should also NOT need to go to Photoshop for this. Something is odd, as mentioned above.
I have no interest in moving to 4 (dollars and cents are an issue).
Now, most of these questions mainly come from my years with PS, and might have nothing to do with PrPro. Still, these were things that could mess up the Eyedropper in PS.
Do you have Cap Locks ON, or OFF?
Tried both
Do you have a MS InteliPoint mouse driver?
No, Logitech Mouse Here
Are you running Window Blinds?
No
What happens if you Ctrl-click on the Eyedropper button/icon?
The colour becomes about 1/3 the darkness it would normally be - but only sometimes
What happens if you Alt-click on the Eyedropper button/icon?
It detects grays only
What happens if you Shift-click on the Eyedropper button/icon?
It sees gray and white but wont change the blue colour
What is the exact version of CS3 that you're running. Tip: Help>About and look to the middle-left of the splash screen for some black text with something like CS3.0.2.
CS3.0.0 (374)

  • Eyedropper tool only creates black stroke on text.

Everytime I use the eyedropper tool on some text, instead of picking up the font, colour, and attributes of the text I dropper, it somehow just outlines my selection with a black stroke. This has been happening with any kind of text, in many different documents. I can't figure out why it suddenly started. Ideas?

  • Eyedropper tool wrong rgb color

I've placed an rgb image and on top of that a vector square which I wanna give the same color as the bright green one in the rgb image. So I used the eyedropper tool on that bright green color. But as you can see it give a more dull greenish color. The document is in rgb mode. I would expect this more when I was working in cmyk but I ain't. Why isn't the eyedropper tool picking the bright green color? The image is in rgb, illustrator is in rgb, in photoshop I can see the bright green color in the rgb image. So why isn't illustrator using this bright green color with it's eyedropper tool?
Edit: Turns out the eyedropper tool only works correctly (while illustrator is in rgb color mode and the image placed is also in rgb), when the image placed is embedded and not just linked. After I dragged the image on the page and go to Links to have the image embedded and then use the eyedropper tool, I get the exact same color. Seems a bit odd that it won't work the same way when the image is linked?

The eyedropper only works accuratelyon vector objects. Shift eyedropper is misleading as the color chanegs but never has been accurate on bitmaps in Illustrator. Shift eyedropper does not pick up the pixel value, but what is being sent to the monitor going through conversions for color mgmt, color modes, etc.  Open the image in photoshop and use the eyedropper set to 1 pixel.

  • Why does my iPhoto red eye reduction tool only give me blue or black blobs in the eyeballs that look completely unacceptable?

Why does my iPhoto red eye reduction tool only give me blue or black blobs in the eyeballs that look completely unacceptable? Automatic mode makes blue blobs that cover iris and even eyelid! Manual mode gives black dots, not at all hte shape of a oerson's iris as seen in a picture.

And again the answer is simply
THere is no fix - that is the way it works - you can post as many times as you want but it will not change the fact that that is the way that iPhoto works
    No fix
    No work around
It is what it is - nothing more - nothing less

  • CS3 Mac: eyedropper tool failure?

I'm having repeated but inconstant problems with using the
    eyedropper tool
to change background colors in CSS using the CSS panel in
    DWCS3. I will
click on a color on a dw page in development and I'll hear a
    beep and
although the color appears in the pop up color panel, the
    color doesn't
"take." As soon as I move the cursor off the current
    location, the color
starts changing in the color panel.
It is annoying and it happens sometimes. Sometimes I can even
    click on a
desktop color on a browser's page, for example and get the
    color. At other
times I cannot even click within the application on a page to
    get the color.
    Any ideas?

Oh for crying out loud -- I feel like such an idiot! :)
    It worked like a charm.
I have used Dreamweaver since MX, which is a number of years,
and I have routinely used the eyedropper to grab colors from all
    over the place.
Maybe what confused me is that I not only switched from a PC
to a Mac, I switched from a desktop PC to a MacBook Pro, so I'm
using a trackpad instead of a mouse. Maybe the awkwardness (I'm
still not used to it) of dragging on a trackpad while holding down
the (one and only one button, on a Mac) made holding that button
down not "feel" like what I had done before.
    Thanks so much!

  • Eyedropper tool doesn't work in Index Mode

When I am in Index mode, and I bring up the color table, the eyedropper tool doesn't work unless I right-click and choose one of the point sample averages. And even then, it doesn't always work unless I hit some combination of Shift-control-option-command. I'm still not sure what the combination is since it seems to differ a little depending on Photoshop's mood.
I can remember there was this problem a couple of versions back, and Adobe fixed it after about a year or so.
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    Thanks, Chuck

Thanks for the temporary solution. The is the same bug was in CS3 then fixed ic CS4. Now it's back in CS5.
I've only had this bug with Macs not PCs. "YES IT'S A BUG!" Question: Is there anybody from Adobe who reads this? Can someone at adobe please tell us when this Mac bug will be fixed? For a premium product at such a price, Photoshop shouldn't have a bug like this. Adobe should be more responsive! Think of the difficulty people like me who write textbooks must have. To give one technique for a PC and then a workaround technique for a MAC. I implore anyone who is experiencing this problem to contact Adobe & let them know about it! Here's a link to their bug report page. https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform   Thanks everyone (for letting me vent). Frederick

  • Eyedropper tool fails to pick correct colors.

Hello, I'm facing a strange problem with eyedropper tool.
The background is a gradient mesh(ignore the crosses). I used eyedropper tool(shift-click/normal-click both gave the same result) on the background and it gave me a strange result. As you see the back ground is blue-to-black gradation but the color picked is green-ish from nowhere.
    How can I solve this?

This is a problem only with gradients because a gradient is an algorithm (formula) where all colors are only those defined with the color stops on the gradient tool (panel). The colors in between are generated on the fly in the color space  of the final output which in this case is the RGB color space (profile) of your monitor. As a workaround for this you can expand the gradient to steps or even rasterize it which will happen in the color space of the document and this will make all color values actually described one by one in the illustrator file either as vector object or in a raster image and then the eyedropper will be able to pick them as expected.
A simple example that demonstrate this: in a CMYK document create a gradient with two grayscale stops of 100% and 99%. then Shift clicking on this gradient will not pick an expected color but if you expend the gradient to two steps you will get two objects at 99% and 100%.

  • CS3 Ruler Tool

According to Adobe Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book, there's a ruler tool hidden behind the Eyedropper tool. All I see are the Eyedropper tool, the Color sampler tool, and the Count tool.

How do I get the ruler tool?

  • Eyedropper tool isn't working correctly in Levels, Curves adjustments

I have installed PS CS 5 Extended on a new computer running Vista Home Premium.  No other version of Photoshop has ever been installed on this system.
The problem that I am encountering is the eyedropper tools in both the curves, and levels adjustment doesn’t work.  The actual sliders seem to work appropriately, but clicking an eyedropper and then clicking a spot on the photo has no effect at all on the image.
I do not encounter this problem when I run the 64 Bit version of the program.  It only occurs in the standard version of CS5, which I need to continue to use due to plug-in incompatibility with the 64 bit version.
I’ve checked the obvious, and ensured that the “preview” box is checked, and  that I have the correct layer selected!
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Not sure if it could be coming into play here, but the sample size for the Eyedropper Tool (proper) affects the use of the Eyedropper in other dialogs.
    Do this:
    1.  Click the Eyedropper Tool in the Tools panel.
    2.  Right-click on the image, and choose Point Sample.
    3.  Now try your Curves function again.
A second possibility is that you have a small selection made somewhere, and the Curves operation is only affecting that, so you're not seeing the change overall.  I know you said you checked everything, but you didn't mention checking for a Selection.
If these are not the issues, I have to wonder whether maybe something's wrong with your display driver.  Since OpenGL is involved in making the display, perhaps an OpenGL problem could be blocking the ability for the eyedropper to pick up the color.  What video card do you have and what version of the display driver?
You can test for OpenGL issues by temporarily deconfiguring the use of OpenGL Drawing:
    1.  Edit - Preferences - Performance
    2.  Uncheck [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing.
    3.  OK out and restart Photoshop.
    4.  Does the problem still occur?  If so, a driver update may fix it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Trouble Sampling Colors with Eyedropper Tool: InDesign CS5

    Hey everyone,
My name is Quin, and I've used InDesign CS5 for the past few years and am working on a magazine layout for the first time. I'm suddenly having a really difficult time getting the eye-dropper tool to extract color samples from images i've placed in my layout. These are either jpeg or PDF images. If I recall correctly, in my past use of the program, i could simply click the eyedropper tool in an image and get my color sample – but suddenly, i'm having trouble getting it to sample color/make a color swatch.
I tried double clicking the tool and excluding everything i wouldn't want it to sample. Tried locking/unlocking layers, tried making sure the image frame itself is selected, tried holding down option, tried trashing the preferences (using a 2012 MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion)… most of the time when i attempt to sample a color, nothing shows up in the fill box, except the classic diaognal red line over white.
The exception is when i use the eyedropper to sample non-image base things i've already filled, like a retangle, it picks up the color fine. So it's likely image specific. Is there something really obvious that i'm missing? It's frustrating because i simply want to sample colors to get a rough idea for text colors and headlines that can match images, and there doesn't seem to be a quick way to do this…
Thanks so much for the help!
    -Quin

Quin, I just had a eureka moment! I was having the exact same problem,  unable to sample color from images with the eyedropper tool, and when I sampled text to apply formatting, it strangely applied a black rule around the new text. The problem was intermittent, with the tool both working  and not working within the same document. I finally realized the tool was  misbehaving when sampling an item on the document, but worked fine when sampling images or text on the pasteboard.
So, the document I'm working on is an ad with a 1pt rule around the border. I have the border on it's own layer at the top level, and locked, so I can select items on the ad without the border getting in the way. What I found is, even though it's locked, the eyedropper tool is sampling the border from that layer!
I tried turning off  stroke  settings in the eyedropper options just gave my text a fill of 'none.' Turning off both stroke and fill settings had no effect on the new text at all. I tried unlocking the layer and just locking the border on it's own, but it still picked up the formatting from the border.
The only thing that worked is to hide the layer! Turn off the layer 'eyeball' and see if that works for you.

  • InDesign Eyedropper Tool Problem or Bug?

I am running InDesign CS3 on Snow Leopard.
Issue: I working merrily on my way in a project when all of a sudden the Eyedropper Tool blitzes out on me by not copying text attributes correctly.
Though I cannot replicate the problem at will it happens maybe once every two weeks or so without warning.
100% of the time, when it happens, the text that I want to apply the attributes to retains the original font but an black outline is applied. It makes me think that I inerrantly toggled some control, but cannot what.
    I reboot—nothing
Note:  I do use stylesheets and manage them well.
When I create a new document the eyedropper works fine. Maybe it in inherent in a worked over document?

  • Why do you need to shift click to select stroke color with eyedropper tool?

    Hi,
    Quick question..
Why do you need to shift click to select the stroke color with the eyedropper tool?
I had the problem where I could not do this earlier and found the solution on this forum.
However I still do not understand the reason for this.
Appreciate if anyone could explain it to me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Nori

    Hi, Nori,
If you have the red and blue rectangle selected and the Fill square selected in the tool panel, as at bottom left, then hold the shift key down and click with the eyedropper on the green stroke in the upper rectangle, then the red fill will turn green but the stroke stays blue. If you select Stroke, as at bottom right, then shift-click with the eyedropper on the green stroke, the blue stroke will turn green but the fill stays red. With Fill selected and shift-click on the yellow fill, the red fill turns yellow; with Stroke selected the blue stroke turns yellow. If you do not depress the shift key, the red and blue rectangle will become yellow and green.
It's complicated to explain, but I think that if you try it step by step it will make sense to you.

  • Eyedropper tool selects wrong colour?

I've had this problem intermittently for a couple of months now and I've had no luck in resolving it. Sometimes restarting the program resolves it but only temporarily. I'm using the latest version of PS CC 2014.
The eyedropper tool is not selecting the correct colour. I'm definitely sampling from the current layer; I've even tried selecting a colour from a solid background and it's still wrong.  The only way I can get the correct colour is to click the colour picker/foreground and select it the long way.  That's a real pain.
For example right now, I have a 50% gray background.  If I use the eyedropper tool, I get 9f9f9f but if I use the colour picker I get the correct 808080.  Why is this happening?  How can I fix it?
    Many thanks!

Hello gener7, thank you for replying quickly!
I've tried changing my sampling size but this doesn't make a difference, particularly because this occurs even if I'm sampling from a solid colour.  With hope, I tried your suggestion of resetting the tool but unfortunately that didn't work either.
I've just quit PS and restarted it and hey! it's working properly again (for now!).  I don't call this a "fix" though because it shouldn't be happening in the first place and it's really annoying to have to keep restarting, especially when I'm in "the zone".

  • Eyedropper tool problem

    Hi,
I've got a problem with Illustrator's Eyedropper Tool that neither my teacher nor Google was able to solve. When I use it to copy a color over to a different part of the image, the copied color is slightly off (I verified this using the color sampler in photoshop). I already made sure that the raster sample size is set to "point sample" so I know it's not because it's sampling from too wide of an area. This only happens on my school's Mac, it works fine on my own Mac. However, when I start a document at school and open it on my own Mac, it has the same problem. When I open a new document on my own Mac there is no problem. Is it something with the 'proof setup'? I need it to make an illustration of a picture using mesh tool. This problem has me stumped - any ideas, please?
I included an example. I used the point sample where my mouse pointer is to fill the circle.

    thanks for the response
at school the color settings are Prepress 2
my settings are: North American General Purpose 2
I already tried changing that but still can't get the colors right.
I had the same problem with an illustration of a bell pepper we had to make using the mesh tool
I couldn't get the right shade of orange from the original bell pepper image when I tried to reproduce it with the mesh tool
The resulting shade of orange I get from using the eyedropper tool varies depending on which part of the bell pepper I use as its source, although it's the same shade of orange everywhere
Also, it's always darker than it should be, never lighter
here the image is in cmyk and the illustrator file is too, so I don't think that is the problem

  • Eyedropper tool - Makes color RGB from CMYK image.

I made an image CMYK in photostop, and then placed it in an indesign file. When I used the eyedropper tool to grab a color from that graphic, the eyedropper tool made that color RGB. Our printer only accepts CMYK. So, I am a bit confused. How can I fix this? Or will this be a non-issue?
    Thanks

I can think of three possibilities for what happened.
If the image is missing (check the links panel) the eydropper is sampling the RGB screen preview.
If you pasted the image from Photoshop instead of Placing it, you only pasted the low resolution RGB screen preview, and you have more problems than the eyedropper color.
If you opened the color picker by double-clicking on the color box, then said OK while the cursor was in one of the RGB fields (the default state), the color was converted from CMYK to RGB.
The only time RGB is a non-issue is when you are outputting on a RGB device (screen or desktop printer). If the printer said he wants CMYK you need to give him CMYK, or pay him to fix it.
