Premier Elements driving me mad

Hi
For info I have a Sony Viao desktop.
Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2
Processor Intel Core (TM)2 Duo CPU
RAM 2.00 GB
32 bit system.
I bought Elements 9 so I could edit videos.
I have transferred some video from my camcorder to the PC using ION EZ Converter.  This stores the video as .mpg.
When I open Elements (which seems to take absolutely ages and hugely slows my computer down whilst it opens), I go into "organise" and see the thumbnaill of the video.  However, I can't do anything with it.  The first time I went in, I managed to drag it across to the left pains and I got a timeline but when I pressed play the timeline moved and I got sound but no picture.  Every subsequent time I try to do the same thing the right hand pane simply flicks into video effects with a load of hang-gliders and I can't get back to the video clip.
So far I must have spent 3 hours going round in circles getting more and more frustrated.
Oh, at someone's suggestion I tried downloading SHARK007 Codec pack but this didn't seem to help.
Graham WT

Graham, you confess to being a newbie, so I hope I can offer some useful thoughts.
You have a camera which records on digital tape.  That means that it's recorded in digital form.  If you are capturing from the composite or S-Video output of the camera, you are converting that video into analogue form and digitising that.  A digital camera should have a Firewire port, and possibly a USB port.  These allow you to transfer the video in digital form, and Premiere Elements (PE) should be able to capture it directly as long as you connect the digital port to your computer, which may need a card added (to a desktop) or a Firewire/USB plug-in if you don't have a Firewire port on the computer.  These are not terribly expensive.
When you import your footage to PE, the first thing it usually does is index the video, and this can take considerable time, especially if it's a large file.  You should see a progress bar at the bottom right of the PE window, in the status bar.  Once the video is index, the audio is "conformed", which is a faster process.  Until the indexing is finished you can't see the pictures, and until the conforming is finished you can't hear the sound.  While indexing is in progress, you should see a fixed image in lieu of the clip images.
The purists recommend using DV-AVI, which is uncompressed and therefore suffers no quality loss and should process faster since it doesn't need to be decompressed for display.  If you have lots of disk space, this is the best option.  If you don't have the luxury of lots of space, compressed formats such as MPEG variants do work well, but the more sophisticated the compression algorithm, the more CPU grunt it takes to do it well.  I've used a number of in-built cards and USB devices over the years, and they have all worked well and none was terribly expensive.  The reason I've had to replace the devices was not that they failed, but that Windows updates destroyed the drivers, which was rather annoying.  Rather than wait for a later update to correct what was fouled up, I've been impatient and bought a new device.  Also, upgrading the machine generally means upgrading the operating system, and support for "legacy" devices tends to be, shall we say, unsatisfactory (Windows 7 64-bit is why I had to replace scanner, printer and video capture device!), and much software besides!  Virtual machines solved some of the issues, but PE doesn't play nicely with sound drivers in virtual machines.
A final point: if your project specifies one video format and your video footage is something else, you will get poor performance, as I have discovered.  Check that match (PE9 offers to correct it with the first clip you add, which is nice), and use the render option if there's a mismatch, and especially if you see red line segments on the top of the timeline bar.  Define the region you want to render with the sliders at the top, press enter, and she's off.
I wish you happy editing - PE is a far better editor than the others I've seen, mostly because it allows many layers of video rather than just the main one and picture-in-picture, and indefinite numbers of effects.  Ask for help here if you run into trouble, and my experience is that one gets excellent advice.

  • Premier Elements 4.0

    Hello
I am running Adobe Premier Elements 4 on Vista home premium. I have made several videos but recently made a video about driving. I wish to 'mask' or 'cover' the number plates of the vehicles in the videos so that they are not identifiable. Can anyone tell me if this is possible with this version of Premier and if it is possible can you also say how it is done. If it is not possible with this version of premier can i download an update or a patch or an add-on to make this possible. If none of the above is possible with this version which version of premier will i need in order to cover the number plates of vehicles. Many thanks.

    Welcome to the forum.
I agree with Steve on all counts. There WAS a neat tutorial on Curt Wrigley's site, but he recently took that down. While the actual tutorial was done in Pr (the old, full version) 6.0, but other than a few different "looks" on the interface, covered the steps necessary.
Now, Steve's materials is the best that I have seen, and also has the benefit of being FOR PrE, and not an older version of the program, that became PrPro.
Track Matte Keying is easy, once one gets the "concepts" down, and is so very useful for doing other things, like THIS. It is a very useful, and powerful tool, and has so many applications - once the concept has been grasped, one is only limited by their imagination.
    Good luck,

  • Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premier Elements to shut down.

I have Adobe Premier Elements 7. When I launch the application then try to begin using it an error is presented which advises Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premier Elements to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project.  When I click OK the program shuts down. I have tried fixes I have found on the Forum. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the program.

  • 64-bit version of Photoshop Elements & Premier Elements 13

Yesterday I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements 13 at an Office Depot Store.  I was finally able to download and install the Premier Elements.  The Photoshop Elements 13 will download, but it will not install.  Near the end of the 35-minute installation (which I have done 8 times) I get a message saying it will not install and that I need the 64-bit version.  There was not an option for the 32 or 64 bit versions when I made the download.  How can I get the 64-bit version without paying for the product again?

  • Bridge / Lightroom and Premier Elements

Am I missing something obvious? I am new to using Premier Elements, but use Lightroom, Phototoshop. In Design every day. So I use LR to manage my photographic files and Bridge for everything else.
I capture video on my camera in AVCHD, so Lightroom can't import or manage the files, despite the claims that it now supports video. Bridge doesn't seem to know of Premier Elements existence and instead I am expected to use yet another browser designed to work with PS Elements. Is their a work around for this, can Bridge be made to work with Premier Elements so I don't have to waste my time learning an entirely new management system. Seems a bit barmy to me that Bridge can't work with an Adobe product.

I know of no way to get Bridge to see and interface with PrElements. I use Bridge for most of my organizing, as I also use InDesign, PS, AI and PrPro. If I am using PrE, I just do a Get Media, though those might have been "organized" in Bridge.

  • Premier Elements 10 - I cannot get the Share/Online Feature to work

Brand new install of premier elements 10 on a new PC running Windows 7.
Everything was working great until it was time to do something with the movie project.   I want to get the movie to YouTube but when I went to Share and then Selected Online - nothing happened.  I can save to computer, DVD, all of the other Share options but nothing happens when I click online.  All of the other choices bring up a new screen with saving details but when I select Online - I don't even get a reaction from the computer.
I did it once without signing into my Adobe ID but then I signed in and no difference.
I created my Adobe ID on a different computer using Photoshop but not sure if that is relevant at all or if even the Adobe ID is relevant.
    Any suggestions?
I know I can save to PC first and then upload (which is what is happening now as I type this) but I would like to remove one step if I can and have it work the way it was designed.

This is probably due to the setting in PrE for Online Sharing, and your YouTube account. I would check the info for each very closely, to make sure that everything is set up properly. Also, from time to time, YouTube has made major changes in their accounts (not that long ago, they decided to go through a department of Google - not sure if they still do), and if you're on, say an extended YouTube account, then it might be that PrE has not yet caught up to those. Do not know if PrE 10 still has the old 10 min. limit, but that was the case, until YouTube started offering extended accounts.

I made installation of Premier Elements 12, but it won't start. Windows says only there is something wrong "C:\Windows\system32\DCIMAN32.dll"

    Here's a common solution.
Try running the System File Checker.  Click on Start and type cmd in the "Search programs and files" box. Cmd.exe will appear at the top of the Menu. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Once the Command Prompt opens, type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and hit Enter.  The System File Checker will start. It might take a while to complete so be patient. Reboot when it has completed and let us know if this helped.

First, note that this is a user-to-user forum. If you want to contact Adobe, you'll need to call or write them on their main site.
That said, as the note says at the top of the forum, you're going to have to provide us a lot more information if you want us to help you. "Stopped working" doesn't tell us much. Does this mean that it was working in the past but then stopped? What stopped? What did it do that it's not doing now? What were you doing when it stopped? Was it when you were adding video to your project, for instance?
What operating system are you using? If Windows, have you manually gone to Windows Update and made sure you've got the non-critical updates, which don't download automatically to your system? Have you ensured you have the latest version of Quicktime, per the program's requirements?
How fast is your processor, how much RAM do you have and how much free, clean, defragmented space is on your hard drive?
What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it? Did you use Premiere Elements to get the video from your camcorder to your Premiere Elements project?

  • Premier Elements 4 very slow and frequently crash

    Dear Adobe support staff,
I've purchased Adobe Premier Elements 4 several yeard ago for an urgnet job I made.
I didn't use it much because it crashes all the time, and it is very very slow and frustrating. So I've used other software instead.
Needless to say that I was very dissappointed.
Now, I want to give it a second chance. but it stiil keep crashing and still very very slow.
    My questions:
    1.  Why does it  crash all the time?  is there is a fix for the problem?
    2.  What kind of  Graphics Card or Video Editing Card do you recommend for my system to work relatively normal ?
    3.  How much will it  cost me to upgrade to version 11 ?
    My system SPEC:
    OS:  Microsoft Windows 7 ultimate  with SP1 (32bit) .
CPU:  INTEL Core2 QUAD cpu Q9550 , 2.83 GHZ with a 4 GB of RAM.
Graphics card:  NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT.
Motherboard:   MICRO STAR INTERNATIONAL , MODEL MS-7353  3.0,  CHIPSET INTEL X48,
    RAM:  4 GB Dual Channel DDR2, 400 MHZ ,  512 MB memory.
    Please  advice.
    Sincerely yours,
    Shimon Tourgeman.

For the crashing, this FAQ Entry might be useful. It starts with a general PrE checklist, then goes into computer and OS tuneup, and ends with many links on troubleshooting and finding causes: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/792580?tstart=0
As for the GPU, any current video card, with at least 1GB of VRAM, will work well. PrE does not place much of a load on the GPU, but it DOES rely very, very heavily on the video driver. Both nVidia and AMD/ATI issue constant driver updates, with nVidia leading the way at this moment.
Also, while talking about drivers, some users have experienced issues with Win8 drivers. I would wait until SP1 has been released for Win8, before changing to it from Win7. For this reason, I just ordered a new laptop, and specified Win7. As the company, ADK, only builds custom and semi-custom video editing machines, they commented that they will ONLY install Win7 at this time, and have been testing Win8, since the first beta. They do not think that it is yet ready for "prime time."
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - I still use PrE 4.0, but on XP-Pro SP3, and have only crashed it 2-3 times over the years. At least 2 times, it was due to OE on my part. However, my computer is tuned and built for video editing.

  • Adobe Photoshop & Premier Elements 10

    Hello,
I just purchased a Mac and Adobe photoshop and premier elements 10 software at best buy. I obtained the redemption code from the internet as the box instructed and created an adobe account and registered each of the serial numbers that were provided on the internet. I inserted the 1st of the five disc set and I can hear the drive reading the disc and the disc shows up in my mac finder, but it will not startup or run any setup program. What am I doing wrong? I just made the switch from HP to Apple, so I am struggling with a new OS and a software that I have never used. Can anyone help?? Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

Thank you for your help in answering my question, Barbara. I noticed when I installed both discs 3 and 5 and finalizing the download, I can see Adobe Photoshop in my Applications folder, but I can't see Adobe Premier. When I open up the Adobe Elements 10 Organizer and try to add a video, it says that I need to insert the free trial version of Adobe Premier. I am confused...
Thank you in advance for your time and help.

  • Premier Elements 10 - Organiser will not allow me to move files anymore

I have been using Premier Elements 10 without too many problems but I now have a problem with organiser which is driving me nuts.
For some reason organiser will no longer allow me to move files around in the left hand folder window. I move files to the new folder but the video file does not move.
Not only that but for some reason organiser has taken two videos from each and every folder and added them to the folder below.  I have tried refreshing, allowing premier to re import the video files, pressing show all etc etc and nothing seems to work.
    OS is windows vista
Has amyone else had this problem and more to the point got it sorted.
    Thanks

Has no one come across this problem?????   Even more frustrating is the fact that now this excuse for editing software will not open any of my projects fully because it has taken it upon itself to mix all my files around and not let me sort them.
ABOBE THIS PIECE OF SOFTWARE IS UTTER CRAP.  IT IS FULL OF BUGS.

  • On the re-installation of Premier Elements 12

I have Windows Vista on a 5 1/2 year old computer. I expect that this computer is near the end of its lifetime.  I've used a box version of Premier Elements for years. (The box version made it easy to reinstall after crashes.)  I have just downloaded Premier Elements 12. I see that my purchase allows only two downloads of the software. I am unclear what exactly this means.
I have one computer.  If I buy a second computer in the future, can I use the second download to install Premier Elements? I mean, Is there a time limit on the use of the second download?
Assume I have used up both downloads. I have an activation code (unlock key). If my computer crashes and I am rebuilding, how can I re-install the PE software? I hope that after a crash I would not have to purchase PE again.

With version 12, you can have the program activated on two computers at any given time. There's no time limit. You own the license forever.
You can install it on pretty much as many computers as you'd like. Logging in to the program activates it; logging out of the program de-activates it.
So you can have the program on, for instance, three or even more computers, as long as it's only activated on two at a time. Make sense?

  • Premier Elements 8 and Windows Media Output

    Hello,
I recently bought a new computer (Win 7 64 bit) to replace my old PC (Vista 32 Bit).  On my old PC I had Premier Elements 7, but got Premier Elements 8 for the new PC.  I like to create Windows Media files as output so I can watch the videos from my XBox 360.  But I noticed that the output from PE8 takes takes up much less of the screen than the output from PE7.  In other words, when I play the WMV file (on either my computer or the XBox), there is a large black border around the video.  When running a WMV file from PE7, the video takes up the entire screen area.
As an experiment, I imported about a 10 second clip from my video camera.  I then created a video in WMV from both PCs using the exact same settings (HD 1080i 30 - I went to the advanced settings and made sure every setting was the same).  And the results were consistent.  The video from PE7 took up the entire screen (in Windows Media Player), while the PE8 output had a significant border around it (I tried playing each file on both PCs and got the same results).
It's much nicer when watching the videos on my HD TV from the XBox if the videos take up the entire screen rather than taking up a much smaller portion of the screen.  Any ideas on how to get the output the same would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I unchecked the setting on the clip and it resolved the issue!  I found the setting under Edit, Preferences, General, Default Scale to Frame Size (no longer the last setting).  It looks like for existing projects I'll have to go and set this on a clip by clip basis (which some have a ton of individual clips).  Hopefully on new projects it will import it correctly.
    Thanks for the answers!
