Premiere CC 2014.1 slows to be unusable on large projects

I have a project that is a feature length documentary, running about 1 hour 20 minutes. When I upgraded to CC 2014.1, the editor became unusably slow. Selecting anything on the timeline will get 2-3 seconds of the beach ball before it shows up as selected, any attempt to change anything takes 2-3 seconds at least. Type in a value and the keystrokes will not appear until after you type them sometimes 5-8 seconds with the beachball sowing up in between. The editor as such is unusable and not acceptable. My machine is plenty fast, accessing everything though a Thunderbolt drive and it was working sufficiently when I was using the previous version, which I can no longer go back to after upgrading the project. Anyone else seeing this or have a solution idea?

Kevin, it is also never wise to not deliver a project to a client because the bugs in the existing editor version prevent you from doing so, especially when the upgrade/update version of the application solves those problems. Staying with 8.0.1 was not an option.
That is one of the rare reasons that you might want to explore updating your project file. However, I would do so carefully with my backups intact.

No I can not return to 8.0.1 to finish my project because 8.0.1 is incapable of working with major bugs in rendering and editing. The good news is that the bug that was in 8.0.1 was fixed in the newest release. The bad news is now there are NEW bugs that also prevent me from delivering my project.
That's terrible. Feel free to start your own thread and I can try to help. Also, please file a case with support: Contact Customer Care
What would also help us is to file a bug report so we can try and reproduce the issue: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug

    Hi guys,
since the CC2014 version of Premiere has been released (on Creative Cloud) I'm experiencing - really often - the MEDIA PENDING (yellow background) issue... even if the clip can be found right clicking and selecting "reveal in finder" or "reveal in project", in the timeline the clip can't be played. Not to mention the many many problems the app is causing stopping working suddenly and obligating me to restart the system to have it regularly working again (usually it stops reproducing the video, only the audio stays alive, but the playhead seems freezes there where I left it).
One more problem: all the app (and customized) keyboard shortcuts are gone. Totally disappeared (this happened just after the last update, CC v8.1 Caravan. Synching from CC was unsuccessful.
Please don't suggest me to contact the adobe italian service to have an help... the last time (almost the same problem) they just made me lose time with some basic procedure checks that I knew were not leading me anywhere.
I ask sorry for my polemic tone, it's a few months that Adobe Premiere is not working anymore as before. And you can't immagine how many hours I've lost.
    Thank you very much,
    My best regards,

Guys, would you suggest me a new graphic card (in case, which model on this Mac - would be great a 4 or 6 MB VRAM GPU) or a new Mac Pro? This is still a great machine, but it's starting becoming unusable due to this Premiere issue (that is day by day more severe).
Thanks a lot for any suggestion,

  • InDesign CC 2014 very slow performance, almost unusable.

    Hello All,
Running InDesign CC 2014 on Mid 2010 Mac Pro, 2.4GHz, 36GB RAM, OSX 10.9.4.
When moving an image or text box InDesign hangs and beach ball spins. I've removed preferences, cleaned Mac cache and ran Onyx. Still slow with InDesign. Other CC apps work fine.
I have the same Apps and set up on 4 other MacPros with no issues.
Does anyone have a solution or a work round?
    Thanks

Have exact same issue on  my Windows 7 machine. Resetting preferences is a workaround.
So I start InDesign whilst holding down these keys.
Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac)
Whilst inDesign is usable again with this fix- I have to do it every time so it trashes all my preferences so NOT GOOD long term fix. Otherwise InDesign freezes and can only be stopped by forcing a quit.
I have manually deleted the preference files and I have created a brand new admin account - but still no luck - will be onto support tomorrow

Sometimes when I reopen PPRo after the crash, I get an error message that says Mercury GPU hardware not found, opening in software only mode, but that is maybe one time out of five.
    Any thoughts?
You may want to update your GPU drivers.
Quick Books is less suspect, but you might try uninstalling it temporarily if updating GPU drivers does not help.

  • Premiere CC 2014.1 starts too slow?

It looks like the current version of Premiere is one of the slowest in terms of startup time.
I have a fast SSD drive and a couple of plugin bundles from Sapphire and Boris FX.
Premiere starts 53 seconds! While Photoshop starts 5 seconds
and Windows 8.1 starts 14 seconds on the same drive!
I recall that Premiere CC (non 2014) was very fast to start with the same amount of plugins.
Is there some hidden setting or a tweak to improve this?
    Thanks!

I am having the same issue as IronAtin. Folders will not import from our Facilis Terrablock into Premiere CC 2014. This used to work just fine in Premiere CC. Please keep us updated as to any fixes/workarounds. Thanks.

  • Updated to Premiere CC 2014 - Now getting Startup Error - Could not find any capable video play modules

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB.
Ever since the Premiere CC 2014 update, on launch, I get this error right after it shows "ExporterQuickTimeHost.bundle" loading (I tried removing this, but it still did it, so I don't think it has anything to do with the QuickTime plugin):
    Adobe Premiere Pro Startup  Error
Adobe Premiere Pro could not find any capable video play modules. Please update your video display drivers and start again.
I never got this in the CC version. I have the latest CUDA driver: version 6.0.46  &  GPU Driver: version 8.26.21 310.40.35f08
The computer is unusable for about 4-5 mins after this happens until it all clears up. This whole process takes up 7-8 mins!
This same thing also happens with Prelude CC 2014.
If anyone knows what's going on I would be very grateful.
    Thanks, Maz

I found a solution that worked for me. Seems to be a permissions problem. Here's the solution I found (found it here: CC 2014 startup issues : Adobe Premiere Pro):
In the finder menu click and hold on the GO menu. Hold the option button and the User library will show up. Click the User Library.
In that folder go to preferences and find the adobe folder.
Right click on adobe folder and click get info.
In the Sharing & Permissions section there should be three names.
All should say Read & Write next to them.
Unlock the lock, switch them all to read and write.
Then click on the little gear directly under the names or to to the left of the lock and in the pulldown click on "apply to enclosed items.
    Then lock the lock again.
Now go to your OS Hardrive and click on Users, your user name, Documents.
    Find the adobe folder there.
    The lock the lock again.
Wait 1 minute. Then launch Premiere.
    This fixed it for me.

  • Canon spanned clips - problem with Premiere CC 2014 v 8.1 (and NOT in CC v 7.2.2)

    Hello,
    I have a spanned XF100 clip (3 clips total 13:50).
I have the whole directory content (XML,...) of the CF card.
I use the Media Browser of Adobe Premiere to import the videostreams.
Everything worked fine with Premiere CC v 7.2.2
I needed to upgrade to Premiere CC 2014 v 8.2 as the new Speedgrade didnt work with the old version of Premiere.
Suddenly the spanned clip does not playback smoothly. In fact, if I place the timer to a specific point, it takes up to 60 sec until the picture changes in the "Programm window" and doesnt playback at all. Only the sounds works, but the video is only a still picture.
This only happens with the spanned clip. All the other "single" clips are working fine.
I do exactly the same thing in CC and CC2014. In CC it works perfectly and in CC2014 it does not.
    Any idea?
Does CC2014 interpret the spanned clips differently?
    thanks for your help!
    Manfred

I have a similar issue with XF305 spanned clips in a sequence mixed with 5dMarkIII and old SD DV footage running very slowly intermittently on 8.1. I had worked case 186016889 this weekend for this issue and the engineer renamed the following folders to _old and PR recreated them. I'm running on Win 7 Pro latest SP, i7 920, 48 GB RAM and Nvidia GTX 480.
    %appdata%\Adobe\Premiere Pro to %appdata%\Adobe\Premiere Pro
    Libraries\Documents\Adobe to Libraries\Documents\Adobe
This seemed to help for a while, but the nature of the slowdown has been from a few minutes to many hours. I did finally notice that I had up to three orphaned PR processes that were still doing I/O. Things get better now for a while after I kill the processes. I've seen other issues with the new version where edit audio in Audition doesn't refresh the waveform after an Audition save and removed and reinstalled PR last night because the edit audition of the next clip overwrote that audio with the previous clips file.
So I have a fresh/clean install and it's still intermittently leaving orphaned processes and running slow. I think I can get it to happen consistently when I send the audio to Audition, but I'm doing an export now so I can go back to the previous version. I'll do a quick test to see if it's consistent before I downgrade so I can re-due the  last three days work.

  • Premiere CC 2014 continuously generating peak files

    Hey all,
I have a problem that seems to have started last week, when I finally had the time to upgrade to 2014 (was in the middle of a few projects and did not want any 'new software issues' to us slow down).
I expect the generation to happen upon import, but I see that it is hitting the same files over and over. I checked the cache folder this morning to see what it was doing and was shocked to see that it was generating thousands of .pek files.
I have included a screenshot of the folder. This is for just one file in my project and there were 3839 of these when I came in this morning. It is also happening for all the other files in the project.
So it would seem that after it gets finished running through all the files in the project, it starts over and does another set, then another, and so on.
So, I turned off auto peak file generation and quit the program. When I restarted while no more peaks were generated, no waveforms are showing up (odd given that there are so many to choose from).
Any clue as to why this is happening?
On the current project I am using H.264 (720 29.97) files and ProRes (Lt) 1080 29.97 files (if this makes a difference).
    Mac (mid 2012) 10.8.3 - 2 x 2.4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    24 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
    NVIDIA Quadro K5000 4096 MB
Is this a bug, or new feature that I need to disable? I did not have this problem with CC (pre 2014).

I had this problem on Win 7. Deleted ALL of the peak files associated with the project and relaunched. It took a while for Premiere to create all new peak files, but eventually it stopped continuously rec-creating them.
    A few other things:
If you set the Preferences to Media - Save Media Cache Files next to the originals where possible, it may alleviate some problems.
Also, Premiere will create PEK files for as many audio tracks as are in the source media - even if you do not have any audio in these tracks.

  • Blurry / Pixelated R3D images in Premiere CC 2014

FYI, for anyone else (like me) who has experienced pixelation / blurry images when viewing certain R3D files on the timeline or in the source window in Premiere CC 2014: this issue can be solved by right clicking on the problem clip(s) in the timeline or in the project files panel, selecting "Source Settings," and clicking "Save to RMD." You'll see the image become fully sharp again immediately.
This blurriness happens even when the still and playback resolution settings are set to "Full" in the program and source windows, and it isn't fixed by adjusting sequence settings. It was still visible even after exporting to Quicktime files, which created a huge headache for us as we tried to figure out what we were doing wrong in our sequence or export settings. Turns out both of them were fine, it was just this "Save to RMD" glitch.
An Adobe staff member replied and said they will fix this in around a month: Red footage pixelated on Import into AE.

Update: Unfortunately it's not all good news.
Trying to render out to H.264 wiht Mercury CUDA still gives a crash rendering with the typically uninformative 'Unknown Error'. Software rendering does not, but it's very slow.
Miraizon Codec and the Premiere native Cineform also crash with 'unknown error'. However I can render out using Cineform Mov at 12bit using my registered copy of Cineform. Not fast, about 1/8 real time.

  • Premiere Pro 2014 upgrade question

    Heya.
So, a while back I upgraded Adobe Premiere Pro to Adobe Premiere Pro 2014. But when I did, instead of just upgraded I was given 2014 as a separate program and I still had the original. It didn't seem to affect anything, so I paid it no mind and just proceeded with 2014. Lately though, all my adobe programs are working for only 15~20 minutes before slowing down to a snails pace and then freezing all together. At first I thought it was my lack of free disc space, so I deleted enough junk to put me at 83GB. But the programs are still sluggish after only a little bit of use. So my question is: What will happen if I delete the original Adobe Premiere Pro (in order to make more space)? Will I still have 2014, or can it not exist on my computer without the original?

Separate installs, separate functionality. Uninstalling older versions will drag down shared components, though, and necessitate a reinstall of the other product. Won't fix anything for you, though, I can tell you that. Your system is most likely simply showing signs of wear like fragmented disks or temp folders filling up just as any update to Windows or a driver could interfere operations. Do some housekeeping and check your settings.

  • Premiere Pro 2.0 slows when dealing with larger video files

I'm having issues with Premiere Pro 2.0 slowing to a crawl and taking 60-90 seconds to come back to life when dealing with larger .avi's (8+ mins). When I try to play a clip on the timeline, drag the slider over said clip, or play from a title into said clip on the timeline, Premiere hangs. The clips on question are all rendered, and the peak file has been generated for each different clip has well. This is a new problem; the last time I was working with a larger clip (45+ mins, captured from a Hi-8 cam), I had no problems. Now, I experience this slow down with all longer clips, although I've only dealt with footage captured from a Hi-8 cam and also a mini-DV cam. This problem has made Premiere nearly unusable. I'm desperate at this point.
    System:
    CPU: P4 HT 2.4ghz
    Ram: 2x 1gb DDR
    Video: ATI Radeon 9000 Series
Scratch Disk: 250gb WD My Book - USB 2.0 (I suspect this might be part of the problem)
    OS: XP Pro SP2
I'm not on my machine right now, and I can definitely provide more information if needed.
    Thanks in advance.

Aside from some other issues, I found that USB was just not suited for editing to/from, and on a much faster machine, that you list.
FW-400 was only slightly better. It took FW-800, before I could actually use the externals for anything more than storage, i.e. no editing, just archiving.
    eSATA would be even better/faster.
Please see Harm's ARTICLES on hardware, before you begin investing.
    Good luck,

[Edit] Oops, I see that Harm DID link to his articles. Missed that. Still, it is worth mentioning again.
Also, as an aside, PrPro 2.0 has no problem on my workstation when working with several 2 hour DV-AVI's, even when these are edited to/from FW-800 externals.

  • Quicktime clips out of sync in Premiere CC 2014

Just downloaded the latest update to quicktime 7 pro and all my imported quicktime files are playing in slow-mo in premiere CC 2014? I restarted after the install on my pc running windows 7. Anyone else having this problem, makesquic it real hard to edit. All clips out of sync.

I've had the same issue on one of the computers where I am.  A slightly older Mac Pro that's worked fine with no issues until this.  Latest Premiere CC installed, footage is Prores with two separate mono tracks, 720, 59.94.  That edit suite is using an AJA board for external monitoring.
The weird thing is that when troubleshooting, I brought the project over to my new Mac Pro and the project plays fine.
I went through the premiere preference settings looking for anything that looks like it'd be able to help, as well as the AJA app.  The problem definitely is introduced when footage is imported into Premiere as it plays fine in quicktime before import, though exports from Premiere pro are out of sync.

  • Premiere Pro 2014 long form ready?

I'm editing a documentary with lots of material and bins. In order to minimize the software from crashing, which it routinely does, I'm cutting scenes using separate sequences and then assembling into a larger sequence. However, this often requires me to recreate effects and insert new audio sources because PP randomly mutes audio tracks and does not faithfully copy effects so this makes for a somewhat cumbersome workflow. A friend of recommended Premiere Pro that he uses for short form work, commercials, music video's, etc. Apparently PP doesn't seem to be ready for feature film and long form work. Is anyone out there using PP for long form work? Or should I consider a more mature platform like Avid?

I'm editing a feature with Premiere CC and I'd have to say that Premiere is getting less and less stable with each Creative Cloud release.  The latest update on October 8th now makes simple dragging of a few elements on the timeline chug like I just downgraded my machine to a Pentium 4.  Yes, I'm pushing Premiere with 8tb of Red media, but instead of improving performance, the latest version has reduced it.
I have a i7 3770k CPU with 16gb RAM and 3 4tb WD Black drives in RAID 0 formation.  My OS and program drive is a 240GB SSD drive.  My computer should be able to handle this project.
My current issues with Premiere CC:
    1) My project takes between 1 and 5 minutes to load.  I'm not talking about the project file load, I'm talking about the 'loading' of 8000 media elements for the feature film... which makes Premiere unusable until it is complete.  This variance seems to occur because of problem 2 below.
    2) Premiere suddenly decides to re-generate peak files sometimes (and Prelude, the media ingesting program, just generates peak files over and over again and is completely unusable for me!).  When Premiere is generating these peak files, 'loading' of media after you've loaded a project takes much longer.  I've recently turned off 'auto generation of peak files' and this problem seems to have gone away for now.
    3) Occasional crashes... Premiere becoming completely unresponsive after doing simple tasks.  When combined with this 1 to 5 minute project reload time, it makes crashes much more frustrating!  I last lost 20 minutes of work while moving one wav file from one track to another, which crashed Premiere... and then I had to wait for the whole project to load again.
    4) File sharing issues between Premiere and Audition.  When I send certain audio clips to Audition, Premiere doesn't release the new rendered files properly and I can't save them in Audition.  I'm forced to switch back to Premiere and save the project, which seems to clear up the audio file so that I can then save it in Audition.
    5) I used to use the Y mode to slip start and end points of a clip in my edit.  This is now unusable in Premiere CC 2014.1.  The preview of the start and end thumbnails get updated about once every 2 seconds of mouse movement, making this mode unusable.
    6) Probably most frustrating is Premiere's ingestion of Red media (and seemingly any media).  If your media is in sub-directories (like most professionally recorded projects), Premiere will make a complete mess of it's organization within your bins.  Some of the ingested media will be in the folder structure as it is on your hard drive and some will not.  Premiere will also sometimes create multiple copies of media that spans multiple files....as is the case for all camera's output... One take might have four 4gb files.  Premiere will sometimes understand that these files are all part of the same clip and create only one instance in the imported bin.  Unfortunately, other times, it creates clip instances for every single sub file within that clip.  I've spent hours reorganizing my project data after importing it with Premiere (and as I said earlier, Prelude is completely unusable with Red media... if constantly regenerates peak files and creates duplicates every time you 'send' the media from Prelude into your Premiere project).
I moved from Sony Vegas to Premiere last year because Vegas had become an unstable mess. Sony Creative Software management determined that new features (and a consistent release schedule) were more important that stability.  That is why they continue to remain an afterthought in most people's choices for an editing suite.  Adobe has huge market share now, but continues to shoot themselves in the foot with professional editors because Premiere is getting more and more unstable.
I've heard rumblings of a management change at Adobe so I'm hoping that they will renew their focus on stability rather than features, because I certainly can't recommend Premiere use for long-form projects right now.  Perhaps Premiere was stable enough with Red footage when Fincher's team was editing Gone Girl last winter, but I'd like to see them edit it now with the latest version of Premiere released on October 8th...  Heads would be rolling at Adobe.
