Premiere CC 2014 Yosemite Macbook Pro Open CL Problems
Hi,
After getting a brand new Macbook Pro i.7. Installed Premiere Pro CC 2014 but its been pretty much unusable when editing. Even when not playing, menus have a latency as if all memory is used and CPU is maxed out...but its not. I tried Apple Final Cut and was amazed at the difference. All video plays in realtime and is very fast so it must be something wrong with Premiere.
I turned of the Open CL hardware option in Project Settings and every is running ok again. Ive tried re-formatting the mac book to factory but its still the same. Its also doing it on other macs in the studio with the new update.
The same project (same edit using same material) takes half the time to render in Final Cut...as tempted as I am to stay with final cut I've been using Premiere for years and really don't want to change.
Is this a known issue and what can I do to get help resolving it?

Background:
* just trying to decide what to go for re video editing app with more features than iMovie
* last time I'd tried Adobe Premiere Elements on my MacBook (but it was before I had an SSD) the performance was not good - it was sluggish to the point I really didn't want to use it
* so this question is just about whether in general FCP X performs better on a Mac (you'd think it would no, as it's made/optimized for a Mac)
My MacBook:
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3Elements is essentially an amateur app and Premiere a professional one similar to the discontinued Final Cut Pro 7.
FCP X is a radical new approach to editing which like Marmite, you either love or hate.
It is probably between the 2 in capabitlity but much closer to Premiere.
Some might say it was better than Premiere, whilst other long standing broadcast editors would disagree.
It all depends on your standpoint and I am trying to give an unbiased appraisal.
Some of the techniques it uses are way ahead of all other apps and this is what worries people who have an established way of working, though as I mentioned in another post, there are a few omissions which have upset those editors.
Some might say (echoes of Jeremy Clarkson) that FCP X is the most advanced editing app on the planet albeit with a few teething troubles. -
Issues with sleep/wake with 2014 retina Macbook pro
Hello everyone,
I have lately been noticing some issues with my 2014 13" retina macbook pro when sleeping and waking. As soon as my laptop goes into sleep while I am using I move the mouse around from the track pad to wake it back up. When i do that it takes the latop around 2 mins to get the login screen up where i put in my password to log on. The screen stays blank for 2 mins and I am just sitting around waiting to log back in. Is anyone else having this issue with there 2014 retina macbook pros? Anyone know of any fixes? I have just updated my laptop to Mavericks 10.9.3 and the issue are still there.I upgraded my early 2011 MBP to 16 gigs with Crucial. My machine would not sleep properly, because when I tried to wake it, it would wake from its hibernate image file. This is the issue I've seen here in this list.
I tried all the suggestions I saw on these groups. Nothing helped. I contacted Crucial, who suggested that if their RAM was defective, they'd replace it per their warranty process. I needed some proof it was their RAM causing the problem.
I put the original 8 gigs RAM back in the machine (2 4 gig sticks), and it behaved normally. I then put one stick of Crucial RAM in, all by itself. The machine behaved normally. I put the other stick of Crucial RAM back in, and took the first one out. The machine would not properly sleep and wake from sleep. This proved that one stick was causing the problem, and the other was not.
Defective RAM!
I then requested and received an RMA from Crucial to send the defective RAM back. They paid shipping. I got new sticks of RAM about a week later. These new sticks of RAM work properly. No sleep issues.
I'm surprised and disappointed to say that this is not the first time I've received defective RAM from Crucial. I've purchased from them for years, and had GREAT service and received high quality products. The past couple years my experience has been different.
I'm still pretty steamed about this, as I spent a great deal of time trying to diagnose the problem and fix it. I don't really have that kind of time to waste. My expectation was that their RAM was high quality, and unlikely to be at fault.
Perhaps this is just a bad batch of RAM. I get that. I can forgive them once. But this has happened twice in the past three years. I'll look elsewhere for my next memory purchase.
Keep in mind that their customer ratings are generally very high. My experience is probably isolated. -

macbook pro touchpad curser problems. typing randomly jumps to wherever the curser is resting at the time. unbelievably maddening. multiple devices same all have same problem. hard to believe we cannot find anything on the apple site about this. MANY complaints outside of this site on this issue... clearly a touchpad/battery design flaw being ignored by Cupertino. during the writing of this post, the curser jumped randomly and started typing in a different location six times. IMPOSSIBLE to use as a word processor since typing becomes quite frustrating. HELP. any ideas? Fanboy and shareholder. three macbook pros in the house...all the same problem. (please do not offer separate keyboard as solution...this is a laptop, not a Surface Pro...)
Go step by step and test.
1. Restart
2. Shut down the computer.
Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.
System Preferences > Point & Click
Try turning off three finger dragging and then turning it on after testing.
3. Is there any Bluetooth device nearby with failing batteries? If so, replace the batteries.
4. Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
5. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
6. Close all windows and quit all applications.
Click the Spotlight -the magnifying glass icon- in the menu bar. Enter Disk utility in the box.
Select Disk Utility from the drop down. When the Disk utility window opens up,
select Macintosh HD, then First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions button.
Ignore the time remaining estimate. -

I received a 2012 MacBook Pro INtel i7 for my birthday this May 2013. It constantly drops my airport connection. My ancient 2006 MacBook Pro has no problem connecting to airport, nor staying connected. I've had to write this message several times as I keep losing the airport connection and have to reconnect. BTW: I am less than five feet from the airport base.
Thanks for help.After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport. -
Unresponsive keyboard and trackpad on pre-installed yosemite macbook pro mid-2014
Hi,
I have a brand new MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). Shipped with Yosemite pre-installed, the version I have is 10.10.1 . I don't have any software installed except Google Chrome, so it is clean/new OS.
I noticed sometimes the keyboard and trackpad become completely unresponsive after waking up the laptop from sleep. Happened several times, the last time it happened I could not reset PRAM or SMC as keyboard was unresponsive even after restarting or shutting down so I had to Re-Install OS.
Right now I have the laptop next to me, again the keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive after wakeup from sleep, and I did SMC reset but did not work. Trying to reset PRAM or go into Recovery mode .. etc, it is not responding to the keyboard, as it is unresponsive at that point as well.
What should I do ? How can I tell if it is Hardware or Software problem ? I ran the apple test diagnostics test and there was no problem reported. And I am not able to install Mavericks because it is shipped with Yosemite pre-installed so it is not allowing me to downgrade.
thoughts ?I just noticed that I have the following in the system log, both keyboard and trackpad are completely unresponsive even when shutting down/restart/sleep. I cannot even reset PRAM.
This keeps showing up in the log, not sure what it means.

New SSD (2014) and Macbook pro 4.1 compatability
Hi All-
Given current prices, I would like to upgrade my hard drive on my early 2008, Macbook Pro (4.1, pre-unibody) and also upgrade my OS (Snow Leopard to Yosemite).
The hard drive in this Macbook pro has a Sata I connection and I am wondering what my best SSD options are in 2014.
I am most concerned about issues of potential backward compatibility of Sata III with SataI.
I understand Sata III should be be backward compatible with Sata I, but I've seen that some people have had issues with this.
So I am wondering if anyone has actually made this upgrade with any of the newer SSD drives that are available (Samsung 840 Evo, SanDisk Extreme Pro, Crucial m550) and how it has worked out?
I understand OWC sells compatible drives, but given the great prices on these newer drives, I am leaning towards a more current drive with all it's modern goodness (longevity+controller) with the understanding that my Sata I connection will be a bottleneck.
I am also curious about whether I should just look for older Sata II SSDs? For this I would need recommendations.

Apple apps not launching since OS X Yosemite (Macbook Pro medio 2009)
Hi,
Since I downloaded OS X Yosemite from the App Store and updated my operating system, I haven't been able to open certain Apple applications, like Mail, iCal, Calculator, Safari. Other applications, like Chrome, Firefox, CleanMyMac or Coda 2.5 are working just fine. I can't even get the App Store to launch. I tried opening the apps through Spotlight, the dock and via Finder, but nothing works.
My Macbook Pro is from medio 2009 and runs Yosemite fine except for the apps not launching. I can't check my system specifications, because ...these also won't launch.
Suggestions anyone? Perhaps this is a familiar problem.

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Blank screen after rotating the display in Yosemite (MacBook Pro Late 2013)
Hi,
after installing Yosemite on my MacBook Pro 15" Late 2013 I have trouble rotating it's screen. After I launch Preferences and click Displays while pressing alt and command keys I see the list of possible orientations available.
If I now select 270° the screen immediately goes black. To be clear: The display is not turned off like when the MacBook sleeps. It's still lit, but only shows a black screen. After turning the MacBook off by pressing and holding the power button I can boot and voilà, the screen is perfectly normal, showing everything rotated at 270°. If I reset to Landscape from there (i. e. 0°), I have no problem at all, everything still works. Setting it back to 270° again lets the screen go black again.
I have an installation of Mavericks at my primary partition and it has no problems at all with rotation. Is this a known bug or can anyone confirm this behaviour?
As a hint for others suffering the same problem: You can get around the hard reset by pressing shift-comand-q followed by enter key. This logs your user out of the system and gets you back to the login screen. This obviously kind of reinitializes the UI. After that, the display's rotation is working and you just have to login again.
Even if this is some kind of workaround it would still be much more convenient not requiring this workaround.

yes, I had the same issues here! My solution was to force the system to use the discrete graphics card instead of the intel one. Then you get some additional options for the resolution which are much more usable. If you need further infos let me know. I'm using the MacBook in a rotated state about 95% of the time and it works pretty well now (at least in Mavericks, where I also experience your described behaviour).

External back up won't work on Yosemite Macbook Pro
I downloaded OS X Yosemite a couple of days ago, works well. I went to back up my Macbook Pro on the external hard drive I have always used and it won't work, it just keeps saying preparing back up. It is a WD My Passport hard drive. I tried removing the hard drive and selecting it to use a a back up but still wouldn't work. It has worked fine every time before downloading Yosemite. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I know that no one has replied yet, but figured out the issue. I called Applecare and they couldn't figure it out, so sent me to a genuis at the Apple store. They too couldn't figure it out and told me that it was a firmware issue with the Toshiba dvd external drive. When I got home, I thought I would try one more thing. I hooked it up to a powered hub and it works perfectly. I'm not sure why no one else thought of it, but glad that I did.

My Macbook Pro opens Safari and Google chrome every time it starts up.
Every time I log into my Macbook Pro, it loads Safary, Google Chrome, Excel. I untick the box "re-open windows when loggin back in". I allways close all programs before shutting down. Anyone have a solution for this nuisance?

I have a macbook pro retina 15" and I recently have upgraded to mavericks. Even since I upgraded, the open function with most, if not all, applications will not work and I recive the "failed to open due to programmer error", in the case of photoshop, as far as other applications are consirnded the open tab opens and close immediately after it opens (automaticaly). Any suggestions? Thanks Ed.I have this problem too with my Mid-2012 MBP non-retina. The screen would click once, after being left for a long time, and would be fine after that, until you close it and re-open it again after a long time. It is especially loud in the morning so I think it is temperature dependent. Happened about 3 months after buying. I took it to Apple. First time they replaced the entire screen. They had to since that is the only way to replace the hinge. When I got it back, the screen still clicks. Took it back to Apple again. Second time they just tightened the screws securing the display with the unibody. When I got it back the second time, the screen still clicks. Took it back to Apple again. The third time they replaced the entire screen AGAIN! When I got it back, the problem was fixed for 2 days, then the screen started clicking again so I'm back to square one. I'm wondering whether I should take it to Apple the forth time, but then again, they've already replaced the screen twice which didn't work so I'm not sure what more they can do. It's either this is normal, which implies the screen hinge is really badly designed or the clicking has nothing to do with the screen at all.
