Premiere CC 7.1 - Red frames in playback and export

Having some problems after the 7.1 update.
In a variety of projects, on a variety of footage, we're experiencing random fully red frames (#ff000). Sometimes there are 1-2 frames in a clip, and occaisionally it's 80%-90% of the frames in a clip (this is less frequent). It has never been all of the frames of a clip.
This happens:
- On an undrendered timeline (you'll be watching an edit and you'll see a red frame - if you scrub back to it it'll still be there)
- On a rendered timeline
- In exports
Red frames that are visible on a timeline, are sometimes carried through to the export and sometimes not. Sometimes an exported file will display red frames that were not present on the timeline.
Red frames seem to be based on clips, not sequence frames. For example, in one of my exports, I had video footage with a lower third graphic over it. In one frame of the export, a red box appeared over the graphic, but the main shot was not affected.
This has happened to the following types of footage:
- .MTS (from C100)
- .MXF (from C300)
- ProRes 422 MOV
- ProRes 4444 MOV with alpha channel
Fixes that seem to work:
- If an export has red frames, re-export. Watch the new one like a hawk. Repeat until you get lucky.
- If a clip on a timeline has red frames, force a re-render via a Crop filter or similar
- Quit Premiere and reopen it
System/environment details:
- OSX 10.8.5
- Premiere Pro CC 7.1
- Mercury Playback Engine Software Only
- Often (always?) I-Frame Only MPEG sequence settings
- Much (all?) of the footage we've been working with has been on AFP shares via GigE with MTU of 9000
I haven't been able to confirm yet:
- Whether this ever happens with locally stored footage
- Whether this ever happens when Queueing to media encoder (rather than Exporting from Premiere)
- Whether changing to a QuickTime Desktop based sequence setting resolves the issue
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? It's frutstratingly un-testable, since it seems to happen at random. We'll continue to gather data points though and see if we notice any other trends.
Edit: Added additional system context

the error also appears with PRORES 422 files, but only after a certain amount of source data from prores 422 clips is processed / read
i made a test comp in AE with only one gigantic prores 422 source clip (8000 pixels x 1000 pixels @25fps) and the error first appeared at around 1500 frames read from the source file (equalling a few GB of source read and processed). after the red frames error appears once, the erroneous red frames appear more often but never in the same place when rendering the same comp several times)
i also made a test comp containing only a few full HD prores 422 clips (1920 x 1080, @25fps), there the error appeared only seldom (but still randomly). so it can be that a broader user base never experiences this erroneous behaviour at all.
i also made a testcomp containing about 40 full HD prores 422 clips (each 1920 x 1080, scaled down to 10% in size and distributed all over the comp so i can see them all at once). the erroneous red frames appeared within the first rendered frames!! obviously, many qt files had to be open and read in parallel, and so the error appeared from the very beginning of the rendering / export.
i suspect that the AE / PR applications open a RAM buffer for each open prores source file they need to read, and that this buffers somehow becomes compromised when it overflows and when buffer resize / buffer clear / flush operations take place.
of course i tested all sorts of RAM assignents for MP rendering (1GB per core, 2GB, 4GB, 6GB) and i rendered with several different settings of how many cores and ram should be available to other tasks. but the error always appeared. randomly.
--> fact in AE is, that nearly all MP renders / exports using prores clips as source files contained the bad red frames. when rendering without the MP option on (but of course up to 20x slower) so far i never experienced this error (of course always after fresh restarts once the error appeared)
PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP

  • Red Frames in Playback and Export

    After finding out that others have had this problem and found solutions, I expected the solutions to work, but no luck so far.
    I am working with HDV 1080i60 footage in Premiere Pro CC 7.2.1 on OS 10.9.1. When I play my footage through the source window (by double-clicking it in the Project window) or on a sequence timeline, I see intermittent red frames - a lot of them. The red frames persist through export, leaving me with no way to edit this footage except to transcode it to a different format - presumably with an encoder other than Adobe Media Encoder.
    Adobe, you have posted possible solutions for other people with this problem, but obviously it persists. What's the nex step?

    LFedit, my red frames do not appear only on cross dissolves. They appear during normal playback in the source monitor as well as in the program monitor AND in the small preview area in the project window.
    I've seen posts about this problem from the end of 2013, but I'm glad to know I'm not the only still experiencing trouble. I've already submitted a bug request to Adobe. Please do the same, LFedit. The more people report it, the more likely Adobe will pay attention.

  • Red frames on the movie exported

    Hi, I exported a project to MPEG2 blu-ray (source XMF files, camera Canon XF100), and I have several red frames within the movie. It's almost unusable. I have tried to do media cache cleaning, re-rendered the effects, but still without success. I work on Macbook Pro with OSx Yosemite. Premiere is 2014.2 v8.1 Caravan build 8.2.0.
    Could someone have experienced this issue?
    Does Adobe have a fix?
    In the meanwhile, I prefer downgrade to CS6, that is rock solid. The problem is the waste of time to start from zero, because the project isn't down-compatible. This is a crazy way by Adobe to handle a downgrade!
    Bye

    Hi, I still have the issue. I'm using Premiere Pro 2014.2 v8.1 Caravan 8.2.0 (65) build, on Macbook Pro, half 2012, Yosemite 10.10.2. Several red frames in the output exported (MPEG2-bluray) from MXF source (Canon XF100). After several export try, the red frames still remain, but they are located in different positions. I confirm that the same clip exported using Premiere CS6 (and also using Premiere CC 2014.0 v8.0) are OK, without red frames!!! The big issue for me is that the project cannot be opened by previous Premiere releases, and I lost weeks of work!!!
    Adobe, any news? I'm available to give you all the information you ask to test the case.

    Confirma que se trata de una cuestión de permisos.
    Por cierto te aconsejos actualices la 9.1  a 9.2, posiblemente se habría arreglado así también.
    Bueno los pasos son:
    2. Select Go from the Finder Menu.
    3. Select Computer.
    4. Select Macintosh HD.
    5. Select Users.
    6. Select your user profile.
    7. Right click on user profile. Select Get Info.
    8. Go to bottom and unlock with admin password to make changes.
    9. Make sure your user profile has Read and Write privileges by selecting from dropdown menu.
    10. Go down to wheel at very bottom and select Apply to enclosed items. This should allow Adobe Bridge to run properly.

    In CS6, When editing Pro Res 422, Video with single layer plays back fine but with 3 layers playback and export are very choppy.

    Thanks Curt.
    I usually edit w FCP7. And My computer never had playback issues w 422 Pro Res files.
    CS6 Memory was before on +- 55% and even the single layer video was playing back choppy. So I changed it to 100% not realy knowing what that means. At least the single layer video is playing now fine.

  • Black frames on playback and render with .MOV exported from Avid

    Hi there,
    some of our customers experience troubles while importing quicktime .mov files from last Avid Media Composer versions (latest 6.0.x, 6.5.x and 7.0.x versions).
    Using any Avid codecs for export, when clips are played in AE, black frames appear on video, these are also present on renders and exported files.
    Playing the same clips in other softwares and media players, the video is clear.
    As we discussed with Avid support, Avid made changes in his software and codecs and it sounds like AE doesn't correctly interpret it.
    Have you already heard of (or experienced) such troubles?
    Best regards,
    Sebastien GEFFROY,
    CTM Solutions.

    I'm having the same problem, but can't get a clean render out using a different codec.
    I was trying to render all my After Effects compositions out as Quicktime with DNxHD 120 selected.  This would give me random full frames of solid red.  Every single render.
    So, I tried selecting Quicktime NONE and most of the renders would just abort with the bleating lamb noise.
    So, I tried AVI uncompressed.  Every single composition rendered out, but every single rendered clip had exactly the same glitch - A solid black line that spans the bottom of the frame and increases in size every frame until it fills the screen.  Then the picture returns and a couple of seconds later a full frame black flash.  Same pattern and same duration - every clip.
    So, if DNxHD codec has a problem and Quicktime has a problem and AVI has a problem I'd say it's safe to say that it's probably not a recording codec issue.  How can three different codecs present a problem?
    I've checked my source files.  It doesn't matter what drive I place them one, either an internal solid state drive, or USB3 spinning disk in a caddy or network path to a NAS raid, or system drive, they give the same problems.
    It doesn't matter what the source files are either - Tiff sequences from 3DS Max, JPG timelapse sequences from Nikon camera, video camera files, Quicktimes, AVIs, you name it - Broken renders.
    So, I'd say that having tested my input files and tried many render codecs that the problem lies in between - Either the Computer or After Effects itself.
    Now, up until Creative Cloud I was using my trusty old CS2.  That worked fine.
    If you read the internet it's full of people having rendering problems when using CS6 and CC.
    Now, in my understanding, the main difference between me using CS2 and CC is the Adobe software - GPU renderer.
    I am using the exact same workflow on the exact same equipment:-
    HP Z1 Xeon E31280 @ 3.50GHz
    Windows 7 64 bit professional
    8GB DDR3 RAM.
    Nividia Quadro 3000M.
    I'm close to giving up.  I'm going for a full system re-install, the gound up this bank holiday onto a brand new empty system drive.
    I'll follow it with trying out various Nvidia drivers.
    Can anyone point me to a definitive answer?  I have trawled many different forums, with people all having the same issues and no one has an answer.

  • Red frames on playback

    Hi
    I have made a project with 1.5 and it was OK
    Now I need to add another audio track to the same project, so I have opened the old project with Encore 2.0
    I am getting some RED full frames every few sec.
    If I play the M2V file with another software I am getting a good playback.
    thanks

    W/regard to the red flash frame issue, I've gone in and replaced the offending frames and this has "solved" the red flash frame rendering problem--but only by actually elimating the offending frames.
    The frames that rendered red were either non-specific black frames or very bright video frames (flashbulbs). The flashed frames did not seem to be helped when I applied filters to only those specific frames--which kind of surpised me because it seemed that John had suggested a very good workaround. I would suspect though that filration might work in some instances and that will be one of the first things I try if/when I am ever beset by the dreaded red flash frames in the future.
    Overall though it seems a very disappointing performance from Adobe Encore, since these same frames rendered fine in both Avid Xpress and ProCoder and it was def. enough of a pain that I'll be pretty tempted to avoid Encore entirely when authoring my next project. Hopefully, this is something that can be fixed with the next iteration of Encore.
    Thanks for your help.

    System Settings--Scratch Disk Video Capture and Audio Capture set to RAID. Video Render and Audio Render set both to Maxtor or RAID. Either case dropped frames.

  • Choppy playback and export in Premiere Pro 6

    I have an AVHCD Lite file that plays smoothly in the source file, but once loaded into Premiere, plays back choppy no matter how much rendering I do, and it's even choppy when I export it. What could be causing this?

    Most likely a mismatch between video and editing sequence

  • Playback and Exporting Corrupt?

    I keep having this sporadic issue where I am editing a sequence and the playback starts to lag and other times lines appear in the playback as well. This same problem happens with exporting. For reference sake I am editing off one of a literally brand new 3.5 GHz 6 core 16GB ram Mac Pro. The video company I work for has 9 more of the identical computers. This is the only one with a problem. I do not believe it is a ram or video card issue only because I can do anything within After Effects with no problem whatsoever. I have reinstalled Premiere and I am still having these issues. I opened the projects on another computer and they work just fine. Any suggestions?  I took a screen recording of the problem so you can see what I am seeing. Premiere Playback Issue - YouTube
    Thank you for your help. - Jon

    Hi ClayTron,
    There seems to be a few issues with the OS X 10.9.3 update and Premiere Pro CC (and other non-Adobe applications related to video). We know about the issues and are working with our partners for a fix. In the mean time while we're fixing issues, you might want to do the following to troubleshoot. These are things other users have tried and helped:
    Sign out and then sign back in to Creative Cloud: Sign out, Sign in | Creative Cloud Desktop app
    Remove CUDA drivers if they have been installed (usually by Resolve): Avoid installing NVIDIA CUDA drivers on computers with AMD GPUs
    Make sure all third party plug-ins are updated.
    Go to Utilities > Disk Utility. In Disk Utility, select your Mac HD in the left pane and click the Repair Disk Permissions button to repair disk permissions.
    In Finder, press Option, then choose Go > Library. Open Application Support > Adobe > Common, and then place the Media Cache in the trash.
    In Finder, choose Apple > System Preferences. Click the Energy Saver icon: Make sure Automatic Graphics Switching is unchecked. This forces the more powerful GPU to be used for OpenCL processing.
    Reboot the computer.
    Launch Premiere Pro.Trash preferences on launch by pressing Shift + Option while launching the application.
    In Premiere Pro, choose File > Project Settings > Renderer > Mercury Playback Engine Software Only. This should allow you to export without the horizontal lines.
    In Premiere Pro, for any new or existing sequence, select the sequence, choose Sequence > Sequence Settings. In the Sequence Settings dialog box, change Editing Mode to Custom. In Video Previews > Preview File Format, change it to QuickTime. Set the codec to Apple ProRes 422, if you have the ProRes codecs installed. If not, try another codec, like Photo JPEG. This helps any problems with rendering.
    Take a look at the Preferences folder once more, if the OS is updated and not clean installed, Mac OS can set permissions of folders and files incorrectly. To fix this in the case of Premiere Pro, go to the preferences folder and set the entire preferences folder ( /Library/Preferences/Adobe/Premiere Pro/7.0 ). Select the folder, press CMD + I, and then set all of its contents to be writable, not read-only.
    See if your system runs more smoothly after performing these steps.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Text created in Premiere showing other text files in the timeline and exports.

    Hi,
    I'm creating slates with text generated in Premiere. For each new slate I am duplicating a text layer, Option + Dragging the duplicate file over the text I'd like to replace, then opening the new text layer in the text editor and updating the information.
    Things seem fine at first and then randomly text layers in the timeline will show text from other files in the timeline. If I open the text file up in the text editor I see the correct info but not in the timeline.
    The only fix I have found is to delete render files, move the text layer around in the timeline, quit and re-open. But still, sometimes when I export, the export preview window will show the wrong text and when I export the file I create shows the wrong text as well.
    It seems like Premiere is getting confused by multiple text files in the timeline and is pointing to the wrong cache files.
    Thoughts would be a huge help!

    Thanks for the tip Kevin. Anything I can do to avoid this in the future?
    I've had this happen on a number of projects. My media and project files are on a SAN, cache and previews are local.
    Thanks,

  • Flickery playback and export even when source footage is not flickery

    when premiere plays certain clips back it looks flickery
    these clips are not flickery to begin with,  but they become flickery when part of a premiere project, there seems to be no rhyme nor reason for it
    any ideas how i can solve it?

    there is no dialogue box coming up for me .....
    I choose 'add premiere pro sequence'  , it just says it is loading, a little yellow bar loads from left to right,  then nothing.   i can see a greyed out text belown stating "sequence not available" and what appears to be a tick box beside it, but i dont know what it refers to or how i shall correct that if it actually means the sequence is not avaIable.  I have , to the best of my knowedge, created a sequence within premiere by choosing the option "render in out"  , i dont know what else im supposed to do.

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 RAM issues, audio dropouts and export failures

    So I've upgraded to PP CC 2014, it worked fine for a while. Then I've noticed that while editing audio starts to dropout (I'm getting PP system message in the low right corner). I tried to dig up some info on the subject, but the only explanation I see that after couple of hours of editing PP eats up nearly all of my RAM.
    Any solutions?
    My specs:
    i7-2600K 3.4 GHz
    Quadro 2000
    32 GB RAM

    Take a look at your GPU usage with something like GPU-Z to see if both Premiere versions are using the same amount of MPE GPU hardware acceleration.  Actually with CC 2014 it might work faster because Adobe added in more 4k effects/features for GPU acceleration.
    You might want to download our Premiere Pro BenchMark (PPBM) and run it on both versions.  The H.264 very complex timeline has 4K material in it and usually shows Premiere Pro 8.xxx take about only half the time that Premiere Pro CS6 take to export that same timeline.

  • Simultaneous stream playback and export to file

    I'm trying to write a client application that receives an audio stream via RTP. I can get it to playback the stream using a Player as the audio is being received and I can also get it to export the stream to a local file using a Processor as it is being received. However, I cannot seem to merge the two functionalities. I think the problem is with using a Player and a Processor connected to the same DataSource. The error is that the Player is never initialized. The controllerUpdate method is below and it seems that it never reaches the player.realize call. I am a beginner at JMF so maybe I haven't learned enough about MediaEvents. Any help would be appreciated.

                            + ((StopAtTimeEvent) control).getMediaTime().getSeconds());
                    control.getSourceController().close();
            if(myController instanceof Player)
                Player player = null;
                // If player wasn't created successfully from controller, return
                player = (Player) myController;
                if (player == null)
                    System.out.println("Player is null");
                    return;
                if (control instanceof RealizeCompleteEvent)
                    System.out.println("HELLO");
                    PlayerWindow pWindow = find(player);
                    if (pWindow != null)
                        pWindow.create();
                    pWindow.setVisible(true);
                    player.start();
                if (control instanceof ControllerErrorEvent)
                    player.removeControllerListener(this);
                    PlayerWindow pWindow = find(player);
                    if (pWindow != null)
                        playerWindows.removeElement(pWindow);
                    System.out.println("Error in ControllerErrorEvent: " + control);
        }

    Okay, then here's one possible method to do something like this:
    $totalSize = 0
    Import-Csv .\fileListing.csv | ForEach {
    $fileDetails = Get-Item $_.FilePath
    $props = @{
    File = $fileDetails.FullName
    'Size(B)' = $fileDetails.Length
    $totalSize = $totalSize + $fileDetails.Length
    New-Object PsObject -Property $props
    } | Select File,'Size(B)' | Sort File | Export-Csv .\fileReport.csv -NoTypeInformation
    (Get-Content .\fileReport.csv) + "`nTotal Size,$totalSize" | Set-Content .\fileReport.csv
    This assumes an input CSV named fileListing.csv with a header of FilePath for the paths.
