Premiere CC CPU usage on 16-core Z820 inefficient
Hello,
I have noticed various inconsistencies with Premiere Pro and Media Encoder's (CC) render times on Win 7. I have a maxed out 16-core HP Z820 with 32GB, SSD and Velociraptor drives and a Quadro K5000 card.
When I use Media Encoder or Premiere to render an H264 .mp4 (1920x1080) from a ProRes source file, I look at the resource monitor and Media Encoder is using on average, 20% of my CPU, which is about 4 cores out of 16 available. Why is this? Is this because of a dodgy Quicktime implementation within Win 7 or does Media Encoder simply not know how to efficiently use multiple core CPUs?
I have not yet done any extensive tests, but it seems that rendering H264 from a RED 5K source file is actually much quicker.
Can you please elaborate on why this is and also share some details on Media Encoder's and Premiere's CPU and GPU utilisation specs?
Thanks!
Yes, it's actually funny and explains why AME & PP is so much faster at rendering and down-scaling RED 5K media, compared to a lighter 1080p ProRes file.
What is interesting, though, is that Davinci Resolve for PC obviously uses the same Quicktime component, but DNxHD render times seem to be much better. This is probably because it uses CUDA GPU, while AME, as far as I know, does not.

High CPU usage on all cores by ntoskrnl.exe? Help needed urgently Please.
ntoskrnl.exe, system, has multiple cores running with high usage, locking up my system when using programs.
After looking through the forums I did the following:
I ran
sfc /scannow but nothing found.
I used process Explorer to find that the system has a thread <ntoskrnl.exe!TtlSid HashLookup+0x 1ffc> that
is using up 40+% of all four cpu cores. Looks like a driver fault with 8.1, but cannot pinpoint the device. Any clues msg me.
I have created an etl file that contains usage data. this is present here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8554814/highCPUUsage.zip
Would be a lot of help if this can be resolved. please help.forgot to ask, may I know your PC model?
mostly is related to the network, networking software, or software which need internet connection
did you already updated all the network driver?
is there any networking software or downloaded software? may I know your antivirus status? firewall?
try clean boot and go to safemode to check, choose safe mode only, safe mode with networking and normal mode without internet (unplug cable or disconnect Wifi) -
High CPU usage on one core from 8.
This may not be an Arch specific issue but any help to track it down is appreciated...
One of my 8 cores is showing ~75% usage on kworker/0:1 right after logging in , I can kill the process but it will take a while to kill it, after killing it ,it goes down to 0.
Same thing happens in windows 7, but there I'm not able to kill it, the process in windows is system interrupt, so this smells like Hardware related...
any low-level psycho out there that can advise how to track it down on Arch?anything with powers/knowledge

Hi there,
since a few days there is on some machines (40-60) a high cpu usage on one core (quad core cpu machines) with the WMIPRSVE.EXE if the HARDWARE INVENTORY CYCLE started.
i try out some tests, read some forum articles and troubleshooting the WMI management but a real problem i doesn´t see.
in some articles i read that hardware inventory runs about minutes up to more hours but some machines runs longer, someone more as 1 day.
here an example of mine PC:
at 8:07 i started Hardware Inventory Cycle, in the InventoryAgent.log i can see that some Collection Namespace are captured.
after a few minutes there stopped and does nothing round about 5.9 hours or better, after 21436.097 Seconds.
For any hints i am grateful. :)

Looks like something in one or both of those wmi queries. it goes from 8:10:03 to 14:06:43 right around there. 6 hours to do that...
try running those queries from wbemtest manually; and see which one just never finishes.

SCCM 2012 R2 Linux\Unix Client High CPU Usage
Hello,
We have recently implemented SCCM 2012 R2 in a mixed Windows \ Solaris \ RHEL environment. The Unix\Linux client are at the SCCM 2012 R2 CU2 - Version
5.00.7958.1024.
A small number of system outages have occured recently on the Linux & Solaris systems. SCCM is one of several candidate causes.
One issue we have seen on these systems is high CPU usage by ccmexed.bin
The TOP command shows the process regulalry using more than 100% of a single CPU core.
The PRSTAT command shows a more resonable CPU usage accross all cores.
However, in both cases the process is using significantly more CPU resource than other systems processes - including SAP and Oracle.
Are there any known issues\reported bugs with high CPU usage on RHEL 5 & 6 and Solaris 10 x86?
I know CU3 for Unix\Linux has just been released and I will certainly be looking at applying that in the environment - more
expeditiously
if this is a recognised issue and fixed in CU3
Regards, ChrisHi Chris,
Yes, the latest Clients Clients Clients including bug fixes and added support for RHEL 7, CentOS 7, and Oracle Linux 7
Please apply the fix and see how it goes.

Premiere Pro CS6 CPU Usage is Low when Encoding
Hello
Im haveing some issues when encoding H.264, well not issues but my cpu is not being utlized to its full potencial.
u have a 3930K overclocked to 4.8Ghz, and when im encoding the cpu usage is rarely above 60% on some cores but most cores jump upp and down from 40% to 0%, my scratch disc is 2 Force 3 GT in Raid 0 so over 1000MBs read and write speed, there shuldnt be an issue there, have 32gb of 1866mhz ram, and 2 GTX 670 FTW GFX cards,
My encoding settings are:
Source: 1920x1080 (squarepixels) 60fps, Progressive (Uncompressed AVI)
Output: 1920x1080 (squarepixels) 30fps, Progressive VBR 2 pass, Target 50mbps, Max 51mbps
Are there any settings to how much power Premiere uses or?Have tried removing the one 670, there is no difference, the project files are stored on another sett of Force 3 GT discs, so im reading for one raid 0 and writing to another, have done loads of testing on the disks and their preformance both synthetic and real read and write tests, and they perform exeptional, i dont in a million miles see how conventional disks could help. they just arent the bottle neck, now the last thing you said im not shure what you are hinting at with tuned your system ? can you elaborate,.. Btw thanks for the fast response

100% CPU Usage in CS5.5 Premiere Pro during export/encoding
I am wondering why my CPU usage is so high during exporting of my videos. My counter shoots up to 100% as soon as I start and hovers at 95% throughout the whole process. This seems dangerous to me so I wanted to bring it up here as I haven't found anyone with this same issue on this website or google. Here are my system specs:
i5-2400 CPU @3.10GHz
6 GB of Ram
64 bit windows 7
Geforce 660 ti graphics card (2gb)
They aren't top of the line but I feel like it should be capable of encoding. I've cleaned my fans and tried using avi and h.264 formats which both led to the same issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to premiere pro so I'm sure I left some useful information out above."...the same results"
This means high CPU usage, right?
Correct
Are your exported media files ok?
I've only completed one because I was freaked out but yes they are fine.
I guess the thing I'm worried about is my temps going up really high because of the 100% usage. I thought that they were both entertwined as in high usage = high temps. I'll look for a temperature program to run while encoding and I'll monitor how high the temps get. You've given me hope here as I may have been making mountains out of mole hills. If the temperatures are high would you recommend more fans in my desktop? -
Macbook Air running extremely slow - kernel_task at 300% cpu usage
I purchased my Macbook Air roughly 15 months ago and it's performance has constantly been impressive since I purchased it - until roughly a fortnight ago. I came home from work one afternoon and it was running at a snails pace. I had recently upgraded to Yosemite though I'm unsure if this had anything to do with it. I had also recently installed FitBit software to sync to my new FitBit flex.
It has continued to run in this manner constantly since the problem began. It is ridiculously slow, every single request takes a very long time to respond. Logging in takes forever. When I click on an app to open it, the icon bounces for 30 seconds or more, and it's not a smooth bounce either, it's quite a jagged bounce!
I'm hoping someone is able to provide some advice, guidance or help. The laptop is no longer covered by the 12 month Manufacturer Warranty, and I did not purchase an Apple Care plan as no Apple product I've owned before has experienced issues like this.
This whole experience is killing me! I'm suspecting hardware failure and I'm just so sad that this could happen to the laptop I've loved so much since I bought it!
The problem:
The kernel_task process is constantly running at 300% or higher cpu usage, with Activity Monitor indicating the processor is being maxed out by a system task. Also, the laptop's fan is constantly running at full capacity - from the moment the laptop turns on, or wakes up.
What I think the problem might be:
As a result of many, many Google searches, it appears that this behaviour may be due to the Macbook Air thinking it is overheating - and I will clarify here that it certainly is not. It is cool to touch, always, when this problem occurs. (yet the fan is almost taking off!). As a result of the MacBook Air thinking it's overheating, it not only is running the fan at a very high RPM (confirmed with iStat), but it also is intentionally choking the system with 'simple requests' in attempt to cool the computer down. Apparently this is a built-in feature of OS X. The kernel has priority over user tasks, causing all user tasks to be granted a lower priority, causing the computer to run INCREDIBLY SLOW. Even as I'm typing this, I'm about two sentences ahead of what is showing on the screen!
Steps I have taken:
- Read widely across the internet with every possible relevant search term I can think of
- Downloaded iStat to see if any of the temperatures are too high (they all seemed fine..)
- Disabled Bluetooth and Wifi. (no change)
- Reset SMC (multiple times.., no change)
- Reset PRAM (multiple times.., no change)
- Drained the battery completely (2 or 3 times, no change)
- Install Windows 7 on BootCamp in attempt to bypass the issue (CPU usage was 100% constantly in Windows also)
- Uninstalled FitBit software (no change..)
- Uninstalled other software I did not need (no change..)
- Attempt to boot into Safe Mode / Recovery Mode (even in this modes, the same thing is happening)
- Repaired Disk Permissions
- Backed up all personal data
- Used the built-in Internet Recovery mode to format my Macintosh HD and re-install a fresh copy of OS X (Mountain Lion). (no change…)
- Re-upgrade to Yosemite (no change..)
I've downloaded EtreCheck and here is the output:
Problem description:
OS X is running incredibly slow. kernel_task process is constantly using 300% and upward CPU usage.
EtreCheck version: 2.1.5 (108)

Dec 20, 2014, 02:15:38 PM Self test - passedHi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
I couldn't be happier. -

Having Issues with High CPU Usage with fluxbox & pekwm
Greetings,
I have searched for this issue and it seems that something similar has happened in the past with an old xorg, and it seems that someone is having a similar issue that they can point to kde as being the culrpit. However in my case, this is a fresh install and is not using any kde libs. Please allow me to explain the issue.
The power supply on my main computer finally gave out, and being incredibly poor at the moment I can not yet replace it. So, I pull out an older computer that I had once set up for my kids, but took it away from them when they were abusing it. I always make backup dvds and such monthly so I didn't have to worry about any lose of data, however I desired to keep my larger hard drives from my main computer. After testing to ensure that the hard drives were fine, I did some minor surgery, and did a fresh install of arch linux onto my back up computer. Since I prefer pekwm, I installed pekwm as my wm of choice, and outfitted it quickly with mpd+sonata, firefox, pcmanfm, and tint2. Then I rebooted into my pekwm 'desktop'.
It was running sluggish. Firefox was easily maxing the cpu up and beyond 100% and it felt ten times worse than any heavy DE I used in the past. I checked to make sure I had the right video driver installed. As this computer runs a 64MB nVidia GeForce2 MX with TV out video card, I searched nvidia's page and the arch wiki, noting that the driver needed is nvidia-96xx. Well I had already suspected that during install, and thus had installed such driver. I double checked my xorg.config and it has the right driver listed.
So I checked out some lighter browsers. I tried both Midori and Iron (which is similar to Chrome but without google spyware or whatever). Well both run better than firefox, Midori being the lightest one, but Iron quickly being my favorite. Still, the problem remained. Moving windows caused cpu spikes, opening more than one tab, or more than one program caused cpu spikes and the computer to slow down and sputter, freezing at times.
So I tried out another wm, fluxbos, which is another of my favorites. Seemed somewhat better but only fractionally, which I consider odd because pekwm has always seemed snappier than fluxbox to me in the past. Running lxtask (still mouse dependent, sorry lol), I was able to take note of the following...
FLUXBOX
lxtask 6% CPU usage average
PCManFM 5% CPU Average
Fluxbox 1% to 2% cpu usage
gksu 3% cpu usage
pidgin 3% to 7% cpu usage
firefox up to 62% cpu usage
midori up to 38% cpu usage
iron up to 50% cpu usage
mpd 11% cpu uage
Xorg (with no window movement) 2% cpu usage
Xorg (moving windows around) up to 80% cpu usage
PEKWM
lxtask 6% CPU
pidgin 7% cpu
tint2 1% cpu
pekwm 1% to 5% cpu
pcmanfm 7% cpu
firefox up to 85% cpu
python 1% cpu
midori up to 38% cpu
iron up to 25% cpu (odd...)
Xorg (with no window movement) 1% cpu
Xorg (when moving windows around) up to 80% cpu
Both were using around 118 MB RAm and weren't yet touching swap. As I see it I am thinking xorg or video driver related, yet I already made sure that I had the correct video driver. Here's my Xorg.conf

So what I am wanting help with is finding the solution to the cpu usage so that I can use this computer at least until I can afford a new power supply or whatever. I am open to any good suggestions, though I must state I am not really interested in tiling wm's at the moment. I am just not a true minimalist.
Thanks in advance for any and all help. I understand that there is a lot of info in this post, but it is my hope that with this info the problem can be solved. If there is info I didn't provide that is needed, please let me know.also check that you have
session.screen0.opaqueMove false
in your .fluxbox/init this will probably help a bit if it is currently true,

I'm getting weird constant cpu usage from Xorg (100% of one of my cores). It started after a recent update of the system.
Here's my xorg.conf (a bit messy)

downgrading gnome-session to 2.24.1 (keeping xorg 1.5.3) seems to correct the high CPU usage problem. This tip comes from the gnome thread. It appears to break gnome screensaver, but I can live with that. Hardware: MSI VR340 laptop with Intel GM965 video.
Hope it helps.
Yes this solution works! Thx for the hint! For everybody who forgot how to downgrade packages here the solution:
I downgraded like this: sudo pacman -U gnome-session-2.24.3-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
Maybe you have another gnome-session in your pacman cache. More information about downgrading packages:

Still hope that xorg 1.6 will come soon to the official repository -
Question about CPU usage for video playback
I've asked a related question already on the Safari forum, but would like some clarification, please.
The speed of this iMac is 400 MHZ and whenever I go to YouTube or almost any other site that requires video I see that the CPU usage can peak way up at 80% or more. I have Flash 9 installed which has a minimum of 500 MHZ, so I get pretty choppy video, but that's not the issue here. I can live with that. I keep any other applications closed. I'm often running a small fan over the top of the iMac to help vent the buildup of heat. I can monitor the temperature at the Hard Drive and I suppose that gives me an idea, of sorts, about general temperature conditions inside.
The answer I got was that this kind of CPU usage could be detrimental to the processor as it builds up excessive heat and to keep this kind of video to a minimum.
My question is can anyone roughly suggest what a maximum time on YouTube, for example, would be, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, is 10 minutes too long? I have plenty of RAM at 768. Some guidelines?
Thanks.Hey WZZZ,
Thanks for the star and kind words.
I'm the de facto Mac guy at my kids' school and we have around 25 iMac Slot Loaders working there. You can imagine they get abused quite a bit. There are 10 running Garage Band in the Music Department. That puts a tremendous strain on the CPU and I'm actually surprised that they run it so well. My son had a 600 iMac running GarageBand, he was complaining that it was getting jumpy and when I looked at it he was running 10 unlocked tracks simultaneously! So now he has an eMac G4 800 and that of course runs a lot better.
So to sum up, with all the abuse of those machines in terms of the CPUs the problems I have with them have nothing to do with that. The problems have more to do with parts of the OS that they toss, headphone jacks abused, CDs jammed in the slots, and the like.
A couple of other related things. I've got Hardware Monitor, demo, installed and I think it reported it could only find the hard drive sensor, if I'm not mistaken - nothing else on this Mac with a sensor. Is that right?
I see references to CPU sensors on 400 iMacs but on the 400 I have here for repair Temperature Monitor reports no sensors. Perhaps there were different versions of the 400.
But very good to hear that the fan is a good idea for CRT related things. Should I keep the fan running-mostly for that hard core CRT stuff- even if the computer is sleeping and the room temp. is only around 62-64 F.? (We need to put on warm clothes to sit in front of this thing now, but worth it to keep this old machine happy).
On the one I did the fan pushed the airflow in the direction of the passive flow of the iMac - in at the bottom and out the grill by the handle.
One more question, more out of curiosity than anything else: If I move this small clip-on fan close to the case - right now it's about 3 feet away and the image is stable - the screen begins to flicker and flutter quite a lot. My theory is that that's happening not necessarily because of electro-magnetic interference from the fan motor, but rather, because the back of the tube is getting cooled unevenly. What do you think?
Well the classic failures that I see in the iMac are in this order:
1) Dielectric breakdown of the flyback transformers internal insulation. This is heat/age related and a common problem with CRTs in general.
2) Breakdown of high voltage electolytic capacitors and regular high voltage capacitors on the neck board and PAV supply.
3) Solder problems with the flyback itself. This is diagnosed by the upside down boot technique.
I used to repair these problems but now it's easier for me to swap the Firewire boards into working 350s. I've got 12 of those in the basement currently.

Hi everyone,
I'm having an issue with Word 2013 and I'm hoping someone can help. Seen as I got fleeced for my TechNet subscription this year (the price given on the invoice doubled when I called up to pay!) I’d very much like to see a speedy fix from the Microsofties
please! :D
Recently, I've found that Word will consistently exhibit high CPU utilisation, ~50% on a dual core second generation Core i5.
This continues, even when I’m not providing any input to or interacting with the Word window and even when the Word window is covered by other windows. Minimising Word causes its CPU usage to drop back down to zero.
The strange thing is that, so far, I’ve only observed this with a single document. I started writing this document at the start of this week and it’s been authored exclusively on Word 2013. In fact I’m the only one who’s editing it and I’ve only used a single
computer (and this one single install of Word 2013) to do so…
There’s nothing particularly unusual about this document, and a different but similar document which uses the same themes and features (in fact the theme for the second document was created from the first one) doesn’t appear to cause the same issues. Both
these documents are stored on SkyDrive, and are being edited directly from there.
Initially I tried the much recommended tweaks of disabling hardware graphics acceleration and sub-pixel positioning, however neither of these has had any effect.
I investigated a bit further using Sysinternals Process Monitor, and found that while Word is using a lot of CPU it’s actually looping very, very quickly polling for the existence of the registry key “HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics”.
This key doesn’t exist on my system, and a quick test I conducted where I created it just lead to Word looping polling for more non-existent registry keys.
My system is a HP Folio 13 running Windows 8 Pro x64 with Office 2013 (RTM, not Beta) 32 bit. Both Windows and Office are fully patched, as is everything else on the system.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
ChrisHello again,
After working on my problematic document some more, I believe I’ve found the cause of the issue.
@Microsofties – I think this one is either a bug or a dodgy OOTB template…
I noticed that the high CPU usage only seemed to occur when the document’s footer was displayed. Experimenting with some careful scrolling and zooming to hide footer (without actually using the “hide white-space” option) seemed to confirm this so I investigated
the footer a bit more.
My document was using the standard Word “Facet (Odd Page)” footer template with a couple of fields added to suit my needs, namely “Publish Date” and a page number.
The template seems to be structured such that the content of the footer is inside two nested text boxes (one inside the other). I also noticed previously that this footer template also appears to “jump” up each page and back down again as I scrolled.
So I deleted the footer and its text boxes, and recreated the same content, in the same position (using the standard paragraph alignment tools) by hand without the nested text boxes. This has, so far, fixed the issue!
I also noticed that the CPU usage dropped right down to idle the moment I deleted the nested text boxes.
Altogether, this leads me to conclude that the “Facet (Odd Page)” footer template in Word 2013 is the source of my issue. Specifically, I believe that the use of nested text boxes in this template causes Word’s interactions with the .Net 4.5 WPF to go a
bit nuts, as evidenced by the infinite loop of request for the non-existent “Avalon.Graphics” WPF registry key I mentioned previously.
It would be nice to see some feedback on this one, Microsoft people, if only to know if this is actually a general issue or is specific to my document!
Thanks, Chris -

at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.doFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:217)We use glassfish 3.1.1 as our application and the project_stage property is set to System_test. I would like to get suggestions on how should I investigate this further. Is this a normal behavior? Does glassfish provide an alternative for resolving blocked threads like some caching mechanism for resources etc?
Thanks in advanceNik wrote:
Even if it is legal, have you tried moving them out of there (just to pinpoint a possible bug since the stacktrace indicates a wait on a jar file)?Indeed. If that clears up the issue it is good information to put in a JSF bug report (which may even cascade to the Glassfish level).
Putting resources in a jar file is only really useful when you want to share those resources among different web applications, which should be a rare case. Even when it happens I would probably still choose to simply copy the resources so they are individually managed and you don't get unnecessary dependencies between applications. Just because something is technically possible doesn't make it a good idea. -
High CPU usage with Coherence 3.5.0 cluster node
We're noticing sustained high CPU usage on one of our Coherence nodes - this happens after running a job that pretty intensively interacts with the cache. The jobs complete, however we still see the Coherence process using approximately the equivalent of one core's worth of CPU. I took a couple of thread dumps about fifteen minutes apart, and the only noticeable differences are within the PacketListener1 and PacketListenerN threads - they're holding locks on different DatagramPacket instances, which suggests to be that this may be the piece of code that is looping.
There are two other cache nodes in this particular cluster - both of them on a different machine - and neither of them are exhibiting the same CPU utilization.
Environment:
Coherence 3.5.0

===== END OF THREAD DUMP ===============Charlie, Cameron,
Thanks for following up. To answer Cameron's question - yes, running top shows that it is this process using a significant amount of the CPU. I captured a JRA this morning setting nativesamples=true.
I see the following when I look at the Hot Methods - let me know if there is something else that would shed some more light on this issue.
