Premiere CC not liking HDV footage

This has happened on two different Macs running latest Premiere CC. Trying to play Apple HDV 1080i60 (1440x1080) footage and it just starts falling apart and becomes unplayable (see screens). It especially does it when trying to fast forward through footage. The original footage plays back fine in Quicktime AND in Premiere CS6. It also plays fine on CC with my beefy Mac Pro 10.8.4. It was an older Mac Pro (10.7) and Macbook Pro (10.7) that had issues - both using Mercury software acceleraton only. They play back other codecs just fine. Any ideas?

How exactly was the footage captured?

  • Importing HDV footage - seems you don't want to use Premiere (?)

    Hi everyone, and good morning.
Well, after many great posts, and lots of help here, I think I realize something....
If you own a camcorder that does HDV footage ( like my Canon H20 ), you must use something other than Premiere to import your original footage from the camcorder, if you wish to do any type of editing in Premiere later on.
If I understand what you have all told me that is.
For clarfication, last week, I imported my first HDV tape using Premiere, and the resulting file was a very high quality .mpeg file, however, it was not editable in Premiere at all. The audio and video were totally out of sync.
So, I then re-captured the original video from the camera into Pinnacle Studio 11, and this resulted in 2 files, a video and audio file. ( .wav and a .m2v file ). These files import into Premiere very well, and the audio and video is perfectly in sync from beginning to end.
With all this said, is there any point at all in keeping the original .mpeg file that I originally captured from the camcorder into Premiere ???
At this point, I don't see any advantage to this, but thought I would ask. I've read numerous posts that .mpeg is just not great for editing, etc, etc, so perhaps I should just delete this file, and keep going the route I'm now using ( capturing the original camcorder footage with Pinnacle Studio 11 ) (?? )
I also wonder, if one only owns Premiere, then what on earth do you do, if you have an HDV camcorder ? ( perhaps all of you that own one of these camcorders, capture the video footage from the camcorder, in a program other than Premiere ? )
Thanks for any info you may wish to give,
    Dave.

I am not so sure the problem is always restricted to CS3 captured footage. I convert from AVCHD to HDV (usually using Elecard, or Procoder etc) and find that if I stitch the output into a longish single HDV file then although that hdv file plays ok in a player, and is in sync - it loses sync when imported into PP CS3 - but is OK in other NLEs (well Vegas) Seems to me that CS3 cannot hold sync if (some) hdv clips are simply longish. Bad bug!- although seems it's being worked on according to similar threads

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • Premiere Pro CC HDV footage

I am having problems playing my HDV footage with CC but when I play it in CS6 it works fine....yes everything has been updated.

When playing the HDV footage, it freezes in the preview window and in the sequence, until I hit stop it will jump to that point in the clip. If I lay just the audio clip play it plays perfectly. The settings and loading is accurate to the project. Frame rate 29.97/ 1440x1080. I have imported these clips in CS6 which play flawlessly but not in CC.

  • Not possible with FCP6: HDV Footage and external TV (monitor) viewing ?

Hi all, I learned from another FCP6 forum when I'm working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire on an external monitor or TV, but ONLY as downconverted DV. This works fine but in a worse quality on my external TV. Is there really no possibility to view on an external TV via TRUE HDV via HDMI output ?

The MXO from Matrox might work OK (though it will only output HD via SDI or Component analog, no HDMI output) but I'd contact Matrox first about using a DVI adapter with the unit. It connects via a full sized DVI connection.
But quite frankly, you'd be very happy with the power of a MacPro. Especially working with HDV files. Rendering would be a lot faster, Motion and Color would also benefit from the added power of an 8 core machine... plus you can use that Kona 3 card. Best there is IMHO.
    Jerry
P.S. You are running professional software that really is desinged to be run on a professional machine like a Mac Pro...

  • Premiere 1.5.1 HDV capture questions ( Can't render, can't open in after effects )

I downloaded the patch which allowed Premiere Pro 1.5 to work with HDV footage. I hooked up my Canon XL1s and captured the footage. Everything seemed to be working fine. I moved into After Effects to begin doing some work  on a shot, and After Effects would not open the .avi, I would get an error that read "No such compressor exists" ( Or very close to it ). I thought perhaps AE would not open the file type so I went back into Premiere to render out a quicktime or something familiar. However, premiere pro would only allow me to export files as CineForm, which AE does no recognize. I don't understand what the problem is, why can't I export my captured footage from Premiere as a quicktime, or jpeg sequence, etc?
    Thank you.

    Thanks for the welcome, Eddy!
I should have mentioned the Media Encoder, sorry about that. I am using the Adobe Media Encoder, but for some reason I am only getting streaming options when I try to export a quicktime file. Not HD formats. Also, I tried an mpeg 2 export but windows media player played the  file without an image and after effects would not import it. I'm sure there is some obvious reason this is occuring, but I'm new to HD editing/compositing and I can't seem to get my head around it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Using Premiere Pro 6 - Capturing HDV .mpegs - These can't be seen by other programs like Compressor?

I'm using XHA1's using a Canon HV20 to capture via FW to my IMAC with 10.7. I'm using Premiere Pro 6 and have been using Plural Eyes to do audio sync for the past year.
About 6 months ago when I upgraded to Plural Eyes 3 (which they don't support video thumbnail preview for HDV) I noticed my MPEG files created in Premiere Pro could not be opened in Compressor to change to Apple Pro Res or do anything else with.
So, what I would like to know is there a way of capturing to some other file format than .mpeg using an HDV preset in Premiere Pro? I do weddings every weekend with 3 cameras doing hour long ceremonies. So, audio sync is real important and being able to see those thumbnails would be great.
Finally, when I export my XML to the desktop and bring it back into to Premiere Pro it "squeeshes" the HDV footage into 4:3 aspect ratio. Which I then create a new Sequence, select all, copy and paste and now I have 2 sequences to keep track of.
I realize these are not earth shattering - but they would sure save precious hours over a weeks time while doing many repetive actions. Thanks for any advice.

    I have same experience/problem:
    - PluralEyes does not show HDV thumbnails
    - Windows version crashes (I tryed initial version when WIN support was added)
    - Premiere still needs XML export-import, so stereo audio becomes double mono audio
I'm still using PluralEyes version 2, which is at least working:
    - use PluralEyes Connector to export from Premiere directly, that opens PE2 and asks you which timeline you want to sync
    - when done, exit PE and it will automatickly open Premiere, import project, and highlight added bins
    - grab highlighted bins and drag them to the "new folder" icon in project bin; that will create new bin and put all imported bins/clips in to that bin.
    - open synced project and copy all clips and paste them in original timeline (where unsorted clips vere).
OPTIONAL: I do replace all clips than with original clips from project bin, just to get stereo audio back. After I replace all clips I delete added bins/clips, because Premiere duplicate all (it will add them every time you re-import clips, instead of knowing it is already imported). So just to keep premiere project file smaller, I remove doubled clips.
If I need to sync just some files I use Premiere CC built in syncer. But PluralEyes does resolve harder to understand clips and Premiere solution is limited by how many clips is capable of syncing. And it does not work with several video/audio tracks, but only two. At least in my case, if I try to sync more than two clips it is grayed out.
Yes, I'm dissapointed by PluralEyes3, because this was my main reason I bought licence, Only to now using version 2.
    regards,
    MIHAEL

  • Premiere pro crashes with HDV

There have been a few posts on this already, but no one seems to have the solution,
Trying to capture HDV footage from premiere, but soon as tape starts "serious error" comes up and premiere crashes.
This has only become a problem today, ive captured with the exact same settings, camera, and cables before, and im about to try with a new DV tape as well, though atm still no luck
The only thing that has changed since then has been then has been premieres recent update. Not sure how to uninstall it though
Using final cut pro atm to capture and exporting it out, which is working just fine, so it seems to be an issue with premiere, not hardware.

If you think the update is the cause of the crash and you want to roll back?
    Deinstall Premiere.
    Install Premiere 6.0
    Then update manually to 6.03.

  • I need more help importing Z1 HDV footage

I'm trying to import HDV footage that was filed on a Z1
I tried to log and capture the footage from a tape reader with the HDV 1080i50 Easy Setup preset, but the screen was blank. I could see the footage on the tape reader screen but not in Final Cut.
I tried using different fire wires and different MACS but still no joy. As a final resort I tried a different MAC without changing the Easy Setup and leaving the project on the DV Pal preset, and it worked.
Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? If I captured the project using the DV Pal preset, wouldn't the footage be overly-compressed? Or Am I thinking about this all wrong? The footage is definitely HDV!
And while I'm here does anyone know of any material that I could 'study' to help me understand the setups/compressions etc. I find it really confusing!
    Thanks again
    Ian

Most likely the camera is set to downconvert to PAL and iLink is switched on.

  • Detecting bad frames in HDV footage

HI, i just installed the update, i was really looking forward to the bug fix to detect bad frames in HDV footage, this was the update to cs3 and cs4 had it to begin with -
    Improved handling of MPEG streams
The   Premiere Pro 3.2.0 update provides improved handling of MPEG files.   Errors in the MPEG stream can occur during recording due to tape   dropouts, record start/stop glitches, timecode breaks, and a variety of   other causes. Bad frames caused by these MPEG stream errors are now   better identified in 3.2.0 during file indexing and playback. Because   older MPEG index files and conformed audio files (those existing before   the 3.2.0 update) do not take advantage of the improved MPEG handling,   these files should be deleted to avoid compatibility issues.
am disapointed as this is what i have been looking forward to, i guess am still stuck with cs3.

    Hallo,
Ich denke ich bin hier richtig.
Frage inn Deutsch bitte um Hilfe.
    Adobe CS5. v.5.02
    PC  CPU- i7-930.
    P6X58Premium Asus Board.
    Win 7 Ultimat 64Bit
RoDo

  • Importing HDV Footage: System Hang After Indexing Finished

    Running Premiere CS6 with updates.
Generally solid application, but the first time I crashed it this year, was during import of HDV footage. After the footage indexes, and the thumbnail pic changes from 'media pending' to the actual footage frame, the mouse pointer freezes. The keyboard is frozen too. Can't even bring up the Task Manager in Windows 7 64. Is HDV even supported anymore? Maybe it's an invalid format? The file plays fine in VLC, so I don't think it's corrupted. But egads, I've never seen an app hang Windows 7 before!

I've confirmed that the hang does not happen with Canon HV20 footage, only Sony HVR-V1U footage. Any footage shot by that camera will hang not only Premiere, but the entire OS. I have to power down the machine to regain control.
What's so different about Sony's implementation of HDV that it is incompatible with Premiere?

  • Unable to capture Canon HDV footage with Sony v1u camera

I'm trying to capture hdv footage filmed with a canon video camera with my sony v1u.  My sony footage captures as it should, but the canon footage, although playing fine on the sony camera, will not capture to cs4.  Any suggestions?

Check all camera settings and make sure they match the original filming mode on the other camera... and veryify your PPro settings match
If that doesn't work, try http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm

  • Unable to Subclip HDV footage

I'm having trouble subclipping HDV footage. When I match frame the footage in the timeline the make subclip option is greyed out. Anybody have any idea why FCP is doing this? Thanks in advance
    Intel - FCP 6.0.4

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Capture problems with Canon HDV footage

Despite double checking all presets my FCP (5.1.4) capture window is not recognising HDV 1080i footage shot on the Canon XH A1. I'm only getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device" message. Firewire I'm using is working fine for DV footage. Any help VERY much appreciated !

Did you also check the settings on the camera?  Make sure it's set for proper output for the format you're trying to capture.
