Premiere CC v7.2 "generic import error" Sony xdcam 422 50mb / PDW F800

I'm receiving a "generic import error" when attempting to import Sony XDCAM footage in to Premiere Pro CC v7.2.0 (PC). The footage is in the original file structure transferred from a Sony XDCAM disc. The format is 1920x1080p, 29.97, 50mbps mpeg-2 long GOP (CBR). Shot with a Sony PDW F800 camera. It opens and plays fine with the Sony XDCAM viewer. I've tried importing the entire folder structure from PP media browser with no success. Not getting any thumbnails or previews from the files. PP will import the proxy files (mxf/mp4) but not the mpeg-2 HD media. Any insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Wil, got this figured out quite painlessly considering the train wreck that it was to begin with. The material consisted of 4 mxf discs all with sequentially numbered duplicate filenames from disc to disc… cameramen love to torture editors. Simply renaming the clips using the OS would not work so here’s what I did. Starting with Bridge I identified the HD material apart from the 8 audio files and 1 proxy file per clip by performing a file search using the letter (V), only the HD video material has a (V) in the filename. Next I copied only the video files to a work folder as to not alter the original disc structure, I did this for each mxf disc. Next critical step was to turn off all metadata logging in Bridge except the filename metadata, then I used the batch renaming function with 3 criteria: 1-seed each filename with the disc number, 2- retain original clip name, and 3-rename extension to mpg. I did this for each disc. Next step was to batch encode using AME. I processed each disc using the same codec as the original source material, MXF/OP1a, Sony XDCAM 50mb with smart rendering codec enabled. My system ripped through this process at amazing speed, it retained the original source clip time code and the quality appears to be unaltered from the original. The reason for turning off the metadata logging in Bridge was to strip off the mxf reference, AME would not process the files by simply renaming them using the OS. Total time to clean-up train wreck; 40 minutes.
BTW: I did not need the associated audio from these clips otherwise there would have been an extra step involved using premiere’s nesting feature as you had mentioned.
Happy Holidays.

  • Dropping media, generic import errors galore

I'm in the middle of an edit and when I came back to it the day after starting it, this is what greeted me. An annoyingly large image below.
It has dropped several media files and when I try to reimport them, replace them or link them, I get the ever so helpful "generic import error". Any suggestions? The files that I'm trying to use are in the same path as those that work and I'm using a RAID drive so I don't understand why this is a problem all of a sudden since the files seem to be perfectly intact and work everywhere else.
I'm using Creative Cloud, so the software is up to date and OS X is the latest version.

    OK.
Next, open a new, empty project.  Go to Edit>Preferences>Media...  Take note of where the Media Cache files are stored.  In the section below, Clean the Media Cache Database.  Close Premiere Pro and use Finder to go to the location previously noted for the Cache files.  Delete them.  Reopen Premiere Pro, and then your project.  Let it rebuild the cache.

  • Generic import error - Lion - CS5.5 - Will not import

Hi. I just upgraded to cs5.5 with Lion and now a number of my previous cs4 projects will not load various flavors of video. One major problem I discovered was that after installing Lion, both of my Quicktime folders in the user and system library were missing (the system library is hidden in Lion by default, so I revealed it). These folders hold various quictime components, which I recreated from a backup. Now Quictime will play all of the video, but PPro responds with a generic import error. I have included a number of screen shots below showing the video file and library info. (I wish bridge would interogate the files and provide this information, but I use video spec). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have a number of clients waiting for resolution. Thank you. -Jeff

Well, I solved the problem but I had to de-install Lion to do it, so I will not close out the thread until I update the post after the next Lion attempt.
Here are the steps I took.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard from the DVD. This erased everything on the HD.
    Update all system software.
    Download and install Quicktime 7.6.6
Register Quicktime Pro (Fortunately I had the old receipt) This drops in the AppleMPEG2Codec.component
Copy over the AppleHDVCodec.component to the user library.
    Install CS5.5
    Big smile.
One important change is that I did NOT install Final Cut this time.
I just copied in the missing AppleHDVCodec.component to the library.
I had this file in the correct folder post install of Lion, but for some reason PPro would not recognize it.
My best guess is some other file (maybe a framework file) in the library was corrupted or altered during the Lion Installation.
I also have not copied over all of the other codec.compents yet. I plan to drop these in as needed if new import errors occur.
Below are the screen shots of the new librarys.

  • Can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6

I can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6.01 HD. Am using Macbook Pro, 2 gig of RAM. This is my first time NOT using tape. I can copy the files off the memory card onto an external drive (to free up the card for pro crew's next day's shoot), but can't import either to FCP. Do I need to convert the files in some way before FCP can read them? Need to fix this problem fast as the crew are off to Nepal for 2 week shoot.

    Laura,
First, I'm assuming that you're referring to the XDCAM EX. You'll need to install the FCP 6.0.2 upgrade, which contains the XDCAM EX codecs.
Second, You'll need to install the PDZK-P1 Transfer Application, and use that to import your EX clips into FCP. I just noticed that there is a new version available, 2.5.1 which is labeled specifically for Tiger/Leopard. I haven't tested this version yet, and will report back on any stability issues. We're currently running version 2.1.1, without many issues.

  • CS4 Generic Import Error

I have a project that was exported using the project manager, all files, in Premiere CS3 on another workstation. The folder was copied to a portable HDD and copied onto one of my edit drives.  In this project were many, (400), PSD files with layers.
When I went to open the project, got a message that it needed to be converted to CS4. I am now getting a File Import Error and the Error Message, "The importer reported a generic error." and it is on every PSD file.
I really hope Adobe has a fix for this cause it's NOT ACCEPTABLE.  We've gone to great lengths  (and cost), to put Adobe suites on all of our workstations due to the belief that everything was 'compatible'.   Help me out here Adobe, I can't afford to take the time to re-import every PSD file and arrange the layers in the project.

Update....it was only tow files that were messing up. I hit ok, and skip, and somehow, the other files are imported correctly.
BUT, we discovered another problem where the CS3 didn't save raw video files to the folder when using the project manager to export the project. Preview files are o.k. but my video source files are missing.

  • Unable to link clips due to generic import error.

I am using Premiere Pro CC, up to date, on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.  After week's vacation opened large project to find all clips offline.  When I linked, they located fine but OK produce "the importer reported a generic error".  I know the clips are on their hard drives and have not changed position.  I am not sure of next step.  I have always been able to link before though have not used "locate" dialogue box.  Checking other projects reveals consistent problem with importer.

a couple of things to try would be deleting the Cache files and resetting the Preferences.

  • Constant "generic importer errors"

I've been plagued by constant error messages of "The importer reported a generic error." This happens with both XML files as well as media files. Sometimes this happens with files that are from the same camera roll as other files that work just fine.
I've uninstalled, used the cleanup tool and reinstalled, but it has been of no help.
I hope someone has some suggestions, because this causes epic delays in production.

  • Import error Sony A7 2 Lightroom V5.7 MacOS   = Update to 5.7.1 is not offered

    Hello all,
The raw file import of LR for MacOs V5.7 is not working => error "can't import ...."
In the the internet forums is advised that this is fixed with LR V5.7.1 which should be available since December. But my updater always says I have the newest version
Also the download link on your server is not down.
Is a bugfix version available and where can this be downloaded ??
    Best regards
    Karl-Heinz

"Check for updates" can sometimes be flaky - 5.7.1 has been indeed available for months.
Just download and install 5.7.1 straight from the internet - Google is your friend:
    Lightroom 5.7.1 is now available
(Note that as of this writing, the download links are broken).

  • Davinci Resolve 8.1.1 to Premiere CS5.5.2  import error

Importing an XML from Resolve to Premiere gives me a "File import error"  "The importer reported a generic error."
The XML from Resolve opens correctly in FCP7, and exporting that Resolve XML from FCP as an XML version 5 from FCP7 is correctly opened in Premiere.  Can anyone else verify they are getting the same result?
    thanks,

When I removed the offline clips in Premiere and re exported the XML file to Resolve, the resulting XML file from Resolve imported directly into Premiere, No import error, which is why I think having no offline media it might be a work around.
Both the XML file from Resolve and FCP to Premiere has not caused any crashes on my end.
I'm using FCP XML-Round-Trip from Resolve when rendering and using "render clip with unique filename"  As long as I render, then export the XML the conform works in Premiere, however the clip names in resolve reflect the original edit of the XML file from Premiere, and only in the file path is the corresponding Resolve renders.  I can not find a way to auto reconnect the resolve renders to the exported XML if moved to another suite with out manually doing every shot. Any thoughts?
On a positive note, doing the above steps for removing offline media first in Premiere (I have not tested your suggestion yet of deleting offline files in Resolve) has solved my handle slip problems.
I'd suggest closing both Premiere and Resolve, reopen, and send a sequence from Premiere to Resolve with no offline clips when conformed in Resolve, render and export XML and open directly in Premiere.  It's working for me now as long as Resolve exports a XML file without any offline clips, no more import errors or crashes.

  • What project setting should be used in the current Premiere Pro CC to import and edit xdcam XAVC UHD content?

I cannot find a setting that is available when importing XDCAM XAVC UHD (3840x2160) 422 progressive content, shot using sLOG3, nor any other form of XDCAM 4K/UHD. There is no option for XAVC that I can find, nor is there anything under XDCAM HD for 4K/UHD like there is for REDCAM. Is there a Plugin that I need? Or does Premiere Pro CC not yet truly support Sony XDCAM XAVC yet?
The Adobe posted compatibility list for PPro CC says that it will support almost all forms of XDCAM, including RAW 4k, but the reality of what is actually now available in PPro CC appears to be another thing. I hope I just missed something? But as always, Adobe leaves you guessing at these things.
BTW, I tried the REDCAM UHD 29.97 3840x2160 setting, and after the file is imported, PPro takes a dive. That was a shot in the dark of my own, and I expected it to fail. But now I have 600+GB of files that are in limbo. Thanks Adobe chat support for not being available during the hours listed on the support pages.

  • I am trying to import for Sony RAW .mxf files in AE. I get an error message, cannot be imported - this.mxf file is damages or unsupported.

I am on a PC. AE version 12.1.0.168. It is updated.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem. We are working on a feature film shot on Sony F55 in 4K RAW.

Thanks. Now it works in PP and AE.

First, your AE needs to be updated. The current version is 12.2.1.5
If that does not fix the problem let us know.
Second question, are you using the Sony import utility? If not, give that a try. Last question, can you open the files in Premiere Pro? I hope you are not trying to cut a feature film in After Effects.

I'm sorry for a MOST obvious couple of questions, but we need to get them out of the way...
Exactly HOW are you switching layers?  If by clicking with the mouse, exactly where on the layer panel are you clicking with the mouse?
