Premiere CS4 crushes at starting
Hi Guys!
I´m using Premiere CS4 since a couple of weeks without bigger problems (the programm just crushed occasionally) but now i´m facing a really big Problem.
Over night, it seemed like, my Premiere was destroyed. Whenever I open a saved project, after the project loaded, it immediately closes again. Without any crushing report or something like that. When I open a new project, all my settings and tools are gone. I can put them on the screen again, but after creating the first sequence, it crushes again.
I havent changed much since the last time it worked and now. (No new hardware, new software or something like that.)
I already re-installed Adobe.
It´s updated and all my drivers are too. I have enough memory space and a strong pc. (As I already said, i cut the last weeks without having this problem.)
I am under time pressure and so I´m kind of and hope that someone has a good advice for this special problem!

Premiere CS4 won't start "unexpectedly quit"
All I get is a message about the app unexpectedly quit?
Was working fine till today?
Only thing that changed is I downloaded and installed all the Adobe updates the other day.
What do I do?
Are there preferences to trash like with Photoshop?
Do I have to re-install Premiere or all of CS4???
Thanks.Wonder if it was fonts. I removed about 10 recent fonts I installed and now Premiere seems to start. Can anyone verify this might be the cause? Is Premiere touchy on fonts?
The only thing that led me to that is the first time I restarted I had some error on the screen about "Font Table" or something not being able to terminate. -

[OSX]Premiere Pro CS4 crashing on start
Hello,
I'm working for a training center and we got to use Premiere Pro CS4 for trainees. I'm encountering a problem on a fresh install by our techie of Premiere Pro and Soundbooth (part of the company's Master Collection) on our Leopard machine.
I get in both software an error about a "Registry 283-cpp" thingy :
Premiere Pro CS4: [Ironside/4.0/MediaCore/ASL/Foundation/Make/Mac/../../Src/DirectoryRegistry.cpp-283]
Soundbooth CS4: [/Gogo/main/MediaCore/ASL/Foundation/Make/Mac/../../Src/DirectoryRegistry.cpp-283]
Seems there's a problem. I get this error report from Mac OS:

Did anyone encounter this problem? How could it be solved? We need it for yesterday . Otherwise we'll have to use FCP
Thanks by advance,
Chloé DesoutterHaving this same problem crashes with DirectoryRegistry.cpp-283
On OSX 10.5.8
Works fine with another user on the same machine so must be conflicting with something, but I can't find what.
Same error with Premiere CS4 and CS5. Other CS4 apps run fine. Any ideas? -
My Premiere CS4 freezes when try to edit preferences/general settings/start new project
First, sorry for my english, i'm argentinian. I got this wired error every time i try to start a new project, click on "new project" tab, and it freezes with not even show me the list of formats, then i have to force to close program. The same when i change something on preferences, and hit ACEPT, frezees. The same when try to enter to GENERAL settings of a project. Tryed everithing, reset perferences file, re-install, once i unninstall it, try the clean utility and it tell's me that is no entry in the registry with an adobe program.

HEEEEELPP!hi, no, i don't have any capture card. And plugins, just magic bullet looks 3. I tryed to delete all plugins too before with no response. I'll try the saving location thing, then tell you how it goes. In the other hand, i always do everything like this, and suddenly this happens. Holly PC's.

Subject: My Premiere CS4 freezes when try to edit preferences/general settings/start new project
Do you have any capture cards in the computer? For example, Blackmagic, Aja, Matrox, CineForm, etc.
If so, it's software might be causing the problem. Go to "Programs And Features" in the Vista Control Panel to remove the software for the capture card. Restart the computer and then try again.
Did you install any plug-ins for Premiere?
If so, remove them and see if the problem goes away.
Also, where are you saving your projects? Try saving one to your Desktop and see if you still have the problem. If you don't, then it could be a problem with your save location.

Premiere CS4 to Encore CS4 Export Quality Problems
I recently purchased a non-linear editing machine with an RTX2 Matrox Card and CS4 Professional. After six or seven projects, I finally noticed that all my imported .avi files exported through Adobe Media Encoder and burned through Encore CS4 are not as crisp, sharp, or look like the original high quality SD footage after the DVD is burned like it always used to look in CS2. ( jumped from CS2 to CS4)
These DVDs were of plays, football, and basketball games. It seems that when the camera shoots a close up, the video looks fine but after you shoot from a distance, there is a considerable difference in the footage. ( alomost blurry) I just caught this and nobody has complained but I watched one of my older DVDs I produced with CS2 and it had no quality loss whatsoever. There is a night and day difference
For the sequences, I am using Matrox SD, NTSC, Standard, 720 x 486 and capturing with firewire through the Matrox card. The raw footage is beautiful. The Video Preview Option is NTSC Standard and the Codec is NTSC Matrox DV/DV Cam.
I can playback a timeline from the Matrox card and burn directly to a DVD burner and the footage is perfect, but when I export, I have chosen Microsoft .avi file, Matrox DV/DV Cam/ MPEG2, and MPEG2DVD.
I have even changed the sequences codec to Matrox MPEG-2 I-Frame and tried exporting using that out of Adobe Media Encoder and am getting the same results.
None of my customers have complained yet, but I definitely do not want to continue producing almost blurry DVDs.
I am using Adobe Premiere CS4 Version 4.1.0 and Encore CS4 Version 4.0.1.048 and Matrox Version 4.1.0.23
Can this problem be related to and eliminated by updating my CS4 Production Suite and my Matrox Software.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced this same issue and what solution they came up with or if anyone knew if the updates would correct this important issue. I just filmed a lengthy play that I have to author through Encore CS4 and I cannot release any more of my productions until this problem is solved. This is a big dollar production and I need some assistance on this matter as soon as possible. Thanks Jimi WhiteThanks for taking the time to help me out. I just purchased my non-linear with CS4 Production Suite and the Matrox RTX2. I have several projects that I am working on right now and I was advised by Adobe, Matrox, and my non-linear vendor, 1 Beyond, to finish those projects before performing updates.
I also found out that If I export using the MPEG2 8Mbps, it cleared up the video dramatically. We had to go through a number of export presets in order to find out what worked best in Encore. I am going to try to finish the project now and will advise on the results.
This is a basketball highlight DVD and that's when I noticed the problem. My other productions were photos to music, and non sporting events and I didn't notice any problems with those DVDs ( they actually looked decent. Worst part about it was, I finished the project once and burned 18 DVDs, and then reviewed one of them and found the problem. I have to start over and just eat the DVDs printed and all.
Thanks again, it was nice of you to get back to me.

Ok, i tried to read as much as i could, performance threads about Premiere Cs4...but couldn't help it.
So i upgraded to Production Premium Cs4 before 2 weeks...
I've noticed all the problems that were mentioned...what i can't understand is the LOW PERFOMANCE in export or preview
my system runs a QUAD 6600 with 8gbs RAM, NVIDIA 8800GT and XP64...
after effects runs fine in almost maximum CPU (if you adjust it in preferences), but premiere (that means and ABOBE MEDIA encoder) exports in 5-20% of the CPU...if you try to encode with TMPGEnc processes go much faster and cpu is quite high...
question 1) (yes i know i am dumb...)
exporting speed has to do with footage, type of media that is being exporting and GPU??????
2)is my system, just not enough???
3)Premiere CS4 cannot handle multicore anyway...and every user here has the same problems??????
Sometimes...i think that i will do BAD things in my PC when PREMIERE is SO SLOW and i am in such hurry...Someone...coould answer? before i start taking drugs????????????????
A Straight answer 1) ,2) ,3) would be really nice for my emotional condition...Roger thank you very much!
It is now starting to make sense. I have only run it once and not tried any other tricks yet (like trying to use the Source from the RAID array rather than from the C: drive)
Now rather than taking 130 seconds for encoding it is down to 25 seconds versus 8 seconds for CS3. I suspect that at least some of that is because they are using the C: drive for the source.
MPEG encoding has also a major improvement by using the rendered preview files and as matter of fact it reduced the MPEG encoding time from 75 seconds (CS3) to 57 seconds (CS4)! Maybe we will have to go back to suggesting rendering the timeline before any encoding.
One other plus for CS4 is that the rendering is much smarter in that any duplicate segments are rendered only one time.
Why do they hide these menus with such tiny hard to find icons? I had a similar problem finding a playback option for my second monitor. -
Premiere CS4 exporting to MPEG2, changes timeline??
I've been using Premiere CS4 to edit my videos. Once the video is complete I do a file > export > media to use Media Encoder to save the media in various formats, one of them being MPEG2. In the timeline for each video I have 3 seconds of black at the start and 10 seconds at the end. I just noticed today that when I export to MPEG2, the created MPG file has the black trimmed off both ends, and it apparently stretches the video to fill the full time length somehow. So if my show should fade to black at 28:00 normally (as it does on the timeline), with 10 seconds of black until 28:10, when I view the created MPG file the video start immediately instad of waiting 3 seconds, and it will fade out the video at 28:10 and not have my 10 seconds of trailing black. So it must be stretching the whole video to fill in that extra 10 seconds. It only does this with exporting to an MPEG2 file, the AVI and WMV files I export into using the same timeline are fine.
I had never noticed this before on the 20+ shows I've previously exported, I never even thought about going back and checking out the actual end time for the MPG versions because it was fine on other formats. Apparently this is something not isolated to this computer I'm using because I went back to my old laptop and did an export the same way on an old video and it did the same thing. I'm stumped.
Any help on how to be able to export to an MPEG2 file exactly what I have on the timeline like the other formats do would be appreciated.
Thanks.Hi Ann,
The sequence length is the same in Premiere as it is when I play it in media player. They both clock in at 28:10, but the exported mpg plays differently somehow. When I play it on the sequence my show fades to black at exactly 28:00, and then I have 10 seconds of black, that’s how I want it to be. When I play the exported mpg file in media player it doesn’t fade out the show until 28:10, and there’s no 10 seconds of black at the end, it just ends after the fade out. The software appears to be stretching the video to make 28:00 of video fit into a 28:10 length file, but since 10 seconds over 28 minutes isn’t that much it’s not noticeable when I watch it.
I just tried what you said to do… I took the exported MPG and pulled it back into Premiere and played it on the timeline, and it is playing it properly in there with the 10 sec of black at the end and timing it correctly. I don’t get it! It only shows up correct in Premiere, I’ve tried in both WMP and Real player and they’re doing the same thing. But my avi and wmv version exports all play properly in WMP. Very strange!
Thanks for your help.

Premiere CS4 Media Encoder AVIs and Encore Encoding Errors
For some reason, I'm having trouble creating DVD's in Encore from AVI's exported from Premiere CS4. When encoding starts, Encore immediately pops up with an "encoding error". I now, all of a sudden get this identical error on two of our systems.
Most of the time Encore works if I export an "MP2" file from the Premiere CS4 timeline.
Any of you guys having trouble with Encore CS4? To me it has been a lot more buggy and unreliable than any previous version. The program also seems sluggish on our Q6600 4gGB RAM computers! Kind of like the program is straining just to open its windows.
Another thing that is annoying. Earlier in the day, I exported a Flash Web video for a client's review. A few hours later I had to make a 1 hour and 46 minute DVD with chapters for a client that had to be Fed Ex'd overnight. It took forever to complete and I soon realized that Encore defaulted back to the last export...FLASH! cr@p. I would prefer that the program defaulted to standard DVD creation. After all it is Encore DVD.I'm having major problems with Media Encoder CS4.
When I try to create an AVI file (for example) from a section of my Premiere Pro CS4 timeline, the encoder opens, takes forever to load the project, and then, after I hit start queue button, it again takes forever to load the project in the small window at the bottom of the display.
Finally the "waiting" message in the queue list turns to an orange exclamation mark with the message that encoder "could not read from the source. PLease check if it has been moved or deleted." Which of course it has not been. THis happens even if I preview the section in advance in Premiere. material.
If at any point I hit the settings button it simply reloads the project -
Premiere CS4 - Encoding with AME ridiculously slow
Hello there.
After having read many threads on various forums, I have not come to a single hint as to why AME is encoding any type of video materal extremely slow. I'm sorry if this question has been asked many times on this forum, but maybe someone has come up with a working solution?
My computer specifications are:
Windows Vista 32bit (yes I know, upgrade is needed)
Intel Quad Core Q9000 @ 2 GHz
4 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9700M GT - 512mb
500GB sATA HDD @ 5400 rpm
This is a notebook. I use Premiere CS4 and AME4 with the most current updates (v4.1)
Here is what I usually do:
I export my project media from Premier to AME with the appropriate format and encoder settings, close Premiere and kill all background tasks. My RAM usage is now at around 1.4 GB (out of 3 GB!).
In this case, I'd use the built-in MPEG2 codec with PAL settings (720x576 - 25i - 8Mbit/sec), the source file is in MPEG4 @ 20Mbit and 10 minutes long. I started the encoding process and it was slowing down from 10 minutes initially to a frustrating render time of 60 minutes. Why?
I have used VirtualDub and TMPGEnc, both achieved, compared to AME, incredibly low render times, a bit higher than double realtime. When I use AME the same way, as encoder for an avi file only and not a Premiere project, it is losing by 6-7 times of the other programs render time.
Second scenario:
I have 20 seconds uncompressed avi material (600Mbit/sec) and like to convert it to MPEG4 with AME. MPEG4 settings are at 50Mbit, I-frames only, 50fps and progressive. I started the encoding again and at first, AME was rushing through 1/4th of the progress bar in 5 seconds, and then slowing down to an overall encoding time of 50 (!) minutes and it ended about 52 minutes later.
During this rendering I had the windows resourcemonitor (of the taskmanager) open and checked the access rate to my hard disk. For the entire duration of 50 minutes, AME read between 50 megabyte and 125 megabyte per second on the hard disk. The file itself was less than 2 GB large - what on earth could it read? Also, my RAM usage came close to 2,8 GB but never reached 3 GB or higher.
Does anyone have an idea or is it just that freeware programs are superior to a costly AME?I have already run that test about 4 hours prior to writing this thread. Now I'm not at this computer, but from top of my head the results were:
Total 180 (about)
Export Avi 38 (not entirely certain, could be up to 10 higher)
Encode MPEG 90 (not entirely certain, could be 20 lower or higher)
Render Time 7 (the only number I recall correctly)
I'm well aware my hard disk isn't fast - but why should VirtualDub be able to encode a 2gb uncompressed avi clip with a duration of 20 seconds to DivX in about a 1/3rd real time/8fps (using 50mbit, i-frames and 50fps and amazing quality) while AME takes 50 minutes (1/200th realtime) for the same file with the integrated MPEG4 encoder?
Now, I know that those are different codecs, yet their data reduction works on a similar base. From my point of view, there's not much that could explain such a high discrepancy of performance on the hardware side, other than AME just does not like my computer configuration. I know my computer is very capable to perform way better than that, just with about any other program but AME, and that is a royal pain.
Unfortunately, I am unable to install a second HDD in this notebook, because it is full. I do know it could perform better using a secondary HDD, but I have also encoded files with Adobe Premiere CS3, and that performed way better than CS4 on the same computer. -
Problem opening a Premiere cs3 project in Premiere cs4
i recently did a clean install on a new machine with adobe premiere cs4
i attempted to open the project in adobe cs4 that i created in adobe cs 3
( i confirmed that the project isnt corrupted as the same project plays fine on another machine that has cs3 running)
Here is what happens When i open the project in cs4 it goes through the stages below and keeps looping and indexing.
*first pass: i first see adobe indexing the project and there is a media pending display in the program display and on the time line the thumbnails have not been created where the edits are.
* second pass: adobe finishes the indexing and then i see adobe looping again to conforming the video again, there is still a media pending display in the program display but this time the thumbnails have appeared on the timeline and i see the subclips in the project bin.
* Adobe stops indexing but there is still the media pending display on the program display so then i grab the timeline slider to scroll throught the project and then the indexing process starts all over again in this endless loop.
The project is located on a local drive and i turned off indexing on the drive.
I also tried deleting the rendered and preview files from the cs3 copied project , hoping that
CS4 would recreate everything. and still no luck
Any specific steps that i can do to trouble shoot this problemWhen one Opens a CS3 Project in CS4, there is a lot of work that needs to be done. I'd Open the Project, and go get some coffee (decaf, so you will not loose your patience). Just let it do its thing with no input to the computer at all. Come back in 5 - 10 mins. and see if all have been completed. Be patient.
If you are actually getting a loop in the Conforming, Indexing and the rest - remember be patient - then close down and reboot. Try Importing the CS3 Project into a New Project in CS4 to see if things improve.
BTW did I mention being patient?
Good luck,

Premiere CS4 is only encoding half of the audio
Ok, I'm basically stuck here.
I export my sequence from Premiere CS4 to Media Encoder and the final encoded video has audio for the first half but then abruptly cuts out and there's only silence after that.
The audio works and sounds fine in the Premiere project. It is mainly audio that was recorded with the video clips but there are also some unlinked music tracks as well. The video clips are a mix of .WMV, .MOV, and .AVI and the audio music clips are .WAVs. I'm currently working on a PC.
I tried re-encoding, restarting the computer and then re-encoding, and nesting the sequence within a new sequence and then re-encoding. The problem still persists though.
This problem is especially confusing because this is the third and final video to be exported from the project and the first two videos exported and encoded perfectly fine without any audio problems. The first two videos also contained a similar mix of video and audio formats.
So, I'm really confused and frustrated with this issue. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Were you able to fix it? Any ideas, solutions, or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
-BenThanks for the message Hunt.
When I said that the audio cuts out at different times I was referring to exporting the same sequence with no editing. So, when the exact same sequence is exported multiple times the audio will cut out at different points for each exported video. This makes it really hard to pinpoint a specific clip.
Thanks for the ideas about where to look for the problem. I didn't really keyframe the audio at all but there were keyframes on some of the video clips. I was working with Effects a lot but mainly just for video color correction and transitions. I agree about there being a lot of nooks and crannies and it's pretty unfortunate that it has come to checking into all of those.
I agree that AME shouldn't be causing this problem out of "sheer meaness" but I am rather inclined to start referring to AME as the "Adobe Meaness Encoder", ha ha!
FIXED!! Ok, so I figured out a work around which is a little shoddy but seems to do the trick.
-Based on mickkeav's suggestion I updated AME with the 4.0.2 update. I don't know if this solved anything or not because I didn't do an export immediately after updating.
-I exported out the entire sound track from my final sequence as a .WAV and then replaced the original, problematic audio with that new .WAV file. This seemed to solve the problem because the sound now works fine and doesn't cut out at all. The audio still sounds as good as it did originally too.
An earlier, similar solution was to use Quicktime Pro to remove the existing, errored sound track from the video and then add the new and complete .WAV file but this increased the video's file size by 100 mb whereas encoding with the new .WAV track in AME did not increase the video file size at all.
Thanks for the help and hopefully nobody else runs into this problem!

How to achieve the distort motion effect ala Final Cut Pro in Premiere CS4?
Newbie here.
I have just recently started with video editing. In Final Cut Pro I have the option to distort a still image in the motion/effects panel. In premiere cs4 I only find the option to scale it up/down without the option to individually distort the four corners. Does anyone know how this can be done in premiere cs4?
The effect i am going for is the same as in Apples presentation of iPad. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/specialevent0110/
I have an presentation wich I need to insert all the slides from the powerpoint presentation in the video.
Any help would be appreciated. ( I have searched around for an solution, but without results)
Regards THere is a resource, that deserves a bookmark, the PrPro-Wiki. Plenty of great FAQ articles and tutorials.
I see the "Distort" part of the Effect in FCP, but the "Motion" aspect was throwing me. I kept thinking Posterize Time, and that is anything but what you were looking for. That's why I was going to head to Google for the FCP Help files, or similar.
Good luck,

Getting 16bit video into Premiere CS4
Bear with me, as I'm sure I am a super noob. I went and did a bad thing...I think. I told a non-profit that I would make a video for them to sell for charity. The video is going to be a combo of video, stills, etc and I went ahead and shot all videos with my Nikon D90 camera. Settings were apparently set to standard and then I went out and picked up Premiere CS4 to take the video to the next level. I come to find out the video was taken in 16bit NTSC format and the program wants a minimum of 32. Is there anything I can do to get the videos I have into the Premiere workspace to create my video? Is it possible to up-convert? I've read about converting to TIF files, but I am going to need the audio off the video as well. I have to think there is a way around this somehow.
If you have any input whatsoever, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm behind schedule as it is and this is only setting me back further. Really hoping there is a quick fix out there. *crosses fingers*I'm not even seeing MJPEG as an option when I start a new project. Does that mean I do not have a proper CODEC installed?
How does MPEG Streamclip stack up against the two you mentioned?
Thanks again!
