Premiere Cs4 handle CPU...performance...and idiot questions

Ok, i tried to read as much as i could, performance threads about Premiere Cs4...but couldn't help it.
So i upgraded to Production Premium Cs4 before 2 weeks...
I've noticed all the problems that were mentioned...what i can't understand is the LOW PERFOMANCE in export or preview
my system runs a QUAD 6600 with 8gbs RAM, NVIDIA 8800GT and XP64...
after effects runs fine in almost maximum CPU (if you adjust it in preferences), but premiere (that means and ABOBE MEDIA encoder) exports in 5-20% of the CPU...if you try to encode with TMPGEnc processes go much faster and cpu is quite high...
question 1) (yes i know i am dumb...)
exporting speed has to do with footage, type of media that is being exporting and GPU??????
2)is my system, just not enough???
3)Premiere CS4 cannot handle multicore anyway...and every user here has the same problems??????
Sometimes...i think that i will do BAD things in my PC when PREMIERE is SO SLOW and i am in such hurry...Someone...coould answer? before i start taking drugs????????????????
A Straight answer 1) ,2) ,3) would be really nice for my emotional condition...

Roger thank you very much!
It is now starting to make sense. I have only run it once and not tried any other tricks yet (like trying to use the Source from the RAID array rather than from the C: drive)
Now rather than taking 130 seconds for encoding it is down to 25 seconds versus 8 seconds for CS3. I suspect that at least some of that is because they are using the C: drive for the source.
MPEG encoding has also a major improvement by using the rendered preview files and as matter of fact it reduced the MPEG encoding time from 75 seconds (CS3) to 57 seconds (CS4)! Maybe we will have to go back to suggesting rendering the timeline before any encoding.
One other plus for CS4 is that the rendering is much smarter in that any duplicate segments are rendered only one time.
Why do they hide these menus with such tiny hard to find icons? I had a similar problem finding a playback option for my second monitor.

  • Premiere CS4 Media Encoder AVIs and Encore Encoding Errors

For some reason, I'm having trouble creating DVD's in Encore from AVI's exported from Premiere CS4. When encoding starts, Encore immediately pops up with an "encoding error". I now, all of a sudden get this identical error on two of our systems.
Most of the time Encore works if I export an "MP2" file from the Premiere CS4 timeline.
Any of you guys having trouble with Encore CS4? To me it has been a lot more buggy and unreliable than any previous version. The program also seems sluggish on our Q6600 4gGB RAM computers! Kind of like the program is straining just to open its windows.
Another thing that is annoying. Earlier in the day, I exported a Flash Web video for a client's review. A few hours later I had to make a 1 hour and 46 minute DVD with chapters for a client that had to be Fed Ex'd overnight. It took forever to complete and I soon realized that Encore defaulted back to the last export...FLASH! cr@p. I would prefer that the program defaulted to standard DVD creation. After all it is Encore DVD.

I'm having major problems with Media Encoder CS4.
When I try to create an AVI file (for example) from a section of my Premiere Pro CS4 timeline, the encoder opens, takes forever to load the project, and then, after I hit start queue button, it again takes forever to load the project in the small window at the bottom of the display.
Finally the "waiting" message in the queue list turns to an orange exclamation mark with the message that encoder "could not read from the source. PLease check if it has been moved or deleted." Which of course it has not been.  THis happens even if I preview the section in advance in Premiere.  material.
If at any point I hit the settings button it simply reloads the project

  • Questions on Premiere CS4 4.2.1 and Media Encoder 4.2.0.006

What I am trying to do is take a single long captured file and break it into individual clip files.   I know I could have used timecode based scene selection when importing to break up the clips into individual files, but the timecode was messed up and capturing to one long file was the only option.
Question 1) How, if possible, can I export mutiple clips on the timeline to ME at one time.  It just seems silly to have to move the work area start/end points for each clip, export it, and then move the work area start/end points to the next clip and export and so on for, say, 50 clips on the timeline.  With clips the start/end points are obvious; the start of the clip and the end of the clip.  And a simple Clip 1, Clip 2, Clip 3, Clip 4... naming convention would be fine.   Is there a way to do this?  Or even just draging and dropping a clip into ME would at least save me the time of moving the work area around (which, again, seems repetative since the whole clip is being exported).
Also, once I have manually exported, say, 20 clips into ME, it is taking about 5 minutes (after it indicates it is encoding) to actually start encoding.  Once the progress bar begins to show the clip is encoding is goes quickly and I get the green check mark.  But then the next clip says encoding and it again takes about 5 minutes for the progress bar start to show encoding is occuring.  So to encode 20 clips (ranging from 10 seconds to maybe a minute long each) it takes up to 2 hours.  These are simple DV captures being exported to .AVI clip just to break them into individual clip files, so no transcoding or scaling or effects are involved.
Question 2)  Are there any settings that I may have/have not set that can speed up the process?  Is this normal encoding speed?

  • Infoset - Performance and Design Question .

    Hello BW Gurus,
I have a question regarding the infoset.
We have a backlog report designed as follows:
sd_c03 - with around 125 chracteristics and kf's - daily load will have around 10 K records at a time.
custome cube - say - zcust01 with around 50 characters and KF's.- daily full load aroun 15 K records.
    My question:
1.We have infoset ontop of this 2 cubes for reporting. Can we use infoset for reporting .I used infoset for master data and DSO reporting. Do you guys see any performance issue with using the infoset instead of multiprovider. Is there any alternative instead of reporting from infoset.
2.Also I executed the  SAP_INFOCUBE_DESIGNS program for the above cube and some dimesions are more then 25% like 58%, 75%,even 102%. So this has to be fixed for sure. Is it correct.if we don't change the design then what will be the consequences.
Please advise. We are in the development and the objects are not yet moved to production yet.Again thanks for your help in advance.

    Hi......
1.We have infoset ontop of this 2 cubes for reporting. Can we use infoset for reporting .I used infoset for master data and DSO reporting. Do you guys see any performance issue with using the infoset instead of multiprovider. Is there any alternative instead of reporting from infoset
Multiproviders are a great tool that can be used freely to "combine" data without adding much overhead to the system. You may need to combine data of different applications (like Plan and Actual). Another good use is from a data modeling point of view...you can enable "partitioning" of the data by using separate cubes for separate years of data. This way the cube are more manageable, and with an InfoProvider on top the data can be combined for reports if reqd (instead of having one huge cube with all the data).
Also using a multiprovider as an 'umbrella' infoprovider, you can easily make changes to underlying InfoProviders with minimum imapct to the queries.
You should go for multi-provider when the requirement is to report on combined data coming from different infoproviders.
Multi-providers combines data using union operation, that means all values of underlying infoproviders are taken into consideration. On ther other hand, Infoset works on the principle of join. Join forms the intersection and only the common data from underlying infoprovider are considerd..............In terms of performance infoset is better since it fetch less number of records.........
    Check this .........

If Dimensions are more it effects query performance.........its better to change the design........
    Hope this helps........

  • Groupwise 8 on Server 2008R2 SP1 Performance and Defrag Questions

I am running GroupWise 8.0.2 on an HP DL360G G7 with 24 GB of RAM and Dual Xeon X5650 processors under Server 2008 R2 Sp1. Post Office is using roughly 562 GB of an 819 GB Disk located on an HP p2000 g3 SAS connected enclosure comprised of 12 x 146 GB (15k rpm) SAS disks in a RAID 10 configuration. Typically never more than 700 users connected to the Post Office at any time. I am experiencing client slowness at regular intervals. Roughly every three weeks. The solution tends to be to restart the server and give it a fresh start, which holds for a while.
    Concerns.
    1. When the server restarts I see minimal memory utilization maybe 1.5 GB within half an hour the Used memory climbs a bit to about 2GB but free memory is quickly pre-allocated to standby memory. Within about 2 hours the Free memory is all consumed and I have about 20+ GB of Standby Memory. Running RAMMap indicates that the memory is being used by Metafile and Mapped File, Which tells me that the Post Offices files are being indexed and cached into RAM. Then after a couple weeks go by the amount of active RAM exceeds 8GB (still mostly Metafile, not so much Mapped File). And standby RAM still consumes the remaining RAM between Metafile and Mapped file, leaving no free memory. Typically once I reach about 8GB of memory actively used by the system (mostly Metafile), it's time for performance to drop for the clients.
Also, I'm seeing increases in Disk Queue Length for the Post Office Volume. Typically below 2 rarely as high as 5,
I suspect my best solution is to start a regular defrag process as my volume is now 29% defragmented [yeah NTFS :( ]
    Question:
I am concerned a defrag could take as much if not longer than 10 hours. Which is too long for the agents to be down. So I was wondering if anyone had used DiskKeeper or alternative 3rd party Defrag utilities that might be able to defrag open files in the background, or if anyone had run defrag with the agents running to get the defragable files, then shut down the agents for a second pass which should be considerably shorter. Any advice that can be offered, or other suggestions for my described issue, would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You!

    A) Updating to latest code may assist as this could also be a memory fragmentation type
issue or such that has been fixed
    B) Perhaps even more RAM might help. How much space do the ofuser/*.db and ofmsg/*.db files
take up? The more mail flows, the more of those DB file content are held in memory. A few
versions ago, you tended to need as much RAM as the total of the DB files, and while those
days are gladly past, it is still a good number to watch out for.
    C) Explore Caching mode for at least some of the users as that significantly reduces the
    load on a server.
    > I suspect my best solution is to start a regular defrag process as my volume is now

Still way better than old FAT ;)
This is one of the reasons why GroupWise runs better on Linux with either EXT3 or NSS
volume types, and is why SLES is provided along with your GroupWise license.
As for running Defragments, even running it for just a few hours a week will gradually
help, especially if you can fit in one big burst near the beginning. So if you can automate
the process of shut down agents, run defrag for X hours and then shut it down, then restart
the agents, you may clear this all up. Just having the agents down an hour a week might
clear the memory usage issue for you.
I would be very hesitant to run any defrag on open database files of any email system
unless the defrag tool knew explicitly about that email system. But a smart defragger that
can keep the *.db files in their own (fastest) section of the drive and the rest off to the
side would go a long way to making the defragmentation process much more efficient.
I haven't directly run a GroupWise system on any flavor of Windows, since OS/2, so this is
more a combination of all my platform knowledge, but I hope it gets you closer to a smooth
running system. And if the other GW on Windows admins can pipe in, all the better.

  • Performance and Compatability questions

    Hi everybody,
I'm hoping no one minds me asking these basic questions.
These past few years I've been using my a linksys WRT54GS (I'm pretty sure that's it) and it has been cutting out almost non-stop as of recently, almost every 15 minutes or less (which tends to be annoying). So I decided to start looking into new routers, and I thought that perhaps the Airport Extreme might be a good alternative.
My first question is, my family is mixed between MACs and PCs. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with using both systems on the router, and if they have had any major problems because of it (cutting out, or not getting signals at all)? But the other thing is, I'm usually in the basement, with the linksys on the first floor, which comes to roughly 70 feet away.
My next question is, that the MACs in my house are first gen. Intel based MACs, so I don't believe any of them have wireless-n support (I think you need Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, which ours are not), will that cause any problem with the wireless links, I had read that routers with wireless-n have to be backwards compatible, but I don't know i thats true or not, so would our MACs be able to connect?
The final question I have, is will the airport extreme work with a PS3? It can pick up the linksys router (when the router isn't crashing, which is rare), but is it compatible with it as well?
I've read some reviews and it seems to get pretty good ratings, but I figured I'd ask my specific questions before making a purchase.
    Thanks.

My first question is, my family is mixed between MACs and PCs. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with using both systems on the router, and if they have had any major problems because of it (cutting out, or not getting signals at all)?
Of course everyones situation is different, but I currently have no issues connecting both Macs and PCs to my 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). I recently replaced a Linksys 802.11a/g wireless access point with the AEBSn. I left it in its default radio mode, which is "802.11n (b/g compatible)" and my Macs & PCs are a mix of 802.11n and g devices.
But the other thing is, I'm usually in the basement, with the linksys on the first floor, which comes to roughly 70 feet away.
The issue here is really wireless signal strength and the affects of Wi-Fi interference, specifically building material which may make it difficult to get a clean signal through ... so it will affect any manufacturer's router, not just the AirPorts. One test is to use a free utility, like iStumbler to measure the signal strength of your current router from the location in the basement. Any new router may perform as poorly if this signal level is very low.
My next question is, that the MACs in my house are first gen. Intel based MACs, so I don't believe any of them have wireless-n support (I think you need Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, which ours are not), will that cause any problem with the wireless links,
No, the AEBSn will support 802.11a/b/g/n clients.
The final question I have, is will the airport extreme work with a PS3?
The PS3 has built-in 802.11g so it should be compatible as well.

  • Premiere CS4 is only encoding half of the audio

    Ok, I'm basically stuck here.
I export my sequence from Premiere CS4 to Media Encoder and the final encoded video has audio for the first half but then abruptly cuts out and there's only silence after that.
The audio works and sounds fine in the Premiere project. It is mainly audio that was recorded with the video clips but there are also some unlinked music tracks as well. The video clips are a mix of .WMV, .MOV, and .AVI and the audio music clips are .WAVs. I'm currently working on a PC.
I tried re-encoding, restarting the computer and then re-encoding, and nesting the sequence within a new sequence and then re-encoding. The problem still persists though.
This problem is especially confusing because this is the third and final video to be exported from the project and the first two videos exported and encoded perfectly fine without any audio problems. The first two videos also contained a similar mix of video and audio formats.
So, I'm really confused and frustrated with this issue. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Were you able to fix it? Any ideas, solutions, or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    -Ben

    Thanks for the message Hunt.
When I said that the audio cuts out at different times I was referring to exporting the same sequence with no editing. So, when the exact same sequence is exported multiple times the audio will cut out at different points for each exported video. This makes it really hard to pinpoint a specific clip.
Thanks for the ideas about where to look for the problem. I didn't really keyframe the audio at all but there were keyframes on some of the video clips. I was working with Effects a lot but mainly just for video color correction and transitions. I agree about there being a lot of nooks and crannies and it's pretty unfortunate that it has come to checking into all of those.
I agree that AME shouldn't be causing this problem out of "sheer meaness" but I am rather inclined to start referring to AME as the "Adobe Meaness Encoder", ha ha!
FIXED!! Ok, so I figured out a work around which is a little shoddy but seems to do the trick.
-Based on mickkeav's suggestion I updated AME with the 4.0.2 update. I don't know if this solved anything or not because I didn't do an export immediately after updating.
-I exported out the entire sound track from my final sequence as a .WAV and then replaced the original, problematic audio with that new .WAV file. This seemed to solve the problem because the sound now works fine and doesn't cut out at all. The audio still sounds as good as it did originally too.
An earlier, similar solution was to use Quicktime Pro to remove the existing, errored sound track from the video and then add the new and complete .WAV file but this increased the video's file size by 100 mb whereas encoding with the new .WAV track in AME did not increase the video file size at all.
Thanks for the help and hopefully nobody else runs into this problem!

  • CS4 using a Mac and want to play video using windows media player

Hi I am having issues with file types to play video back using Windows media player.
I am producing video using Premiere CS4 on a Mac and I need to know what format to use to have the files play in windows media player as .mp4 is not compatable with wm player.
    Thanks

I have Windows Media Player installed on my PC workstation and I do remember installing a codec so that MP4 files could play in WMPlayer 11 on Windows Vista 64-bit (should work on 32-bit also)
look near the bottom section of this link for further information.  The codec is called DirectShow
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992#34
Otherwise if you're posting videos on a webpage for example in the mp4 format use the Quicktime html wrapper so that people using Mac's can also view your videos that are encoded for PC's.  If you encode in wmv format (Windows Media Video) then provide a link to the "Flip4Mac" application that can use Quicktime on the Mac to play Windows Media Files.  I think you can find it on www.mactopia.com .

  • How to monitor CPU usage and performance on a Hyper-V server with several VM's

I have a server that is running Windows 2008 64 bit Hyper-V, with 8 gigs of RAM and Intel Xeon X3440 @ 2.53 Ghz, which gives me 8 logical cores in the performance monitor on the host system.
I have set up three Virtual Machines, all running Windows 2008 32 bit.
    Build server, running Team City
    Staging server
SQL Server, running SQL Server 2005
I have some troubles with the setup in that the host monitor remains responsive at all times, even though the VM's are seemingly working at 100% cpu and are very sluggish and unresponsive. (I have asked a separate question about that.)
So the question here is: What is the best way to monitor how the physical CPU's are actually utilized? The reason I am asking is that I am being told that i cannot reliably use the task manager to monitor CPU usage in a VM.

First, you have to remember that in Hyper-V that the "host" is called a parent partition and it really just like a virtualized guest with special permissions and roles. Just like any other child/guest, when you open up Task Manager, you can not see the CPU
usage of the other children on the server.
Ben Armstrong has a good explanation of this here:http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/02/28/hyper-v-virtual-machine-cpu-usage-and-task-manager.aspx
To summarize his post, you need to check three things to get an accurate picture of CPU utilization:
View the CPU usage on each guest - this is available through Hyper-V Manager or Performance Monitor.
CPU usage due to context switching - this is the perfmon counter called % Hypervisor Run Timeunder Hyper-V Hypervisor Virtual Processor
Child partition worker process - vmwp.exe running on the parent partition (1 per child). This handles Hyper-V operations like saving
    state.

  • Jerky Playback Premiere CS4 and Win 7?

    Hey
I tried scanning through a bunch of posts to see if anyone else was getting a similiar issue, but couldn't find an answer.
I recently just upgraded my system :
    Windows 7 64bit
    Adobe CS4 suite
    i7 920 processor
    Asus P6T SE mobo
    6gigs of RAM
    ATI Radeon 4800hd graphics card
250gig 7200rpm OS and Prog Drive
    640gig video Drive
    300gig Scratch Drive
    Fresh Install, not an upgrade.
Did all the win 7 and premiere updates and the ATI updates.
My problem is I have loaded up a project that I originally edited in CS3 premiere, loaded it into CS4, let everything load and index.
My playback is pretty jerky. My new system is way faster then my last setup and yet it is running very very poor.
The footage in question is DV footage. shot on DVX100b (24pa) I made sure and checked that CS4 imported it into a proper sequence and everything seems to be lined up properlly.
    Am I doing something wrong?
I checked some HDV footage that wasnt playing on my previous set up, which now playsback in a premiere timeline on current setup.
Are there any codecs that I should download? I dont want to rape the system with random codecs and crap.
any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Abes

Thanks everyone for pitching in. I didnt reply sooner because my deadline was
pressing hard. Finally managed to create output with CS4
. Also found that the reason my old PP1.5 was crashing was because I was trying to load a project that had already been saved out by me in CS4 What an idiot LOL I put it down to pressure.
But, on to the meat of the issue. First, in answer to an earlier question, yes once i have rendered a preview my monitor scrubs and plays properly however, Its totaly counter intuative to the way one edits a movie. the whole pre-rendering twaddle interferes with the creative process in my opinion. In PP1.5 even if sometimes a little scratchy a simple cross or additive dissolve would preview perfectly fine. This meant that the software didnt encroach upon what should be a transparent to the editor process. I come from 16 and 35mm film and video as a background and of course this stuff has come a long way since then, Im talking 1969 by the way.
But surely in so many ways PP CS4 is almost a monster step backwards.
If basic footage needs pre-rendering to work well in the time line, why isnt that an option at import time ?  Then at least dissolves and the like would be the only thing the processors need to worry about if the basic image blitting to screen has been taken care of by what I imagine is some kind of proxy.
OK thats my 4 penneth as they say in my mother blighty.

  • Clip notes with reader 9 and premiere cs4

After upgrading  reader to version 9 clip notes no longer works from Premiere CS3. It does work with premiere CS4 but a modification to reader by the reviewer is required to view the clip notes. Otherwise the video play/rewind etc buttons will be missing. This modification is detailed here www.alserver.co.uk/clipnotesreadme.pdf.
I have discovered this after many hours of trial and error and have posted the workaround here for anyone else with the same problem. Adobe support have been as much use as a chocolate tea pot! why do they ruin such great feature of premiere.
If anyone knows of a better workaround then please advise.

...real-time playback works fine in other high-load editing programs, as in the 2-series version of Avid Media Composer (which, by the way, played back just fine on my GeForce card and CPU/RAM configuration.)  I wanted to go to Premiere because of my other CS programs.  That said, I'd like to take a different approach other than simply throwing money and horsepower at a problem that might simply be a configuration issue.
    Thanks!

    stephanies
If 64 bit, while 9 will be a 32 bit application with the limitations of a 32 bit application on 64 bit system, 13 will be a 64 bit application which translates into more computer resources available to 13.
Elements Organizer 9 will not integrate with Elements Organizer 13 although you can convert the 9 catalog in Elements Organizer 13. And there is a marked difference in the workspace between the two versions. Principles tend to stay the same, but features can be moved, changed, or discontinued.
I would have expected Premiere Elements 9/9.0.1 to have worked in your computer environment. Since it did not, I would strongly suggest that you look at the free 30 days tryout of Premiere Elements 13/13.1 in your computer environment to assure the compatibility of it with your computer environment and project goals.

  • How to Mix Export and Burn  5.1 Surround in Premiere CS4

Ok I'm attempting my first 5.1 mix in Premiere CS4.  I have a couple of basic questions about mixing and exporting in 5.1.
I have created my 5.1 master sequence in premiere and have broken out my 5.1 track to 6 mono audio files.  Right now they are all .wma with a very high bitrate because that's the only format I was able to rip off the Blu-ray disc I'm experimenting with.  I have also learned to change my audio hardware to run off of my Matrox Driver to utilize my hardware for my matrox axio LE.  The end result I'm trying to produce is a 720p 23.967fps H.264 Blu-ray disc with 5.1 sound.
    Questions:
Should I use wma files for audio or something else?  At first I noticed a little bit of a lag in performace before switching my audio hardware to the Matrox Driver.
Do I have to use Dolby Surcode upon export to burn in Encore?  When I first upgraded to premiere CS4 I  used my 3 free encodes while testing our the program, is there any way to get them back?
When importing the Audio into Encore is there anything special I need to do or can I just drop the Dolby 5.1 track onto the timeline as I would normally with at stereo track?
