Premiere CS4 is an insult to Mac users

Adobe's lack of compatability with avchd and Quicktime is a joke.
Do they really think they can get away with a product that doesn't work?
I don't need to hear from the few Adobe and Windows apologists around here who can only state it is Apple's fault or "get a Windows box".
None of the intermediate codecs work in the timeline without stuttering. Mov. files whether they are DNxHD or ProRes or Cineform. They bring Premiere to it's knees on a Mac. AvcHD can't even sit in the timeline for 2 minutes without crashing. This is on 3.0ghz MacPro with 8gigs of memory.
Remember what happened a few years ago Adobe?
Apple: We're offering you several technologies that will make premiere much better. Please Use them.
Adobe: Microsoft doesn't offer these. We work to give parity to our software releases so your efforts don't help us
Apple: Well then would you at least give performance parity with the WIndows version?
Adobe: No real reason to. Windows is the future. Live with what you got.
Apple: Nearly half of your market is Macintosh users. If you don't do this you'll be sorry.
Adobe: How could we be sorry. We're the kings of video. Which current software company can change this?
Apple: We warned you... *introducing final cut pro*
Adobe: Holy crap... we just lost our Mac customers
Apple: Again... we warned you... many times.
Adobe: Holy crap, we're now starting to lose Windows customers to Final cut pro on Macintosh!!!
Apple: You only have yourselves to blame
Adobe: Ok... we're sorry. Here's the new Premiere you requested
Problem is ... it's a half baked effort that isn't going to fly. I should have known better than to switch to Premiere/AE

I agree that better support for intermediate codecs would be a nice addition to PPro. In fact, it would be great if Adobe included one, as they briefly did with Cineform. Nonetheless, PPro's support for native HD formats is superior to FCP. I edit primary XDCAM EX footage on the Mac and it's great working with the original files and taking advantage of dynamic link with AE (which never left the Mac). If you prefer using intermediate codecs then I would go with FCS. Hopefully Adobe will improve support for 3rd party codecs in future.

  • Premiere CS4 export Mpeg2 setting

i use Premiere CS4 and i am a leisure user.
    1. when i export mpeg2, the video is 800m file sze
if i export to DVD, the files (video + audio) are 240m
as i know DVD is mpeg2, what's wrong with the setting on huge file size difference?
       i need a small size mpeg2 file.
    2. can i edit vob directly?  it is very time-consuming to convert vob to avi and then edit.
    3. when i used premiere pro before, it has function to export DVD directly at premiere.
but now CS4 need to revert to Encore.  Any fast track?
    4. i alway have corrupted cache when importing avi files.  i need to remove cache and import again until it is ok
any way i can do it better or less error.
    5.  any fast method to simply cut the movie, not do any change of resolution, codec....
Thanks a lot in advance.  i have lots of question.

Unfortunately, you've posted to the Premiere, and not the Premiere Pro forum. This is for a program that predates the "Pro" designation. Maybe the MOD's will move this for you, so you'll get more traffic.
Now, let's see if I can address some of your questions:
As for the MPEG-2, it is most likely that the larger file has a much higher bit-rate. What are the settings between your Exported MPEG-2 and those in the Transcoded file? That is the common difference.
As for editing .VOB's, if they are 100% DVD-compliant (very important), then CS4.1 can Import and edit. These still have the MPEG-2 compression, but should work fine. If those .VOB's were created by Encore, then changes are almost 100% certain, that you can edit them. If not, then the odds go down, and quickly. See this ARTICLE on .VOB's.
Export to DVD directly, went away with CS3. The included Encore is much, much better, and is the way to go. There is also a forum for it.
I've never had a corrupted cache, and cannot help here.
If you have DV-AVI Type II material as source, you can edit until the cows come home, and Export to DV-AVI Type II with no noticable degredation. Other formats/COCE's not so much. Here, it just depends.
    Good luck,

  • Slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro

I am having a similar slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro, but I don't have bloated prproj file size.
Here is what I am working with:
Mac Pro intel quad core 2.8ghz
    OSX 10.6.7 Snow Leopard
    6Gigs RAM
3TB storage between 4 drives, each drive with about 50% free space
I am editing a 10 minute HD video from avchd files.  The edited video is very heavy in photoshop files with a variety of different fx including green screen.  The system has slowed down to almost a standstill.  Anytime I move the playcurser, or try to do any action, it displays the spinning top "thinking" icon and takes 15 seconds to several minutes to unfreeze.  I am often forced to force quit and I have gotten unexpected quits several times.   The program also freezes on startup frequently.
No other programs are running.  When I export with media encoder, it took about 4 hours to complete.  The last 4 or so photoshop images I added seemed to tip the program over the edge.  It had been slowing down some, but those last few really dropped the processing speed.  Before those additions, export took 30 min to 1hr.
I did delete the render files (did not check if the file size was bloated beforehand, oops) but it has not significantly affected my performance.

Do you need all of those extra pixels in the stills? Are you panning the full 4976?
Two things to consider are that if you using, say a 1920 x 1080 Sequence Frame Size, you can only see that at any time, regardless of how large the images are in pixels. If there are extra pixels, i.e. the Pan is not using all 4976 pxls., I would Scale to just what you need in PS, prior to Import.
If you are doing any Scale in PrPro, its Scaling algorithms are not as efficient, as those in PS. [Note: CS5 and 5.5 are a major improvement on that statement.]
With many large stills (the max for CS4 is 4096 x 4096, if there ARE extra pixels, pushing those around will use up resources, and quickly. As a test, some years back, I was working on a "photo wall," and was using 4000 x 4000 images. The workstation had no issues with slowness, until I got to the 5th large still. By the 8th, the Project was too slow to edit. I had to wait for everything. Luckily, I have AE, and it handles large stills much more efficiently, and much differently, than PrPro. I just moved to an AE Comp, and completed the Project, finishing up n PrPro, after I Exported from AE.
Just something to think about. With Scaling in PrPro, this is one time, where bigger is not necessarily better.
    Good luck,

  • De-install Premiere CS4 for mac

How do I de-install Adobe Premiere CS4 for mac so I can re-install it? I think you have to do more than just throw it in the trash right?
    I'm on a mac OS X version 10.5.6
You don't have to reinstall the entire suite right?
    Thank you.
    Jill

I have not done it yet for if you want to reinstall Adobe CS4 Premiere for Mac you have to reinstall the entire suite. ALSO I purchased Quick Time Pro and it will NOT open MPEG files so that I can convert them to MOV files to get my timeline back up and running.eeeerrrrrr
thaks gueys for the previous messages...In short my MPEGs in  my timeline are all Pending (they were working fine for months. My .mov files in Adobe Premiere are fine still. I just don't want to lose all of my editing! I need help trying to get my MPEGS working again and don't want to have to re-edit.

  • Peak files and beach balls in MAC Premiere CS4

    Hello all,
I having an issue, or should I say issues with Premiere CS4 on a networked Mac, and mac drive. Everytime I go to open a project premiere generates new peak files, which makes opening a 2 minute proj take like 20 minutes. And also it places a bunch of peak files in the folder which takes up space.
Also, everytime I switch programs (like say go from Premiere to Safari, and back to Premiere) or the computer sits for a bit of time, I get the beach ball (of death) for like 5+ minutes before I can do anything with the project. This only happens on my computer, of which we have 4 networked and 1 is connected direct to the network drive which is a Lacie brand Quadra.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!! Hahaha.
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Greg,
As you know, the .PEK files are the Waveform Display. The .CFA files are the Conformed Audio. These are necessary for PrPro to edit, and to have the Waveform displayed.
My guess would be that PrPro is loosing these, because of the networked environment. I'd try with the Assets copied to the local HDD, and make sure that all Scratch Disks are located locally, as well. If this works, once PrPro has gone through the process of .PEK and .CFA writing, so long as these files are not moved, that should be it, and PrPro should be able to find these files and use them, without additional Conforming and PEK generation.
I've had similar occur on mapped network drives, and just doing the copy and redirecting PrPro to those copies (Relink Media) has cured it. I now only use network drives as storage for Assets, and not to provide same to PrPro for editing.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Camtasia Poor Quality in Premiere CS4 Export

I am a PC user. One of my clients uses Mac and Camtasia to screen capture his software program, which I need to integrate into a video I am making for his company. The MP4 Camptasia file he sends me looks good. I bring the file into Premiere to edit it, but when I export it, the clip done with Camtasia has very poor quality, while the footage I shot with my video camera looks great.
    Specs:
    Camera: HMC40, PH mode 1080/60i (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression).
    PC: i7 quad-core 64-bit running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, 8 GB RAM.
Editor: Premiere CS4 in the Adobe CS4 Master Collection .
New Sequence setup in Premiere: AVCHD > 1080i > AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic.
    Premiere’s export settings:
    Format: MPEG2
Preset: HDTV 1080p 29.97 High Quality
Multiplexer tab > Bitrate and Buffering Details: Variable
Video Tab > Basic Video Settings > Quality: 5
    Field Order > None (progressive)
    Profile > Main
Bitrate Settings: Bitrate Encoding: VBR 2Pass
      Minimum Bitrate: 4 (default)
      Target Bitrate: 15 (default)
      Maximum Bitrate: 18.5 (default)
    GOP Settings > M Frames: 3 (default)
      N Frames: 15 (default)
Output summary: NTSC, 1920X1080, 29.97 drop frame (fps), Progressive, Quality 5.0
Note in general: I found that if I set the Bitrate Encoding at VBR 1Pass, I got glitches sporadically.Using VBR 2Pass has solved this.
My question about the Camtasia clip:
    1) How can I get the Camtasia footage to be as sharp in the export as in the original?
    Other questions in general:
    2) Are my New Sequence setting in Premiere correct? AVCHD > 1080i > AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic
    3) Is my choice to export as MPEG2, HDTV 1080p 29.97 High Quality preset, the best for the footage I shoot?
    4) Is my choice to set the Multiplexer tab > Bitrate and Buffering Details at ‘Variable’ the best?
    5) Do my Bitrate and GOP settings need adjustment?
    6) Should my Export field order be Upper instead of Progressive?

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    The frame rate is 1038 X 882
That is a very odd frame size, and one that probably won't work well no matter what workflow you use.  You asked:
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
how could he better capture and export to match my workflow?
Have him capture and export to match your desired export frame size for the finished project.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
How would you suggest I change my workflow to handle the interlaced and progressive issue?
I can't answer that until I know exactly how you intend to deliver your finished video.  Any answers to your other questions will also likely depend on your intended delivery format and media.

  • FCP XML Import on Premiere CS4.0.1 Windows

Great work on implementing FCP XML import on CS4.0.1. <br /><br />We have all our media mounted on a network share. On the Mac exporting a sequence from FCP and then importing into Premiere on the Mac works no problems. On Windows this is a problem, Premiere prompts for each of the media items, which is pretty painful to re-link again. <br /><br />Looking at the FCP XML this appears to be down to the <pathurl> area of the XML. These are typically file://server/Volumes..... etc... which doesn't translate to any of the file mountings on Windows, which are D: E: F: etc... mounted drives. Is there any way to help us? We can write a script to manually modify the XML. Can you explain how Premiere Windows likes to read these Mac URLs?

Thank you all for your help. It still leaves a bit of a workflow problem. <br /><br />Basically we have some people ingesting / organizing content and maintaining on a network share. Duplicating the media is slow and moving it all into one volume is not too good either as it breaks all the relationships for others. Re-linking is good, but doesn't work if the material is spread across subdirectories and giving a key to link all the media together looses some of the benefit of having the export from FCP in the first place, it's just as easy to re-make the edit.<br /><br />We are only using cut edits, so this is quite simple. For users on the Mac using FCP and handing off to Premier it works fine, the problem is we want to hand off to Windows Premier. It's ok to run a script over the files to change the XML naming of the <pathurl> which seems to be causing the problem, but how to describe this in the Windows world?<br /><br />Thanks for all the help.... anyone from Adobe with any ideas?<br /><br />The problem as I see it is how to identify Mac OS mounts to a Windows version of Premier on XML import.

  • Export settings in premiere CS4

hi, i have a sony sr11 camcorder. i edit its footage in premiere cs4. i  dont seem to find a gud export setting which can result gud quality  video, except exporting in microsoft avi format and selecting dv ntsc  codec, ntsc widescreen 16:9 (1.2121) aspect. this result in gud quality  but the ratio is not fully 16:9 when played in any player. its a bit  more squared, not too much. the aspect ratio becomes even more square  when i compress the video by ashampoo movie shrink software. can any one  plz guide me wat to do ? video size is 720x480 !!

    Thank you.
Given that you have SD material (720 x 480), the highest quality would be DV-AVI, BUT, that will be too large for a DVD-Data, unless your Project is short and you use DVD-9's (DL).
I would choose MPEG-2 (the format/CODEC of DVD-Video) and keep the bit-rate up for quality. You will need to balance the bit-rate vs the file size and the Duration, but it is an effective CODEC. This should also play on most Mac's, with little issue.
One can cram more Duration into a DivX file, but the compression will be noticed in quality, and will require the users to download a CODEC and install it. You would not be able to include a deliverable, as it is a licensed product, though just the CODEC is free.
I hope that the wait was worthwhile.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - WMV (a really wide variety of choices within) would be fine too, but that would leave out many Mac-users, and I think that the compression will compromise the quality, but only by a tiny bit.
Also, wait for a few other comments, as different folk have their own favs.

(see FCP X)..
    good luck with apple dude..
Where is the Apple problem? I have CS4 and CS5 running perfectly fine on my Macbook Pro. Installed 5 after Lion upgrade. Worth every cent. Adobe did have some catching up to do with Lion but with the CS5.5 update all runs fine. But not yours. So it is a problem with the Lion OS? You say you have been with Adobe since 2005. So you would be aware of all the other issues that Adobe had catching up with past Oss in Mac and Windows then. They get it right, but it is up to them. It is not up to Apple, nor Microsoft for that matter, to run around and check that every software developer in the world is running their business properly.
And what has politics got to do with anything. Some people just have to blame Software for their poor Hardware maintainence of failure of the same.
<The only think I can really do is to go back on my old windows...give back this orrible lap top and ask for my money back!>
Great suggestion. You should go with that one, but good luck getting a refund.

  • Premiere Cs4 handle CPU...performance...and idiot questions

Ok, i tried to read as much as i could, performance threads about Premiere Cs4...but couldn't help it.
So i upgraded to Production Premium Cs4 before 2 weeks...
I've noticed all the problems that were mentioned...what i can't understand is the LOW PERFOMANCE in export or preview
my system runs a QUAD 6600 with 8gbs RAM, NVIDIA 8800GT and XP64...
after effects runs fine in almost maximum CPU (if you adjust it in preferences), but premiere (that means and ABOBE MEDIA encoder) exports in 5-20% of the CPU...if you try to encode with TMPGEnc processes go much faster and cpu is quite high...
question 1) (yes i know i am dumb...)
exporting speed has to do with footage, type of media that is being exporting and GPU??????
2)is my system, just not enough???
3)Premiere CS4 cannot handle multicore anyway...and every user here has the same problems??????
Sometimes...i think that i will do BAD things in my PC when PREMIERE is SO SLOW and i am in such hurry...Someone...coould answer? before i start taking drugs????????????????
A Straight answer 1) ,2) ,3) would be really nice for my emotional condition...

    Roger thank you very much!
It is now starting to make sense. I have only run it once and not tried any other tricks yet (like trying to use the Source from the RAID array rather than from the C: drive)
Now rather than taking 130 seconds for encoding it is down to 25 seconds versus 8 seconds for CS3. I suspect that at least some of that is because they are using the C: drive for the source.
MPEG encoding has also a major improvement by using the rendered preview files and as matter of fact it reduced the MPEG encoding time from 75 seconds (CS3) to 57 seconds (CS4)! Maybe we will have to go back to suggesting rendering the timeline before any encoding.
One other plus for CS4 is that the rendering is much smarter in that any duplicate segments are rendered only one time.
Why do they hide these menus with such tiny hard to find icons? I had a similar problem finding a playback option for my second monitor.

  • Best Video Card for non 3d/compositing work in Premiere CS4?

Hi all, I'm looking to optimize my system where I can to speed up the editing process. I edit 1080p footage from the Canon 5D MKII (h.264 MOV files)using half-res h.264 proxies, but CS4 seems to hang a lot in the timeline view and clips just disappear and instead show green. I'm switching to half-res MPEG-2 (.m2v) proxies now and so far that problem seems to have gone away (still testing), but when timeline display quality is at "High Quality" (vs. automatic) there's still some chop during slow pans (not seen with "Automatic" or "Draft Quality").
Anyway, I'm looking for the weakest point in my system and suspect the video card. My system is an 2.66 i7 processor, 6GB 1333 ram, 1x160GB sata II HD (OS/Apps), 3x1TB SATA II RAID 0 (paging file, data), and an $80 ATI 4650 512 MB video card running Vista 64.
So all that said, what's the best general graphics card for editing HD video in Premiere CS4? I don't care about 3d or compositing at this stage, just basic editing of unrendered (timeline playback) HD video, maybe sometimes 1-3 HD layers, some basic color correction effects (b+w, contrast, etc), dissolves, text overlay, some clip speed manipulation.
Many seem to recommend the Nvidia quadro cards, but I haven't found any information to suggest they help with anything other than 3D/compositing, which I don't need (and therefore don't need to pay the premium).
There's also the Nvidia CX card, but it's main feature is touted as encoding h.264, whereas I could care less about that and ideally need decoding of h.264 in the timeline to be better. I haven't seen any great reviews on this card of heard of average user testimonials, probably because it's $2k and it mainly marketed as "zoom more fluidly in photoshop, export h.264 4x faster", which seem like minor issues vs. "better realtime playback of HD video".
I sort of rambled, but if any informed CS4 users can help answer the question regarding the best video card for general CS4 editing use (not 3d/compositing stuff) I'd love to get more insight.

So in Media Encoder CS4, I tried encoding one of the clips that plays back the least smooth in the Premiere timeline (a slow pan across intricate patterns on a sand dune in death valley) to the following:
Format: P2 Movie, Preset: DVCPRO HD 720P 30
(this was the only format in media encoder that mentions DVCPRO HD)
I noticed when trying to customize the setting, that there is no 30 fps option, just 23.976, 29.97, and 59.94. I just went with 29.97 as that was the closest to the 30 fps of the source MK II footage. The width and height were also unajustable at 960x720 for the DVCPRO HD format.
Playing the output in the timeline view of Premiere was comparable in smoothness to the m2v file. I looked at my resource monitor during playback looking for bottlenecks, and the CPU does seem to spike at 100% initially when playing this clip back. I reverted to the m2v version and also saw the same CPU spike. I also reverted back to the down-res'd mp4 version, same spike. Moving display quality down to draft does allow for smooth playback here.
So I guess there's something about this clip that is CPU intensive to play back in the timeline in any of these formats. The original 1080p version plays back perfectly in both quicktime and VLC player.
Anyway, for now I think I'm content with using the m2v proxies as a big chunk of the clips are fairly smooth, and using a reduced quality display mode for clips that don't play as smoothly is accpeptable for now. At least so far I'm not seeing the hanging/video not displaying (and instead showing a green screen) that I was with the mp4 proxies.
If anyone has any other suggestions as to how to get smoother timeline playback for these proxies (or the original h.264 .MOV files), however, whether it be a hardware upgrade (e.g. better video card) or a different proxy codec, I'd love to hear them and give it a shot.
