Premiere CS4 looses its memory

My Premiere CS4 (4.1.0.) sometimes looses its "memory" of the last opened project - meaning that at the opening screen, when usualy the last project is offered to be opened again, there are no projects anymore. So I have to go over the button "open project". That wouldn't be a big deal but there are other things which are lost too, as example the keyboard settings and sometimes some already used files were be analyzed newly (e.g. mp3 files).
Has anyone any idea what could be the cause of this behaviour? Strangely the phenomenon does not always occur but I have not find out yet, when it occurs and when not. Any idea?
Thanks for your help!
PS: working with vista64bit, SP2, working on a WD-Velociraptor-system-HD and my projects on a RAID-10 with 4 HD, 8GB DDR-2 RAM, CPU Quad9550

Thanks everybody for your help and your suggestions.
@Jeff - no, I'm always logged in with the same account - and I'm also the only user on the machine - so I don't think this is the reason.
@AndreyV - possible, but as far as I know, I don't have any cleaning tools working in the background
@ the_wine_snob - I don't think, that it's a problem of Windows, because all other applications run properly - the last opened word and excel documents are always remembered normaly, so I think...
@SFL46' suggestion could be the cause of my problem  - in fact I do have the folder "my documents" (and in it the PP.prproj-files) at a diffrent location than Windows Vista usually puts it. I moved it to my RAID-drives (instead of the system drive c where usually the "user"-folders are located). I never had any problems with PP CS3 or the earlier versions, but that could be the reason of this behaviour (specially because PP doesn't always looses the last opened documents). I will move the prproj-files to the user-folder on the system drive and will report my experience here.
Thanks!
Phil

  • Vista 64/Premiere CS4/32GB Ram Virtual Memory Recommendation

    Vista 64
    Premiere CS4
    32 GB Ram
Here are my current Virtual Memory Settings...
    On C:
It is set to "System Managed Size" which has created a ~34GB pagefile.sys file on C:\
    On V: (RAID)
    It is set to Custom Size, Initial= 16396, Maximum= 32768 which has created a ~16GB pagefile.sys file on V:
Are these settings adequate or overkill?? Any suggestions would be helpful. I still have some occasional blue screens that are unexplained.

Despite some comments you heard previously in this thread, there are a few things about pagefiles to keep in mind.
    1. Create a pagefile with a fixed size, min and max being the same. That avoids resizing and thus defragmentation of the file.
    2. Keep the pagefile on a separate disk from where most activity takes place, not on the OS disk, not on the media disk, but on a third disk, that can contain other software or data, like audio, downloads or the like as long as you don't access them very frequently.
    3. Create the pagefile on the disk when it is still empty, so it is the first file on the disk.
    4. It used to be a good rule of thumbs to make the size of the pagefile around 1.5 times the amount of physical RAM.
In your case with 32 GB of RAM you may never need the pagefile (it depends on the software you use, for 3D you may need it) and it depends on the storage that you have available (storage is cheap), but if you create a fixed pagefile of 16 GB you should never run into trouble, nor will you lose much diskspace.

  • Problem opening a Premiere cs3 project in Premiere cs4

i recently did a clean install on a new machine with adobe premiere cs4
i attempted to open the project in adobe cs4 that i created in adobe cs 3
( i confirmed that the project isnt corrupted as the same project plays fine on another machine that has cs3 running)
Here is what happens When i open the project in cs4 it goes through the stages below and keeps looping and indexing.
*first pass: i first see adobe indexing the project and there is a  media pending display in the program display and on the time line the thumbnails have not been created where the edits are.
    * second pass: adobe finishes the indexing and then i see adobe looping again to conforming the video again, there is still a media pending display in the program display  but this time the thumbnails have appeared on the timeline and i see the subclips in the project bin.
    * Adobe stops indexing but there is still the media pending display on the program display so then i grab the timeline slider to scroll throught the project and then the indexing process starts all over again in this endless loop.
The project is located on a local drive and i turned off indexing on the drive.
I also tried deleting the rendered and preview files from the cs3 copied project , hoping that
CS4 would recreate everything. and still no luck
Any specific steps that i can do to trouble shoot this problem

When one Opens a CS3 Project in CS4, there is a lot of work that needs to be done. I'd Open the Project, and go get some coffee (decaf, so you will not loose your patience). Just let it do its thing with no input to the computer at all. Come back in 5 - 10 mins. and see if all have been completed. Be patient.
If you are actually getting a loop in the Conforming, Indexing and the rest - remember be patient - then close down and reboot. Try Importing the CS3 Project into a New Project in CS4 to see if things improve.
BTW did I mention being patient?
    Good luck,

  • (Windows) Premiere cs4 with Canon 5D Mark II

I'm seriously considering buying Adobe's Production Premium, but I am extremely concerned about Premiere's support for the files outputted by my Canon 5D Mark II, h264 .mov 1920x1080p 30fps.
I've done a lot of research and it seems as if a lot of folks with a lot more experience, better hardware components and 3rd party software packages haven't been able to find a workflow that is reasonable in terms of effort and time required just to get a project going.
Can anyone give me a reason why I shouldn't seriously consider moving to an Apple solution with FCP Studio over production premium cs4 with premiere and after effects?
    Thanks for your honest opinions!

If you want to stay on PC, would be the main reason.
I dont know how well FCP handles it; but typically fcp converts everything to an intermediate format (pro res)
I am definitely cringing at the thought of ditching all of my PC components (well, I suppose I can re-use the hard-drives at least in the Mac Pro if that's what I get). I do like a lot about windows, and being able to upgrade my stuff to my own liking rather than being stuck in a closed ecosystem. I also game a lot so that's a consideration too.
The way FCP converts the video to Pro Res sounds pretty smart and definitely take the guesswork out.

Best one I can think of is that it would be an Apple solution.
The better solution would be to get a real video camera for video production.  While the world of DSMC is rapidly approaching, we're not quite there yet.
    Thanks for your reply, Jim!
I agree making the switch to Apple and Final Cut Studio might not be the best solution.
I cannot really speak to getting a "real" video camera just because Premiere cs4 can't seem to play nicely with the camera I currently have.
I am able to drag and drop 5D Mark II .mov files straight into imovie 6 HD, have it import (40 gb of movies in 4-5 hrs) and then edit away with no delays on a Macbook (non-pro) with no problems whatsoever. Playback, cutting, transitions, effects are silky smooth. Imovie 6 HD came with my Macbook when I bought it in December 2006. Premiere Pro came out last year didn't it? What gives?
There are people making some "real" good stuff out there with this camera and I love its ability to use all of my Canon lenses (four), high capacity memory cards (ranging from 8gb to 32gb) and camera batteries that I already have. Buying a new, but "real", camera would mean learning a whole new camera system not to mention having to buy all of the accessories, lenses, batteries, memory cards (a Panasonic P2 16gb alone is $800 USD) and carrying all that extra stuff around. If I'm on vacation for instance every morning I would have to make the decision of carting around either the still camera or the video camera instead of just bringing something that could do it both, and potentially miss either a once in a lifetime still or video.
I'm a photographer by trade but I'm getting into video production because I feel like I will need video editing/production skills in the future or I'll be left in the dust. That isn't the only reason of course - I've always wanted to shoot video but couldn't afford or justify a quality camera until now.
Jim why do you prefer Premiere to Final Cut Pro on the Mac?
    Thanks again for replying.
    Matt.

  • Slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro

I am having a similar slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro, but I don't have bloated prproj file size.
Here is what I am working with:
Mac Pro intel quad core 2.8ghz
    OSX 10.6.7 Snow Leopard
    6Gigs RAM
3TB storage between 4 drives, each drive with about 50% free space
I am editing a 10 minute HD video from avchd files.  The edited video is very heavy in photoshop files with a variety of different fx including green screen.  The system has slowed down to almost a standstill.  Anytime I move the playcurser, or try to do any action, it displays the spinning top "thinking" icon and takes 15 seconds to several minutes to unfreeze.  I am often forced to force quit and I have gotten unexpected quits several times.   The program also freezes on startup frequently.
No other programs are running.  When I export with media encoder, it took about 4 hours to complete.  The last 4 or so photoshop images I added seemed to tip the program over the edge.  It had been slowing down some, but those last few really dropped the processing speed.  Before those additions, export took 30 min to 1hr.
I did delete the render files (did not check if the file size was bloated beforehand, oops) but it has not significantly affected my performance.

Do you need all of those extra pixels in the stills? Are you panning the full 4976?
Two things to consider are that if you using, say a 1920 x 1080 Sequence Frame Size, you can only see that at any time, regardless of how large the images are in pixels. If there are extra pixels, i.e. the Pan is not using all 4976 pxls., I would Scale to just what you need in PS, prior to Import.
If you are doing any Scale in PrPro, its Scaling algorithms are not as efficient, as those in PS. [Note: CS5 and 5.5 are a major improvement on that statement.]
With many large stills (the max for CS4 is 4096 x 4096, if there ARE extra pixels, pushing those around will use up resources, and quickly. As a test, some years back, I was working on a "photo wall," and was using 4000 x 4000 images. The workstation had no issues with slowness, until I got to the 5th large still. By the 8th, the Project was too slow to edit. I had to wait for everything. Luckily, I have AE, and it handles large stills much more efficiently, and much differently, than PrPro. I just moved to an AE Comp, and completed the Project, finishing up n PrPro, after I Exported from AE.
Just something to think about. With Scaling in PrPro, this is one time, where bigger is not necessarily better.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere CS4 Media Encoder AVIs and Encore Encoding Errors

For some reason, I'm having trouble creating DVD's in Encore from AVI's exported from Premiere CS4. When encoding starts, Encore immediately pops up with an "encoding error". I now, all of a sudden get this identical error on two of our systems.
Most of the time Encore works if I export an "MP2" file from the Premiere CS4 timeline.
Any of you guys having trouble with Encore CS4? To me it has been a lot more buggy and unreliable than any previous version. The program also seems sluggish on our Q6600 4gGB RAM computers! Kind of like the program is straining just to open its windows.
Another thing that is annoying. Earlier in the day, I exported a Flash Web video for a client's review. A few hours later I had to make a 1 hour and 46 minute DVD with chapters for a client that had to be Fed Ex'd overnight. It took forever to complete and I soon realized that Encore defaulted back to the last export...FLASH! cr@p. I would prefer that the program defaulted to standard DVD creation. After all it is Encore DVD.

I'm having major problems with Media Encoder CS4.
When I try to create an AVI file (for example) from a section of my Premiere Pro CS4 timeline, the encoder opens, takes forever to load the project, and then, after I hit start queue button, it again takes forever to load the project in the small window at the bottom of the display.
Finally the "waiting" message in the queue list turns to an orange exclamation mark with the message that encoder "could not read from the source. PLease check if it has been moved or deleted." Which of course it has not been.  THis happens even if I preview the section in advance in Premiere.  material.
If at any point I hit the settings button it simply reloads the project

  • What's hardware should upgrade for Using Premiere CS4 to editing (AVCHD)m2ts file?

What's hardware or software should upgrade for Using Premiere CS4 to editing (AVCHD)m2ts file?
1st question: when i try to do editing by using Premiere CS4 AVCHD sequence timeline, the edting monitor seems not smooth (like wearing goggles) & delay, and when i use AME to encode m2ts file (which not yet edit) to AVI file (about 1 hour), it take 2h 13min to finish, is it normal?
2nd question: i use mpeg2 HD 1440 file to do eding, the edting monitor also not very smooth but better than using m2ts file, after editing done, i try to encode these mpeg2 HD 1440 file (which edited about long 1 hr) to a New file mpeg2 1440 X 1080i HQ or even mpeg2 Pal DV HQ file, the encoding was not runthe encoding after wait for half an hour. How many hours it take usually????
3rd question: i use m2ts file video file to export as a Bitmap, 1 frame 1 picture bitmap, it take long time too, about 1 or 2min to finish encoding, if i export more than 1 picture, it take even more time, i have experienced it, 3 or 4 pictures need about 10 or 15 min to finish encoding. i used to using mpeg2 HD 1440 file (which edited file) to export frame as picture, it not run the encoding at all. WHY ????
i'm new in Premiere CS4,so i got many question about Premiere CS4, usually i use Premiere Pro 1.5 version
my computer is: Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU
                             E7400 @ 2.80 GHz
                             2.80 GHz, 2.00 GB RAM
Graphic Card: ATI Radeon X1650 series
2 Hard Disks in my computer (C Drive is 300 GB (not sata) , D Drive is 500 GB sata)
    4th Question: Premiere CS5 & Premiere CS4 which one is better ???
5th Question: What's different ATI Radeon and NVIDIA Card, which is better, which u suggest to. What is different Graphic Card and Video Card ?? Should i install HD Video Card ????

I don't think a core-2 will work very well with AVCHD... you need at least an Intel i7 920... or whatever is current
My CS5/AVCHD 1st Impressions http://forums.adobe.com/thread/652694?tstart=0 includes a link to the computer I built... since the GTX 285 is no longer sold, I would now go with a GTX 460 or whatever is the current "best bang for the buck" - AND I would buy 4Gig-by-3Sticks memory to be able to expand from 12Gig to 24Gig if needed
For my home hobbyist, family movies (which means that I am not trying to recreate Star Wars with video effects or many layers) AVCHD editing is "as smooth as spreading warm butter on hot toast" (also the MP4 video from wife's Flip camera)
My 3 hard drives are configured as...
    1 - 320G WD Win7 and all programs
2 - 320G WD Win7 swap file and PPro projects
3 - 1T WD all video files... read and write

  • Premiere CS4 vs Full HD YouTube (BEST quality) settings?

    Windows Vista Premium (32-bit)
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (Version 4.2)
Hello. I have a problem. I've been using this settings to save my work for youtube:
    http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/6816/settingsr.png
Now, here is a quality that I get with it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2teDL4MPS_8
I've been playing around with the settings and somehow today I saved this file:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMBixEnweWQ
I have no idea what I've changed, but the quality difference is significant!!!
I know the text is a little tiny bit smaller in the better quality one and it was move a couple of pixels, but that's not the point. I am 100% sure it has to do something with the settings.
Here are properties for both files:
    http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/9373/propertiesz.png
It is kind off strange because a "Good Quality.mp4" files has a better quality over "Bad Quality.mp4" yet it has a smaller Size as well as Data rate and Total bitrate (highlighted in red)
I've even tried doing this hoping it would increase the quality. Maybe it did, but not significantly. Not nearly as good as the "Good Quality.mp4"
    http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/4366/settings2.png
Here is a GSpot screen shot as well:
    http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7506/gspot.png
What could be an issue? Can you guys help me work my settings in Adobe Premiere CS4? It is one of those situations where I don't care about files size... I want to quality and I wanted it the finest.
Thanks... All help is greatly appreciated...

    Hi,
    I'm back...made dinner and took a break...
I hope you bear with me on this as I really would like to see you get good results...and there's no reason why a title couldnt be loaded up to youtube with good results..
First off, a rule of thumb about video editing is this...
    1) project settings match the source footage.
That's something it took me a while to learn but I finally did ( from people helping me here in fact ).
Another sorta general rule is that what you export would be about the same as your project settings ( same frame rate, same type of video (interleaved or progressive), same aspect ratio ( 4:3 or 16:9 ) and so on.  The biggest difference in exporting is the type of delivery format ( mpeg 2 for DVD or mpeg 4 for web and that sort of thing...which means the codec you choose for export will be related to the final product usage.
Also, and this happens a lot....you can downsize the video to a smaller size...like go from HD to SD for a DVD instead of Blue Ray.  Orrrrr, downsize video to play on a hand held device ( ipod ) etc.
Sooo, basically what you first do generally is create a project that matches your source footage.  In the case of DV NTSC it would look something like this:
720x480, 29.97 fps ( which is how 30fps interleaved works because of a timing mark in the frame - when to start the next field scan --so its not exactly 30fps ) --- aspect ratio 4:3, interleaved, bottom field first , and so on.
As you can see from the general "specs" most of the important and outstanding things about the video in that format of describing it, most people will talk about their video source specs the same sorta way.
    Like, 1920x1080 24p ( means HD progressive 24 FPS - the "P" after 24 means progressive )
The best results for export usually follow the source and project specs very closely.  You CAN make an interleaved video progressive, but you have to half the size ( frame dimensions ) to do that and make it look good, because when you go to progressive you lose one field....lose half the resolution..
So lets say I start a project that is DV NTSC like you did...and made a title...
That is going to be 720x480 29.97 fps interleaved ( or progressive ) 4:3 aspect ratio OR 16:9.  If interleaved it will be bottom field first, if progressive it will be NO FIELDS.  The pixel aspect ratio is weird and depends on whether it is 4:3 or 16:9 and if I remember right neither one is square pixel.  Sooo, this gives you the general idea what the project settings can be.
You could tell us exactly what your project settings are ( since theres no source video no need to worry about that for now ...can deal with that when you do get some video ....for now we can just get it exported well for the title )
Your project settings will tell us what would be BEST for exporting for YouTube...but I would bet that if you match DV NTSC with the YouTube preset to export DV NTSC as Ann mentioned earlier you would get GREAT results !
The problem so far has been trying to UPSCALE to HD from SD.  That's why it has been geting blurry.
Now, just so you know....you can make a brand new project that is in fact HD ...and do a title and then export THAT to youtube also...as HD, without losing any quality also....but you need to set the project settings for HD first.
I hope this helps a little and sorry my head was spinning around earlier ...please don't hesitate to ask more questions...OK ?
ps... because you are only dealing with a title ( which is a bit different than actual video ) you may in fact get decent results upscaling to HD from SD...but you really shouldn't get used to doing that ...as you can just as easily create the HD project, make the title and use the YouTube preset Ann gave you...and it will be beautiful !

  • Can not install update for premiere CS4

    Hi, my name is Josanne.
I work with windows Vista home premium and Premiere CS4 , Aspire G7200 computer, AMD Phenom 9850 Quadcore processor, 8 gig mem.
    I have two problems:
    1.
I got a message to update Premiere CS4 so i tried.
    The file is 192.4MB
Every time i trie to install it failes saying: Adobe setup stopped working.Updater did not work.
I tried installing with firewall and antivirus shut down, didnt work.
    Does anyone have a solution?
    2.
I make clips using a Sony PD170 camera. When i make a widescreen (16:9) project the exported formats turn out strange.
It seems its always 4:3 format with black filling up the top and bottom.
I hope someone understands what i mean and knows a solution.
    Greetings,
    Josanne.

    1. Try to download manually from the Adobe site.
    2. The PD-170 is 4 x 3. You should only use a DV 4 x 3 preset. It will always show the black borders top and bottom, because the PD-170 is not capable of shooting 16 x 9, it only shoots 4 x 3 and crops the top and bottom.

  • Where to find Premiere CS4 Crash log?

    Hi,
I've been running Premiere CS4 on Windows XP x64 for the past several months without any problems.  A couple of days ago, I suddenly started getting a crash window whenever I would start up Premiere (during the splash screen loading).  I accidentally clicked on the "do not display again" option in the window, so the window has since disappeared and no longer shows up.
I have tried uninstalling CS4 completely, and reinstalling the entire suite, but I still have the same problem.  Furthermore, the crash report screen still doesn't display anymore.
I am starting to get quite frustrated at this point.  I am not sure where to look for a crash log and/or how to figure out / pinpoint what might be causing the error.
I am running XP x64 SP2 with all the latest patches enabled.
Other CS4 apps (ie: photoshop, encore, etc), work fine.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction?  I've tried searching the web to see if there is a way to reenable this crash report window and/or to find any pertinent log files, but can't seem to find anything.
I've already read through http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405950.html and tried out most of the suggestions to no avail.
Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I have wasted hours trying to figure this out on my own but am just spinning my wheels at this point.
    Thanks!
    Eric

That is the reason we advise never installing codec packs, since it is often utter h*ll to get rid of them again, leaving the only option for the non-expert registry wizards to reinstall OS & programs. Usually a faster and better way to repair things. I don't think it is fair to blame that on Adobe, especially since you aggravated things by using an unsupported OS to start with.
Fair enough, however, everything I have read about XP64 and CS4 is that it isn't officially supported, however, should work fine.  And true to form, it does/did work fine.  Until I messed things up.
I guess it is the lack of debugging tools and the length of time that it takes to install/uninstall CS4 that is making this process so utterly painful.  If there would be better tools and/or documentation for fixing a hole that you have dug yourself into, it would make things so much better.
I love Adobe products, but they have a history of poking around in obscure places in the OS that is intentionally undocumented, for example activation information, serial information, etc.  They have only recently (in the last couple of years) started providing tools (ie: CS4clean script) to help clean up faulty/defective installs.  However, even those don't seem to work perfectly.  I already uninstalled CS4 and ran the clean script.  Yet after reinstalling, my crash window no longer gets displayed in my original profile.  Which indicates to me that there are still some setting lurking around somewhere in the system that Adobe hasn't documented.
Now I completely understand Adobe's need to do this in order to protect its IP and software and business model.  Where they fall short, however, is providing tools to help the user determine what is wrong, faulty, defective in their system in order to be able to successfully (re)install the application.
My case is a prime example.  If there was a way to enable a "safe mode" of sorts, or a logger that indicates exactly which files were being loaded/accessed, it would go a long way to help determine what gremlin is still lurking in the PC.  Without such tools, it becomes incredibly arduous guessing constantly.  Add to the fact that every "guess" that includes and installation takes 1-2 hours to complete, and the frustration levels start to increase.
That being said, I have yet-again just launched the uninstallation of CS4.  Will run the clean script again afterwards, reboot, and reinstall and keep my fingers crossed.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Premiere CS4 crashing when timeline opened

Everytime I open a timeline in Premiere CS4 it crashes on me.. does this happen to any
    one else?

    Hi,
This link shows about 5 incidents of your problem in a forum...short little posts about the same problem...
As you can see ( only takes a sec to read them )  there are a number of different " solutions" to each posters problem...
    http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/adobe-creative-suite/470416-premiere-cs-4-crashes.html
That includes ( as you can see ) a bad memory chip, not having the latest video card driver, dynamically linked assets, re-install of Operating system, etc..
It gives you a good idea how it is very helpful to supply as much info as possible...
    Good luck

  • Premiere cs4 Not Responding after a few mins use

    Hello,
I have been using premiere cs4 to make stop motion videos for awhile on this computer and have started having problems with the software.
Everytime I try to use it after a few mins sometimes 5 sometime less it goes white and says not responding resulting in having to close the program. Im starting to get late on deadlines and this is becoming a problem. Ive resorted to doing one step saving then having to close the program and repeat the process.
    My system...
    i5 750 OCed to 3.5ghz
    8gb 1600mhz ram
I know its not the best but untill now its done this work for me fine. I am using stills at a res of 1920x1080 at 150 dpi and there are thousands of stills but again This is a new problem and I have been doing this for awhile with no issues.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
I did attempt a small batch sized as you stated but it did not help. It doesnt seem to matter what I'm working on within the program I could have no content and just click different menus and within mins the system will stop responding.  That being said the final video must be in 1080p.
Here are the the items requested in the FAQ given.
i5 750 OCed to 3.5ghz also tried stock clock settings.
    8gbs 1600mhz ram
2 hhd set up as follows
500gb 7400rpm hdd, program Pagefile, Media cache
1tb 7400rpm hdd, media, project file, previews
    4gb virtual page file
    win 7 fully updated
    premiere pro fully updated
    No Audio used
Ive tried various file sizes and settings to match those files all with same result.
As I state above the actual conent size, type and quantity doesnt seem to matter 3-5 mins in and it just stops responding.
    Things ive tried so far.
I did extensive mem tests on my ram with no issues
reverted my over clock to stock settings
    reinstall the software several times.
Also of note my ram never goes over 50% usage so Im not using all my ram.
I hope this helps i tried to include everything mentioned on the listed FAQ

  • Premiere CS4 Quick render

    Windows 7 Ultimate
    Premiere CS4
    Ram 6MB
    Working with 1920x1080 footage
    Gentlemen !
I am working on a 5 mnis song , each time I send it to AME to render or export to AME it takes atleast 5 to 6 hours to render, Obviuosly I try to stay native with my output file, but sometimes I choose DV NTSC for the output file.
My question is, is there any way to choose a different format for output file, that would take less time to render ? I mean just to check my colors and effects and etc.
What i mean by that is ,my system is not that powerful to handle HD footage very well, so I have to render my footage so I can check all effects and etc.

About if I change the output file's size to a smaller size ?
the prob with that is that you're still dealing with your original asset(s) ( video) and now compressing it and downscaling it etc, and the program has to work pretty hard to do all those calculations and make the product...( like h264 or wmv or whatever )
so its still the same problem re: strain on your computer stuff and time involved....plus you wont know for sure if that "translation" is gonna be as good product re: transistions etc...
lets say you have effects that need the program to "tween" frames..create frames in between your original frames...well....in the math etc and compression algorithyms ( sp? ) that makes that happen from one codec to another is different...and maybe your "color" and overall quality wont give you an " honest" translation compared to if you just export for your final product ( the high res ). Plus, to do the downscaling and so on is actually MORE of a strain on resources maybe...its not a given that by making it smaller it is gonna take less time to export...might take LONGER
know what I mean?  it might be close and good enough for what you want to do with your particular output...but I wouldnt trust it myself if I had to give it to someone and stand by it ...
so youre stuck with long exports is what it sounds like, and thank goodness you can even get THAT done !

  • Premiere CS4 doesn't work properly with Windows 7 trial - Please help!

    Hello!
I have installed the trial version of Windows 7 on my laptop and now my Premiere CS4 doesn't play the timeline in real time anymore. It worked fine with Windows Vista. I have also installed the newest Premiere update, but it didn't help. Is there a patch for Windows 7 (64bit) or will I have to wait until the full version comes out and try it again then?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Rafiki

It's a laptop and probably an older one, that means it is probably underpowered.
It's a laptop and that probably means it is a single 5400 rpm disk which is inadequate.
    Bill,
Probably good observations. I tend to loose sight of the fact that most laptops are not like mine and forget the common limitations. One mentions "laptop," and I see my Sager - duh! on me.
To the OP, this ARTICLE might also offer some tips on getting your computer ready for an NLE session. Common references are to how things are done in XP-Pro (my OS), but you should be able to "read between the lines," and adapt the general concepts to Win7 and your setup.
Also, giving full specs. on your laptop might help greatly, otherwise we're all just guessing. Bill brings up a couple of critical points. Your details will either point to them, or dismiss them.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
